Kyle Orton - Pro Bowl QB?
Newbie post here, so feel free to flame the heck out of my naive analysis and ridiculously premature predictions.
Much has been made of Cutler's status as a "Pro Bowl" quarterback, and it's likely that his claim to that honor is one of the reasons why the trade with the Bears was even possible. But this post is not about Cutler 'The Pro Bowl' QB, it's about Orton, the 'Potentially Pro Bowl' QB.
Am I insane? Maybe, but my insanity has some reasoning behind it.
If we look at the top 10 QBs in the NFL right now, (by passer rating only), the list looks like this:
1 Peyton Manning, IND - 114.1
2 Eli Manning, NYG - 111.7
3 Drew Brees, NOR - 108.4
4 Brett Favre, MIN - 104.1
5 Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - 103.1
6 Matt Ryan, ATL - 102.9
7 Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - 102.6
8 Aaron Rodgers, GNB - 101.1
9 Matt Schaub, HOU - 97.9
10 Kyle Orton, DEN - 97.4
Kyle comes in at #10 and there's a big gap (7 points) between him and #11. It's probably a good assumption that he'll stay at #10 or higher...for at least awhile.
But if we're gonna look at Pro Bowl honors, we get to eliminate all of the NFC QBs on that list. For just the AFC, the list now looks like this:
1 Peyton Manning, IND - 114.1
2 Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - 102.6
3 Matt Schaub, HOU - 97.9
4 Kyle Orton, DEN - 97.4
Aside from Matt Schaub at Houston, (who Orton almost matches in passer rating, and would be ahead of, if he hadn't thrown that giveaway INT on Sunday), the only AFC QBs playing better than Kyle right now are two men that own 3 Super Bowl rings between them.
That's not to say that Kyle will continue at this level, but the trend in his performance over the last five games is encouraging.
Orton's Passer Rating by week:
1 @CIN 100.7
2 CLE 83.5
3 @OAK 92.1
4 DAL 117.5
5 NE 96.7
Weirdly enough, Kyle's worst games were against our easiest opponents, which leads me to another conclusion: Kyle might be a clutch player who plays better under pressure. Another good sign, considering the schedule ahead of us.
And...Orton is just looking better each week.
Out on a limb prediction? Orton will make the Pro Bowl this year as a backup QB, behind Manning and/or Roethlisberger.
On another topic: I was really impressed with Miami's Wildcat execution last night. The Chargers' defensive line is very banged up right now and is soft against the run; both inside and outside at the moment. What are the chances that we see the Wild Horses formation much more against the Chargers, than we did against the Pats?
What better way to control the ball and keep Rivers off the field, eh?
Cheers!

Well thought out....Well done...
From a personal standpoint, and this has nothing to do with you or the post – I could care less about the Pro Bowl. Give me ALL-PRO. Big difference and much more indicative of a players performance throughout the WHOLE season.

Thanks!
Really happy to be aboard!
I found out about MHR because of the dissing that was occurring in the Denver Post comment section. This place is so much more informed. Much more thoughtful and intelligent than most of the writers over there.
I’m really glad to be here. I hope to join in often.
Thanks again!

Orton, Pro Bowler??
Nice post – and welcome. As a relative novice myself, based in Northern Ireland, this site gives me great insight into all things Orange – and that statement has completely different connotations in this part of the world – and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
As for your post, I’ve been impressed by Orton’s management skills and his priority has been ball security. Like you say, the only blemish through five games was a garbage time INT, which he never would have thrown in any other circumstances. Apart from the bounce ball that Gaffney came down with, the Patsies never really threatened to pick him. I may be wrong, but I can’t recall a 5-game stretch where Cutler didn’t throw at least 2 or 3 picks, so hell yeah, I see that as an improvement. But as we know, the Pro Bowl is simply the NFL marketing department in full swing where a name and stats are everything. I’d be surprised to see Kyle make it, but your reasoning is sound, and there aren’t too many others – I’m deliberately avoiding naming a certain player up next on our sked – who I can’t help but think will make it….in short, I’d have to say, nice idea (and deserved at this current level) but I don’t see it. Doesn’t mean we won’t appreciate him any less though!
Good luck and again, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome.
I agree that the Pro Bowl is a marketing gimmick, and you’re probably right about Rivers…who is not playing nearly as well as Orton…but then again his OL sucks, and ours doesn’t.
My analysis is only skin deep, so I wouldn’t place too much stock in it. What it does tell me, however, is that Orton’s supporting cast is allowing him to finally reach his potential.
Is it the ‘system,’ or Orton? Is it both?
This may go back to JMac’s insanely smart moves with getting the right people, for his style of coaching.
Either way, I think that we’re gonna crush the Bolts on Monday night. That will make a statement, right there.
Thanks again!

Think you’re right. As we might have predicted, the Divisional Game against the Chargers is the most important one of this tough part of the schedule. In fact, I wouldn’t complain if we were to win this week, and then lose the two games against the Ravens and the Giants. If we win Monday, that really puts the Chargers in a hole, which I don’t see our D blowing this year.
Whatever the outcome of the season, I think we have witnessed not only the inception of a winning mentality based on a new offensive scheme (my only criticism of it is the lack of Hillis!), a team-oriented attitude and a coach with an eye for detail, be that gameplanning or free agency and drafting, but a whole new era. Sure, the wins sugarcoat everything, but that’s just it, everything has been changed, and for the better. I loved Shanny as much as the next Joe, but things had gone stale, and his star had lost some of its lustre. We needed the change, but I never expected it to be so quick – especially after an uninspired preseason sequence. It’s easy for people to jump on the bandwagon now, but I honestly think if we finish 11-5, then McD is taking COY awards home in a flash. Sure hope so.
As we stand, I think we can handle the Ravens, but on the road will be tough. The Giants are a tough proposition. That may be a step too far, and the Colts are always our nemesis, but the way this 3-4 is stacking up, maybe we can slow down the Manning juggernaut for once. My money is on 11-5. Given the offseason we had, that would be a great effort by the whole organisation. What do you think?
by MileHighMan on Oct 13, 2009 1:10 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think we can handle the Ravens also...
the Giants, however, I think are the best team in the NFL. Maybe tied with the Saints.
I think that the Colts are overrated, but playing them on their own turf is gonna be really tough.
Either way, this game against the Chargers will probably chart the path to the playoffs…for both teams.

Wow, you took the words out of my mouth
Pro Bowl is nothing more than a popularity contest. It’s like me trying to explain to my wife why everyone loves Cutler and Orton is always treated like he’s a red-headed step child. Goes something like this;
me “Yes, I know Cutler has never had a winning season, yes I know Orton wins games.”
wife “So why dont people like Orton more.”
me “I guess Cutler can throw the ball hard, I dunno”
wife “- – - – - – - – -”
Trey Wingo went as far as saying Orton will be the reason Denver looses the division this year, even after the we beat the Patriots. Everyone loves to hate him for some reason.

ooh ooh i'm with you all the way !
except for the beatdown part.
San Diego is pretty decimated by injuries which sounds a lot like us last year, which makes me sad. I’d rather see our Broncos beat them fairly with their full squad at full strength than to make a statement etc. on a weaker roster.
I sort of think/hope that Coach McDaniels might have learned something from the year the Pats were blowing everyone out and sort of running up the score on teams and then lost to Eli in the Super Bowl to end their perfect season.
i don’t even know if there is a lesson to take from that season, except that anything can happen and that karma can be a bitch, but i sort of hope we don’t blow anyone out except in the playoffs.

I don't think that we'll run up the score on purpose...
but the Bolts do have a good QB. We need to get a cushion early, so that we force Rivers to throw 40 – 45 times…way down field.
If they’re running game can’t get started, that will force Rivers to carry the game. Our secondary is gonna get a workout on Monday night.

Can anyone answer this question.
Kerry Collins and Jay Cutler went to the probowl last year over Rivers for what reason…? Ridiculous pro-bowl selections for quarterback last year. Manning was the only one that deserved the trip. Rivers should have gone in place of Jay or Collins, hands down (and YES I was saying this last year when Cutler played for us!)

First off, I love the handle. :)
I don’t think that Kyle has a reasonable chance of making the pro bowl. He’d have to vastly outperform Manning, Big Ben, Rivers, and Brady to make it. Unfortunately, as everyone said above, it’s not really about win/loss and stats with the pro bowl. His only hope is that this team really tears up the league and he puts up such gaudy numbers that people have to take notice. It would probably require some serious fluffing by SI and ESPN to get him there.
I’d take a deep playoff push over either pro bowl or all-pro any day, and I’m sure Kyle would, too. :)

by OrangeKnuckleDragger on Oct 13, 2009 2:15 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I predicted
Right after the Cutler trade and in a discussion about Cutler being a pro-bowl QB and how that was overrated that Orton would be a pro-bowl qb this year. Reason why was Orton style of play and in this offense, he would get good numbers. Besides 3 qb’s of 16 teams go to pro-bowl. Take away injuries, qb contoversies and there are about 10 QBs elegible. so I don’t think it is any real big deal that he becomes a pro-bowl QB. Except in the pundits observation of the Cutler trade in which Denver recieved a pro-bowl QB and 2 firsts and a third for a pro-bowl QB.
I say that tongue in cheek because my view is that the trade was equal.

So barring another injury or massive Patriot losing streak, Brady will also be in the running simply because of his name. I reckon Manning makes it and the other 2 spots fall between Roethlisberger, Brady, Orton and Schaub.

Aside from a ridiculous explosion of production,
you’ve hit on his best chance. People love a story, and if ESPN/SI run with the redemption story, he could get there. ONce you make it once, it becomes easier to make it in, I think. I guess people feel more comfortable voting for you a second time.

Pro bowl is all about having a big name
Most fans out there only believe what they hear in the media. Orton is only a “game manager” in their eyes. Those players don’t get votes. Also don’t forget Brady, Rivers and Carson Palmer. They all are much “bigger” names than Kyle, despite the FACT that Orton will beat all of them this season.

It’s all about voting. Chicago fans are still on his jock. He WILL make it in.

bchiper,
Thanks, I’ll dig into it tonight. I appreciate the link, since I’ve conflated the two together. Brain fart on my part.
Thanks again!

Kyle Orton
Orton is an interesting quarterback. When he does poorly he looks especially geeky. When he does well you don’t notice it till the offense is down in scoring position. Next thing you know Denver is winning – surprise, surprise. Coach McDaniels pays attention to learning styles. Seems to me that Kyle needs reps, then he gets it. You have not seen Orton’s best yet . Same is true for the entire team. The whole team is deep into learning and getting better. They are addicted to it at this point. Hang on to your hats boys and girls – you ain’t seen nothin yet.

I agree that we haven't seen the offense hit on all cylinders yet...
which is why I think that we’ll see it against the Chargers.
Another limb for me, but…I think that the Broncs are gonna hit a season high for points on Monday night. I’m predicting between 28 and 38 points, because the Bolts’ defense is almost as bad as the Raiders ‘D’

Pro Bowl Nuthin'
I’m thinking 11 or 12 years playing for McDaniels and we’ll be seeing a bronze neckbeard next to John Elway in Canton :)

Well, it looks like KO just got his first bit...
of recognition: AFC Offensive Player of the Week. If he puts on a ‘show’ against the Bolts on Monday night, he might get enough name recognition going to have a shot at the Pro Bowl.
Who knows?
Either way, the confluence of McD and KO may be one of those special things…

KO a TEAM player
What KO has is smarts & leadership traits and great timing to his WR’s. Having watched all 5-games, what I’ve notice about KO is his ablity for throwing timing passes and getting rid of the ball quickly making it hard for the defenses to sack him. KO is extremely accurate passer and if he can stay healthy just might make the Pro Bowl as a Bronco. The cameradrie and chemistry on this team is special and we just need to set back and let it unfold. What has me excited is that the Broncos are getting closer to their full potential on offense and special teams. This team will be remember for its leadership and winning. It all starts with the players committed to the Head Coach & his staff. Go Broncos!

I don't want to get too optimistic on KO...
since past history is not an indication of future results, as all the Mutual Fund folks will tell you.
However, he’s fun to watch isn’t he?
It’s like watching someone grow better, every week. When’s the last time that we saw that?

Welcome aboard OKD
Great post and rec’d but I do want to quibble with one thing you said:
Newbie post here, so feel free to flame the heck out of my naive analysis and ridiculously premature predictions.
First time posters owe no apologies for their posts. I did not see your comments as naive nor premature. You presented a well thought out consideration of facts. I appreciate your contribution to MHR. Keep ’em coming.

That professional journalists wrote articles with half as much thought and research.

I blush... ;-)
You folks are great, and I’m glad that I found MHR.
Those ‘professionals’ spend too much time talking to each other, reinforcing the ‘Conventional Wisdom.’ It’s just a giant echo chamber.
In my book, if you wanna know the real story, ask a blogger. They actually have to defend what they write.
Thanks again.
Got a long post in the draft box for tomorrow. It’s more numbers and stuff… Y’all will be getting tired of me, right quick.
Cheers!

I just got through talking to The Hater.
I finally sent him a screen shot of the top ten QB’s in the league by yardage, so he could see how Orton stacks up against his peers. The guy is getting it done, plain and simple.
That said, the NE game was the first one where I’d say Orton wasn’t just managing the game – he won it. That’s to say, it took a team effort but Orton carried the team and played like a true leader.
I want to see a few games in a row like that before he’s anointed but I am liking what I am seeing so far.
Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

I agree that we need more 'data' before we draw hard conclusions...
but KO’s trend line is very promising, IMHO.

Had ta vote 'what are you smoking?'
just because it could connotate either answer,
what are you smoking, of course!
Or What are you smoking, heavens no!
I picked it with the former in mind, but yeah, I would be dumbfounded if he made it. I would love it, but be surprised.
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and we oughtta let someone else have a fair shot : )

LoL
I guess “I picked it with the former in mind” should be in bold… I would only be surprised because I would have to agree that the Pro Bowl is basically a populartiy contest. But in retrospect, I can definitely see how it can come off that way.
I would dig it if Kyle proved himself to the point where we don’t see Brandstater for years, and retire a Bronco (with multiple rings, of course) {for the record}.
; )

Vote Early, Vote Often! ;)
I didn’t think he had a chance at the AFC player of the week, but I voted for him and he won. I’d be delighted to see him get to travel to Florida in February, although to be honest I’m really hoping it is a bit earlier in the month!
If Kyle gets the Pro-Bowl, then will we trade him for another smart quarterback and picks?
::grin::
