Sadaraine's Crystal Ball

We've got great people here posting every week about keys to the upcoming games and some conjecture about what is going to go on.  I'd like to toss my two cents in and make a complete fool of myself for all of you as I'm sure you'll enjoy it come next week.  Some of you may be familiar with my post-game wrap-ups.  I like to give opinions on all three phases of our team and I'll use that sort of slant in this as well.

Star-divide

Keys to the Game from the Broncos Perspective:

Offense (aka...when we have the ball):

  • Mix it up - I don't see McDaniels coming out in a straight-jacket so I doubt this will be a problem.  For the record, I don't think the holes we dig in the first half of games are play-calling related.  I believe they are execution.
  • Exploit the San Diego secondary - Looking at this group, I really have high doubts that they can cover our WRs...if Orton can be semi-accurate in his short and medium throws the game will get ugly.
  • Run Run Run the rock - Again, this defense looks soft to me.  Merriman can run his juiced-up yapper all he wants, but this defense isn't scaring me in the least...I was more worried about Dallas to be honest with you.  If we get the running game going, I really think it will open up the play-action passes...see above.
  • Neckbeard, where art thou? -- Kyle needs to sport the fuzz.  I mean really already...I've seen him growing it out slowly but surely and its time is due.

Defense  (aka when they have the ball):

  • Sack Rivers like a dollar store bagger at the check-out line - After what I would call a lack-luster performance from our D-Line last week (credit to the solid O-Line of NE), we need to chew on Rivers like a dog-toy.  If we don't, I fear we may be holding our breath for many long-balls.
  • Contain Sproles - This kid is lightning in a bottle.  If we don't contain him in the first two levels of defense, he will get some big runs on us due to his quickness.  A run blitz by Dawkins may be just what the doctor ordered to shut this down quickly.

Special Teams (a sort of transitional phase if you will):

  • Contain Sproles - This kid is lightning in a bottle.  If we don't contain him in the first two waves of ST coverage, he will get some big returns on us due to his quickness. (See a trend here?)
  • Find someone who can return the friggin ball - Seriously guys...can we get out to the 30 just a couple times please?

Prediction:             Denver 45            San Diego 10

San Diego is getting a real wake-up call this week.  I honestly think we win big.  Our offense is getting better and better every week and the defense is shutting people down consistently.

Surprise Performance: Lamont Jordan Peyton Hillis

5 runs for 50 yards, 2 TD     3 catches for 40 yards

Yeah, many people would think this would be a line for Hillis, but I don't think he is out of the dog-house yet.  I think Lamont is going to be playing late in the game and making some noise of his own.  (Warning: This prediction is totally out of my lower extremity and I highly doubt it will be accurate...)

Someone pointed out below that Lamont was out a bit and may not play.  In case that is the case, this prediction defaults to Hillis.  (Either way if our 3rd string has a decent game, I look like a genius!)

I agree with execution being the problem with

our slow starts. It’s been something different every week. Penalties, fumbles and “the glove.” I think we are on the brink of fixing these mistakes and the lopsided victories are in the very near future. Great post and Rec’d.

Thanks ninja!

I’m really looking forward to some lopsided victories. I don’t think they will come against some of our stronger opponents, but it would sure be nice to lay the wood on a few of our lesser opponents.

Can’t wait to see this offense start strong out of the gates, when we do, look out. I really hope this week is when it happens.

You don't strike me

as the foolish type sadaraine. We should be able to run the ball effectively, and their DB’s have given our receivers fits lately. If the D takes care of Gates like they did Witten, then Sproles and Vincent Jackson are the only thing left to worry about.

Yeah, but it is good sometimes for an egotist like me to be self-depricating

Gates has me a bit worried, but I think Dawkins and Woodyard can handle him.

I see a breakout game as well.

The Bolts defense is very, very bad. I think that Orton is going to have a very solid day, with up to 200 combined yards of rushing from the rotation.

I feel like a blowout is due. It’s like a storm coming, and it’s gonna happen in front of a national audience.

Of course, then the punditry will then claim that the Chargers weren’t really very good…and on it goes.

by OrangeKnuckleDragger on Oct 15, 2009 8:07 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Or

The punditry will start sending us to the Super Bowl.

And it will matter just at little as when they were calling McDaniels a fool and our team 3-13 at best.

AT least we can be sure Coach won’t give a damn.

You got that right.

I don’t think McD gives a damn either way. Which is why I’m glad that he’s here. Nothing is ever as bad, or as good as it seems.

That press conference where he said

something a lot like “What other people outside of this building, who may not be as educated [about what’s going on in the building] think doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter at all.”

That pissed some people off but was about the most honest statement I’ve ever heard a public figure make.

No he wasn’t dissing the journalism school a guy went to, he was talking about the team; its private meetings, strategy, etc.

Good stuff.

My thoughts on your thoughts…

  • Lamont may not play this week. The DP reports that he is unlikely to play.
  • I’m not concerned about us not having a big return game. Call me conservative, but all I care about is that we don’t fumble, and don’t touch the ball if the other team might get to it. If we fair catch everything I’d be happy. The key (to me) is to contain other teams, and to get what we can.
  • I don’t want to run-blitz Dawkins – for two reasons. 1) Rivers has a deep threat, and we need both safeties back (see the last two years for my point). 2) We need Dawkins in the back because Sproles is deadly at the second level. Dawkins is the only major goalie if Sproles breaks through.
  • Again, call me conservative. I like the clean shaven look better than the neckbeard.
  • Major agreement on running the ball. I think we should jam it down their throats on most plays. It keeps Rivers off the field, takes the crowd out of the game, and wears down the bad guys. (Have you noticed how strong we’ve looked in the second half of games? Well, I don’t think we have. I think that the other teams have just been getting worn down!)

Good stuff my friend, and rec’d!

Depends on if you want accuracy with that

Rivers can throw over his shoulder, while running backwards, for 80 yards…woohoo…right to Champ, Hill, etc.

Fine with us!

Girl...

The issue is in two parts.

1) It takes a while for WRs to get deep down the field. Quick pressure forces the QB to throw before the WRs get in place.

2) And of course, quick pressure also forces mistakes.

Right now, it seems that the Denver defense is based on 3 principles. First, we bring a lot of pressure. Second, we fill the secondary (CBs and SAFs) with top tier talent. And third, the front seven show a five man front, plug all the gaps, and allow the two ILBs to make the tackles.

That pressue involves hitting the gaps, and serves to both pressure the QB AND to fill the gaps against the run. It is a nice double edged sword.

That’s also the reason I don’t see the need to run-blitz Dawkins. He can hang back and do the classic safety job – watching for deep throws (which Rivers likes to do) and break away runs (Sproles / LT).

Totaly!

Appearances

I’ll have to agree with the neckbeard opinion. I think Orton’s wife agrees. She is the last person he wants to upset!

I would like to see a better return game. Our returners have not done much. A lot of the blame has to go to their blockers.

Conditioning at high altitude makes you run all day at sea level. I completely agree that the Broncos will run and run and run.

Thanks HT!

Ick…see there goes my Lamont prediction already!!! …alright..maybe that was the line for Hillis. o_O

We’ll see on Dawkins run-blitzing…I’d just love to see him light up Sproles in the backfield ala Atwater circa mid 90s (Mainly cause with Sproles’ build that would probably put him out of the game knowing how hard Dawkins hits).

Neckbeards of the world unite!!! (Not that I could ever grow one…my splash of native american has banned that as a possibility for me I’m afraid…)

A thought on Dawkins and Lamont.

Dawkins – While I don’t expect him to be assigned much blitzing, his speed and reaction skills are so super-human, that even if he gets deep zone, he may see the play develop and dart to the line. This happens a lot with him. It might appear that he was going to make a tackle at scrimmage or even behind scrimmage, but he in fact was set deep and read the play right away.

I wrote this before, and folks seemed to like it, but it is very true. To evaluate a safety, don’t watch the first move they make, watch the second one. The first move is towards their assignnement (likely a zone), but the second move is towards where they think the play is going.

From there, you can evaluate many things. How quick from move one to move two? Did he choose the right direction? Was there just a second move, or did he have to stutter different directions before committing? Etc.

One thing I’ve noticed about Dawkins is that his moves coincide almost instantly with the QBs handling of the ball. He almost never falls for the “QB’s eyes” or the pump fake, and his moves sometimes occur before the QB commitment. You just can’t coach that level of awareness.

My bigger point is that I don’t expect Dawkins to be put in much RB coverage or run blitzes (run blitz is actualy a mis-nomer). But I DO think his reactions to a handoff are so quick, and his speed is so uncanny, that it will appear that he was commited to the run from the huddle. So it will look like he was assigned to the RB anyway.

Jordan – While the DP reports he likely won’t play, I’m wondering if they got it wrong. It turns out he missed practice for a funeral. Most pro players will make a game if it is 3 or 4 days after a funeral, but we don’t know how close Lamont was to whomever passed.

I’m hoping that Lamont can play, but there are things more important than football. I pray for comfort for Lamont and his family.

Great stuff HT

I dig the lesson. Okay, no “run blitz”. :( But with his super-keen ability to smell out the play, I still expect Wolverine to blow Sproles up near the line of scrimmage at least once or twice.

My prayers are with Lamont and his family as well. Take all the time you need playa. We got your back.

I Like Your Evaluation

…..for the most part, but I’m with HT on not rushing Dawkins. When you have such a smart solid safety, restricting him to stopping a play in the first 2 seconds or not at all is exactly how you give up the TD to a guy like Sproles. I think BDawk just needs to do what he do in the deepfield. Otherwise I think I’m in agreement for the most part; in the spirit of things I’ll wager a guess: 30 DEN 17 SD

You guys and your "smart tough conservative" football

You take the fun all out of it…just one or two big run blitzes by Dawkins….PLEAAAASE!?

The blown-up run against the Pats

I think it was early 4th quarter, by Dawkins, with containment provided by Holliday, I think (please forgive memory lapse if I err)…anyway, it was a thing of beauty.

But the guys are right, it’s like candy: sweet at the moment, but can ruin you over time. A safety is aptly named, and BDawk is up there with the best of them all time.

Not every run play needs to be stopped for -2 yards. We just need to have every three run plays total <10 yards. And this years Broncos can actually do that.

We can be giddy about GOOD football this year,

not just on the edge of our seats for occasional miracles.

That was last year’s Broncos, and this year’s Chargers….. and it doesn’t work.

BTW I stick with my earlier prediction of 44-7, same as the recent Giant’s shelacking of the Raiders, and for much the same reasons.

Maybe now BDawk blitz

But if an outside play goes to Champs side better believe it gets shut down ….. and FAST! Unbelieveable how that guy can read so quickly as to be able to play run stop and pass protection at the same time

Man I'm seeing a lot of really amazing predictions for this game

but I’m sorry — until we actually beat SD in their home, I can’t hand our team a lopsided victory. I do think we can win big, but I think it will be a much lower scoring game for our O — 17-24 points tops — and I just have to give SD credit for showing up in the past few seasons when it’s all on the line, especially when their crowd is into it and feeding their D. They seem like a whole different team in those scenarios. Against our D, I’d give them about the same, 17-20 points. And my sense is that Norv is a much better coach than many give him credit for, especially in the regular season when he is scrapping for playoffs. So although i like our odds, I’ve been burned too many times to think we’re going to roll over them — imho, I’ll be happy if we escape with a road victory.

Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.
