Williams deserves more PT

Meet Jack Williams.

2nd year player, 4th round pick from Kent State.  Coming out Williams was, "considered one of the best defensive backs in the MAC and a definite pro prospect...possess great cover ability and was one of the fastest players on the team..earned "Elite Flash" status for prowess in weightlifting, speed and agility.  For more info on Jack Williams check out his bio here: http://www.kentstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=11400&ATCLID=58956ver

See Jack Play.

This is my case for CB Jack Williams to move ahead of Alphonso Smith for the Nickel corner spot and maybe ahead of Goodman as starting corner opposite Champ Bailey.  I have been impressed with what I have seen from Jack Williams this season and in training camp.  When the season started Alphonso Smith was ahead of him on the depth chart and he saw limited action.  He did not see the field much the first two weeks, but he has played more (injury to Alphonso Smith)  the past three weeks.  He has played really well the past three weeks, with a breakout game against the NE Pats.  Williams ended that the game with 8 solo tackles and 2 passes defended.  He looked a lot like Champ Bailey with the tackles that he made last game.  That is high praise because I consider Bailey to be the best tackling corners in the NFL.  As I was watching I caught myself saying, Great tackle Bailey, only to discover that the tackler had number 26 on his back and not 24.  The two passes that he knocked down were both crucial plays, at least one was on a third down as I recall.  A case can be made that Williams is outplaying Goodman, our starting CB.  Goodman through 5 games has 7 tackles, 2 passes defended and 1 interception.  With less playing time Williams has 14 tackles and 3 passes defended.  Alphonso Smith has not been playing bad, in my opinion, I just think right now Williams has an opportunity to become a great player if he is given more playing time and more responsibility.  I would not be surprised if eventually Williams supplants Goodman and becomes the starting CB opposite Champ Bailey.

See Jack play more?

Williams seemed to get more playing time last week against the NE Pats which I expected because of the multiple WR sets that the Patriots like to use.  IMO he has played well enough to at least be starting ahead of Smith for now in the nickel back spot.  I think he could also help our woeful return game.  I would rather see him back there returning punts so we can keep Eddie Royal at WR only.  If Williams continue to progress and Alphonso Smith makes similar strides as Williams in his 2nd year we could have a strong secondary for years to come.   Go Broncos!!

This kid...

Is sick. Sometimes when he was flying around making plays i could have sworn it was Mr. Bailey but, then you see a big ‘Williams’ on the Jersey. Too small to be D.J.

I remember him tearing it up in the Preseason..

A big reason his stats are better

Is because he is playing in the Nickle Corner position. As a number 2 corner, Goodman does not get that many opportunities to get tackles. And with his coverage being nearly as good as Bailey’s, the QB’s have been forced to throw to the slot or checkdown receivers pretty often. That is where the Nickle Corner sees the most action. And Jack has excelled at this spot. While I think Jack is a good Nickle corner, I don’t think he is ready yet to be the #2 Corner, because I don’t think his coverage skills are up to the task yet of going against a number two reciever. He is very good at covering TE’s, and slot receivers, and should get more playing time then Smith this year at that position, but not take over Goodman’s spot.

Just my opinion, and feel free to ignore it. lol

putting him over goodman would disrupt the chemistry of the starting db’s, something I don’t want to do since he and hill have a good thing going

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

My $0.02

I am of the mindset that supplanting a player because one plays better than him at one sampling of time is nuts. For example with Jack’s stats mentioned above he is even challenging Bailey for the #1 Job. Can he handle it ? That remains to be seen but are we gonna call for Bailey to be moved to #2? Not on your life.

Football is a Chemistry not just a skill. The starters are starters not only for their skill set but because they work the best together to create a seamless team. If we go up 49-0 and Simms or Brandstater come in and go 20/20 for 250 yards and 3 TD’s to finish out the second half are you going to call for Orton’s replacement?

The positions need to be set to give the guys playing them the confidence to do their job without worrying about losing the next time they screw up! I think that bye weeks or off seasons are the time to look at these things definately.

now is Jack williams making a case to see more playing time? sure! we could run a Dime package and assign him to the TE or just straight assign him the TE and leave it at that! I like how he is playing in his position and also how everyone else is learning to play their positions!

A Williams tearing up the secondary?

sounds too familiar. I hope JMFW can keep up what he’s been doing, because Darrent would be proud of this team.

I like to think Jack and Alphonso as the future

I like to see them both play great.

Gonsoulin, Taylor, Little, Wright, Gradishar, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...
Why are they not in the Hall...I just don't understand.

He Is Playing Well

but seriously stats for a CB are so misleading. Tackles aren’t very useful or even interceptions. Right now I am watching opposing QBs have time and stand there without anyone to throw to. Bailey and Goodman are doing a heck of a job and we may already have their replacements. No need to change a thing.

Worse than misleading

In most cases, tackles are a bad thing, as they mean your receiver caught the ball. Of course, you also have running plays, and when your receiver does catch the ball you want to tackle them, but I don’t think I would want a corner with 100 tackles.

Alphonso and Jack are gonna be a couple of really good corners
