Broncos find a way, beat the Patriots 20-17

Is this the week?  Are the Broncos for real now?  Matt Prater sure thinks so, and so do the 3700 members of MileHighReport.

Prater's 41-yard field goal in Overtime gave the Broncos a come-from-behind 20-17 win over the New England Patriots.  The Broncos are now 5-0 for the first time since 1998 when they won the Super Bowl.

We'll have a lot more about this game tonight.  For now, talk about it Broncos fan, your 5-0!

What a game what a loss!

Hey guys, good game. Close all the way, just the way we all thought. Funny thing is that It looked like the Patriots dinking and dunking down the field that last drive. You guys have a tough schedule ahead, good luck.

Keep the faith!

On an even more side note

I actually felt kind of bad for Bellicheck at the end of the game. It seemed like he really wanted to shake McD’s hand, and that kind of respect was great to see.

Great game, kept my heart pumping the whole way. Good luck to you guys the rest of the season, here is to hoping for the rematch in the playoffs!

Belichick and McDaniels had an agreement before the game

The cameras caught the pre-game hug, and both coaches agreed that they would only wave at the end of the game, but not do the handshake.

After the game, Belichick was looking for LaMont Jordan other former players to say a few words to and congratulate. McDaniels caught up with Belichick, Brady and the rest of the team at the buses after his post-game press conference. It’s all good.

Keep the faith!

Tremendous game

Patriots fans are extremely classy group. At least the blogosphere crowd.

But awesome game.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

we have a big game coming

SD on monday night, and then the bye week. It would be nice to go into the bye week unbeaten, and SD is weak in enough areas that we could do that.

5-0 Baby!!

From a very grainy streaming video here in Northern Ireland – what a great game! And what a great team performance yet again. Thought we’d blown it with those 4th Down special team penalties, but every facet of the team came through, and the coaching was good when it had to be. Orton, BMarsh, Eddie and Moreno shone on the ‘O’, whilst – and let’s be honest – this D is finding a new hero every week – this week it was Jack Williams who showed a nose for the ball. But honourable mention goes to BDawk and Vonnie Holliday too – and of course Matt Prater for taking the chance when it finally arrived. Great win – it’s put a smile on my face – just in time to head for bed – it’s 12.50am here now. Night all! Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kyle Orton looked really good today, so did Knowshon against a pretty good D. Denver’s D made the right adjustments at halftime. That was a fun, exciting game to watch!

Faith in Bowlen and faith that Dawkins has been around long enough to go where he though he had a chance of winning. And if he interviewed with McD and McD won him over then obviously there is something there.

Interesting tidbit

From Tim Graham over at ESPN -

“Broncos head coach and former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels exhibited rookie enthusiasm after the game, apparently snubbing old boss Bill Belichick to run toward and end zone and pump his first for the fans. Belichick searched for McDaniels to congratulate him, but wandered off the field with a perplexed look on his face. "

That is awesome. I flippin’ love our coach. And to think I wanted Steve Spags over him.

Anyone watching this as the CBS game on the east-coast (at least here in Wash DC) would have seen McD and BB shake hands, and only AFTER that did McD run over to the sideline and pump his fist 3(?) times with the crowd.

NFL rules question ?.....Or just bad manners ?

Is there some kind of rules at the end of the game that a coach cannot take some extra time to congrats to the opposing coach or do they have to leave the field right away . Or is bill B the true creep that i think he is ?

by broncosfaninphilly on Oct 11, 2009 6:49 PM MDT reply actions

No, no... Belichick and McDaniels had an agreement beforehand that they would forgo the post-game handshake

According to Mike Reiss (ESPNBoston):

McDaniels said, “We agreed before the game that we would wave. We shook hands before the game and we knew that there has been so much made of him and handshakes that we agreed to just go ahead and do that, but I talked to him before the game.”

McDaniels caught up with Belichick, Brady and crew at the team buses after his press conference. The national media – who get paid for what they do – don’t do their homework before they speak. It’s too bad.

Keep the faith!

I just got

This.

Although I’m going to get it and see a bajillion former Charger fans wearing it soon. Damn you California and your wishy washy bandwagoners!

anyone know where I can get an orange dawkins jersey…preferably on the cheap

by T.Dot_Bronco on Oct 11, 2009 6:59 PM MDT reply actions

What’s cheap? You can get one for about 80 bucks on NFL.com or denverbroncos.com.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

Eating a hat

I was wrong. I admit it. I was one of these wait and see people going into this season. I thought that 8-8 was the best Denver could do. Even after the 3-0 start I still had my doubts.

I don’t know if Denver will go to the Superbowl but it is now a legit contender. I’m no longer on the fence. I’m a fan again.

You're either a fan or you're not

If you want a sure thing pick the 85 Bears. I hear they may go all the way.

Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

the only thing that sucks about winning

is all the bandwagoners jumping back on……..LOL

I have been a Bronco fan since I was 5 years old, good, bad, ugly, win, lose, always a Bronco fan, never have I even thought about being a fan of another team, and I usually find it hard to even route for another team unless it directly benefits the Broncos somehow. I love football and all, but without the Broncos playing I don’t know that I could watch it…….LOL

Sceptic won over here...

Though I wasn’t sceptical of McDaniels, I was sceptical of Orton. I thought he could not be anything more than a game manager. Even last week versus the ’Boys, I found more than nits to pick with his passing. However, today, he proved he can take the game on his shoulders and win. I was thoroughly impressed.

I still refuse to get giddy about season prospects. I thought the team might finish anywhere from 4-12 to 6-10. I now see them finishing no worse than 8-8. But whether they are a playoff team will look a lot clearer after next Monday night in San Diego. This is still a brutal stretch and I think they gotta split with the bolts to be in the playoff picture as either a division champ or even a wild card.

Great, great, great win today! I am thoroughly enjoying reverse psychology success (I still curse my 13-3 hopes of 2002…long live Eddie Mac!).

by shanahanigans on Oct 11, 2009 7:07 PM MDT reply actions

I get the cautious optimism

But 8-8 is extremely unlikely.

5-0 now.

2 games vs the Chiefs
1 game vs the Raiders
1 game vs the Redskins

9-7 isn’t a lock but its pretty realistic. I personally see 11-5 or 12-4 with games against the red hot Colts and Giants.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh could give us some problems. We can easily split games with SD. But I feel good about the rest of our scheduled. Really good. I think we match up well with Baltimore.

But with a solid defense you have a chance to win every single game – with critical turnovers and 3 & outs you swing momentum in a big way. That is why defense wins championships.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

by ChristianL on Oct 11, 2009 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions

..."no worse than 8-8."

9-7 is looking very realistic, I agree. And I feel pretty good about the team picking up an additional win or two somewhere outside of the reasonably expected wins against Oakland (1), KC (2) and Washington (1). (ASIDE: I picked us to lose @ KC before the season, @ KC in December and all.) The question is where? I’ll say we do split home-and-home with San Diego; puts us at 10-6. Pittsburgh is looking vulnerable, and that may be more than merely perception. So, 11-5.

But as someone else pointed out, the NFL swings on momentum – within the game and over the course of the season. Denver has created its own momentum, and will probably continue to do so.

I sure hope so….but since I’ve been burnt every year since 1996 by picking high, but pleased when I’ve picked low, I’ll stick with low balling and being pleasantly surprised. (Easier said than done, I admit.)

Welcome aboard

the KO bandwagon. The 98 yard drive was clutch. Orton’s nickname should be “money”.

by rocko1 on Oct 11, 2009 7:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know about...

“Money,” but KO is sure looking like he’s capable of throwing accurate punches. That drive was certainly a near knockout.

HoosierTeacher had the best, most on-target off-season analysis of Orton’s fit with the Broncos scheme under McDaniels. HT’s been dead-on so far, even while he was trying to temper his analysis.

Why isn’t HT writing for a salary? He makes Peter King, Dr. Z and Clayton look amateur.

5-0 - Who'da thunk it?!?

Helluva win! Eventually people are going to have to stop with the fluke talk and start giving you guys the respect you deserve. Seriously, to my friends at MHR, congrats.

Brutal Stretch?

What brutal stretch? Every team in the NFL is tough. 5-0? Pretty darned good.

McGeorge...a big hug dude, we deserved this hard fought game.

Clearly on defense we dominated them in the second half, and gave our offense a chance to come back for a win. Awesome.

Congrats from a Steeler fan

On the 5-0 start. Always enjoyed watching the Broncos, and weve had some great games in recent memory

Anyways, congratulations on a huge win, and also on the start seeing as you were everyones favourite punching bag in the offseason, I guess its a case of who is laughing now?

Enjoy the win, and believe me when i say the rest of the NFL has noticed, and only ignorant minds do not take you seriously now.

Good luck, we shall visit you at Mile High shortly ; )

I don’t want him to kill any of Denver’s players. I’ve grown attached.

What I love:

This guy, McD, last year, said, “bring your pro-bowl quarterback and ridiculously awesome receivers into my house and I’ll beat you by 30 points. If you still don’t think I’m a good coach, then give me your team, 30 new players, a new staff, and a ‘game managing quarterback’, and I’ll turn around and beat the guy I worked for and the league’s best quarterback on your behalf”.

 I’m convinced.

Awesome game.

I had to DVR the game and watch it later. While I was at church, I was getting all kinds of texts but I didn’t answer them because I wanted it to be a surprise. I just finished watching it and WOW. What a game.

The one negative I saw was the punting special teams. Two TERRIBLE penalties and an ugly play between the Phonz and Royal trying to catch the ball at the same time.

Other than that, good game.

HIGH FIVES AND CHESS BUMPS

to my fellow Broncos fans! Awesome, awesome game. Can you imagine how confident our boys are now? Man – they know they BELONG in the post season. Anything short would be a big let down.

Broncos gave up too many points tho – but still have a shot at all time fewest points allowed in a season

by WarWolf on Oct 11, 2009 9:07 PM MDT reply actions

Funny how last year we’d be thanking Christ himself if our defense held a team to 17 points and now it’s too many. haha

LOVING IT!

was at work all day during the game so only saw the statistics and they looked good. Haven’t seen any of it yet.

by Matt In Canada on Oct 11, 2009 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

You'll love it

Dvr or NFL rewind the whole game – and try to have someone available to hug and hoist in the air afterwards. Real football played tonight. BDawk was slowed up but that only makes our collective team look more convincing.

Did Clady give up his first full sack in this game?

I couldn’t tell from the replay, it may only be recorded as half of one, but his man was definitely in on one of the sacks.

Hmmmm

According to this, still hasn’t given up a sack this season. I could have sworn on the replay of that 4th Q sack his blocking assignment got to Orton. But I guess I don’t know exactly how these sacks allowed stats work.
