Aussie Meanderings: Did our schedule just get a WHOLE lot easier?

Hi Everyone,

Well, what a weekend. Even without our beloved Broncos playing on the weekend proper, it was a great time for us fans to scout some of our up coming opponents and get a real handle on what we have going on in the coming weeks.

Check out some of the observations and get back to me.

Also, keep an eye out on the series that Bronco Bear, KK, BShrout and 91 are bringing out: "Scouting the Opposition" that can be read here. This will be awesome in depth series on all our upcoming games!

  1. Broncos Defense: Anyone check the Patriots game yesterday? Man, how impressive! This puts what our D against the much vaunted Patriots in even GREATER light. We have heard all the stats, but put in laymans terms, we did a hell of a job. Lets also remember though, that the Titan's are decimated in the secondary too. But still, seems like our D has the key thru game planning and adjustments to such teams down. Many pundits are talking of the explosiveness of the Chargers. After yesterdays performance from the Pats, I am willing to bet on our defense in tonights game.
  2. The Powerful NFC East: Umm....about that? Denver has already beaten the Cowboys, and I watched some of the Giants game and most of the Eagles game. As we know, ALL NFC east teams went down HARD on the weekend. Chiefs got there first win against the hapless Redskins, the raiduhs took down the mighty Donovan McNabb and the Giants were smashed by the Saints. A couple of observations from all games: each of these teams has glaring weaknesses in the secondary and are ready to be picked apart. McNabb hates pressure, and he can expect that from our boys. The running games of ALL these teams are resembling paper tigers, with each o line struggling to move and get push on aggressive front sevens. The Giants could be a factor of a soft schedule, the Eagles look better with Kolb behind center and the Redskins have become the raiduhs of the east......I no longer the NFC East and not only should we be in ALL of these games, we should win them, based on what I saw out of these teams.
  3. Baltimore in an offensive juggernaut?: Baltimore's secondary is AVERAGE. When your starter is a 5'9' nickel then you are in for some trouble. (Note: I love Dom Fox, but he is not starting quality corner). They are struggling to stop the run, and are ready to be picked apart in the pass game. If we can get pressure on Flacco and stop Ray Rice, they are ripe for taking.
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers......cant run the ball!: They put up pedestrian numbers in the run game against ....THE BROWNS??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! Big Ben threw for over 400 yards and they have now become a pass first team. Based on this, you have ot wonder how many running yards the Broncos can put on the Chargers tonight based on what Walter Payton did to them last weekend....whats that you say...it was not Payton....oh, it was Rashard Mendenhall......right! KM and Buck could have a field day!
  5. Paging Josh Cribbs....report to Dove Valley.....Josh Cribbs: Look, Eddie Royal has done NOTHING in the return game. He is hesitant, waves off too many kicks, takes fair catches when he has room....he is just playing gun shy, and he is our best threat in the return game. A dynamic returner is what we are missing at the moment, and it could put us over the top. Cribbs took ANOTHER one to the house against the Steelers. Lets give the Browns a 3rd and Brandon Lloyd and call it a wash. Cribbs is big, tough, strong and fast with exceptional vision, and an immediate upgrade for our ST. His acquisition would put us in the Super Bowl conversation. We need better field position when starting drives, and Cribbs would od this for us. XANDERS GO GET IT DONE!
  6. Ist round draft watch: Chicago moved to 3-2 on the season on the back of ill disciplined play by the Bears and 2 interceptions by Jay Cutler. For this season, I am backing against Chicago in every game (which sucks as I really like the Bears) to help with the 2010 draft. Hester looked great and is really improving as a WR, and you can see what a great return game can do to field position. Earl Bennett and Johnny Knox are improving, and showing some talent. Matt Forte....ehhh........same as I though about him last year....a work horse with low yield per carry. Jay....is, well.....Jay. My heart goes out to the Bears fans......they are reliving our nightmare. He will win you games, and lose you games, and thats how he will be. Still love watching him play though, but glad that he is with another team.
  7. The Colts and the Saints are legit!
  8. What has happened to the Titans.....I like Jeff Fisher but they need a change. Just like what happened with the Broncos, or in any sport, a coaches message can get stale after a long tenure unless you are super creative. The loss of Jim Schwartz has killed them
  9. Are the Broncos setting a record for being the only undefeated team that is constantly the underdog in EVERY game. 60% are favoring the Chargers to win!
  10. Did anyone see the Arkansas/ Florida game? I will say this only once.....the officials were NEVER going to let the hogs win that game......NEVER. A phantom pass interference and another personal foul 20 yards from the play (that should have been called against Florida) made sure that Florida scored the game winning touch down. (I know the Hogs had some chances but this changed the complexion of the game) It harks back to what I think HT said: We need full time paid referees and not Billy Bob, good ol' boys as referees.....they are killing the game with stuff like this. Rant over!
  11. My prediction fro tonight: Denver 31 - Chargers 13.
Thanks everyone, and hit me back with comments.
Go BRONCOS!

No, BOYDY!

You had to twist the knife, didn’t you? The SEC’s officiating crews are pretty much abyssmal. Well, I’ll say this: I wouldn’t want to be Houston Nutt or any of the Ole Miss players next week. The Hogs are going to come into Oxford on fire and thirsty for blood. They sacked Tebow 6 times — poor Jevan Sneed is going to have to learn to complete passes from a near-horizontal position. :)

Great post, BTW. If McDaniels can keep our boys prepared mentally every week (no small task, but possible), then we should be able to win ‘em all. I don’t see any insurmountable odds on our schedule anymore. @Indy and @Baltimore are the two that still look hard, to me. Yes, the Ravens are coming apart at the seams, but they still have most of the pieces there for a decent defense, and you never know with a road game. Did you notice that the Giants did so bad against NO that they dropped to #2 (behind some losers from the AFC West, I think) in total defense this week? Wow.

I was rooting for the "HOGS" Saturday.

I think Mallet will be an NFL QB one day and may even be better than a McCoy, Bradford or Tebow. I’ll take and you read it first here. He has the height and size with a great arm that is fairly accurate, and he has good vision of the game. My Boise St boys moved to #4 for the first time ever being ranked that high. I’m hoping they will move them to the MountainWest Division where they can get better games to be tested.

Good stuff again Boydy. Rec'd

I think the Titans are really missing The Schwartz. BIGTIME!!!

My guess is that The Schwartz will have Detroit back in contention in a year or two.

We have Jedi McD and Detroit has The Schwartz.

All you get from drafting the "best player available" is a team full of good football players.

Josh McD to be arrested!

For grand theft Quarterback! I too hate to cheer against the bears. And I still love to watch Jay when he is on – but I am so glad that I am not ‘invested’ in him any longer.

NE ….. WOW, think maybe they were pissed? Needed to kick the dog just a little bit?

Minn … when the winds of fortune are at your back everything just works out

Giants … obviously beatable, but a scary team that requires all bodies to be healthy and bringing their A game – you Know, the one marriedman says he’s bringing tonite.

by Flunkie on Oct 19, 2009 8:18 AM MDT reply actions

NE was definitely pissed.

They got beat by the broncos in OT. Big Bill hates losing, especially to people who were his assistants. Sorry Titans, but this is a little bit the Broncos fault.

Tenn – just awful. I haven’t even talked to my friend Alex (titans fan) in about two months…. for obvious reasons.

Minn – they look strong now, but they have AP, Favre, and Harvin who are ALL injury prone. It’s just a matter of time, now.

Giants – I don’t think I’ve ever seen Eli angry like that before with another teammate. Sure, he gets down on himself, now and again, but he snapped on Bradshaw the other day for missing his assignment.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Meh, I would never call the most durable man to play the position injury prone.

by aLuffabo on Oct 19, 2009 1:41 PM MDT up reply actions

“Injury-prone” may not be the best term, but I do agree with the general opinion of Drizzt: Favre was REALLY starting to wear down in the second half of last year. It remains to be seen if his body will let him keep playing at a high level all season.

Favre had a torn tendon or something in his throwing arm last year

This year, he says he’s fine and is making all the throws (is he ever!). Anyone can get hurt, but Favre has shown an amazing resilience throughout his career, and has shrugged off a few hits this year already. He was actually beautiful yesterday against the Ravens.

Cribbs

I agree Boydy. This guy would turn one of our few weaknesses into a strength. I already think this club is on the verge of becoming a SB team, Cribbs would seal the deal in my mind. The field position we would gain by kickers simply trying to avoid this guy would be huge.

by ButteBronco on Oct 19, 2009 8:30 AM MDT reply actions

I agree on Cribbs, it would be amazing if we could get the guy….

However, I don’t think a 3rd rounder and a player like Lloyd would be near enough to pry him from Cleveland. Cribbs is still young and is obviously their best player. I wouldn’t mind seeing us throw out a #2, Lloyd, and maybe another backup level player for the guy. Pedescleaux or someone like that…

I'm on the record...

…as advocating that the NFL refs get better compensation for the hard work that they do. HOWEVER, I’ve never, ever refered to them in a manner that approaches disrespect. I’m on the record week after week, year after year writing that these guys have the hardest jobs in football, and I don’t blame game results on the work that they do. As for college refs, I quite frankly don’t have the time to watch any college games.

I don’t believe that NFL officials do “make up calls” or try to give any team an advantage. I believe they always call the game in good faith, and I believe that nobody can do a better job than the guys that do it now. When a bad call happens, it is a part of the game and unintentional. I never blame the officials.

BTW, one of the little secrets of the NFL is that each and every game is watched in NYC by a team of NFL administrators, including the head of the officials. They are watching the games as they are played to make sure that any controversy is noted and dealt with after the game. In other words, if something was SO bad that the NFL felt there was a fix going on, they would be on top of it.

So far, there hasn’t been a breech of ethics by officials in a game (a bad call by itself is not a breech), and the League hasn’t had to step in and fire an official. If a call was just a terrible call, the NFL notifies the teams after the game and the officials League wide learn from the error.

Being a ref is a thankless job, and these guys deserve better in terms of full time employment and pay. But I want to be clear that I’ve never felt that the current situation gives us officials that should be disrespected. There are no “Billy Bobs” officiating in the NFL in my opinion, and I hope I’ve been clear in my respect for these guys from day one at MHR.

Whew!

Thanks for clearing that up! I’ve always been the biggest advocate for the officials. My rule was that if a kid disrespected an official, he was disrespecting me and the team (the HC backed me on this). I read the comment to mean that I was saying the officials were “Billy Bob, good ole boys”, so I’m glad you didn’t mean to imply that I would think that.

Even if we lose a game on bad call, I will always have the officials’ backs. In fact (and I know folks will disagree), I don’t believe a team CAN lose a game on a bad call. Teams put themselves in a position to win or lose, reagardless of the weather, the officials, the field, the fans, the other team, etc. WE control our own destiny. Everything else is just an influence.

Thanks for clearing that up Boydy. I wouldn’t want to have to get nervous the next time that a gang of referees follows me into a dark alley.

I also believe the NFL refs are head and shoulders above college refs.....

They have good training programs comparatively to what happens in college ranks.
My post was also about COLLEGE officiating…not NFL…..but that we need full time refs in BOTH games.
No disrespect intended……part of meanderings is to be a little fliipant…and I get being a ref is tough in ANY sport. Most thankless task ever!

They also have bigger guns than college refs. (see Ed Hochuli)

It is definitely difficult being a referee. I was a referee for one summer and I gained a whole new level of respect for them. They get yelled at for ANYTHING. You think fans are the only ones yelling? No way. The players and coaches yell at you if you call anything against them or their team, correct or not. Everyone is passionate and the easiest target for frustration is the referee. That’s just how it is.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by Troy Hufford on Oct 19, 2009 8:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

Calls have to be made in an instant from what is often a less than ideal view point. To error is only human. The Team Owners need good officiating for the game to continue to be a profitable business …. to that end they will not allow obviously biased or incompetent officiating to continue. Heres to the Refs! And to all the college refs that would one day like to be in the NFL.

by Flunkie on Oct 19, 2009 8:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Agree 100% HT

And I am also of the opinion that they need to take replay decisions out of the hands of the coaches and put them solely in the hands of the refs.

It can’t be good for the game when coaches are allowed to challenge referees in the field of play. I think it is similar to letting parents throw a red flag if they think coaches are using their players wrong. Whether it is true or not, it merely serves to create opposing factions, rather than complementary ones… The replay system also doesn’t help with the way fans (at large) view the refs….

Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

by Jeremy Bolander on Oct 19, 2009 2:13 PM MDT up reply actions

My only disagreement might be...

…that the officials (not the coach who requests the replay) make the final call on what happened. They want to get the calls right too.

If it was totaly the refs job (like "in the last two minutes of the game) the game would drag out too long. I like limiting it to two replays. I would also like to see an extra replay added to a team when they win the decision (instead of added for every TWO won decisions).

The nice thing about letting the coaches throw the flag is that it is an outlet for the team (and the fans) to feel that they had a voice in getting the decision made right. The way it used to be, folks blamed the refs and nothing could be done. Now they can blame the coach for not challenging, or using up his challenges.

I actualy like the replay system, and I would guess that the refs like it too. Folks will still blame refs for everything, but it is a lot harder to blame them when the replay system is used (in my opinion).

by Steve Nichols on Oct 19, 2009 2:42 PM MDT up reply actions

NFL challenge system is reasonable

It gives coach a chance to get a wrong call back when official responsible for it does not realize the call was close or did not see something. And since it is limited to 2 challenges, it does not get out of control. To that, I’d add that I’d prefer challenges used for really game-changing situations. With 2 red flags at their disposal, coaches feel they should use those resources – and challenge marginal calls. Recently our own McD challenged 3-yard opponents completion on 2nd down that did not result in 1st down. We got the call reversed to incomplete. Good for the Broncos and good that our coach used available resource to help our team. But from a larger quality of game perspective, I think this is an example of unnecessary challenge. The game would’ve been better off without it.

by si_ice on Oct 19, 2009 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions

I didn't agree with the decision to challenge either...

…but I understand what he was doing. He wanted the time out more that the actual challenge (in my opinion). A timeout for a challenge is going to last longer than a regular time out.

31-13 sounds reasonable to me

I truly think that everyone has missed the boat on this game. I was watching NFL Today with Sharpe and he was the only one to pick the Broncos (he’s still huge on the Broncos which is great to see) and his defense was that SD is terrible at tackling and can’t stop the run. At least he’s looking at current trends, and not going based off of his ‘feelings’ and what happened last year.
“Oh, SD is mad, they’re going to play hard” (uh, shouldn’t they play hard every week?). “Oh, they’ve had two weeks to game plan.” (if Norv wasn’t the coach, I might agree, but he is, so I won’t. :)

On Cribbs, hasn’t the deadline passed? Or is it at midnight tonight? That would be awesome, but I think we’ll have to make due until next year.

But come on folks! We are 5-0 heading to 6-0 and then on to at least home field advantage and hosting the AFC championship game. I am so happy with the turn around on this team that I hardly noticed the poor return game – just too much good to marvel at to notice things like that. In Josh I Trust.

It's possible. If your team is really really good at every position, then every player would get votes to go to the Pro Bowl.

31-13

Honestly, we play offense strong enough to JUST barely win against any decent team this year. This is a good thing, not a shot at Orton. But to me, that means we will see a low scoring game. I picked Denver to beat the speard of 3.5 and I picked the under of 44 points. I don’t see this game hitting 40 points let alone 44. SD will put up a TD and a few FG’s And we will hit 2-3 TD’s I mean, if I was a score guesser (which I am not by nature) I would look at seeing 21-13.

by Troy Hufford on Oct 19, 2009 9:51 AM MDT up reply actions

While I definitely see where you are coming from… here are my thoughts:

We are playing against a pretty weak defensive unit right now. I really feel like we can both run and pass against these guys, I don’t feel like they will have an answer for anything we do against them offensively. And regarding your comment on our offense just doing enough to win so far this season… I think you could see that our best offensive game of the year was last week against a pretty good defense. I think the lightbulb went on for not only KO, but a lot of our offensive players last week in this new system. Things should be even smoother this week. Honestly, I believe our O is getting to the point where they will just pound some teams into the ground for the rest of the season.

Offensively, SD is one-dimensional. This means we can overload (smartly) to stopping the pass and getting after Rivers. This spells disaster for SD.

I’m still worried about the game, obviously anything can happen. But the more I look at the matchups, the more I’m confident that San Dieg-ans (Whales’ Vag#$@&) will be crying into their butterschnapps spiked lattes by the end of this game.

Repeat

Repeating a post from last week “One or both of the next two games (NE, Diego) will be won by the offense and it will happen going deep over the top”. My read is we will pick off a couple of passes, smear Diego’s running game, and play very sound offensivey. I’m also looking for a breakaway or two in our running game.

by BroncoCUbuffs on Oct 19, 2009 11:56 AM MDT up reply actions

I do not disagree

With what you are saying…..but we make mistakes when we are up. We fumble when we are not behind. We make stupid mistakes constantly and leave 7-14 points a game on the field. Which is why I don’t see the two teams putting up 40 points. thats all. I do believe we COULD lose this one, though I don’t really think we will.

Trade Brandon Lloyd and a pick for him and let’s fix our special teams. I don’t blame Royal because he’s not built to be a kick returner and I don’t think we should have him back there risking injury on kickoffs. Returning kicks is an art. Has our schedule become easier? No. Every team is dangerous every week. Some of our previously feared opponents no longer look as fearsome. But that does not mean they are not dangerous.

I agree that a proven return man like Cribbs would be great.

San Diego has started slow and picked up steam, true.

But this isn’t the same SD team. Jamal Williams is out, the secondary looks sketchy, Merriman isn’t doing a thing. I don’t think this is just your average SD slow start…I think they’re starting to implode.

And in the same vein, this isn’t the same Denver team that can’t beat SD. We have NO idea how this team will handle a situation like this, which just adds to my excitement for tonight!

On the NFC East: I still think Philly and NY are very good teams and they will be tough games. I would not call the Giants run game a paper tiger. I do think Jacobs is not the same this year, but Bradshaw is still very good. The Giants did not run as much yesterday because they got so far behind. Anyhow, I like our chances against NY at home, but the toughest one will be @ Philly in Dec.

On the Patriots: Every week is a different week. The Titans got the Patriots at the wrong time. They don’t lose 2 in a row very often if ever! And the Titans pass D was torched by Garrard so I think that game said more about how bad the Titans are than it did about how good Denver was. Don’t get me wrong, Denver’s D is good, but that didn’t make me think they are any better than I already do.

Cribbs Part 1: As I watched the highlight of Cribbs I couldn’t help but think if only Denver had a guy like this… But Cribbs is not going to happen and I wouldn’t dream of it. He almost held out for a new contract this year and I don’t think Denver is going to pay this guy what he would want since he is only on ST. Not with all the guys we have to pay to keep this off-season.

Cribbs Part 2: A 3rd and Lloyd? That would not get it done. Who is going to want our 6th WR? Nobody. You have to give them something that they would want. And they have to want to get rid of the guy and they’ve never indicated they do.

Royal: I think he is a return guy. He needs to get better plain and simple. That’s the reason he was drafted. It’s awesome that he has turned into such a great offensive player, but he originally was drafted to be a return guy. So I disagree that he’s not built for that.

Loved your whole post though (even if I saw a few things slightly different)!

Royal as a returner

I wonder is some of the problem with the return game is that McD puts a huge emphasis on protecting the ball, not taking chances. Whcih would go a ways toward explaining all the fair catches.

Great players play without thinking

which apparently hasn’t come yet for the returners. Royal set the offense deep (on the 2 yd line) last week, which made it a very difficult situation for Kyle and company to pull out of. They did though and the end result was a TD. Royal should have fielded the ball around the 10 even if he calls for a fair catch. ST’s have been a problem all season so far and it has to stop now. Example; Reid roughing the kicker in the end zone? Terrible and the butt chewing that ensued. We would of had great field position at around the 50 yd line instead of giving Brady another chance. The defense survived the error thank goodness.

"Royal set the offense deep (on the 2 yd line) last week, which made it a very difficult situation for Kyle and company to pull out of."

Good point. Royal also made a mistake late in theBengals game by bringing the kickoff out of the end zone after the Bengals scored their TD to take the lead. He only got to the 18, but even worse, he ran time off the clock.

I would say it isn't royal's fault.

those types of decisions are where his mistakes lie, and I can’t help but think that there should be someone putting clear images of the situation in his head before he trots out there to field the kick… like the special teams coach perhaps?

I’m on record with being uncomfotable with the Preifer hiring from the begining, and I just wonder if he was the best available at the time (he was a KC guy who was not missed there). Josh won’t throw him under the bus, but don’t think he isn’t trying to BOTH groom a replacement (Burns maybe?) and having Xanders maintain a file of select guys out there that he felt might be able to take the STs to the next level.

Right now our special teams looks like a unit that is trying to limit mistakes, not make plays. That has its place, but when opportunity knocks, it would be nice to have a unit that knew how to find the darned door…

Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

ST is not improving

Trouble is, I don’t see ST improving from the first games. Honestly, I see it regressing instead – or maybe we’ve been figured out. Our coverage is starting to leak and return continues to be non-existent. I’m very worried about Sproles breaking out a big run tonight, more then I was worried about our coverage all year.

Great Aussie Meanderings boydy and rec'd.

Josh McDaniels saw the ensuing gauntlet and knew he had to fortify the vehicle that would get his team through it. Though the odds are insurmountable they aren’t unbeatable and in fact the wheels are still on and it’s moving along slowly but surely. Yes we will be tested along this route, we may take some hits along the way, but what this team has been through I believe he will take this team to the front steps of glory. Tough, smart teamfirst attitude is a key to success. Let’s have a great game tonight and show the world that mantle has changed hands once again. Go Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain’t.

Now doesn’t look good enough to me.

Agree with you...

the Giants look beatable. I’ve thought that since Dallas ran like wild, and yesterday added more uncertainty about the ability of their defense. I’m sure everyone has an off weak, but that was brutal yesterday; the giants got torched.

I’m mostly scared of Indy.

I recommend large doses of Boydy.

They promote good feelings and improve brain activity.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Broncos Alums

Did anyone else either cringe or grin watching Foxworth (Baltimore) and Paymah (Minnesotta) both get worked over in that game? Particularly Paymah on the touchdown. The announcers were basically saying “this is exactly how NOT to defend this pass”. Made me glad to have our new “old” secondary. But I did have a soft spot for Trevor Price still racking up the sacks.

Eddie Royal hasn’t done anything? Are you watching the game? There aren’t too many guys in the league that can take back a KO and a PR in the same game.

Royal

I said before the game that I just thought Royal needed to play better. That I thought he was built for the return game. I just wanted to stop by and pat myself on the back :).

Really it was a great showing. I think as we move along we continue to improve in all areas. The return game has taken a while, but obviously there was a lot of progress and the Chargers coverage units are not bad. This gives me hope for the short yardage situations. Plus when we come back from the bye we may have Larsen back. I wonder how that will impact the short yardage situations.
