Darcel McBath - gotta love him!!
I just want to praise the play of Darcel McBath. I think he has a bright future ahead of him and it certainly doesn't hurt learning in a defensive backfield with consumate pros like Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey.
In watching the games week in and week out, McBath is in on almost every special teams tackle. As an informed football viewer knows, special teams can often determine the fate of games, and McBath is out there every week making sure that 25 yard kickoff return isn't a 45 yard kickoff return. I also thought he did a great job standing in for Brian Dawkins when he tweaked his hamstring in the first half of the San Diego game tonight. I look forward to seeing him progress and eventually making great plays in our secondary for years to come.

Darcel McBath-Time!
Just a quick note to echo your post. McBath has certainly looked good when called upon, and as you say, the HOFers around him will serve as a great apprenticeship. I must admit when I saw the Broncs call his name in April, it was Darcel who, and I ridiculed the choice with a juvenile remark about his name. I was rightly scolded by BShrout, who pointed out that here we now have a guy who was used to marking up a certain Michael Crabtree in Texas Tech practices. It was a good point which wasn’t lost on me. Now it seems like for opponents, it can be McBath-time for those opponents who dare to cross his path….
Nice post recognising the importance of special teams and backups. Certainly both crucial in last night’s win. Go Broncs!!

I thought McBath played well also.
He seemed to support the run very well. I wish I had coaches tape (and a coach to explain it to me :) ) so I could see what he looked like in coverage.

Totally agreed. Love the McBath pick...
Just a quick question since I didnt get to watch the game…did Dawkins get injured?

looked like a cramping, pulled or strained hammie
while accellerating towards the middle of the field to close up in late coverage on a play. No one touched him, and the play was pretty much over, he pulled up and his hand went straight to the upper hamstring, and he went straight out of the game and was seen getting stretched ont he sideline. he was a cheerleader for a little while and on our opening defense int eh second half he was out there again.

Yep - he made the last block on that kick-off return TD
It was a good hit while Royal slid inside. Good job for sure.
And I’m not sure if Royal was slowing down – I’m sure he was but did you see Bruton running him down on that same return??! That was impressive too.

I think Bruton has great speed, too
I don’t remember his clocked 40 time, but he’s a great raw athlete. I think that’s why they were high on him — well, that and his impressive ST production at ND.

I think you're right BB
I seem to recall 4.40. Which for a guy his size is impressive!

He seemed to be the only guy even close to Eddie on both returns..
.. and on one he looked faster than Eddie.. Both McBath and Bruton get a hat tip for this game.. great job.. Ayers is starting to take of a little as well. Hopefully Smith can come back to his form from game 1 and McKinley can just keep learning from Gaffney and Stokes..
Wonder how Chris Baker and E-Ped are doing??
And Knowshon.. he is going to be one of my favourite players on this team for a long time! Love his running style and his attitude!
Over all great draft class! Well done all involved!

Pretty insane huh?
Having a home grown team is going to feel great as the mature. Apart from Moreno, even though these guys are looking great – we still don’t need to rely on them.
We’re slowly building an expectation of continually drafting well. Even the 2007 class isn’t too bad. 3 of the 4 picks are still on the roster.
So since 2006, it appears so far that we’ve had 3 great drafts and 1 so-so. We’re already discussing what it will be like to have to re-sign the 2006 class. There’ll be three classes after that to deal with too. It’s a nice problem to have. I wonder how much long term consideration is given to the fact that even if you can’t retain your draft picks, you’ll get compensation picks if they finally have to go. Draft success becomes perpetual. It’s just another dimension of these great drafts we’re having!

And another thing...
The game was on at 8:30 am here so I was working and couldn’t watch. I’ve seen the highlights
I followed the NFL.com thing so it was really just a game of stats for me unfortunately. On a pure stats viewpoint, Moreno appear to have his worst game. Do the stats tell the story? How did he look?

Didn't get to see the second half either.. had to work this morning..
went to bed at at 3am (UK time).. was about as late as I could and not injure myself at work today..
Only 44 yards so not that great but i think the Chargers where well prepared for our running game. They are very used to our ZB scheme which could be one reason for that.
He might not have had a great game but you can tell he will have them and is going to be very entertaining to watch when he has them!

One thing I've noticed
Is that “generally” from the games I’ve seen, he seems to get pretty consistent yards. His stats aren’t padded with many long runs yet.
I do pull for him though. Loved some of the ads and promos with him hamming it up. Hard not to cheer for him.

was shut down. Sure we got 101 yards but 3.1 pc!?

except for spiking the ball at Merriman and getting flagged, he had a great game.

Didn’t Barrett get some playing time today too? I thought I saw him on that 1st half goal line stand.

I saw him in press coverage on Gates in the 2nd half
I think it was the second half. That could be part of why Gates didn’t get much going in the second half. Anybody else see him?

he gets some of the heavy run stopping formations where they want to keep an additional coverage guy just in case
but the time he saw today I am 99% sure was replacing Jack Williams who came out with a shoulder injury of unknown severity.

Does this mean that Phonz is in the doghouse?
I was hoping that he was just recovering from his injury, but he’s healthy enough to spell Eddie in kick returning….

How about a "Safety Tree"?
Commentators frequently talk about “coaching trees”: who comes from where, and who influences them (usually only applied to very successful coaches). Now we have the equivalent playing in our defensive backfield – great opportunity for the young guys and for our future!

Great acknowledgement!
I thought McBath had a great game as well. Infact, I think he has had several great games in a row. But last night when BDawk came out with an injury I was pretty nervous. But McBath got right in there and didn’t miss a beat. You didn’t hear his name on blown coverages or anything of the sort. That’s what you want from a back-up. And as a rookie, that is impressive.

Darcel is a class guy
I was fortunate to meet him briefly after the preseason scrimmage at Mile High, he took time to make sure to get to my daughter (who is six and somewhat shy) and talk with her. He definately is a new favorite player of mine.

Personally, it’s the little stories like these of who these players are as human beings, who they are inside and outside of the hash marks that interests me. And I’ll tell ya, I just keep hearing and seeing all these great stories about the good people we have on our team now. SUCH a refreshing change from years past.

I saw Hill point out who to cover pre snap
on one play in the 2nd half. And it looked like he and Darcel swapped coverages. It was nice to see someone(Hill) stepping up to not only lead, but teach on the fly. Darcel was definitely a visible part of the defense yesterday. I thought he played well.
