Positive talk on the opposition

Has anyone noticed how much McD and the players talk up the oppositions strengths in interviews? They rarely talk down an opponent or trash talk in advance. My selective memory is struggling to remember an occasion.

They talked up the strengths of every team before every contest including Oakland and the Browns.

I wonder how much of this is by design? Don’t give the opponent any added motivation, and respect your opponent by knowing how dangerous they can be.

And thanks for Horse Tracks NYC

Dilfer ? Its getting to the point where some of these articles are just an embarrasment

Ortons on pace with any of the superbowl winning qb’s of the last 10 years or so except Warners greatest show on turf.

If I would compare him to anyone I would say a much smarter and poised Rich Gannon. Since when are guys with numbers like Ortons just along for the ride and I dont mean to diss Dilfer. The MSM and some Bears fans really are having a hard time dealing with Ortons success.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Orton signed before the season is over to a nice deal 50-60 million . I think that if we commit to Orton that he would certainly be open to signing a very team friendly deal with us.

Maybe

Dilfer was talking about himself in Tampa Bay.

Dilfer wasn't talking about himself

The PFW guy above wrote about Orton in ‘09 being similar to Dilfer in ’00, which isn’t close to being true.

That Charles Robinson is one stupid uneducated writer. If the CBA is not resolved in the offseason and 2010 is played without a salary cap, every NFL team will have TWO franchise tags (not one as in capped years). Even if our front office could not agree to contracts with our FAs, Denver could franchise BM and Orton while sticking a 1st and 3rd tender on Elvis. We can slap high draft pick tenders on Kuper and Scheff as well.

My guess is we try to resign Kuper first and Elvis 2nd to avoid subjecting them to FA. We can franchise tag Orton and BM while/if we attempt to give them new deals.

You’d think Robinson would know about the 2nd franchise tag (in the event there is no salary cap in 2010), but apparently Charles doesn’t know much about the topics he attempts to cover.

Like your commets McG,

but where did the tagline go. Don’t tell us you’re softening up on your opinion of McD. ;-)

I’ve been complimentary of McDaniels coaching for weeks. He is doing a very well. My favorite line was when a writer at the Boston Globe said "Denver picked a ripe fruit from the Patriot’s coaching tree".

But Charles Robinson is an idiot.

Thanks Nyc

Congratulations Cali, you hit the big time!
You are right McGeorge, two is better than one. The good part of an uncapped tear, is that the teams that have had good drafts (like the Broncos), will be in a lot better shape and won’t need to dig deep to stay competitive.

Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks

by KaptainKirk on Oct 16, 2009 9:09 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

With two franchise tags per team, the bad teams like KC won’t even be able to dig deep to sign UFA’s because there won’t be many UFA on the market (esp impact ones).

An uncapped year with two franchise tags benefits the strong and hurts the weak. I think the W-L records in 2010 will look a lot like 2009 season because parity won’t be achieved next offseason based on the uncapped year. Without being able to lure decent FAs, the only way to upgrade talent will be thru the draft.

by McGeorge on Oct 16, 2009 10:17 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

But how often to the very best FAs (ie. those worthy of being franchised) go to the very worst teams and help turn them around?

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 16, 2009 10:22 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Turn them around? I can’t say.

But Albert Hanyesworth has been one of the best D-linemen in the NFL for the last five years and he was just signed as an UFA. A few big fish FAs are usually out there every offseason (but won’t be this offseason).

by McGeorge on Oct 16, 2009 12:20 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, but he signed with an 8-8 team. My point is that the best FAs don’t tend to sign with poor teams, anyway. Teams turn themselves around by drafting well and making smart FA signings, but rarely the biggest signings.

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 16, 2009 12:28 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

True point. +1 for NYC

My guess is this paradigm changes with a new CBA. I don’t think the owners will allow the cap to sky rocket every year as it has this decade. Going forward (2011) I think players will be faced with the option to take top dollar from the bad teams or much less from decent teams because cap space will be limited vs the endless cap expansion we see today.

The current CBA is not working out for the owners; it’s been great for the players. I expect that to change very soon.

by McGeorge on Oct 16, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s also why a lockout in 2011 is a very real possibility. I bet the players are in no rush to give endless concessions to billionaire owners. But that is likely what it will take to sign a new CBA.

by McGeorge on Oct 16, 2009 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, on the (one, single, lonely) plus side, I’d have a lot more free time for half of that year.

calijoe.....where u at?

looks like MHR video works are getting some pub…..awesome. Love to hear Dukes and Clayton and Schlereth have to answer for their stupidity……keep the pressure on calijoe….I recommend a solo video on Dukes that really attacks his knowledge of the game….not personal, but that will be enough to get him riled up

Bye Week Advantage

I did some research and found that a bye week is not that big an advantage:

TEAM WIN V LOSS V TIE
AFC
Baltimore 8 V 5
Buffalo 14 V 6
Cincinnati 4 V 15 V 1
Cleveland 6 V 9
Denver 15 V 5
Houston 2 V 5
Indianapolis 11 V 9
Jacksonville 7 V 7
KansasCity 12 V 8
Miami 12 V 8
NewEngland 11 V 9
N.Y. 11 V 9
Oakland 9 V 11
Pittsburgh 11 V 9
SanDiego 10 V 9
Tennessee 12 V 8
NFC
Arizona 9 V 11
Atlanta 10 V 10
Carolina 6 V 8
Chicago 13 V 7
Dallas 15 V 5
Detroit 9 V 11
Green 11 V 9
Minnesota 16 V 4
NewOrleans 8 V 12
N.Y.Giants 5 V 15
Philadelphia 16 V 4
SanFrancisco 8 V 12
Seattle 5 V 15
St.Louis 11 V 9
TampaBay 8 V 12
Washington 11 V 9

Totals 316 V 285 V 1

Total Games 602

Percent Wins 52%

The formatting is not good as usual, but you can see that Denver historically is very good coming off a bye week. San Diego is about 50% (10 V 9). The league average is 52%. Personally I think the “advantage of a bye week” is a myth since a 52% win ratio is pretty close to the one team wins one team loses every week.

Discounting the bye week, home field advantage is not a myth. Oddsmakers usually give the home team 3 points upfront.

by Endzone on Oct 16, 2009 10:29 AM MDT reply actions   1 recs

But the Dolts are 2-0 after the bye under Norv!!!

So that MUST mean they have a big advantage!

“Who’d they play?” you ask?

Umm, the 1-7 Chefs last year (a one-point victory) and the 3-4 Texans in ’07…

BTW, excellent research EZ!

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 16, 2009 10:43 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

One point that confuses me, though, EZ

The bye started in 1990, right? That makes this year the 20th season of the bye, so teams’ records should total to 19 games, correct? Yet most of the records above (except for the newer franchises) show 20 games played following byes. What am I missing here?

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 16, 2009 1:21 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never mind, EZ

Someone just clued me in – there was one year with two byes.

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 16, 2009 1:30 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gameplanners.

It was always an advantage of a Mike Shanahan team to have a bye but other coaches aren’t able to take advantage of the bte week for some reason.

Thanks for the "Tracks" nyc.

On another note; Knowshon Moreno leads the NFL in rushing through week 5 @ 337 yards. He is on pace for over 1,000 yards for the season and 1,500 all purpose yards. Way to go Moreno, keep it up and ROY is not surmountable. Here’s hoping he has a great game Monday night. Go Broncos!

I remember

hearing Stink say that as I was watching the show that day. I was like WOW are we going to be that bad. We didn’t make any significant pick ups for the D line and a new scheme. But I also remember watching a video of the SUPERBOWL 32 CHAMPS and several of the commentators said that they were a bunch of cast offs as well.

One thing I do know is it doesn’t matter until you strap em up and get on the field. Rod Smith has the attitude I have when it comes to the boyz. Bronco fan thru and thru even in the down times. Never back down from a good conversation and sport the COLORS!!!!!
