BFTB Answers Your Chargers Questions II
Since my original post has been pushed off the page (You guys sure write a lot of FanPosts!), and a lot of people seem to be looking for that post to ask me additional questions leading up to Monday's game.
Here's the original post if you weren't around for those questions and answers. New questions go in the comments below.
Before we start:
- I love Josh McDaniels. I wish he were the coach of the San Diego Chargers. He is by no means an a-hole.
- By all means, let me know what you think of Norv Turner in the comments.
- One of my life goals is to convert CoastalBronco to a full-time Chargers fan. It will happen. You should probably start saying goodbye to him now.
- I may or may not be appearing on JBLoBNaMHR's (John Bena, Leader of Broncos Nation and Mile High Report) podcast tonight. It's really up to him. What do you say John? How does me, you, a bottle of wine and some good conversation sound? Also, perhaps you could move this to the front page so it doesn't get lost again?
- Charlie Whitehurst>Jake Plummer, in terms of football and beard-growing. That is all.
This is a Fan-Created Comment on MileHighReport.com. The opinion here is not necessarily shared by the editorial staff of MHR

Thanks for coming into hostile territory
I’m surprised at the mean spirit exhibited on the last thread — usually the posters here are more reserved with opposing teams’ bloggers. I guess it goes to show the importance of this rivalry.
I don’t have any questions — I’m just ready to see the game.

Not this year, so far anyway. Sorry, but it’s true. Although I’m enjoying the development of Rivers and his WRs, I don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel. Unless they can pull of a miracle akin to the Rivera promotion last year, I fear they’ll be home for the playoffs. I’d love to see a Chargers/Broncos AFC Championship game, though.

He's had much more success than Marty
Since Norv took over as head coach, no other team has more playoff wins without a Super Bowl victory. Also, the team is undefeated in December under Norv.
Turner is basically the anti-Marty Schottenheimer. The team starts weak, in games and the season, and ends strong. Is that preferable to starting strong and ending weak? I think so.

That's quite a qualifier in your statistic...
“…no other team has more playoff wins WITHOUT a Wuper Bowl victory.” Is that a good thing, or a bad thing. And let’s consider the strength of the division over the last few years. Not exactly tough for a decent team to make a playoff run, but I will give credit for playoff wins nonetheless.
Wouldn’t you agree, though, that Marty had less talent to work with than Norv? IMHO, there is a reason SD has been in the spotlight and expected to be in the playoffs for the recent years. Your team is loaded with talent.
by elvisalex on Oct 15, 2009 11:42 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Marty's teams were more talented
If only because they had one of the top 5 RBs of all time in his prime.
Also, I consider it a good thing even though Norv has not won a super bowl. At least it’s better than trying to say “We had the best record in the league but can’t win a playoff game.”

4-3
Hey man, don’t you think you should switch to a 4-3 defense?
(P.S. Did your head just explode?)
Seriously what is with the Hart release right now? I find it odd to be during the second week of your two weeks off. Who do you guys have to fill in?

Yes my head just exploded. I don’t want to talk about the 4-3.
I think the Chargers were shopping for a DT on the trade market for a week before realizing that there were none out there for a decent price. They signed Ian Scott and needed to cut somebody to make room. Cutting Hart makes sense. He makes starter’s money, but has only been on the field for about 10-20% of the plays this season (and it gets less each game). He’s old and there are young kids behind him that cost less and are probably more effective. When your defensive line is falling apart, you can’t really afford to keep 6 safeties on the roster and Hart was the one that everyone would be most willing to part with.

That explains a lot
I kept reading that SD had cut a starting safety and was scratching my head a lot. But if he’s not been on the field much, I guess I can stop scratching.

It kept being described as your starting safety but if other guys were already taking the majority of snaps then you just released a depth guy for another. No big deal.

Here we go
CBs Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie – Cromartie is taller, faster, quicker and has better hands out of these two but Jammer is a much better corner. Quentin is one of the most physical corners in the league, never bites on a fake and generally shuts down every receiver he faces. Although he has hands of stone, he rarely gets thrown on anymore because teams don’t want to waste the opportunity. I’m really not sure why Cromartie’s not better than he is. There are theories he’s trying just for picks, that he’s afraid of contact or that he’s just stupid. I tend to think he needs more film study.
Safeties Eric Weddle and Steve Gregory – Weddle may be the best player on the Chargers defense at this point. He always knows where the play is going and is usually the first one to hit the ball-carrier. He sometimes over-extends himself by trying to make up for the faults of the other players around him, but we can’t blame him for that. Gregory is an average safety in every way. He’s pretty good at coverage, is undersized (not a big hitter) and isn’t what you’d call a “playmaker”. He’s okay.
ILBs Stephen Cooper and Kevin Burnett – I like this pairing a lot, but Burnett (a FA signing) is still growing into the defense. Cooper is a great tackler and is good at man-coverage, but is very weak in zone. Burnett was billed as a “coverage LB” but has proven to be great at just about everything asked of him. Teams love to throw at Cooper in zone, but that’s really the only weakness of this pair.
OLBs Shaun Phillips, Shawne Merriman and Larry English – Merriman is average at best with his bum knee and groin. Phillips is good, but not the amazing pass-rusher he was made out to be two years ago. English is kindof the anti-Phillips. They’re both good pass-rushers, but Phillips is like a DB in coverage whereas English looks like a DT trying to cover. Sometimes their indecisiveness leaves them standing around doing nothing. If Merriman can demand double-teams, this becomes an A+ group.

Marty and Norv?
Has anyone ever a scenario with these two on the same team?
These two coaches seem like quite the opposites in terms of strengths and weaknesses. An opportunity to work together could result in two coaches becoming better than they are now.
by Kwon on Oct 15, 2009 8:28 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Strangely enough
Marty followed Norv as coach of the Redskins and was then fired after one year. That was the same season that Norv was the OC with the Chargers. So it very nearly happened.
Still, wouldn’t want to try it now. Marty and our GM don’t get along, and you’d have too many cooks in the kitchen.

Thanks for coming back John....
Looks like a blackout might be happening in San Diego. At present, still LOTS of tickets left.
One thing that I have always heard regarding San Diego is a huge proportion of fair weather fans. Are you seeing this happen now? Are fans leaving because of what is going on with the team?
I find it INCREDIBLE that San Diego has not sold out a Monday night game yet vs the despised Broncos.
What is your take on fan support at the moment.
Seems great Chargers fans for sure, just interesting.

Fairweather fans
Kindof an odd term for San Diego fans. San Diego, because of it’s great weather, turns into a spot that people move to when they get money. Or a place that people go to for college and stay. So because of that, it’s become a melting pot of fans from all over the country. There use to be an Eagles bar near my apartment in San Diego that proves that point.
Some of these fans of other teams take the approach of “I’ll root for the Chargers as long as they’re not playing my team.” What they don’t say, but what’s implied, is that the Chargers also need to be a good team for them to root for them. So yes, some of the fans that might normally come to the stadium won’t because the team isn’t doing so great at the start of the season.
Also, San Diego has been hit particularly hard by the economic recession. It’s an area where people had a lot of “fake money” that disappeared with the stock market, and where the real estate market spiked and dropped like no other place in the country. The county and the city are flat broke, and many of it’s residents are either struggling to make ends meet or moving away to a less expensive part of the country. That’s not helping ticket sales either.
Anyways, ESPN will end up buying whatever tickets they need to to lift the blackout. With a game that late, in Southern California, they really can’t risk having most of SoCal being blacked out. I’m not too worried about it.
Also, and I shouldn’t be saying this, but games against weaker opponents tend to sell out quicker and easier. Who wants to spend all that money when there’s a good chance you’re going home disappointed?

NFL > ESPN
legally, at least: I think the NFL’s operating contracts between teams are pretty tight, and I can’t imagine a TV company being exempt when the licensing rolled around.
So “you” really CAN blockout a MNF game.
But John is right: ESPN has to scramble to make MNF look like a good deal, although they probably give up a lot more revenue than they would for other programs; they should buy up the tickets.
Wish I could go.

I've got one
I’m overseas so I’ve never seen Norv being interviewed until the other day. I’ve heard a lot of talk in here about him being a bad coach and the main reason for SD not utilising their talent to get them to the Super Bowl. Or indeed struggling to get to the play-offs like this year and last.
When I saw him interviewed, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a football coach hesitate so much in an interview and be generally, well, ineloquent.
My question is, how much of the coaching blame is due to his football knowledge and how much is his inability to motivate his guys to perform to their peak?
What came to mind were my days of studying when I would not study for weeks and then end up doing an all-bloody-nighter before an assignment is due so I didn’t fail. Can this similitude be applied to recent/current Chargers seasons? Is there an obvious lack of motivation/leadership early and was it not until the players realised they were going to fail (miss the play offs) that they kicked it up a gear?

I think any coach that’s the head of a struggling team is going to hesitate with his answers. He wants to make sure he’s not throwing anyone under the bus. I don’t know that I’d call him in-eloquent. On the contrary, I think he’s very intelligent and that comes across when he speaks.
A lot of people do listen to him, take in his body language and believe that he has a very difficult time motivating and leading the team. I couldn’t tell you whether or not that’s true. His voice/body language seems to be the same as any coach who doesn’t like dealing with the media (Belichick comes to mine).
I think the major problems the past few years has been early-season injuries to some of the most important players on the team, and specifically the defense.
I wouldn’t judge a coach based on how he acts in a press conference.

That's fair but
I forgave Josh McDaniels early this season for seeming hesitant, ineloquent, and kind of pointless during pressers (canned answers “r” us)
But after the first win, and getting better each week, he’s now giving real information (carefully not strategic), joking around, sharp on the spot, etc. I find I admire him MORE because he is good in press conference….so I can’t say that a coaches peformance in that spotlight is unworthy of affecting judgment.
I guess it would be very fair to say that winning lends a flattering tint to the spotlight, though. 2-2 is more like those mercury lamps in old basketball gyms that make a light bruise look like leprosy.

We haven't seen how this team reacts to a loss
I think that’s still a big question as to the team’s ability to rebound from adversity.
I hope we don’t get to see that this week!
by Velveeta on Oct 15, 2009 1:48 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope not too
I have tremendous faith in their ability to bounce back, though. Josh McDaniels is the poster-boy for bouncing back against adversity. Especially back in his high school career where his dad was a legendary coach in Canton, OH. Being escorted to school by police, missing the game winning (or tying, can’t remember for sure) kick in one of the biggest high school games, ever… then quarterbacking that same team to defeat that same opponent a few weeks later.
I don’t fear the team facing adversity, I think they’ll be ready. In fact, I fear nothing really this week, but that’s just me of course.

Death threats definitely takes the cake, though. Didn’t he have a sign outside his house or something when he was in high school? That is intense.

Ya, I'm sure there were 'moving signs' if nothing else
That kid went through a lot. When Coach was hired, I was hungry to learn more about him. Very quickly I gained enormous respect for him. Since then, I’ve always thought that if he turns out to be a great coach, his life will likely be made into a movie. With the right characters and additional twists that are yet to come, his is the story of which legends are born. (Not saying he is anywhere near that status today.)

See I've heard that said many times PI but...
… one of the first times I heard McDaniels interviewed was really early, on one of the Denver stations. It was one of his first lengthy interviews – the “talk me off the cliff” interview if anyone recalls. And it was then that I knew JM was someone I’d pull for. I never understood people’s take on him because first time I heard him speak I was sold.
Anyway, it’s not about S.D so I’ll leave it at that.

Hey John
I think Norv is a really great offensive mind, but he seems to lack the overall skill to be an effective HC. Kind of like our Mr. Nolan is on the definsive side.
If the Chargers don’t get it going this year is he gone in your opinion?
by bchiper on Oct 15, 2009 8:53 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Nolan has the ability but was screwed over by the Alex Smith pick. I think Norv has the ability but has been screwed over by injuries mostly. This is Norv’s 3rd year and the 3rd slow start. Here’s why:
Year 1: Players were still loyal to Marty. Wouldn’t buy in.
Year 2: Defense was built around Merriman and he’s gone.
Year 3: Defense was built around Williams and he’s gone.
That’s my opinion anyways. The Chargers are being patient with Norv, but if the Chargers don’t make the playoffs this year they will most likely make a change at HC simply for the sake of making a change and starting fresh. It’ll also be a good excuse to let go of players like LT, that shouldn’t be involved in any “rebuilding” efforts.

Good points
I love your three year breakdown and it makes sense if you look at how it’s played out. I like Norv I just don’t think he has ever been in the right place at the right time as a HC.
BTW I was surprised when Rivera became the DC, it didn’t seem to me as the right fit. And the defense looks and plays different as a result. I know injuries are part of that, but I still wonder if he was right for the DC job.
by bchiper on Oct 15, 2009 9:10 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
He probably wasn't
but you can’t really go with an outside hire mid-season. You need an entire training camp to implement your own defense. Rivera was basically running Cottrell’s defense last season.
The thought process behind the Norv hire was that he’s never been in the right place at the right time (although he had some success with the Redskins). While he’s certainly been good late in the season, he’s had some awful luck in these three years in San Diego.

What’s your take on LT? Is he a shell of his former self, or is he just being plagued by injury? Maybe Both? If he’s gone… what’s the future look like for the RB position?

I went into this extensively in the first Q&A (see the link in this post). I think the answer is both. The guy just has too many miles on his legs to be effective and/or stay healthy.
There is no future at the RB position. Sproles is not the answer and Michael Bennett is older than LT (albeit with significantly less mileage). I think the starter for the Chargers next year will be drafted in the first round.

My guess
just to throw in two-cents, would be a power back or an every down type back. They need a replacement for LT, not Sproles.

I think it’s be something in between. Someone like Moreno, who has some power mixed with speed and good hands.

Adjustments
One of the problems many of us Denver fans had with Shanahan was that he didn’t seem to make adjustments during a game, or even from game to game, to fit the strengths of his personnel. A lot of coaches have their system and try stubbornly to make their players fit.
After reading a small amount about the difficulties San Diego has had on the defensive side of the ball this year, particularly with injuries to some of their better players, do you get the sense that San Diego is trying to redesign their scheme to better suit their replacement players? Or are they trying to do the same things with less talent? As a Broncos fan, I obviously hope it’s the latter.
by hudayberdi on Oct 15, 2009 10:38 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
1. One thing that all Chargers fans know is that ever since Marty took over, and it’s continued with Norv, this team always gets better in the second half. Nobody is really sure why, but the Bolts may be the best team in the league at half-time adjustments. Really, if the Chargers have a lead or are tied at halftime, they cannot lose. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen often enough.
2. They’re trying to redesign the scheme to fit the personnel, but the fact is that these players were meant to be second (and sometimes third) stringers and don’t have the talent to be effective no matter how much you scheme. The Chargers have been playing more 4-3 in the Nickel to try to help out whichever young kid is playing DT. They’re been dropping guys in coverage to try to help with the poor coverage. However, all that does it open up other holes.
So it’s not the answer you’re looking for, but right now it doesn’t look to be one that you should be afraid of.

Your first point perfectly describes this year's Denver team too
Slow start, great 2nd half adjustments. Much more scoring in the 2nd half and only two 3rd-down conversions (I think) all season.
by elvisalex on Oct 15, 2009 12:00 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
To me, a great thing about the current Denver team is how far it’s gone towards proving that if you go into designing a game plan with the strengths of your personnel in mind, you effectively deepen the available talent pool. McBean, Fields, Peterson, Hagan – these are essentially castoffs, first-time starters that struggled to even make rosters elsewhere. But because Nolan has designed a defense around what they do well, as opposed to what they should do well according to some preconceived “system,” they’ve been able to excel. I don’t get the sense that San Diego makes those same kind of adjustments . . . at least not until the second half of the season, when they seem to be able to press some magical button that results in victory over all opponents.
by hudayberdi on Oct 15, 2009 1:37 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
+1 and more
What they do well.
I have bristled this year at talk of a “system” because I don’t think these coaches are “system” guys at all; unless adaptability itself is a “system”
That said, I think you could lose identity and be unfocused without some discipline or target look, but that sure doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Stamina is a Factor
I think a lot of why our team has gotten so much better in the second half is because they seem to be running 100% all the way through the 4th. I think McD and company have put them through some grueling conditioning. Just one more thing that makes you wonder why the MSM didn’t like anything they saw in Dove Valley, I guess conditioning workouts are boring.

Would you have favored a trade for Richard Seymore?
Seems to me (with my very limited knowledge) that he would have been a much better fit on a potentially good San Diego team than on a potentially 1st draft pick Oakland team. Would a 1st round pick 2 years from now be too much to give?
by Dwhite on Oct 15, 2009 7:48 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, I’d love to have Richard Seymour and yes, a 1st rounder is too much for him. The Patriots were planning on cutting him anyways, as he has a hard time staying healthy and has lost some of his effectiveness. I believe he hasn’t done much after that first game with the Raiders.

Since you mentioned coaching changes...
(clever move in the intro by the way; inviting pot shots at poor Mr. Turner: “the cover-up is always worse than the offense” – I think you’ll find a friendlier tone, and LESS vitriol about your coach, just because you did not try to preclude it this time. I hope so anyway: we should be good hosts)
If McDaniels’ meteoric rise continues, I think there could be a massive copycat response next season; everyone 9-7 and worse dumps their head coach and looks for a guy whose primary qualification is being born after 1975? Do you have your eye on any OC’s or DC’s who have not been in the HC ring for a good pumelling yet?
BTW you can’t have Nolan. You’d have to pry him from our cold, dead hands.

The Chargers don’t like unproven head coaches. Mike Riley damn near ran the team into the ground in the short time he was here. Still, an interesting thought…..are there any hot coordinators out there that the Chargers would be willing to hire?
Jason Garrett would probably work. He reminds me of Brian Billick, who I always thought was great. I’d take Sean McDermott from Philly, who reminds me a lot of McD. Paul Pasqualoni will probably get some talk around the league. Greg Manusky has ties back to the Chargers from a few years ago. Let’s rank them in terms of who I’d like the most.
Sean McDermott (McD II)
Jason Garrett
Greg Manusky
Paul Pasqualoni

Depending on the how the Texan's season goes.
There might be a purge of all Texan’s coaching staff (at least a majority).
So you could add Kyle Shanahan to that small list, or even a Kubiac.

Wade Phillips is done in Dallas.
Kubiac is done in Houston.
Now imagine if you will that Shanahan goes to a team next year, like the redskins, and hired Kubiac as his OC, and Wade as his DC.

I’d say because the California coast, particularly San Diego, and Colorado are two of the best places in the country (i.e. the people who like living in one place may also like living in the other). It’s a funny thing… I knew a lot of Californians growing up in Colorado and I run into a lot of Coloradans living in San Diego. Oregonians seem to show up frequently in both places, as well… I guess it could be just the circles I run in.

Qualcomm isn’t good or bad, it’s just horribly outdated and there’s nothing around it except for IKEA. They will get a new stadium in San Diego within the next two seasons or else they’ll move to Los Angeles (technically, to the City of Industry) where a brand new stadium is being built for whichever team wants to offer up part-ownership to the guy building it.
There’s lots of talk lately about the new stadium being built in north county, which seems to be the last available option for the team to stay in San Diego. I see it happening and I bet it’s ready for the 2011 season.

The parking at Qualcomm is atrocious. The lot can’t hold a capacity crowd and fills up by 11a on game day. And who designs a parking lot for 60,000 people with only two exits? Also, it’s a dual purpose stadium since the Padres called it home for a long time, but I never found that to be an issue for football (some seats were pretty far away from the baseball games that were played there).
Other than that, like John said, it’s just old. The atmosphere is good, you just have to make sure you don’t end up at a urinal with a Broncos sticker in it.

Gotta love Jake.
Seriously, when all the media were harping on about his shag, especially in 05 when it was all about QB’s being pretty, I was diggin’ Jake. A man from the mountains.

What a terrific Broncos beard. I’m trying to contribute to the cause as well…

Some questions for John:
1. What are your thoughts on AJ’s “stand pat” offseason? Is this a good description of it?
2. More in depth on question 1, was there any particular player that you coveted this year? Any draft picks in particular? What would you have thought of grabbing Knowshon in the first if Denver had passed him up?
3. Since you are inviting questions on Norv, could you describe the dynamic between Norv and AJ for us? do these guys complement eachother? Conflict? If you have time, could you toss in a comparison to the Marty/AJ dynamic?

1. What are your thoughts on AJ’s "stand pat" offseason? Is this a good description of it?
Yes, and I think he did a B+ job. The Chargers typically don’t sign aging veterans to fill holes (like Dawkins) because it can kill your cap down the line. Burnett was a great signing and the draft was…..good, but not great. I think there was more focus on replacing Merriman than there was finding a replacement for LT, which is silly because I like some of the OLBs that are now riding the pine.
2. More in depth on question 1, was there any particular player that you coveted this year? Any draft picks in particular? What would you have thought of grabbing Knowshon in the first if Denver had passed him up?
Not only did I want Maualuga, I genuinely thought they were going to pick him. He’s turned into everything I thought he would in Cincy. Just a tough-hitter that brings fire to the defense. Besides him I wanted Knowshon or Donald Brown.
3. Since you are inviting questions on Norv, could you describe the dynamic between Norv and AJ for us? do these guys complement eachother? Conflict? If you have time, could you toss in a comparison to the Marty/AJ dynamic?

I never said I didn’t want him. I said the Chargers would have never signed him. I doubt they even looked at him. Personally, I would’ve liked him all along but I knew better than to get my hopes up.

haven't gotten a chance to look thru the first post...
so my apologies if this has already been brought up.
Anyway, I think thus far in the season the Broncos’ O-line has proven to be a huge strong point while the Chargers’ D-line has had little success. Also, the Broncos’ front 7, especially the linebackers, has played remarkably well while the Chargers’ O-line has had some difficulty. Just wondering what kind of role you guys think these matchups will play on Monday. Do you think they’ll have a big impact in the outcome? What do you think Norv and Co. will do in response to these “mis-matches”?

Norv may pray.
It’s what you or I would do looking at those mis-matches from the Charger’s perspective.

Doesn’t the “battle in the trenches” always have a big impact on the outcome of the game? That’s practically where each game is won or lost.
I think the Chargers will throw a lot of quick passes and screens to neutralize Denver’s defensive front 7. I have no idea how they’re planning on getting to Orton without some serious blitzing going on.

forget to mention
The trolley stops at Hazard Center, so you can park there for free and catch the trolley to the stadium. It’s too far to walk.

Sorry this is so late, but I thought I might as well throw it in. Do you think he can be a Jamal Williams level of player in a few years?

Absolutely
The thing that’s surprised me the most is how healthy he’s remained. Often times rookies have a difficult time staying healthy because the hits are much harder and the opposition is much strong and faster. Their bodies just aren’t ready for it. Moving from Canadian college football to the NFL is like jumping ten levels, and he’s taken it all in stride.
He has the size, the work ethic and he’s just a flat-out good kid. He’s one of the best workers on the team and was the day he arrived. With his speed and agility, I don’t think there’s any question that he has potential to turn into Jamal Williams. I expect him to be playing at a level similar to that by 2011 unless he faces some major setback (like a major injury).

Where can I mail my hallmark apology card to Philip Rivers? Turns out he kinda knew what he was talking about with that Cutler fella.
Who knew? I thought he was just being a dick.

You’ll have at least a decade of him being a starter in the league to make it up to him. The next time you hear somebody talking about Rivers being a dick (and it happens a lot), please try to correct them.

He still drives a minivan, specifically because he says SUVs make it harder to buckle your kids in.

Was that propoganda?
Good for him if he does (still drive a minivan). Can’t argue with boydy that his visage invites slappage, but if we’re going to be juging the guy personally, we should take his personality (not just his sports persona) into account.
In Denver we have a distinct fondness for homely QB’s. And a visceral distrust of ones who look too good off the field. I guess Rivers can’t help it…
Hope Doom squishes him, though…. I’m sure you understand.

Yeah, Rivers really does still drive a minivan. After he signed his new deal (that included a huge signing bonus), reporters asked him if he’d upgrade to an SUV or something and he went into a speech about how he loves his mini-van because it’s easy to strap his kids in and he’ll keep the minivan forever.
Also, Rivers married his high-school sweetheart at 19 (they waited until marriage, but didn’t want to wait too long) and has 3-4 kids already (including a future QB named Gunner Rivers). Sporting News did an article last year about how Rivers is a total homebody/family man. Doesn’t go out, doesn’t party. Doesn’t care what he looks like.

Late to the party
I’ve read most of both threads but may have missed this.
It seems to me that a logical way to disrupt SD’s long passing threat is to pressure Rivers. If we can do that with a 4 man rush consistently, Broncos win. My concern is if we have to bring 5 to pressure Rivers how will SD respond.
Questions:
How has SD played against blitzes? Do they do a good job picking it up? Has Rivers been able to take advantage?
I read that Brees has a 115 QB rating against a blitz. Do you think that Rivers is better or worse against a blitz than a base defense?
Neither team has shown an ability to run a clock grinding “4 minute” offense. Is any lead safe in this game?
Sproles returning kicks is probably SD’s most reliable weapon. If Denver squib kicks every kick-off and punts out of bounds each time, do you think “we’re getting good field position” or “damn, we needed 7 points from the kicking game and we’re not going to get it”?

I think Rivers is probably a little better against a base defense, but I think every QB not named Brees is in that same boat. I don’t have the stats though, it’s just an assumption. SD plays great against the blitz because of Rivers though.
He’s similar to Dan Marino or Tom Brady in that he’s not fast, but he never seems to get sacked because he does a great job of feeling the rush. With our offensive line in shambles for most of this season, he’s been jumping around the pocket on seemingly every play to avoid the sack and complete the pass. The one thing I will say is that an effective rush eliminates down-field throws, which is Rivers’ specialty.
Neither team has shown an ability to run a clock grinding "4 minute" offense. Is any lead safe in this game?
It is! If LT is actually healthy, the Chargers will be much better at grinding out the clock. Gates helps to do that in a big way, but a running game needs to be there. Also, SD’s run defense has been so poor that Denver should be able to quite easily run the clock down if they have a late lead.
Sproles returning kicks is probably SD’s most reliable weapon. If Denver squib kicks every kick-off and punts out of bounds each time, do you think "we’re getting good field position" or "damn, we needed 7 points from the kicking game and we’re not going to get it"?
Can I think both? I think I’d go with the good field position, because it helps the offense and the defense. Also, the offense is the strength of the Chargers.
After going over the comments below, it’s obvious that the Broncos fans are overrating Sproles’ value in the offense. He’s averaging just 2.4 yards per carry, so he’s not a real option at running back. He’s a third down running back. Even as a receiver he hasn’t been anything spectacular this season. He’s averaging less than 4 catches per game and 13 yards per reception (which is skewed by a 81 yard screen TD against Oakland). He’s averaging 0.5 TDs per game. In the offense, Darren Sproles is Reggie Bush (except the Chargers never line him up as a WR).
On kick returns, however, he’s a beast. He’s ranks 5th in average KR yardage among players with at least 10 kick returns. 4 of his 18 returns have gone for more than 40 yards. At least once per game is seems Sproles has a huge return that completely shifts the momentum.

Thanks John!
Your post reinforces my gut feel that if we have to blitz to pressure Rivers we’re gonna regret it eventually.
Good point about the SD run defense. I frame these sort of questions by looking at specific situations and figuring out which side I like. e.g. 4th quarter with 5 mins left. One team leads by 2, the other has the ball on their 20. Which team would you rather be? Right now, I’d take the lead and let our defense win the game. If SD had that classic 4 min offense, I might take the ball.
Agreed that Sproles running 25 times is probably not a big threat. I think I’ve worked myself into such a panic over Sproles returning kicks that I’m ready to just squib kick everything.
