Did McDaniels steal Steve Young's lunch money?
Did anyone else notice that in the postgame on ESPN when Stuart Scott asked Steve Young what he thought about the Broncos effort all he could talk about was how much talent the Chargers have. He kept saying " I guess their backs were not up against the wall enough". I felt that didn't want to give the Broncos any credit for the win and wanted to write it off as the Chargers just putting out a lack of effort. What really struck me however, was how he appeared angry that the Chargers didn't win the game. I don't know if Young feels a loyalty to Shannahan/ Bill Walsh from the Niners days, but he seemed emotionally invested the Chargers winning. Did anyone else notice that or was it just me?
The flip side of it is that the more the team is disrespected the more solidarity that they create. Now that more people are saying that the team if for real, the negative comments keep it in check. (Not that McDaniels needs anyone else to motivate the team). Every week they are winning as a team and someone else steps up to make a big play. I loved in the postgame seeing the smile on Eddie Royal face as he talked about the how the blocks really sprung him and he couldn't have done it without them. Everyone credits someone else for the things that they are doing well & no one wants the glory for themselves. This is a team that is easy to love and every week they get better. Credit the coaches, but also credit the players. They know that any win is better than a loss with good stats.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Young
Emotionally invested himself over the deep end during the offseason. He was at the forefront of attacking Denver’s moves, QB, and anyone who disagreed (Tom Jackson).

Speaking of Tom Jackson,
Dunno if anybody else seen him choose Denver as the suprise team of the year during one of the preseason Monday Night Countdowns. As he said it, Steve Young goes "Denver? really Denver? I can’t believe you just said Denver. So he continues to make his pick, followed by another “Denver?”
He couldn’t even fathom the thought of someone even speaking that name.

I was so proud of him then. They lambasted him for that comment and he has to be laughing everyday off camera.

I noticed it too.
And I agree that it has more than a little to do with Young’s friendship with Shanahan.

You have something with that, I think Young still regrets not coming to Denver in 99 and getting another ring.

I think SY was very unfair to the Chargers
His refusal to acknowledge the superior play of the Broncos, particularly in the second half, really discounted what WAS a great effort by the Chargers. Personally I expected a dominating performance from start to finish – I was totally shocked to see the protection that Rivers got in the first half, and even more suprised at how well they contained our running game. Hats off to the Chargers for ramping up and actually bringing their A game. Denver is simply a better and healthier football team – so Steve Young’s disrespect for Josh and Denver really came across as gross disrespect for a Chargers team that really did not deserve it.
by Flunkie on Oct 20, 2009 9:36 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
True
Chargers were killing us in the first half with screens. We made our now infamous halftime adjustments and shut them down in the second half. Does that mean the Chargers fell apart? No, not really. We simply adapted and conquered. This Chargers team is no slouch. They scored more points against us than any other team so far.

The bolts were super motivated for this game, had 2 weeks to build the hatred, and looked like a different team than the one they fielded against the Steelers. I thought Denver took their best shot. If the Chargers play at that level for the rest of the season, good things will happen to them. Can they do that?

Jamie Dukes and John Clayton were bad
but if you recall during the trade, Steve Young was literally emotionally upset at the firing of Shanny. I remember during the 2009 draft, Young kept saying, “You don’t trade away your franchise QB.” about 10 times, again, almost physically breaking down.
I would say of all the MSM, he has probably been one of the top 5 in terms of his disgust with the Shanny/Cutler situation. And now that he would be forced to admit his mistaken predictions, it’s quite hard for him to do. Throw in his personal friendship with Shanny and his own success under the Walsh/Shanny system, you have the makings of:
1) Someone who has no objectivity regarding the Broncos
2) Someone who has an internal desire to “prove” the Shanny/West Coast system is superior
3) Someone who takes the Broncos success as a personal affront to his own

It's better than how Boomer and Stuart Scott picked games.
They based their picks off of whose uniforms looked nicer. They went with the powder blues on this one. There’s some in depth analysis for ya…..

SY is blinded by his own arrogance...
In addition to all of the reason listed in the posts above. He was very fortunate to be a part of the 49er machine and the Bill Walsh system, but even then he thought he was better than Montana and pouted when he didn’t start. His current position at ESPN is simply a continuation of his over-inflated ego blinding sound reason.

Why wouldn't he be?
He did, after all, go to a school named after his great-grandpa…and starred at QB there. More than enough to make anyone arrogant IMO.
Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

You didn't imagine anything
I noticed it too and was dumbfounded by both what he said and how he said it. I’m not sure what all’s behind it, but the guy needs to learn a little objectivity or at the very least, have some fun with it like the rest of the guys on that ESPN team.

OK, but . . .
. . . he also said some good things about the Broncos. He said that we were “like New England” (about the biggest compliment in the mind of the media) in that we do all things well. He even stopped and added that we do a few things “great.” So it wasn’t all bad.
Honestly, I think the part of the season when we should all be angry at the “MSM” for “disrespecting” us is over. It was a very entertaining meme that has grown kind of stale. We’re not 4-2, we don’t need respect. In Dawkins’ words, it’s been “taken.”
I think we need to grow a thicker skin. I mean, yes, the Broncos were great. But the Chargers did lose, and of course analysts are going to talk about what the Chargers did wrong. Their offensive line was physically dominated the whole game, and it doesn’t surprise me that Young, a former quarterback, feels bad for Rivers in that situation. Heck, I almost felt bad for Rivers (key word almost), we were crushing him so badly.
When Young (or someone else) makes a comment that could, admittedly, be interpreted as anti-Denver, we should not assume that they intend it to be anti-Denver – especially when he goes on to praise Denver in the same segment.
by hudayberdi on Oct 20, 2009 10:28 AM MDT reply actions 1 recs
I understand that, but...
My purpose in the post was not meant to be a MSM bash as much as shock at the anger the Young exhibited. That is what was unusual. How many times does a commentator get upset at a team that they never played for lost against another. The only respect that the team needs is within the clubhouse.
That aside, from a purely viewer standpoint, if can’t leave your personal biases aside on a national broadcast, it bothers me. Most of the ESPN crew picked the Chargers to win, which is fine, but when the game is over let it go and assess the game. Did it occur to SY that maybe the reason Rivers held on to the ball was good coverage, not always having a deep route to throw to. If he wants to broadcast with a bias then work for a local team. I would feel the same way if happened with a team that was not the Broncos. I just happened to watch a lot of the coverage because it was.
by aldren on Oct 20, 2009 10:40 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's fair
I would agree that SY generally doesn’t provide “objective” analysis. He has strong opinions and definitely shares them. he also has his favorites in terms of franchises or players, as you point out. But he’s not there to do news, he’s there for opinion, so I think some of that comes with the territory.
Thanks for the post and the reply.

Somewhat agree, huday
I don’t mind biases, as long as people are honest about em. What I dislike is bias when people try to pass themselves off as “unbiased”. I mean Boomer Esiason is a blatant Bengals fan… good for him. Shannon Sharpe like the Broncos…. good. I would rather they just be open about it and have fun with it. Does Young do that? I don’t watch him enough to know.

You make a good point about SY being there for strong opinion & not objectivity. I guess that is my own issue with the way that sports is covered these days.
Thank you for the insight.
by aldren on Oct 20, 2009 10:57 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just to be clear
I think the subject is totally fair game. And I think you are basically right about Young.
I guess I just wish that we as a fan base would look at both the positives and negatives in the media. For example, let’s celebrate Jon Gruden and the fact that by the end of the game he was totally in the tank for Denver, waxing eloquent about our coaching, our effort, our attitude, etc. Then it makes it easier to also ridicule the wierdos out there who don’t seem to get it (SY).

The picks
I wouldn’t say the MSM respect is there yet, not that Denver needs it. Only two picks were for Denver, Coach Ditka and Tom Jackson, the rest said SD. Most of the “expert” picks on other sites also said Chargers. I like Pete’s picks on USA today…he is a Bronco fan. :)
Personally, I prefer the underdog role. I like being picked against. While it makes for a great game, I am kind of disliking being behind at half-time. I’d like to get up on a good team and beat them down worse in the second half. I know, really spoiled, but I keep waiting for the Broncos of the last couple years to show up and do terrible in the second half. I can’t get used to improving in the second half rather than flailing.
by NDbronco on Oct 20, 2009 10:57 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Totally, completely agree
It is such a weird feeling not hanging on for dear life to a narrow lead, but instead playing from behind and having the faith that we can come back. It takes some getting used to! In my lifetim as a fan (goes back – barely – to the drive), the Broncos have been in dogfights int he 2nd half. Now they absolutely OWN it. Strange. I have to say I prefer it though!
I love McDaniels, and I love Shanahan. Wouldn’t it be great if McDaniels could replicate Shanahan’s 1st quarter success, without losing his 2nd-half mojo?

About the Steve Young comments...
most of these guys talk out of their ass and stumble on each others’ lines. They have to try to set themselves apart. I thought for the most part that he was complimentary.
Now, Trent Dilfer after the game……..he had a serious man-crush on Orton. Wow.

That's because Dilfer
Was frequently called a “game manager” like KO has been. Gotta give Trent credit though, he makes some very good points and understands the finer aspects of the qb position.

Steve Young's perspective has really surprised me this off-season
He has a weekly radio segment here in the Bay Area, and I generally make a point to listen to it. I must disagree with many in this thread—I think Steve Young is one of the more intelligent, insightful commentators out there. His radio segment is always quite interesting with his thoughts on different teams (mostly from having been in many of the same situations himself.)
I think the pro-Shanahan thing is largely the crux of his discontent with the Broncos. Also, having been a “franchise” QB himself, I don’t think he can fathom how you would trade away Cutler. That being said, I really was surprised he didn’t take Cutler to task for how he behaved during the early off-season. Young typically is a big proponent of acting like a professional, and I really thought he’d come out and blast Cutler for acting like such a baby. On the flip side, I also can’t believe he hasn’t been more supportive of Orton, who possesses many of the qualitites Young normally lauds: leadership, hard work, playing within your role, willingness to learn, etc. Steve has me scratching my head on this one.
