Kyle Orton named AFC Offensive Player of the Week
Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will be named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for games played during the fifth week (Oct. 11-12) of the 2009 season, the National Football League informed the Broncos on Tuesday.
Orton's selection as his conference's Player of the Week is the first such award of his five-year NFL career.
The quarterback was recognized by the NFL after completing 35-of-48 (72.9%) passes for 330 yards with two touchdowns and one interception (Hail Mary pass attempt) for a 96.7 rating in Denver's 20-17 overtime win against New England on Sunday. He led two touchdown drives of at least 10 plays and 90 yards against the Patriots, including a 12-play, 98-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that tied the game and eventually forced overtime.
Orton's 35 completions were a career high and tied for the third-highest single-game total in the NFL this year. His 72.9 completion percentage also was a personal best and marked the second-highest game total in Broncos history among players with at least 45 pass attempts.
A former standout at Purdue University, Orton is the Broncos' 44th AFC Offensive Player of the Week winner since the award was initiated by the NFL in 1984.

to a guy that exemplifies what being a Denver Bronco really means. He is tough, smart, plays with pride and desire and is extremely well prepared and coached. Way to go Kyle!

I am sending this to The Hater
I keep telling him, this is not the Kyle Orton you’re used to. I really think this guy has been underrated and he CAN play.
I want to see this kind of solid performance on a consistent basis before we anoint the guy but so far so good. Great honor for Kyle and big point of pride for Broncos Nation.

Won't be the last time
Kyle totally won the lottery coming here to Denver and playing under the incredible Coach Josh McDaniels. The perfect teacher and the perfect student. I trust Coach. If he thought enough of Orton to dramatically bring him here then he must be the man.

Perfect teacher, perfect student
That is so true, but maybe this is a chain…… BB to McD, McD to KO and team, and in 10 years maybe we’ll spin off another great coach. Kind of a pay-it-forward type of thing.

Loved his halftime interview
where he pretty much gave the entire team credit, didn’t try to say, yeah i’m jay cutler and i have a stronger arm than elway, took the team on my back, blah blah…
I hope this TEAM attitude continues.

Way to go, KO!
I was yelling that phrase in chant-rhythm all through that 98 yard drive! I rally felg glad for him all through the game.
KO, you earned this in so many ways by what you did in preparation, what you did on the field, and what you put up to get here. I know you’ll stay focused on improving, just as you have since you came into the league.
Hey guys, remember when people would say he hadn’t improved enough in his first 3 years and was at his ceiling? Boy, am I glad KO is proving that assertion to be premature.

Add that to a young HC. We’re on track to a solid solid future, guys!

by topnation on Oct 13, 2009 5:29 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, the "Away throwback game"
Each AFL team has to wear the throwbacks at least twice, and no more than 4 times. Of the required two, one has to be home and one away. So this week will be the “away” brown and white, with no yellow…
Other AFL teams are choosing to wear it 4 times, our beloved team chose only two times. I wish they had the option of also busting out the 80s orange with the big D logo…

80s Orange

X2 ncm42.
Most of my Broncos attire is real orange, not “predominately” orange. And that era’s attire is my favorite. I have some with the newer (1997-up) stylized horse, but I like the big D with the snorting horse better.

How about the Broncos
Take a picture of Kyle in the Spicy Brown Mustard uniform with the afc player of the week award and for now, blow it up and put it at the entrance of Dove Valley so it can be appreciated by his colorblind team mates.Along with McD pumping his fist and jumping into Peterson’s arms.

John Elway says...
There are many things that can only be learned in a game situation. It usually takes about half a season for a quarterback new to a system to start to be able to ’ work it’. How wonderful to win all your games while the quarterback and the whole team are still learning a new system. Learning a new system well enough in 5 games for the quarterback, Kyle Orton, to get the AFC Offensive Player of the Week ! Wow.

Kyle was definitely my fave of the Bears QBs of recent years.
He had a really good season going in 08 before his ankle injury, and then almost no time to get back into the groove when he returned.
Very happy for him to have landed in an organization that suits him to a T, and that has certainly benefited from his play, too.
Congrats to Kyle, and to the Broncs!

Wow, I just realized how much better it feels to be a huge Orton fan than a Cutler one. Just to know that he is such a class act and he won’t lose you games, he’s a fun guy to cheer for.

Can’t believe I just assumed you were the throw in guy to compete for a backup position! Wow was I ignorant! Couldn’t be more thrilled with your style of football!
Efficiency may not come with a lot of flash, but under McD it will come with a ton of points! Bank it!

Way to go Orton…. my question is, has anyone heard from John Clayton lately? I’m probaby just behind on the curve here because I’ve been busy with work, but I haven’t seen any acknowledgment from that football guru yet. I have been loving Sundays the last few weeks. Living in Richmond, VA, I’m subjected to the Foreskins every week. Thank god for high profile games!

Congratulations, Kyle!
Greetings to all my SBNATION friends! I don’t say much, mostly post short hurrah’s for my posters and broncos. I’m a life-long Bronco fan and I must say I am more excited this year than years past. I never cared for Culter or his snobbish attitude. Orton exemplifies, professionalism, hard work and experience. He is the perfect fit for this team and for McD. Congratulations KO, for Offensive Play Of The Week.

well,
when put in those terms, yeah, orton is a pretty good quarterback, denvers defense is pretty solid, and the Broncos are a pretty good team.
but they were so bad in 2008, possibly the worst defense ever, even considering peewee football you know, and cutler can make every throw, even in outerspace with aliens shooting at him with laser beams.
jury is still out until they win some games that actually matter without relying on flukey statistics like “scoring” to gauge success.
still looks to be 3-13 team.

My prediction...
This is going to get that fellow in Chicago riled up. Ever since the Green Bay game, he’s been playing Orton-ball… short, accurate passes, and winning. It must be killing him to want to air it out. This award will get his competitive juices flowing (and we know how cocky he can be). He’s going to want to take some extra chances. I predict we’ll see Bad Jay this week.
