And our first round draft pick for next year gets a little higher

Thanks go out to the Atlanta Falcons tonight, for playing great defense. A little thanks also goes to Jay Cutler for throwing a few key interceptions (double the interceptions in the red zone compared to the next closest guy in the league over the last 2 years).

Matt Ryan looked really good, and he is so young. I definitely see the comparisons to Peyton Manning, they both have a certain way about them in how they react to the defense, although Peyton is light years ahead of Ryan. It is crazy he is only in his second year.

I expect 8-8 for the Bears. Cutler will lose as many as he wins for the Bears off his canon arm and the average Bears stay average. While we definitely make the playoffs and have a mid 20's pick sent to Seattle, we get a 14-18 pick. I wonder what position we will draft. Go Broncos!

The season is young yet,

I wouldn’t start predicting until around Thanksgiving. The Bears may get a fire under themselves and take off. It will be interesting to watch the 2 Vikings games they play. One will be outside in only who knows what kind of weather (Soldier Field) and the other will be in the Dome. I don’t know yet, will have to wait and see. Now if you want to know what I am hoping, then I’ll say, I hope the Bears totally collapse and win maybe 1 or 2 more then we could get a very good pick (Mays) maybe.

I'm not sure...

We want too high of a pick. We have plenty of boys to think about resigning next year..

No problem-

We can just trade for a handful of 2nd and 3rds. I love depth!

We'll get a good player

anywhere between the 10th and 20th pick so theres some wiggle room for sure. I’m glad we don’t have 2 first rounders next year. We’re not in a rebuilding mode and it would cost too much.

what that would yield

It’s early — of course — so we still have to wait for many contingencies to work themselves out but……………….

Here’s DrafTek’s rankings (and they’re a good source because they project the underclassmen in with the Seniors).

10. – Brandon LaFell, LSU – (WR)
11. – Brandon Spikes, FL – (ILB)
12. – Sean Weatherspoon, MO – (OLB43)
13. – Bryan Bulaga, IA – (OT/OG)
14. – Marvin Austin, NC – (DT43)
15. – Rolando McClain, AL – (ILB)
16. – Eric Berry, TN – (S)
17. – Sam Bradford, OK – (QB)
18. – Trent Williams, OK – (OT)
19. – Arthur Jones, Syracuse – (DT43/34)
20. – Marshwan Gilyard, Cin. – (WR/KR)

I really don’t see a big difference at this point between early in the 1st and later on in terms of ‘useful’ prospects. There are prospects ranked in the 20s who might work as well for us. On the other hand, there are plenty of prospects in the first 10 who wouldn’t be particularly good picks for us. As a result, I’m ambivalent about Chicago’s record, since it doesn’t seem to mean much in terms of improving our upcoming draft.

However, it is fun to note that the pick we traded for Alphonso Smith is currently worth less than than what we offered initially (Chicago’s), and it’s looking like a very good value (i.e. a >25 pick for a player we rated around 20, and without the interest).

I guess you can say that it was really smart to keep Chicago’s 1st pick rather than our own. Not many people would have predicted this (and I know at a personal level because I argued the point many times).

The best part of all this may be that ANY pick from the middle of the 1st round on is useful because there are many prospects in the last half of the 1st that fit our defense. I’m not assuming our pick will be on defense — though. There are some offensive players who could work out better, oddly. I consider Jahvid Best (RB/KR) and Jonathan Dwyer (RB) as worthy of strong consideration. I doubt that anyone would have believed that I would consider taking another RB this year. Don’t worry! There’s a number of defensive players that I like, too.

Here’s another prospect who’ll seem like an odd choice:

Here’s who I would draft (sorry no video yet).

Colinski stepping up huge....

nice work man….I don’t follow college thoroughly so I’m not overly familiar with players other than the basics. I know it’s early but judging by the previous draft McD drafts by best available over reaching for need. I am interested in where you see our needs in the draft? Is it at LB? I’m loving Andra Davis but we would do well to upgrade there, even if you want to keep him for leadership reasons. Another CB? Getting old there. FS/SS age? DT? is Fields good enough of do we need more? QB? WR? C? So many interesting possibilities

an early need analysis

I really don’t see any holes — although that may sound silly.

I’ve focused on DL, LB, DB, OL(interior) and offensive ball handler (WR or RB).

Re: ILB. There’s a few in that 10 – 20 group but I wouldn’t put that much stock in where people are putting the ILBs. It’s a position that’s dropped in value lately, and it’s also a position that can be filled through free agency. I look at the ILB candidates for their ability to play OLB, on either side. We’ve seen a lot of big backer types in recent times so they’re out there, but the skill mix is important.

I’ve been keying in on the DE34s types since the last draft. We’re not in bad shape since we picked up L K Smith & Holliday but there are too many to ignore. Suh is out of reach but Arthur Jones should be one of our top targets. I’ve heard Odrick mentioned but he looks like he’ll fall in-between our 1st and 2nd now. Corey Wooten is another to watch. Another name to think about is Brandon Graham, who’s a late 1st pick now, but the question with him is whether he can play OLB, since he’s Ayers’ size. There’s other possibilities in the early rounds, too.

I’ve also been focusing on players with KR & playmaking ability. That’s partly why Jahvid Best is on my list. Some of the WRs fit this role, such as Marshwan Gilyard. It’s possible that there aren’t any of this type of player available early on. I really don’t know this group very well at this point.

I agree with the people who emphasize our need (eventual replacement) in the interior OL. My thinking is a little different though, since I’m looking more at Guards rather than Centers, but I’d gladly take a good Center. My concern is with having the right type of personnel to play in our new running scheme. Whoever we take, assuming we do, we don’t want to rely on them immediately, so we need to re-sign Kuper (particularly) and Hamilton.

I’ll also mention Eric Berry (SS/FS) again, since he’s exactly the type of player we should want. From what I’ve heard, he’s a playmaking type that we’d take in a second if he fell to us, even though we took two Safeties high in this last draft.

It’s really more about a certain type of player and an overall draft philosophy than filling particular positions. Particular attributes mean more than filling the depth chart. Players who can make an impact in some way, either by having a particular skill or being so versatile that they create match-up problems, are going to be valued.
