Horse Tracks 10/12/09 - The 2009 Denver Broncos are 5-0. Yesterday was not a dream.

That was a "Wow" win and an eye-opener, even for me. There were so many points during yesterday's game at which prior Broncos teams would have folded. After those ST penalties, after letting Brady get the ball back late in the 4th quarter of a tied game, after trailing by 10 points at halftime - those were all moments where I thought the Broncos were toast. But this team is different. They are the best-coached Broncos team I have ever seen. No, of course they don't have the talent of the '97 and '98 teams; but this team is so well-prepared and they get better after halftime, every week. Mike Nolan's defense has allowed 7 second-half points all year - the late TD to Cincy. That's it. Anyone want to tell me Kyle Orton doesn't have what it takes? Guy is 5-0 with a 97.4 QB rating. The glove came off yesterday, and how many throws did you see him miss yesterday? Folks, the Denver Broncos are 5-0 with a 2.5-game lead in the division. A win next Monday in San Diego would basically be a 4-game lead...

pinch me
I haven’t been this happy with my Broncos for a long time. Let me officially say…
Watching Josh McD (coming from one who called him McDumb-ass many times) celebrate with the crowd yesterday ….I fell in love with him!! I give!! He IS all that.
I’ll refrain from all criticism and welcome all ‘told you so’s’ !!
Go Broncos!!

until we go up against SD on Monday night after their bye with a chance to hand them a losing record?
Come to think of it, that’s a great time to start supporting our HC! ; )

I’m a pretty tall guy and I enjoy punching holes in my ceiling from celebration jumps than punching holes in my wall in disgust.
This season has been very fun thus far. We seem to have answers to most of our problems. My hope is Payton Hillis is the answer to our short yardage running struggles. Other than that and punt return, there are no noticeable flaws in our team.
However, we better practice defending the screen pass. We’ve been stung by several in the past few games and San Diego is best in the league with hitting screens for monster plays.
Clady is a Hall of Fame talent. I can’t believe he doesn’t get more press. He is the kind of guy that you build a franchise around. Shanahan gave us a great going away present when he drafted Clady and Royal in his last draft.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

I thought we adjusted well to screens
against the Cowboys. And the Pats only hit the one on us for significant yardage yesterday. But yeah, those edge plays can be the achilles heel of this defense — and Sproles is not someone I want to see in open space.

Impressed!!!!
I am somewhat in the same boat WB. I missed the last 5 min of the game and overtime. My brother was texting me the updates and he said McD was going nuts at the end and loved it. If Orton keeps this up it will give us all reason to cheer. He finally looked comfortable. None to soon…..
I am from San Diego and can’t wait for this one. I got hundreds of messages from them last year from my SD peeps were giving me a rash. I told them it to enjoy it because another decade of mediocrity is right around the corner so let’s start that earlier than expected!!!!!!

Criticism
MHR was an oasis of reason for me during the offseason. There was so much unfounded negativism by “fans” spurred on by fraudulent and disingenuous journalists. I do not want that atmosphere of reason to change here at MHR to one of unfounded exuberance. It should still be a place where all opinions, whether negatively critical or positive, can be expressed within the bounds of civil discourse. What I am saying, Whidbey, is do NOT refrain from all criticism when warranted.

I’m starting to rethink the idea that this team doesn’t have the talent of 97 and 98. Well, 97 anyway. ; ) These guys are playing in a system that is designed for them, and they are getting good fast. No there’s no Elway and no TD, but I like our D a LOT next to those teams.

B Marsh
As one who thought (hoped?) we’d be fine without Marshall, there’s no question that we’re much better with him.
From week one, I think most of us would say we’ve seen potential in the new offense, but yesterday was THE DAY when I felt like the offense could go out there and win the game. What a joy to see KO’s healing, Moreno’s maturing, and Marshall’s return all contribute to such a great win.
I’m right here with you nyc on this: “…those were all moments where I thought the Broncos were toast. But this team is different.” What a cool game (and cool that it was national so many of us outlanders could see it live)!
Now I’m looking forward to a beatdown on the Dolts. They are still a tough veteran team, but I really have faith that our coaches will have the Broncos well-preapred. Nothing is for granted, and 5 wins won’t get you to the playoffs any more than 4. 6-0 at the Bye would be incredible, though!

Elvis, please crush Rivers...
What a great win. Good point about the special team fiascos. The D really stepped up (per their 2009 usual). It seemed like we forced 5 punts on that drive.
For all of you that said Denver should cut BM or trade him for cents on the dollar, shame on you.
For all of me that said McDaniels blew it by trading Cutler, shame on me. This Bronco team is muy bueno (expect short yardage running and ST return).
Man would I love to see Denver kick San Diego’s teeth in next Monday night.

I have to admit
I accused Marshall of being over-rated, of abusing weak defenses and disappearing against good ones. The last three weeks he has proved himself against good defense. Three weeks ago he abused Asamuoga on a 4th down catch to salt away the game. Then last week he abuses Newman on the catch then embarrasses the entire Dallas secondary on the run. Finally, yesterday he proved that he is a red zone weapon.
welcome back B-Marsh.
BTW: that was an awesome interview by Irving and man am I glad we have Dawkins!
by SlowWhiteGuy on Oct 12, 2009 7:38 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Marshall WAS overrated
He didn’t play like this the last three years. Drops are down. His routes are more precise. He’s money in the red zone. And he does things like run halfway down the field to swat down tipped balls.
The dude had 5 TD receptions all of last year. He now has four in his last three games. Same body, different dude.

On short yardage
I’ve been puzzled the last couple weeks to not see the QB sneak. Especially yesterday on 3rd and inches. Orton’s a big guy; I don’t see why he shouldn’t be able to get those little first downs…

If we can’t figure out how to obtain a 1st down on 3rd or 4th and mere inches, this will come back to haunt us at some point this season, likely several some points this season.
Our return game is a total mess, but the short yardage running is our biggest weakness.
I know several were complimentary of all the preseason passing we did in goal to go situations, but Denver has struggled for a good long while in short yardage running and I really wish we practiced this more in preseason. We look terrible on these plays (missed blocking assignments galore, allowing deep penetration, etc). It’s hurting us right now. Besides, BM is the most logical red zone WR we got and we didn’t even have him in preseason.
We need Hillis to work his way out of the doghouse and become a short yardage chain mover/TD scorer.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
by McGeorge on Oct 12, 2009 8:36 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I suspect we practiced it....
it just ain’t working (yet, I hope). I am not sure Hillis has the initial burst of power inhis first two steps it takes to do this particular job, he seems to be best when he has 3 to 4 steps to really get a head of steam. Seems like the play-calling needs to change, though…..we’ve already proved we can’t do it the way we’re trying to do it. Maybe Larsen is the answer we need for the blocking back. BTW, has anybody found out what he did to that shoulder… a severely torn rotator cuff or such could really cost him most of the season.

3rd and 5 inches is a QB sneak down. Must be done.
Or maybe we need to active Olsen and sub him in for Hamilton on short yardage running plays. Ben is playing is last season in Denver. He is getting blown to pieces on most of these running plays.

Yeah McG...Hamilton was BEYOND disappointing on short yardage blocking yesterday...
He got blown up 3 or 4 times and pushed back into our running backs. I was not too stoked on Moreno’s play in short yardage, but looking at highlights he NEVER had a chance.
My other though….why consistently run between the tackles on short yardage….every team knows it coming. I would like to see something off tackle that gives Moreno a chance to react.
Hillis needs back in. I would even think Jordan is a better option….Jordan running behind Hillis maybe?

In his defense...
Wasn’t he going up against Wilfork in a lot of those situations? I need to rewatch, so I might be off there. There’s very few men in this league that can withstand his bullrush in short yardage situations.

Yes it does.
We need a whole new strategy on short yardage running. What we have been trying has failed just about every time. No more running behind Hamilton in these situations. Orton needs to QB sneak on these 3rd/4th an inches plays. I can’t remember any QBs getting injured on a QB sneak so that should not be a reason why we keep handing the ball off to the RBs when all we need is an ulgy 8 inches on a QB sneak.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Happy we didn't try a sneak
That big gorilla Wilfork might have sat on KO and put him out for the year. I would like to see McD spread things out in short yardage. you can still run out of the gun and have the flexibility to pass.

Actually...
I’d rather see a Wild Horse direct snap Moreno sneak.
He’ll get more push than Orton and if he can break that line its almost always a TD. That way if Orton spots something in the D he can change the play.

Well
I think Baker steps in next year so we could forgo a 1st round D-Line and get a, uh, um….
Wait what do we need? Maybe a successor for Andra and DJ to groom at the ILB? Our another strong CB to groom? I think we have our next crop of safeties. Don’t need an RB, QB, TE, FB, or WR. Not in dire need of any OL help (I think our back ups will fill in nicely).
I guess you’re right on the D-Line unless Baker really steps up in the next season.
This is extremely eye opening for me. Look at our roster. Look at the depth we have. Wow.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
by ChristianL on Oct 12, 2009 2:18 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like Baker and Fields for now.
But we can do better at both DE spots. McBean and Peterson have done much better than expected, but the truth is we could still do better. A great 5 tech would be awesome.
If we are picking late enough in round 1, you can justify taking a OG or C, but I still say we go for best D-lineman (so long as the value is right).

That’s the exact way I see it, too. By all accounts, Baker is exactly the kind of player you want in the pipeline. Great size, tremendous athleticism, working hard, responding to coaching. Peterson and McBean are playing within themselves and I admire them much for it. They’re solid, but a better way to win consistently is with difference-makers in the trenches.

Bronx, McG
I see what you’re saying.
What current NFL player would best represent the prototype you think would fit? A Justin Tuck type?
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
by ChristianL on Oct 12, 2009 3:58 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not Tuck. He’s a pass-rusher. I’d think more Chris Canty when he was with the Cowboys, or Shaun Ellis or Aaron Smith. Richard Seymour was the gold standard in a 30-front, but he’s a distracting archetype because he rushed the passer, too. That’s, like, awesome if you can get it, but unreasonable to expect.

Too Early
It is too early for me to talk about next year’s draft when we have Polumbus, Gorin and Olsen still learning and the team is 5-0. But yes. Hamilton & Wiegman are closer to the end of their playing careers than to their beginnings.

For those of us that love the draft, it’s never too early to discuss.
Seattle fans are beside themselves with Denver’s success. They were already deciding whom they’d pick in the Top 5 with our pick. It’s fun to read their reaction to our season. I make a weekly trip to their website to enjoy.

It's a mixed bag..
While not strong enough to provide the short yardage push we need sometimes they’re also a big part of the reason Orton has so much time to throw. They are both excellent pass blockers and rarely miss making the right read on picking up blitzes. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to draft a G and / or C next year, I’d prefer we pickup a stud FA who can step in quickly both Hamilton and Weigman are getting close to retirement. If this year continues on track were going to have a lot more leverage in attracting the better FA’s. I’m not saying the “big name” FA’s but the FA’s that McD scouts and brings in for “fit”.

Not happening.
There will be no stud FA pickups in 2010.
Off the top of my head… we have to resign: BM, Elvis, Kuper, Orton and Scheff. This will be the most expensive offseason in Bowlen’s ownership of Denver. BM and Elvis will each command huge pay increases. If Orton continues to play well, he will be as expensive as those two. Even Kuper won’t be cheap. We may want to trade Scheff next week because I don’t see how we resign him.
Good year not to have a salary cap though.

Right.
I’d hate to see Scheff go, but picking up a late 2nd or early 3rd for him would be worth it.
Only way I can see everyone staying is if we win it all. And even now that is a pipe dream. But expect the unexpected from McD and X.
This is a new Denver team. We may see some veterans get traded for draft picks. Who knows?

and just when I was starting to like you :) With no cap and the prospect of taking this team to the next level (if we don’t get there this year of course) I look for McD to bring in a couple of sleeper FA’s that aren’t too pricey but still upgrade the team.

It was better than watching my beloved buffs, but it’s a really crappy product. You can only rush 5 and need four down linemen on defense. Baffling. Lots of washed up NFL talent on display, including former Bronco Simeon Rice.

Wild Horses Formation
I haven’t heard alot about the Broncos using the wild cat but it seems like we lined up in that package quite a bit yesterday. Was this expected, have we been using it already?
by Captain B on Oct 12, 2009 9:12 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I Didn't See it Coming
However is should be noted that it was more than the Wildcat. It was sort of an evolution of the wildcat to really encompass the passing game. Simms was in awe and I think he is right that this will suddenly be copied around the league.
Now we pretty much threw it out towards the end of the game so I don’t see it becoming our MO but it will reappear. Good against defenses that have lots of personnel groupings and like late substitutions.

What I liked the most about the Wild Horses.....
when Orton motioned under center and went to the pass……every time there wasnt a defender within 5 yards of the primary receiver……guranteed 10 yards every play ;)

Right
Well that was the McD brilliance evolving the plan. Now if the defense sets up to stop the run you just have Orton read it and come up under center. If they play a base defense you just run the ball. The change happens so last second the defense can’t switch personnel or schemes fast enough.
It was really interesting to watch.

I saw them practice it in Training Camp. In his Coach’s show a few weeks ago, Josh said we may see it sometime during the season. It was effective to get down the field for added confusion, but it might not even be used again this year.

KC and Oakland. Which is worse?
KC has won just 2 of their last 30 games…
Yikes. I knew they stunk, but that is pitiful. I don’t care how good KC used to be in December. We should pulverize KC both times this season. And I think we will.
Matt Cassel looked okay yesterday, but their somewhat highly regarded young secondary sustained 3rd degree burns from a backup WR. I love it. That franchise is just as lost as Oakland.

KC’s talent is overrated by the MSM hype machine. All we heard was how they had a monster 2008 draft blah blah blah.
The fact is Fat Alberts has been a disappointment at LT and Dorsey does not fit their 3-4 scheme which has minimized his impact. Trading away J Allen was a huge mistake.
They have a lot of high draft picks in their front seven but very few of them playing impact football. Derrick Johnson is 2nd string. Their offensive line is terrible; they have one good WR, no TE and not real threat at RB. When you strip away the MSM love, they really don’t have much talent at all. Just a lot of overhyped high picks that haven’t panned out. I can’t think of one guy on that team that is a legit All Pro candidate. Flowers may become a star, but beyond him, they pretty much suck.

they can get the rest of the team performing the offensive scheme. Don’t think they have the O-line to do it.

KC willl win some games this year. Like 2 or 3 games. Their O-line is a joke and their RBs are doing next to nothing. Just a few of their many problems on their way to 0-5.
I do not think Haley will be involved in any discussions for coach of the year.
That is bad team from top to bottom they got in KC.

So happy to see Marshall COMPLETELY hustle
His comeback to swat the ball down when it was tipped at the line of scrimmage was a great play, as was the way he broke up several possible interceptions on passes thrown his way.
He seems to be performing in all phases of the game. He is becoming (and may already be there) a complete player!
As a result, it should make the field wide open for Eddie from here on out!
Take my advice... I'm not using it!

Brandon and Orton were Co-MVP
Brandon deserves alot of credit for the swat and for switching it up to CB during that last drive and defending the near pick.
I think he’s realized that money is fleeting, but greatness last forever. And that is what I think is more important for him now.
I don’t even question he’ll be a model citizen for the rest of his career now. His turnaround is seriously motivational.

D-line too
One thing watching the game yesterday that stood out to me was how much Wilfork (and to a lessor extent Warren) was simply dominating our interior. While some of that is the last legs of Hamilton/Weigman, it also just shows what a great D-line can do. While I like the guys we have on the D-line, we had a lot of trouble getting much heat on Brady when we were bringing 4 (at least until Light was hurt).
The guys we have are workman-like and serviceable, but we dont really have that dominant up front guy that wreaks havoc consistently. Perhaps Baker can develop into that guy…. or hopefully we can draft/FA pickup someone next year. If we can get that, before the wheels fall off our old secondary (or if the young DBs develop behind them), this D will be very good for a long while….
by cjfarls on Oct 12, 2009 11:54 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
There are very few Wilforks...
Which is why I loved the Baker signing. I think taking a Raji or a Brace early in the draft is a bad move. Now, if Raji or Brace weighed in at, say, 350+ and played with leverage…
I’m actually glad Tyson Jackson was off the board at 12 and 18; because we already had him in McBean and Peterson for a whole lot less.

It Is Concerning
Our interior line has struggled against good 3-4 NT like Rodgers and now Wilfork. We face Ngata and Hampton still so I am somewhat concerned.

Key part of that Don Banks piece
I know I’ve cited Denver’s brutal October-November schedule for the last time this season. The Broncos are now 2-0 with wins over the Cowboys and Patriots at home during that challenging eight-game stretch, and I don’t think they’re going to fear any opponent at this point.
To me this is what I want to hear from everyone, that the Broncos should no longer have anything to PROVE even with more tough games coming up. Because you know what? They will lose a few games. That’s inevitable. But it should no longer be the be all to end all that proves whether they’re legit or not. They ARE legit. Period. And they will compete, they will, as Banks says, not fear anyone. So if they lose to San Diego, or the next tough game after that, that should no longer mean they are not legit. That story line is over, thank God.

You have to give the MSM credit
I think most analysts thought we were real much earlier but you can’t set up a good Cinderella feel good story without doubting a team for as long as they did.
There was a post not to long ago about how the 2009 Denver Broncos had all the pieces to make that storyline work and looked like the best contender to pull it off.
I can’t remember who wrote it (was a segment of a larger article) but that guy is patting himself on the back right now.

I think that was
Bill Simmons, who writes and blogs on ESPN. Kudos to him (and he’s a Patriots fan). I give anyone credit who admits they erred about them. And I also didn’t have a problem with MSM pundits who didn’t think they’d be a playoff team this year or had doubts about them or whatever; all that’s fair. What made me mad before the season even started is the incredible amount of ignorance about the Broncos on display from these guys when some simple research and investigation would’ve at least given them more food for thought about the Broncos before summarily dismissing them.

There was a point in the Dallas game...
…in the first quarter when they had scored ten unanswered points and the defense had been on the field a lot and I looked at them and thought they were about to crack. But they didn’t – they got it together and took over. (I read later that Dawkins had had a little talk with his teammates on the sideline about then.)
That was a “Wow” win and an eye-opener, even for me. There were so many points during yesterday’s game at which prior Broncos teams would have folded. After those ST penalties, after letting Brady get the ball back late in the 4th quarter of a tied game, after trailing by 10 points at halftime – those were all moments where I thought the Broncos were toast.
So, I never thought there was a moment that the Broncos were toast. Dawkins will never allow it.
