Woody,the dying breed

I think Woody has a little of the Shanahan syndrome

Star-divide

in that he’s been such a good columnist for so long with all the accolades, television, people telling him how great he is that maybe he forgot(old age?) the person he was and who he wanted to be coming out of that great school, the University of Tennessee. Before the internet everybody bought the newspaper that Woody worked for,he was in such demand that he worked for both papers and went wherever the money was best, just like professional atheletes. No one can fault him for that and when he went back East we all(the older crowd missed him and read his stuff online and watched him on television).
Make no mistake Woody can write and make the reader feel it.Maybe moreso in the days gone by,but weren’t we all better in our youth?I know he fired up the Jagwads before we lost that playoff game from the 96 season and some stories actually put tears in my eyes feeling the emotion he put into them but those of you that don’t know the stories prior to the internet,Woody was the one who wrote the truth about Denver sports. He wrote the stories behind the heros.I may not agree with everything he writes but Woody has been one of the best,if not the best sportswriter in Denver history and when he’s done he’ll be missed as much as Bob Martin
Woody,if you happen to read this I wish you the best and thanks for all the memories and I wish I’d known Elvis growing up—great stories, great writing.

Nice sentiment BC

Woody’s a personality — he’s been in this game a long long time and isn’t out for people to love or hate him. Frankly, positive or negative, I don’t really care. I’d take him over a Bill Williamson passionless pen any day of the week. And, in a way, he’s very much tied to the legends that we love, having covered the Broncos for so long. The story of sports in Denver is incomplete without Mr. Paige, imho. I’ve had arguments with him before, and he’s always been kind enough to personally reply. He’s a goof, but he’s not aloof. : )

Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

I'm dating myself...

But I remember when he first showed up in Denver, when I was a kid.

Sometimes my Dad would get so angry when reading his columns in the DP, that he’d yell at the newspaper.

It’s sort of funny…now.

Yeah, he’s a part of Colorado sports history. No doubt. And yes, sometimes he ‘phones’ it in now.

But he always got emotional reactions from his writing, even when he first showed up on the scene.

Fired up at Woody

You know, I’ve heard that the opposite of love isn’t hate…it’s apathy. Maybe the value in having people stir the pot is in raising an emotional response, whether that response is positive or negative.

That said, I think my frustration stems from a lack of balance. There are a lot of pot-stirring writers out there (some are good writers, many are hacks), but it’s becoming harder to find solid, rational analysis. If there were a good balance of rational analysts and well-read stirrers, I think we’d have a great intellectual environment.

"Don't feed the trolls. Remember to be polite. And please show self-restraint in comment length!" -Me, to myself, because I need constant reminding.

I am right there with you

My dad would just get madder than hell. To this day you will never convince my Dad that woody ever lived anywhere other than NY city. Course that is because that "is the only place that big an Assh@le could come from!

nice sentiment

maybe I’ve been too harsh on him, but its his choice how to deal with/write about the Broncs…..this year he has been disloyal as far as I’m concerned. I imagine he did it b/c he felt strongly about some things, but he blew it.

Your nice points made me think of D. Vader….once a “good” Jedi, then evil leader, then back to the fold…..maybe thats what Woody will do, I hope so. He still has some loyalty to prove……its like in Band of Bros…..“you salute the rank, not the man”….he needs to forget how McD makes him feel and support his team.

A sportswriter's job isn't to be loyal.

It is to report what’s happening with the team and give his perspective on it. Some of them may choose to be loyal but Woody’s paid to editorialize about Denver sports, not to be a fan. He should write what he sees, and give his honest point of view.

Personally I’ve never taken him seriously as a sportswriter so it was hard for me to get too worked up over any of his hatred for the new regime.

Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

Ouch

Enough with the “Jedi” stuff, painful

no, but a fan should be

I’m pretty sure he is a fan, he should be welcomed back to the fold like all the other fans that doubted and hammered their team before any games were played…..as a media personality, he immediately became the leader of that section of fans that refused to believe, hence the Vader analogy……so he was a disloyal fan and his judgment obviously stinks.

I think he brings a big ego to the table….its tough for me to enjoy anyone that writes with so much pride in himself…..ala Woody’s high fallutin statements about his role in Denver sports and who he knows….parts he clearly adds to stroke his own ego and perpetrate his greatness…..the fact is, Woody is a good wordsmith, and just that. I really get tired of writers/critics that put themselves up front in their articles and stomp on the people in “the ring”, as TR said. I wish he could serve the Denver public with an enlightened understanding of his role, not take advantage of it. This involves muting personal attachments (shanny maybe) and ego (avoid personal characterizations and focus on issues).
