Cutler gets new deal
I know, im sorry, i hate bringing up Cutler just like most of you but after a 3-2 record 10 tds 7 picks and less yards and about 15 less qb rating than Orton, he gets the cash money.
Jay Cutler agrees to two year contract extension with Bears good through 2013. An NFL network/nfl.com exclusive. [...] Jay cutler's deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money and roughly $30 million in new money. We'll continue to report it on NFLNetwork
30 million...2 years....i think that must include through 2009-2013 so about 8 million a year from now on. Interesting move, i guess they arent gonna let this guy go after trading 2 first rounders and a neckbeard nobody.
Thoughts?

Interesting Timing
I might have waited to announce this until after a big time win.
Still I think everyone saw this coming.

Think Pat Bowlen would have forked over that money to a QB that has only proved that he has the potential to do well?

Jay's contract was in the neighborhood of 6mil a year for the next 3 years
an extra five million a year looks to put him around 11 mil a year which I think is about twice as much as Brady, and about the same as Peyton manning, but that should be double checked by someone.
The real doozy is that Peytona nd Brady will their new deals in the next year or so, so this is just a laying of the table for a banquet right now….Cutler will likely be targetting those guys’ numbers once again in a couple of years.
same ol, same ol….

from Florio - best line I've seen so far (of course i'm jaded)
We need to see the full deal before comparing it properly to other quarterback contracts. On the surface, however, it doesn’t seem like the kind of big-money package that should be paid to a guy who cost the Bears two first-round draft picks and, as it turns out, one of the best young quarterbacks in the league.

weird
I was watching the Falcons/Bears game…I must’ve been naive or blind to the fact that how much Cutler pouts. He had some solid throws and some that were way off…either way he pouted the same as if it’s not his fault. Looking back, I remember him doing that with the Broncs but I shrugged it off as a qb being intense. Nowadays, I just can’t stand looking at his smug face. Good for the Broncos…bad for the Bears. Ok I’m done.

Worried? no
But since you care, I could come explain how I DO feel about it in one of the many existing threads about Orton and Cutler at WCG…. I kid.
I congratulate the Bears on signing him now… I think it might be a little rich for what he has done, but they have no prayer of getting a comparable player in at that price, so it was a wise move.

I know
i was replying to Dils to get off your guys board… we can say all we want at our house, thats the point… and you guys can say what you want here,
but we really have no business coming in here all “worried haha i can’t believe you didn’t get over the trade” -it’s nonsense and time to move on
when in fact, if Kurt Warner was just resigned to a 30 million dollar deal, a bunch of us would be talking about it. same goes here, you’re on a bye week, and this is NFL news… right?

I've replied on their board before
Besides it’s during the week and not during a game so there’s nothing wrong with responding here every now and then and having some fun. Besides Kurt Warner getting resigned is not the same as Cutler and I hardly think we would dedicate a whole post to it.
Like it or not, these 2 teams are bound by this trade and it will effect both of our teams for years to come. Emotions run high and fans of both teams have a right to feel a certain way about it. Orton is doing well and these guys are undefeated and they have a right to feel good about it. We’re happy with Cutler and can feel good about it. We post here and they post there and as long as no one is trolling then it shouldn’t be a problem. And I wasn’t trolling.
by Dils on Oct 20, 2009 11:58 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
come on man
with all that his been going on these boards the last few days, that could easily be considered trolling, and with the efforts largely going on since sundays game to clean this discussion up, it really isn’t kosher to post like that.
While i know you, and know it’s not trolling, they might not. All i’m saying
these 2 teams are bound because we continue to bash each other about it.
Kyle Orton on the Broncos = Apples
Jay Cutler on the Bears = Oranges

how surprising
Gee, I wonder if anyone predicted this?
A better question might be — is there anyone who still believes Cutler’s leaving was about his relationship with McDaniels? I’m honestly not trying to say I told you so, but it would be interesting to hear how this is painted by people who thought McDaniels drove Cutler out of Denver. At this point, we’re better off for making the trade. And I’m not trying to rub it in. I’m simply curious how people who advocated the point of view that Cutler’s holdout was only about being offended by trade talk rather than the desire to gain a new contract will explain this.

McDaniels has stated multiple times that neither Cutler or his agent ever once made mention of his contract.
A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

true
I believe him, and Joe Ellis said the same thing.
The only way they could have offered Cutler ‘security’ would have been to re-work his contract — though. He did make a point of asking for security, even though he never mentioned the word ‘contract.’ They could have changed the contract’s language regarding trades, giving him a trade-approval clause, but it would have made sense to address the extension issue at that point rather than wait and negotiate anew at the end of the contract.
An extension such as the one he just received would have fit the bill of what he asked for. And I’ve previously posted that Cook & Cutler expected to re-negotiate his contract around now (Fatsis: citing Sundquist). Cook’s MO, which has been established in his other contract negotiations, is to avoid mentioning the contract while concomitantly putting pressure on the team to resolve the issue. There aren’t any other solutions to the problem besides restructuring the contract (or trading the player). And the purported problem that requires resolution always bears Cook’s heavy-handed stamp. Reports of disgruntlement invariably come through Cook. He’s perfected the art of playing out these grievances publicly.
I view the Cook MO as a softening up technique combined with a heavy dose of Personal Injury lawyer’s PR about an aggrieved victim. I find the whole dramatic presentation as believable as Cook’s comment that the ONLY reason Favre needed to be released from the Jets was so he could retire for a final time as a Packer.

Thanks Colinski!
As you have aptly pointed out in previous posts and comments it was always about the money. Buc Cook has manipulated the whole situation to achieve exactly what he has right now. A lot of sideways damage occurred to people who didn’t deserve it, but that wouldn’t matter to a person with his ethics. I’m happy Cutler got his money, and I’m happy with our team as currently constituted.

well, actually...........................
It was about playing for coaches that he liked AND the money.
Moreover, to add to the confusion; what hasn’t been explored in the possibility that Cutler’s request to be traded was being explored by the team. We’ve usually framed it as a bifurcation — either Cutler or McDaniels wanted the trade, rather than both.
Cutler’s statements at the time of Shanahan’s firing are fairly strident. He wasn’t concerned that his comments would be perceived as critical of Bowlen’s decision. He also states that the removal of Bates (QB coach) and other offensive coaches would be a further offense. He and Cook return to this issue after his trade request and — quite noticeably — make no mention of being offended by trade talks. This is very significant, and it bears repeating. The slight that purportedly set off the impasse between McDaniels and Cutler is nowhere to be found at the end.
You can look up the “you know” interview with Rich Eisen and listen to his answer to the question of whether he asked for a trade himself, before McDaniels was hired. He conspicuously avoids the direct question but refers to a misunderstanding that developed shortly after Shanahan was fired. Cook also cites the failure to retain the offensive coaches, after the trade request, and, like Cutler, makes no mention of a rationale involving the trade talks. Very few fans noticed this shifting rationale. And very few fans noted that this new (or original) rationale cited the very fact of hiring McDaniels rather than anything he did once arriving (although the decision of which coaches to let go was his, but he did consider retaining the others). And some were retained, such as Dennison and Turner.
Communication could have been part of the problem, although I rather doubt that Bowlen promised anything substantive. It’s more likely that he promised to consider retention of certain coaches. Bowlen, a lawyer, would never promise anything that could be used against him in court, and a broken promise can be grounds for a suit. The lawyers here at MHR can explain the finer points of this idea from contract law.
Cutler’s initial trade request (reported by Peter King) could have emboldened Xanders and McDaniels to look at trades. And that would explain why they were much more comfortable with the idea of trading him than fans believed. What they didn’t foresee was Cutler’s reaction (and Cook’s, more importantly) when they were notified about trade talks, which happened on the morning of Sat., February 28.
I won’t attempt to review all the details of this story at this point, but Cook and Cutler’s story had massive holes in it from the start. Neither Cutler nor Cook answer many of the questions that are put to them about the story. For instance, how did they hear about the trade request. Klis states in a report within days of the story breaking that Cutler knew about the trade talks that morning, alluding to a precise time. McDaniels says he told them that morning. Cook refers to internet reports and having heard from Cutler, but never offers specifics. He also parses his comments in a suspicious fashion; commenting in general rather than answering the question. Cutler never tells us how he learned, but he comments about the Broncos cutting off talks with Cook after the news hit the internet.
The point of cutting off communications with Cook that day is possibly significant since the “source close to the situation,” who Williamson cites, states that Cook is trying to arrange trades himself, but, as we know, he can’t unless the Broncos give him permission. We can conclude that the source that Williamson cites is Cook himself. It’s a source that knows everything about the issue (odd for anyone on the first day) and also knows Cutler’s intentions in great detail, which very few people would be party to. And, most notably of all, it’s a source that knows that Cutler wants a trade at that point, only hours after the purported slight. The Bears are named as one of the teams Cutler wants to be traded to.
A final point. The Cassel aspect of this issue has also been framed as a bifurcation. Schefter’s original report had teams approaching Denver with the intention of prying Cutler loose. Wiiliamson’s “source close to the situation” attempts to turn the story upside down, with Denver dangling Cutler in order to obtain Cassel. There are many problems with that version. Cutler clearly had far greater value than Cassel. He was a pro-bowler, had much more experience, and yielded far less once the trades were actually made. Cassel also had a very unfriendly contract. Also, he was available for 3 weeks and could have been obtained all along, if he was valued that highly by McDaniels. No evidence of Denver ‘going after Cassel’ emerges, except for later reports that appear to be based on Williamson’s “source close to the situation.” However, that particular angle to the story is pushed from the very beginning by Cutler himself. — as if scripted. He continually plants seeds about McDaniels wanting Cassel. He shows no evidence to corroborate that version, but he continually repeats that frame at every opportunity.
If McX were seeking to grant Cutler’s request then the offers for Cutler could be re-framed as an attempt to prepare for life without Cutler. Belichick has confirmed that there were no serious offers for Cassel, which is consistent with what the Broncos said. Finding a QB eventually would have been important, though. The “source close to the situation,” which Williamson cites, says that Cutler will probably leave at the end of his contract, so the need to replace Cutler eventually was a possibility that most fans hadn’t even considered. Holding here against his will was a possibility, by franchising him, but it would be prohibitively expensive and damaging to team chemistry. Many people have framed the Cutler issue as a choice by the Broncos, and rather than one made by Cutler (and Cutler reinforces this “the Broncos did it” framing). Whether we like the idea or not, the player still has the option of leaving at the end of his contract, so teams must prepare for that possibility.
My conclusion — Cutler was fully involved in the PR campaign from the very beginning. He sold the idea of McDaniels not wanting him and wanting “his guy” as well as he might sell a play-action fake on the field. And when that part of the story lost it’s usefulness it was dropped. There was no mention of the original offense at the end. It had disappeared. For an issue of such importance, one that would spur him to ask for a trade from a team which he supposedly loved playing for (according to him), it held so little importance at the end that it didn’t merit mention.
A doctrine insulates the devout not only against the realities around them but also against their own selves. The fanatical believer is not conscious of his envy, malice, pettiness and dishonesty. There is a wall of words between his consciousness and his real self.
