Game notes from an East Coast Bronco
WHAT A GAME! WHAT A TEAM! Sure does feel good to be a Denver fan right now, huh? It's late, I'm physically exhausted from all the tension and the hollering and jumping but there is NO WAY I am going to sleep right now so I'll just throw out some things I noticed during the game in hopes of generating some discussions as I LOVE the intelligent ideas that get born daily here at MHR. I'll start with the other sideline first and save the best (Denver) for last.
Some things I noticed about San Diego;
1) I have felt for awhile now that the Bolts are a rather pompous and arrogant team. You will find this very often in individuals who have amazing natural gifts. They take things for granted and rely on their gifts to pull them out at the last moment. You can see this in all walks of life. There is just alot of people like this. San Diego is a TEAM of these types. 3 years of starting out slow in the season then turning it on when they finally have to finally has caught up to them. The only real reason they have been so successful (IMHO) has been the weakness of the AFC West. Those days are gone and San Diego just had a rude awakening to that fact. Make no mistake, they are not out of the playoff hunt, but I believe it will take several years at best before they really stand a chance of reclaiming the AFC West. Again, just my opinion.
2) Cromartie saved his job tonight. I heard that they had considered benching him for Cason during their bye week. Well I guess he didn't like that idea. He played a GREAT game. He gave MAX effort from what I could see. He seemed to always be around the ball, he had several pass break-ups and he made quite a few important 1-on1 tackles. If I recall correctly there were also two plays where the Denver receivers made good plays to break-up what surely would have been Cromartie INTs. Good game for Cromartie.
3) Norv Turner. Aaahhh, Norv. Your team had REALLY better put the pedal to the metal for the rest of the season for you to come back next season. And even then I doubt you will be back. I will say however that I feel there is just NO WAY Norv gets axed during this season. I have already heard the rumblings, but I just don't see this happening. First off, SD is still very much in the playoff hunt and you can believe those players are going to be playing their best for the rest of the season. Second, there are a lot of good/great coaches who will be available next year. The list includes Shanny, Holmgren, Cowher, and probably Gruden. There will also be coordinators who will get offers including, I'm sure, Mike Nolan. One of these guys will be coaching in SD next year. My money would be on Holmgren.
4) San Diego's O-Line is in miserable shape. The only time I saw them opening gaps was on passing plays and instead of LT darting through the holes it was the Denver D. Terrible performance by them.
5) I don't care what Rivers' persona may be off the field (douche?), the kid can play football. When he drops back I get nervous. But even his skills couldn't hold up to the pressure Denver brought down on him tonight. Hell, Manning wouldn't have been able to do much with that. I'm sure that someone will post the numbers of hurries/hits/sacks here in the next 24 hours, all I know was it was A LOT!
6) Speaking of Rivers, that little pregame "beautiful mind" segment was such a load of self-serving BS I almost threw-up in my mouth. I mean, c'mon! The guy is standing in a glass box with dry-erase marker all over the glass pretending to be calling out pre-snap reads. That was stupid. It was acting. It was Hollywood. It goes right back to my "pompous" comment in my first point. Can you EVER see Orton doing that? Hell no! And that's why we love him, "Neckbeard of Victory" and all.
7) I don't know about you, but when I saw San Diego players come up to our team during warm-ups and basically try to start a fight, I got REAL happy. To me that didn't speak of confidence and swagger. That spoke of fear and lack of discipline. I KNEW B-Dawk and the boys would use that. Our problem has often been that we come into a game thinking too much and too amped up and we have to get settled in. I had a feeling that display of vulgarity by the Dolts would help Denver immediatly get into the zone and show their confidence and discipline. Dumb Dolts.
Now The Goods: Our Denver Broncos!
1) 6-0!!! Nothing else really needs to be said, but I'll say it anyways cause I'm still amped and want to talk.
2) Our O-Line is the best in the NFL. Period. I'm sure during these next two weeks stats will be posted to prove this point but I think we can all see it already. Orton had all day to let his receivers get open. Clady gave up another sack. That's 2 in 2 games and it's good to know that he is, in fact, a human being and not a genetically altered science experiment gone horribly right. I believe that now officially will make 2.5 sacks in 22 games. WOW ! Our big boys up front were making holes, firing out into the second level of the Defense, pulling, blocking, flippin pancakes like they worked at IHOP, anything and everything you could want an O-Line to do. I mean, did Merriman actually play in tonight's game? I saw him in warm-ups. I saw him pushing and talkin smack during the "scuffle", I saw him takin his helmet off on the sidelines, but when the ball was snapped he was like Houdini. Just dissapeared. Oh, wait, he was that powder blue shape wrapped up in Clady's man-hands all night. That's right.
3)Is there anyone alive who still thinks Orton is a bad QB? Or even just a mediocre QB? Noodle armed QB? The guy was throwin darts all night. He was putting the ball in tight spaces. The few times I saw him "miss" a throw, he put the ball in the only place it could go and the receiver was just unable to make the play. Kyle was makin smart reads, playin safe when there was nothing available, and just playing truely solid football. Kyle will be our signal-caller for years to come. Count on that. And he is only 26!
4) My god! The half-time adjustments on this team are just absolutely awe-inspiring. I got to watch the game with my Mom tonight (She got me into football when I was 5) and I kept telling her through-out the first quarter "Relax. We only get better as the game goes on. Watch what happens after we make our second half adjustments." Know what happened? Domination. I don't have any stats in-front of me but if I remember correctly we gave up 1 third down conversion in the second half. And that was on a PI call. 1!!!! And that was 1 more then we gave up the prior 2 games before this! UN-F'ing-REAL!
5) This defense gets it done. They knew that SD is a vertical passing team. They don't dink and dunk. They go big. So how do you stop that? You don't give the QB time to make those big plays. And Denver brought the heat. Career high 5 sacks for Rivers. During one of their last 3-and-outs Rivers picked himself up off the ground (yet again), looked around for a second like "WTF?", and then just walked off the field smiling. There was nothing else he could do. That kind of pressure is insurmountable.
6) After getting his butt vigourously chewed out last week during the NE game, Mike Priefer brought his A-game this week. Did the special teams make mistakes? Absolutely. Did Prater's kick-offs suck almost all night? Absolutely. Did the return game suck like it has been all season? HELL NO!
7) Game-changing performance by a WR who didn't catch one pass. Outstanding job Royal! I am a BIG fan of Royal's and I love seeing him have success. Something about him just says he deserves it.
8) Speaking of which, did you see the clip of McD talking to Royal after that first return TD? McD is in Royal's ear. Royal looks very serious as if he is getting play information. Then his mouth opens up into that extremely warm, genuine smile and you can see the pride swell in his eyes. It reminds me of the look my daughter gets when she has been trying something for awhile and has been continually failing, then she gets it right and I tell her what a great job she has done. Same look. And this team is chalked-full of that kind of genuine desire to be great. Really just makes you feel good about rooting for this team.
9) Anyone catch that smashing block BMarsh threw on that short-gain screen? I don't know who he hit, but whoever it was is gonne be S O R E tomorrow. Did you also catch the next SD defender right after that grab Marshall's leg as he was falling and twist it? Maybe it was just me, and I don't want to accuse anyone of dirty play, but that looked like an intentional attempt to hurt Brandon. Brandon was slow to get up after that. It was also the same ankle that he was limping on earlier in the game. I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin....
10) Great game by Sheff! GREAT catch for the TD. What a match-up nightmare that guy is for opposing Defenses. You already have to game plan for Marshall, Royal, Stokely, Moreno, Graham and others. Then you throw in this 6'5", 255 lb beast who gets off the line in a hurry, runs exceptionally fact for a man of his size and has hands of gold. What can you do against that?
I could go on and on and on. There was just so many great plays, both individually and as a team. So many great stories! That's one of the best things about this team this year in my mind. So many great stories of overcoming difficulty, of dedication, desire, the will to succeed. I LOVE THIS TEAM!
I look forward to hearing your comments and reading your posts. And just a quick thank you to Guru and Co. for creating and maintaining the best fan site in all of sports. Excellent job!
So many great stories...

great synopsis
I have a hard time giving Clady the sack. He had run his man past Orton, but Orton slid into the DE. Clady played great on the play, he didn’t get beat.

Agreed.
Also on that play Orton had the out to the RB who was in the flat and he didn’t pull the trigger. Not really Clady’s fault, which makes him even more impressive.

My pleasure!
I enjoy writing and LOVED the game. I gotta say, I really thought I saw several plays where SD guys seemed to intentionally hurt our players. It’s really just a shame and it goes back to that pompousness and arrogance combined with fear and lack of discipline.

I saw the same thing
In fact if you watch the replay of Stokes’ TD, Cromartie is taking a step after touching him, and it looked to me like he pulled up, and planted his foot on Stokes’ shin. Recently I’ve started hating SD fans and players more so than Raiders. Who’d a thunk it?
by RaRaDonk89 on Oct 20, 2009 11:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Cromartie DID intentionally step on Stokes’ shin on the TD
Also, B Marsh did have more than one SD a**h*le try to twist up his ankle
And there was one play where a SD player tried to undercut Clady from behind in the 2nd half.
And I REALLY agree on the pre game “fight”. When I saw the video on TV I knew right then and there it was going to be a fired up Broncos squad out there.
Lastly, I love the throwback uni’s. They are just plain intimidating in their plainness. No flash, just stomp their head and take no numbers football. Just like the ’09 Broncos, no flash, just wins.

"Merriman eats nails for breakfast"
was the statement made by Jaworski during the second half. My immediate thought was that he eats steroids for breakfast. Never was it brought up last night that he really hasn’t been the same player since he stopped taking the juice, which was before he hurt his knee. His stat line last night – 3 tackles 1 unassisted. I absolutely loved that play in the 4th when the Broncos ran off RT and Bmarsh set the edge of this unstoppable nail-eating former defensive player of the year allowing Moreno to gain 10.

BMarsh was a blocking MACHINE last night.
He played a really well rounded game and more and more it becomes a privilege to have him on our team. Now if he can just control him self and not kick balls around….

Yeah, that was a sick block on Shaun Philips.
If Marshall hadn’t kicked the ball, we’re looking at a first down inside the redzone instead of a third and long that wasn’t converted. Also, the play where knowshon spiked it at Merriman really set us back too. If not for those penalties, we may be looking at 10 or 14 points instead of three.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Yup, he drilled Phillips – never saw it coming.
He put out a lot of effort tonight. Too much emotion, surely, but that kid is an asset when he’s on the field.

Would have be a de-cleater

Correct me if I'm wrong HT
But it seemed to me that he came over and started pulling his guys away, and then turned around and started shoving and yelling.
I just dunno. Without tape to show the whole “scuffle” there’s really just no way to say exactly what happened and who started it. It just seemed like, from what I saw, that SD were the aggressors and it lacked class.

What they do in the second half is unreal. I would REALLY love to see some of the stat guys around here pull up info to see if this kind of second half domination has ever been done before by any of the great defenses through-out history. I mean, 3 first downs in 4 second half’s!? That’s RIDICULOUS!

Nice write up ECB
Just a couple of points that drove me crazy (and I state up front that this is nit-picking – they won!). I like Orton, but sometimes he drives me nuts with how conservative he is. He’s got that clock going in his head no matter how many they rush and if he’d show a little more patience before throwing it away, I’m thinking we’re even better off (of course, the flip side might be more picks, so I should just learn to live with it). You cannot give up punt returns for touchdowns against good teams and expect to win – but we did anyway (thanks EddieR!). Some lack of discipline from both BM and Knowshon last night – can’t have that! Nolan’s blitz packages are just awesome – I don’t think he ever does it the same way twice in the same game. What’s with Prater – did he pull something and they’re just keeping it quiet or what? This offense has so many weapons that I’m not sure how any D. coordinator can truly game plan this team – and of course, that’s the point. I still like CBuck right now more than Knowshon – he just finds the seam better. Get healthy fast Mr Dawkins! Great game – fun year! Go Broncs!

agreed, it seemed like the longer he stayed in the pocket, the more he danced around.
I think every once in a while, McD needs to remind him that he’s got the best offensive line in football. The only time Orton ever needs to rush the throw or get out of there is if they are bringing a blitz. If the O line sees that there are 4 or even 3 rushers, Orton can stand in the pocket all day long. He can make a sandwich, pick his nose, count his girlfriends in the stands and then throw the ball if he wants to.
That Clady sack for instance. Orton was in the pocket, looking upfield and then got antsy and tried to run it out of the left side of the pocket. The defender saw it and came back down the field and got him. Clady can’t help you if you’re leaving his protection.
Orton needs to just chill. Somebody get that dude a lounge chair and a lemonade so he can relax a little bit back there in the pocket. That chicago internal clock he has can be turned off. He doesn’t need one.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

FWIW
It seems like Orton has taken a few more chances every week. Both his touchdowns last night were balls I am not sure he throws in week one. And getting the glove off….he really seems more confident.

The difference in the force put behind his passes since the glove has come off is clearly noticeable, as is his decisions to take more calculated risks then prior games. Good points.

Great points, all of them Donkhead! If I may...
1) Orton – There was twice last night that I can remember off the top of my head where his first read progression came up empty. He scooted outside the pocket then threw it to the benches. Both times I thought “Orton, there really wasn’t any pressure on you, why not take another 2 seconds? Or even run it for a few yards?” So I hear you there. But those were both in the first half. The second half he didn’t throw it away. He just kept going thru his progressions till he found someone open. Half-time adjustment?
2) Make no mistake, special teams are still our area of biggest weakness. Prater had a “noodle-leg” last night. Every kick was around the 10 yard line. That’s a recipe for big returns. And our coverage was average in my opinion. There were quite a few arm tackles that saved us from being burned. Only once do I remember our coverage looking dominant. I guarantee there will be a lot of focus payed to special teams over the bye.
3) Our weapons on O – Hell yeah we do! And I love every second of it. I almost feel bad for opposing D. Coordinators. Almost…
4) Buck – I agree whole heartedly. I like Knowshon a lot. He will undoubtedly be a great asset to us for years to come. But right now Buck is better. He hits holes with speed and authority. He gets to the seems like electricity surging through copper. He just doesn’t second guess. Ever. And when he gets to the second level he almost always makes someone pay for tackling him. Great stuff.
Thanks Donkhead!! Keep ’em comin!

Buck v. Moreno
Is that a Supreme Court case?
Anyway, I like the 1-2 of Moreno and Buckhalter. Moreno runs so hard and picks up lots of yards with second effort. Buck does a much better job of finding and exploiting the seams. I’m glad to have them both healthy again.

Don't get me wrong
I really like Knowshon, but he appears to be struggling a bit, particularly in runs up the 1 or 2 gap. He’s been much more grinder than slasher to this point – I’m looking forward to his combo package one of these days. I’m not convinced that Buck was completely healthy last night, but the bye should help that along – thanks for the feedback!

Rivers
I guess I don’t have much hate for Rivers, aside from him being a talented quarterback for a division rival.
I think a lot of his talk is just his way of getting his competitive juices flowing, which serves him well. I hated watching Cutler trying to match him with the trash talk, Cutler really wasn’t very good at it.

You have to give Rivers credit for standing in there. During the first half, it could have been a lot worse. He had Broncos clawing at his jersey at least 5 times and he scrambled away and made a few plays. Then his Oline completely crumbled in the second half. He’s a solid quarterback. Hard to bring down. Too bad he plays for our enemy!!

100% agree
I have a lot of respect for Rivers the QB. He stays in the pocket until his guy is open. period. Completely unafraid of taking the hits. And it’s not like he hasn’t been injured before. He surely has. And he played then as well. He is a tough, tough competitor who can make any throw. He is definitely in the top 5 of QBs in the league right now.
Now Rivers the guy in the glass box, surrounded by dry-erase marker, calling out fake presnap reads? Yeah, that guy? Not a big fan of. It would have been much more entertaining if he started doing the “trapped in an invisible box” mime routine. Now THAT would have been worth watching.

Glass box guy...edit
Here’s how it should have gone:
About 10 seconds into his “beautiful mind” routine, the camera starts shaking (think stampede) and Rivers starts screaming “92!! 92!!”. He freaks out, trying to escape his glass prison, but he can’t! He’s trapped! “NOOO!!! 92!!” He madly claws at the slippery glass walls, smearing his grease pennings. Then DOOM flies in from stage right and blows thru the glass walls and takes out Rivers in a violent explosion of glass and fear!
Rivers is pulverized (explodes) into tiny pieces just like the glass!
Then DOOM turns to the camera, big smile on his face, and says with authority, “Doom, 92. Hey, can we get a broom in here?”

Cheap plays....
During the controversial Stokely catch, Cromartie first touched him and then stomped on his ankle/shin area for good measure. And then during the replay session, people got to see that lack of class from multiple angles.
I didn’t see that as any kind of accident either.
Anyone else catch that?

Third and 1
What is the deal with 3rd and 1? Someone else posted, and I agree, that I’d rather it was 3rd and 3…we can’t pick up that yard. Something different needs to happen there. Knowshon doesn’t seem able to pick that up. I wouldn’t mind seeing Hillis get another chance. Or just start passing on that down and distance.

That reminds me of a story I heard
Eric Douglas, the lesser known of Kirk’s sons, was doing comedy in London, and it was not going well. At one point the whole crowd was heckling him. He yelled out “You can’t treat me like this, I’m Kirk Douglas’s son!”
Someone stands up in the back, “No, I am Kirk Douglas’s son.”
Someone else: “I am Kirk Douglas’s son”
“no, I am Kirk Douglas’s son”

Crazy how you can write an entire (really good, btw) post on notes from the game, and not even mention a man who had 2 sacks and a forced fumble. It speaks to how deep our team is, and how many different players step up every week, that Doom, with a hell of a game, is not even one of the top stories.
by sleepydog on Oct 20, 2009 1:12 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
haha! A great point and one that completely escaped me!
Doom is the NFL’s #1 sack leader by a considerable margin (I believe he has 20% more sacks then the #2, Odom, who is now hurt and gone for the season). This is a huge accomplishment and I didn’t even mention it and it is exactly as you say, a testament to the amazing “goings-on” with this team. Thank you for pointing that out, and thank you for the compliment.

Team Sacks
Broncos are also tied for the NFL lead in Team Sacks, with 21 (tied with Vikings). Pretty sweet!!

Also, Holliday
Second fumble recovery in two games. If the ball hits the ground Holliday will recover.

Well, let's be honest with ourselves there...
In the replay you see the ball go on the ground. One of our LBs (Haggan I think) starts to go down for it. Meanwhile Holliday is being blocked right out of his cleats. He is up in the air and kind of just falls right where the ball was. He will get credit for the FR, but honestly it was happen-stance from what I could see. We would have still gotten the FR because the LB (Haggan?) and another Bronco where chasin the ball, but Holliday just kind of fell on it.

Moving back to the east coast this year, I really miss those 5:30 pacific kick off times. I was so pumped after the game I couldn’t go to sleep until 1am. That felt like a playoff game last night and I love the way our team played. Even if they had lost (I really thought Rivers was going to drive them down the field when we were up by 4 late), they would have left it all on the field. Unlike the last few years when the team quit in several games, I don’t think this team wold ever quit on a game.
Orton throws it away, I don’t mind him doing that, sometimes it’s the best play you can make.

Watching all those kickoffs land around the 10 yard line, I was left wondering if we are starting to see Prater’s leg fade for a 2nd consecutive season. His kickoffs where short last week as well.

I’ve been one of the biggest defenders of Prater up until now. Same thing I noticed last night, His leg is already fading at week 5-6? He had a whole offseason to work on conditioning, he knew it happened last year. I don’t know now. We might need to draft someone in the late rounds (prefer to not spend a pick, but we might need to), but I dont see him as the answer at K.

"Watch what happens after we make our second half adjustments."
That is exactly what I kept saying to the guy next to me at the game. Reminds me of USC and Pete Carroll.

All during the first half
When Denver kept answering SD’s scores I just knew the second half would not be pretty. Well, if you were a SD fan it would not be pretty. Personally I thought it was First Love Beautiful.
On a funny note, my wife would not even come into the room from one hour before the game on because I was so fired up for the game.

Yup.
I was hollering and screaming and fist pumpin! I was yellin at the refs, chastising SD, booing when I saw unsportsmanlike conduct, you name it.
It was definitely a loud one! That’s for sure.

I agree with the concerns about Prater
Remember how deeply he kicked in the first few games. And, as stated, he faded big time down the stretch last year. I have always felt you can deal with a little less than perfect accuracy if your kicker pounds the ball deep on kick offs and has the leg to attempt long field goals. Since his leg seems to be fading, it just makes me re-think whether he’s the guy or not.

Prater
I’m kind of wondering whether he’s completely healthy as the fall off was very sudden – fine for Dallas but much shorter for both NE and SD. There’s no way this staff is going to say anything, so all we can do is speculate.

nice
I love your first paragraph about the narcissist Chargers and how admiring their own reflection prevents them from being as good as they (and other morons in the media) think they are. Of course this self-congratulatory bullshit comes without ever having accomplished anything and having their greatest stretch of “success” when the AFC West is down.
One itty bitty beef I have is Shef shouldn’t be #10 in your observations! Damn did he bring it — and on a day when marshall is relatively quiet and royal is too winded to catch the ball after running TDs back all night!
But I enjoyed your observations!
