Horse Tracks 10/20/09 - Broncos head into bye at 6-0 after defeating San Diego; Time to start thinking big

GOOD MORNING, MHR Friends! Well, that's it. No more sneaking up on people. Everyone knows about the Denver Broncos now. Next comes a week off for the nicked-up players to heal; BDawk, Haggan and Fields most notably. I'd been waiting 13 months to see a game like this from Eddie Royal. No, not the zero catch-effort some moronic writer asked McDaniels after the game, but of course the two TD returns. Best part? They didn't require anything miraculous from Eddie - just speed and making the proper read. In other words, those results are repeatable. But it wasn't just Eddie last night - think of all the guys who made huge plays: Scheffler, Orton, BMarsh, Doom, D.J., Stokes, clutch conversions by Moreno & Buck, saving tackles from Champ; not to mention the spectacular blocking on ST and the O-Line. That's what makes this team great (there, I said it). Everyone contributes, everyone makes big, important plays. The Broncos are 6-0 and they have still yet to play anything close to a perfect game (although I think Orton is getting close). Suddenly, there are no "automatic" losses on the calendar; remember how the schedule makers had given the Broncos no chance in '09? It's time to start thinking big, folks (it's okay, we're just fans); like first-round bye big and beyond...

Thnx NYC!
Didn’t get to see the second half last night.. Looking forward to seeing us kick their butts all over the field!
Wasn’t expecting a win after the first half.. Was very pleasantly surprised this morning!
Thanks NYC and the 6-0 BRONCOS
we just need to remind BMAESH that he is not a kicker and KMOR to keep his helment on. LOL
live and die blue and orange

His helmet was knocked off during the play...no penalty...
the penalty was for spiking the ball at the defender in the ground…..rookie mistake letting his emotions get the best of him….same with Marshall……thats one thing I was worried about all night, keeping a level head through all of the emotion….

Good Mornin nyc, and Thanks... I heard from a friend from San Diego right after the game. She said after the Broncos shorted out the bolts, She heard the coach say,
“They are,Who we thought they were.”
Go Broncos
Real Power, comes with the realization that One cannot change the Moment;
only ones perception of it: Atitude! JQM
"That was disrespectful," said San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman
The idea of anyone on that team trying to lecture about being respectful damn near makes my blood boil
Lest anyone forget:

Nothing makes me happier than seeing the Chargers get their comeuppance
Oh and even the refs would like Merriman to shut up

One thing in fairness to Merriman...
…when the confrontation started before the game, it was Merriman who jumped in and pulled his guys away. He was trying to break the thing up, and I give hime respect for that.

Ya
What was Merriman talking about? At the beginning ESPN showed the footage and the Charger player came over and started the stuff. Chargers have always been like that.

wtf where they doing at the tunnel we come out of anyway....wouldnt let us on the field
that was classless….line up in front of the visitors tunnel and start chirping like a bunch of tweety birds….totally classless and petty….glad we shoved it back into their face with the final score!!

How Much
You want to bet that the trash talking has always happened before the games and the Chargers have always dominated.
This was their equivalent of thinking “same old Broncos.”
Well Rivers’ comments after the game said it all, this isn’t the same old Broncos and the Chargers got stunned. They know that their season is practically over.

"Just show them the film. Show them the film." - Josh McDaniels
Two things I like
There are many things to like about this team, but for me 2 things stand out: the ability to get a pass rush in comparison to past years, and game preparation. I’ll admit that I had some doubts about the Broncs going into SD, but I was sure of one thing – no blowout. This team has demonstrated the ability to stay close to teams which has got to take a ton of preparation. Kudos to the coaching staff for that.
That was the best Bronco win in a long long time. We all just witnessed the end of San Diego’s AFC West dominance last night. The myth that San Diego is uber talented was just destroyed and this lose will be very hard for them to rebound from. Would not surprise me one bit if the Dolts come out flat and KC beats them in KC next Sunday.
Uber Talented Myth
Man they are so lopsided too. There is no talent in so many places.

I didn't want the Chargers' last drive to end
How many times could Philip Rivers be driven into the ground on one possession? I lost count. It was so wonderful.

The Broncos serve notice to the rest of the league. “We are for real.”
And Josh McDaniels and Pat Bowlen have created quite a large learning curve for the rest of the league, as they must now scramble to keep up. 13-3 Baby!

By the way...
Did it stick out to anyone that after Sproles scored he pointed to his name on the back of his own jersey? That says everything I need to know about the Chargers. Aside from Philip Rivers (who is unquestionably great), the Dolts are a bunch of “me” guys, sort of like the Broncos may have been in recent years.

I’ve never seen so much swagger from a low-achieving team as I have from the Chargers the last 5 years. If you looked through media coverage of the NFL over the long-run, few teams have been pumped up as mightily as the Chargers with so little achievement on the field.
Much like a spoilt children..
.. Spoilt children often have that kind of attitude.. What is interesting though is that they are very quick to internally self destruct.. LT angry about not being played is an example of that.. that does not aid team cohesiveness, it breaks it apart from the inside..
Especially when contrasted ...
By Eddies response to both of his scores…

Thanks NYC, did you get any sleep last night?
You got to give SD some credit, they were ready to play. Finally we put them away and didn’t have to watch our defense give it right back to them. How about Mike Nolan bringing the pressure at the end, that was a beautiful thing not allowing them to sit back and pick us apart. We were the better team last night period.
Anyone catch what Gruden said at the end of the game, something along the lines of; “Would you rather have a qb who wins games or one who can throw the ball”

Well, I was so pumped up that I probably didn’t fall asleep until 12:45 or so, then up at 6:10. So not a ton of sleep, but at least I made the wise choice to watch the game on the couch rather than out. That would’ve been ugly…

I did make that other choice
I went out, and it was ugly…….but it was SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

That, and a black and white silent movie.
Awesome game
I’m still stoked about it. ONly watched about half of it because I was having a rollercoaster of emotions in the Dodger game (which ultimately made me want to kill all of humanity, but never mind that… Thank God for the Broncos!) ;-) ANYWAY…
Does anyone else have NFL Rewind? (I bought the Broncos games-only package.) I was going to try to watch part of the game this morning but it is STILL not up on NFL.Com NFL Rewind. Usually they go up a few hours after the games on Sunday, and I assumed MNF games go up by next morning, but it still says “available soon.” Pisses me off, why did I pay for that again…?
Oh well, saw the highlights, saw Eddie’s 2nd run and Scheffler’s awesome TD live too. What a sweet, sweet game.

Amazing Play
I was really on my seat when the defense kept giving up big plays for 10+ yard. But man when you look at it we gave up what? 1 TD and a handful of field goals to the Chargers?
Great defense. Plus you have to love designed mismatches. Scheffler on that rookie LB and San Diego could never adjust. Brilliant game.

Halloween’s around the corner, but unless the NFL bans halftime and the second halves of games, the Broncos aren’t turning into pumpkins anytime soon.

Going through the schedule I think we are headed for a first round bye!
I don’t understand how people say that the Broncos are a fluke. They have faced the toughest schedule by winning percentage of any of the undefeated or one defeat teams. Also all the Broncos have to do to finish 11-5 is go 5-5 in the last 10 games.
Lets go game by game here.
7 Bye
8 Nov 01 DEN @ BAL I think that Denver matches up well with Baltimore on the WR vs CB on both sides and have the defensive line to limit the amount of running successes. Also give McDaniels and Nolan 2 weeks to prepare and its easy. WIN 7-0
9 Nov 09 PIT @ DEN Again we just have to make sure that they become one dimensional (no running game) and put pressure on Big Ben. I would be scared more if it was in PIT but I expect that defense to play well with Troy back. Close game but LOSE 7-1
10 Nov 15 DEN @ WAS Easy. Jim Zorn, Jason Campbell, lost at home to KC, and 29th ranked scoring offense. Enough said. WIN 8-1
11 Nov 22 SD @ DEN Same game plan as last night. If we just controlled Sproules it would have been worse. Defense got left out too much because of Royal’s returns put them right back on the field (not that I’m complaining too much!). Key stat: 3 points scored by SD in 2nd half. WIN 9-1
12 Nov 26 NYG @ DEN Again close game. All depends on which NYG offense shows up. I believe we can stop their pass rush but idk how well their offense will do. Toss up goes to home team WIN 10-1
13 Dec 06 DEN @ KC KC 26th ranked scoring defense. WIN 11-1
14 Dec 13 DEN @ IND Peyton Manning planning for home field advantage in AFC. I’ll take Peyton on this one but do expect a close game. LOSS 11-2
15 Dec 20 OAK @ DEN Oakland, Russel, at home. Enough said. WIN 12-2
16 Dec 27 DEN @ PHI This is another tough one. Depends on what Philly team shows up. But it is at home and since it is a toss up (at this point we will see how well Philly does up until here). Win goes to home team though LOSS 12-3
17 Jan 03 KC @ DEN Again KC, in Denver. WIN 13-3 even with the subs playing, depending on what Indy does throughout the season that is.
There you go 13-3. I would guess that Indy also goes 13-3 just based on what their schedule looks like so Head-to-head tie gives them the 1 seed and Denver the 2 seed. Playoffs here we come!

I like the optimism
However, historically the Broncos have always found a way to lose at least one game a year that they have no business losing. McD’s preparation for games so far has led me to believe that there will not be a letdown vs. the Skins or KC. But I still get the same uneasy feeling when I look at those games on the schedule.

Reading the San Diego newspapers was heaven. Those guys have already “fired Norv”, “been eliminated from the playoffs” and discussed the pending “the massive rebuilding process”.
Seeing the wheels fall off the "uber talented Chargers" band wagon is a welcome site for my eyes. Even the players and fans seem to sense the doom that has befallen that team. It’s glorious.

A couple of things from Porkchop's article
According to ESPN’s Stats & Information, Rivers was sacked four times on blitzes.
You’d think with half of the division that he writes for playing, ol’ Bill would have actually watched the game and not have to rely on an outside agency to tell him what happened during the game.
Merriman said the two Royal returns were devastating for San Diego. "We can’t have that," Merriman said. "You can’t have two returns for scores. It would have been a totally different game if that didn’t happen."
Really? It probably would have been a totally different game if the SD offense had been able to score more than three points in the second half too!

A lot of sports writers mention their source when they cite statistics. I’m often puzzled when it’s something basic and easily found, but something like this would require some meticulous note-taking. Personally, I just know the Broncos blitzed a lot and got 5 sacks. I never would have know off the top of my head that 4 of the 5 sacks came via the blitz…
