The Broncos and...Bamboo

In the wind, I bend.

The storm rages and mighty Oaks crack.

In the morning, I still stand.     - Unknown

Star-divide

Football is almost as good as Baseball for generating the 'statistics' that we nerds love to chew on.  For those folks in Fantasy Leagues, it's Mother's Milk.  But the one thing that Fantasy Leagues don't capture is a holistic view of the real teams from which we draft our players...and in my opinion, one of the most under-appreciated statistics in Football is the 'Bendability Index.'

Up until about five years ago, this statistic didn't even really exist.  At the intersection of Football Fandom and Statistical Geekdom, there occasionally comes a simple tool that reveals many truths.  The Bendability Index (BI) is one of them.

The BI was created by a few enterprising folks over at ColdHardFootballFacts.com, who apparently had way too much access to spreadsheets, (and way too little access to girlfriends).  At any rate, the BI shows some important things about a Football team:  It tells us how hard our opponents have to work in order to score points against us.

Now this may sound like a purely 'defensive' statistic, but it isn't.  It encompasses many things like special teams play, offensive field position, turnover ratio and how well a defense can 'flex' without breaking, i.e. giving up points.  It's a simple calculation and it works something like this:  Take the 'Total Number of Yards Allowed' and divide it by the 'Total Number of Points Allowed.'

It's pretty simple, but there is just a little more to it.  The inventors of this stat decided to normalize this ratio against a 'touchdown.'  What this means is that instead of taking the pure ratio of Yards to Points, we look at how many yards a team has to travel, in order to score 'seven points' against us.  So, the actual BI is calculated this way:  'Total Number of Yards Allowed' divided by 'Total Points Allowed' times 'Seven.'

Now here is the interesting bit:

The 2009 Broncos are currently sitting on a mind numbing BI of 205.8 yards per seven points(TD).  What this means is that our opponents have to travel from goal line to goal line, TWICE, in order to score seven points against us.  This is the probably the highest BI seen in the NFL since this statistic has been tracked.

Doesn't sound that impressive?

The Atlanta Falcons are the  #2 team in the league at this statistic, and their BI sits at 158.1 yards per 'TD.'  The Colts are currently sitting at #3 with a BI of 145.7 yards per 'TD' and it drops sharply from there.

As a point of reference, the 2008 Broncos racked up a BI of 93.8 yards per 'TD.'  Currently, the 2009 San Diego Chargers hold a BI of 100.4 yards per 'TD.'

And while we're on the subject of the Chargers, there seems to be two schools of thought with respect to predicting the outcome of the game on Monday night:  The Sun Tzu school and the Statistical School.

In the 'Art of War' by Sun Tzu, the great Chinese general proposed that if you wanted to get the best out of your troops, you placed them on Killing Ground; a place from which they could not retreat and had to fight...or die.  This might describe the situation with the Chargers at the moment, on whom great expectations were placed at the beginning of the season.  They are desperate and will surely fight hard on Monday night.

But will that be enough?

Lets look at the Statistical School for a moment.  The Chargers' defense is currently ranked #26 in the NFL for yards allowed per game, and #25 in the NFL for points allowed per game - barely above Oakland and Kansas City.  They truly have one of the worst defenses in the league, regardless of their record.   Is that miserable defense offset by home field advantage...combined with some mystical hold that they have over the Broncos due to last year's performance?

The Bolts fans can look back to last year and cling to a slender thread of hope, but that thread does not exist anymore.  The Broncos are a completely different team this year...and the Chargers are about to find that out.

On Monday night, we'll discover which 'school' was more right.

Cheers!

-OKD

P.S.    For those who like numbers, here's a fun little exercise in which we can use the BI to predict the score of a game  -  Take the Average Offensive Yards per Game of each team, divide it by the other team's BI, and multiply by '7.'

For Monday night's game against the Chargers, here's what I come up with:

Chargers - 349.3 Average Yards/Game divided by 205.8 Yards/TD x 7 equals:  ~12 points

Broncos -  376.8 Average Yards/Game divided by 100.4 Yards/TD x 7 equals:  ~27 points

So there's the score folks:  Broncos 27, Chargers 12.  Looks like the Bolts will be either kicking field goals, or missing extra points.

Adjusting for home field advantage (-3) would make it Broncos 24, Chargers 12.

Fun with numbers, eh?

Thanks, but they're not really that good.

Besides, I was laid off several weeks ago and I’ve got time on my hands now. I’ve always liked writing…just haven’t really had the time, up until now.

Thanks again for the compliment.

I might as well keep folks entertained, if I’ve got nothing else to do, eh?

Cheers!

I wish.

But I’m far from being a decent ‘sports writer.’ I’m more of a snarky numbers geek. I did play football in HS and college, but that was many years ago…

on the other side of the ball, the Denver offense needs to travel 133 yards for every 7 points scored

Hopefully this gets reduced with KO’s healed knuckle and an increased familiarity between the players in McD’s offense. But with our anemic return game, it’s hard to say.

Great post, btw.

Thank you. You bring up a really good point...

That is sort of the flip side of the BI.

The Broncos are #6 in the NFL in average yards per game, but only #22 in the NFL in average points per game.

That’s not a good thing for us, and needs to come back into alignment, if we’re gonna go deep into the playoffs. We’re working too hard for our points.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Cheers!

Not trying to start anyone on a rant, but...

I wonder what the O’s anti-BI was last year. It must’ve been crazy bad.

Per NFL.com

http://www.nfl.com/stats/team?seasonId=2008&seasonType=&Submit=Go

2008 Broncos Offense had 395.8 yds per game and scored 370 points, while their defense allowed 374.6 yards per game (5993.6 total) and gave up 448 points…hm…what’s that formula again?

by kaze9999 on Oct 15, 2009 12:20 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

thx....great points...like these CHFB facts

I would give one more angle that relates to set up to choke: Broncs could be said to be set up b/c they are coming off their most emotional game and victory…not sure if thats true, but we’ll know if they start turning the ball over ag SD

The other set up is that while SD has all this pressure on them, backs ag the well, they have to have a strong foundation that gives them confidence going into this game….that foundation comes from coaching…..guess what, it doesn’t exist. The only foundation is whatever Rivers can pull out of his hat and I don’t doubt him…..Still like the Broncs by the score you predict

Thanks.

The parallels between the 2008 Broncos and the 2009 Chargers is actually quite interesting: Productive offense, coupled with a bad defense. And that offense rests on the shoulders of a gunslinger.

I’m optimistic.

Difference in Offense

Is that the 2008 Broncos could run the ball and the 2009 Chargers can’t.

Very true, which makes the comparison ...

too kind. They might actually be in worse shape than the 2008 Broncos.

by OrangeKnuckleDragger on Oct 14, 2009 4:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not True

The 2008 Broncos actually ran the ball very well. It is deceptive since we had so many injuries there. We were ranked 12th in the league.

If ya'll haven't noticed

the chargers have become the old “Air Coryell” of nfl and it isn’t because they really want to either. LaDamian Tomlinson is not playing at 100%. If any of you watched the game against the Steeler will see this fact. Boy, they sure put on a good game face though. Without a running attack they are forced to throw through the air, although they ahd 2 weeks to recuperate from injuries, I don’t think things will change that much going into Monday night. Shawn Merriman is also injured playing with his best game face on and pundits are already saying he has lost a step or two. We witnessed last season when Champ Bailey went down to injury that when he came back it was noticable he wasn’t playing at 100%. Great players play through pain and have that nack of not showing it, look at BDawk with his play against the Pats, broken hand, hurt shoulder, but still playing and giving all of his best. Thank goodness we have one extra day this week to get over aches and bruises. Let’s go kick some dolt booty.

by bfree2bronc on Oct 14, 2009 11:11 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Very true.

And I like the ‘old school’ reference, because I think that it accurately captures what is going on the Bolt’s offense right now.

Rivers is gonna be slinging it all night, so our secondary is gonna get a serious workout. Their running game is shot, for now. LT is not what he was in past years, and Merriman is a bit of a mess.

BTW, did you notice that Jr. Seau just re-signed with the Bolts and is coming back out of retirement.

Should we take that as a sign of desperation???

by OrangeKnuckleDragger on Oct 14, 2009 11:19 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seau actually signed with the Pats.

But I concur with the overall analysis. I’m hoping for plenty of 3 TE sets, and just ram the ball down their throats. It minimizes the turnover risk, and keeps that pass-happy offense of the Chargers off the field.

Even though they claimed that 'no major' moves would...

be taken during this bye week, wasn’t this one consdiered almost inevitable at some point?

Either way, A.J. Smith made a mistake, IMHO, by calling them ‘soft’ publicly. That’ll certainly ‘motivate’ them to hate the management, for sure.

Eeeek. They need to take lesson from Bowlen.

Things won't change that quickly in SD

The reason being is the coaching, or lack their of. I don’t think they have “teachers” like we do. Teachers can make a change in a short span and our beloved Wild Horses are a testament to that. Turner and Rivera, from reading a lot of SD’s blogs, just do not strike me as teachers.

BTW, going through their blogs, I have come to one conclusion – the SD fans are afraid and their tone of voice is “HOPE.” They are hoping their team wins this Monday or else, they’ll be in too deep a hole ot get out it and relinquish their thrown as the AFC West champs. They can’t stand the thought that they’re going back to their mediocre ways of old. They’ve had their run. So, they “make up” scenarios in their blogs like, the Broncos will lose this or that game and come the 7th or 8th game of the year, the Broncos will be 5-3 and we’ll tied or only a game behind, etc, etc. But I guess they love their team and feel for them, as we do ours. Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting the same sense from the ESPN boards as well...

The smell of fear is rampant. The Bolts fans are concocting crazier and crazier scenerios about the game, as well as the Bronc’s chance of success over the next 3 games.

They seem to think that their next three games are gimmies…

I understand where they are coming from, but I didn’t go ‘stupid’ at the end of last season. I was sad, but rational to the very end.

Other Bolts fans want the team to crater, so they can pitch Norv sooner. It’s kinda weird, seeing that…

by OrangeKnuckleDragger on Oct 14, 2009 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, I don't really care that much. Let the Chargers implode and we can dominate them for years to come.

They have fewer dominant pieces than they thought. The only real addition to their team was Sproles a few years ago. Everything else is holdover from years ago when they were a good team. They can’t seem to move on from the 14-2 season. It’s unfortunate that the owner wouldn’t make significant roster moves to get them over the hump, but what are you gonna do? In the NFL, if you’re standing still, you’re going backwards.

I'm good with that.

I’m not looking past them at all, but I think this game will mark the point that most experts declare them to be ‘imploding.’

I’m really looking forward to the game. Wish I could be in SD to watch it live.

I hear that there are still about 1,500 tickets available. They can’t even sell out for a Monday night game?

I agree 100%.

It didn’t work out too well for us last year, and I don’t think that it will work out for the Chargers this year.

Norv Turner will not be the coach next year…heck, he may not even make it to the end of the season.

Chargers Fan Rationale for predicting the Game

So I was reading the San Diego Union Tribune. And this was a comment from a reader, obviously a chargers fan. I am paraphrasing here, but I kid you not this was the jist of his comment.

“In the Chargers worst game against Pittsburgh, the Chargers scored 28 points. In the Broncos best game against Cleveland the Broncos scored 27 points. So even if the Chargers play their worst and the Broncos play their best, the Chargers should win 28-27.

OMG, I don’t even know where to start with the holes in that rationale.

by RockyMountainThunder on Oct 14, 2009 12:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Is that the rationale of their coaches too?

Clearly with a sizable lead the Steelers began to play softer along with a couple of mistakes. The chargers almost got beat by the lowly raidas for crying out loud. If I were a dolts fan I would keep my mouth shut until they start playing better football.

by bfree2bronc on Oct 14, 2009 12:18 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow. That's just sad.

When you don’t have reality on your side…it seems that wishful thinking takes over.

That’s why I’ve really enjoyed my short time here at MHR. I’m guessing that if anyone tried to use that kind of rationale here, they would be flayed alive.

Even though my ‘numbers’ analysis shows that we probably won’t beat our season high for points, my gut tells me we’re gonna have an offensive breakout.

SD’s defense is poorly ranked, and in bad shape. Couple that with the visible improvements with Orton and the offense, and everything seems poised to just ‘click.’

I hope I’m right. I think that the BI based prediction is actually on the lower end of the range, but we’ll see on Monday night.

I’m jazzed.

How Funny

That comment by that reader was an answer to my question when I was on their blog. I was just trying to hit a nerve with those guys. My question was, “Can any of you SD fans tell me how your team can win this game?” And that was his answer, after I posted that question about 3-4 times.

calBronco1

by calbronco1 on Oct 14, 2009 6:27 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

BTW

I kept asking that question after making comments about how bad of a beating they’re going to take given how bad their really team is. The bad thing about that blog is whenever someone replies to my post it copies to my email. I deleted them, but I was getting answers up to this morning. I should have saved their answers – they all sounded desperate.

calBronco1

by calbronco1 on Oct 14, 2009 6:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

So lets see...

In the Chargers worst game they gave up 38 points to the Steelers and in the Broncos best game the gave up 3 points to the Raiders. So even if the Chargers play their worst and the Broncos play their best, the Chargers should be blown out 38-3…

Is that how that logic works? I’m confused????

by Rain on Oct 14, 2009 8:29 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Chargers did beat Miami

And held them to, what? — 10 points?

This game isn’t a gimme.

Broncos and Bamboo??

Good to see your first post inspired another one, my friend!! And what a quality one – bery insightful. I love MHR – so many good, intelligent writers out there who post stories we’ve all got in our minds, but then put them down so well, that we all end up thinking, “Now, why didn’t I think of that!!” Top marks OKD all the way from Northern Ireland! Hope the layoff is only temporary – it’s as bad this side of the pond. Not nice. I wish you well.
