Horse Tracks 10/21/09 - Ravens should have LT Gaither back for game versus Broncos

Fun fact of the day - according to the popular and traditional measure (yards), the Broncos' defense (262.5) ranks second to that of the Giants (257.7 ypg). Yet, the Giants have allowed 119 points - 80% more than the 66 points Denver has allowed. Consider this next time you want to cite a team's offensive or defensive rank by yardage gained or allowed. It just doesn't matter - find out what the points scored/allowed are, and compare those instead.

Thanks Doug for the Horse Tracks
Adam Schefter raised a good question this morning on his Twitter: @Adam_Schefter : After 6 games, Kyle Orton has been as good, and probably better, than Jay Cutler. So if Cutler gets 2 years, $30 mil, what does Orton get?
What do you guys think?
Moreno 09 and beyond!!!

2 years 60 mil
He’s won about twice as many games this season. Makes sense.

In all seriousness, the spot market for quarterbacks can get crazy. I like Matt Cassell a lot more than some others around here, but the #34 pick and an obscene contract was an astounding price for someone who’d played about 8 good pro games.
On the plus side, there are no Scott Piolis getting new GM jobs this year. The tycoon-joker owners who like to overspend, like to overspend for players known for throwing 60-yard ropes, not guys who are smart and know when to throw the ball away. I believe that Orton will be viewed, accurately, as a system player worth more to Denver than to any other team. And I think the guy knows what a good thing he has going. But I’m in no position to tell him to turn down a truckload of money if some wise, high-achieving titan of industry decides to offer it to him.
it’s funny how nobody’s talking about Brandstater right now.

Without having any clue what will happen with the CBA, let’s just say no salary cap in 2010 would be opportune for the Denver Broncos.
With potential signing bonuses and such, it will not be a good year for Pat Bowlen’s wallet.

Have to agree
with your comment Chibronx. Espec. this part echoes my thinking
I believe that Orton will be viewed, accurately, as a system player worth more to Denver than to any other team.
That doesn’t mean the Broncs have him over the barrel by any means, but if Orton is happy and successful playing in the system and likes the organization and living here, it might result in a contract agreement lower than what other QBs might gain simply based on production numbers. Will be interesting to see.

Orton and McDaniels are a perfect match
I’ve always envisioned Orton being extended, and giving the Broncos a discount (he’ll take Cassel money per year, is my guess — and he’ll get 3 years, what? $30 with $15 guaranteed?). The intrigue comes from when the Broncos will sign him: do they wait, and watch his stock rise (or fall); or do they lock him up now when, if he’s willing to sign, he’d probably be willing to take less?
Not having to draft a Bradford or a Locker will save the Broncos roughly $45 mil in guaranteed money. Not having two first round picks also frees up money. Which means we might be able to resign Kuper, Doom, and Marshall, as well.

Pat Bowlen better have his checkbook ready. There are alot of contracts due.

My guess for Orton? 5 years/$80 million similar to an Aaron Rogers deal.

No joke.
Orton, Doom, Marshall, Scheffler, Kuper.
Are they going to be able to sign all of them? Are they all Restricted Free Agents?
All 5 are vital, IMO.

I have a feeling we keep the first 3
with Scheffler being a toss up based on how much money he wants, same goes with Kuper.

Uncapped year
Doesn’t mean that the owners can go hog wild in signing free agents. The top 12 playoff teams can only sign a free agent if they lose a free agent. There are also other preventive measures but I don’t really know what they are. I think it has to do with some kind of percentages but I couldn’t find a whole lot out about that

Having an uncapped year will ONLY be good for teams that have a lot of their own players to resign (and restrict).

That Mariotti piece about Cutler and Orton
made me as happy as a clam this morning. Although I think the twitter thing wasn’t as big of a deal as he made it, just guys having fun, he’s pretty spot-on about Cutler’s bad side and frustrating side, along with all of his talent. Orton’s a better fit for McDaniels’ control, smart, accuracy-dependent offense. Cutler will be better in Chicago when they improve the people around him on offense, to be fair, but after reading that article I was reminded why I think we got the better of that deal.

And of course
with all those turnovers in the end zone, Cutler does the “we” thing rather than ever taking responsibility himself directly for interceptions.

Making a big deal....
…you are probably right. That is one reason why I am glad we don’t have Cutler anymore. I don’t have to deal with the Cutler/Rivers saga anymore and was happy that wasn’t one of ESPNs storylines leading up to the game. Orton is not that kind of a player who gets wrapped up in stuff like that. I mena he said it himself in a weekly press conference that he doesn’t care about his national reputation. Focus on the task at hand with your teammates.

When I say the twitter thing wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things, it’d still be annoying to have to deal with that kinda crap every week. Meanwhile. Brandon Marshall is like Pollyanna now. And Orton as you say is not one to draw attention to himself any more (and he’s matured since he first came in the league). I’m sure the Broncos’ PR staff is also glad to not have Cutler around anymore, hah hah.

Yards vs. Points
While I agree yards per game is a flawed stat, points per game can be equally misleading. For example, think of the 2007(?) Denver DEF that didn’t give up a TD for 4 or 5 games but was allowing lots of yards… and promptly gave up huge points the rest of the season.
A team that gives up lots of yards, but few points is likely due for a big correction… it probably means the opposing offenses have had unusally bad luck with missed field goals, turnovers after long-drives, etc…. but at some point the other teams are likely to average out to the same rates as the DEF allows for the rest of the field.
I believe a number of studies have disproven the “bend-but-not-break” defense, at least as something that can be maintained for a long-sample size/multiple seasons (some teams have managed it for a season, but then give up a ton of points the following year).
Luckily for Denver, its not like we’re giving up lots of yards either… we’re 2nd in that stat. Basically, this defense is just playing really well, by whatever stat/measure you want to use.
by cjfarls on Oct 21, 2009 9:14 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m confused here. Obviously, there will always be outliers and exceptions. But when it comes down to it, what do you think is a better measure of a defense? Yards or points?
Points differential is always a better statistic, but when I’m isolating the offense or defense I’d rather look at points than yards. The 2008 Broncos are a perfect example; it was ridiculous how many people called them “elite” or “the #2 offense in the NFL.”

by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 21, 2009 9:30 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Depends one what you are trying to measure
One of the things people trip over in stats is seeing the difference between indicators and results. Some stats tell you how well someone has done, others do a better job of telling you how well they will do.
For example, let’s say you were interested in rainfall. Around here (Portland, OR), it rains from October to March pretty much everyday. If you just looked at average daily rainfall, you would predict the same amount of rain for all times of the year. Looking a little deeper, you could look at a calendar and make a better prediction.
So, points allowed is a good measure of how well a defense has performed, but I don’t think it’s as good a predictor as yards.
by PDXTai on Oct 21, 2009 10:38 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I remember an article a couple weeks ago
was talking about the same thing with respect to turnovers. Turnovers have incredible explanative power (they won the turnover battle, so that’s why they won the game), but they don’t have all that great predictive power (they’re averaging 1.5 turnovers a game, but that doesn’t mean they’re likely to get that this game). Now, some teams are still better at getting turnovers than others, but a large portion of the turnover differential is still random variation. So the teams that are doing extraordinarily well at it are likely to do not quite as well in the future, and teams that are doing extraordinarily poorly are likely to do a little better in the future.
by BTS on Oct 21, 2009 11:20 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly! Well said PDXTai
Basically, neither yards nor points is very good stat on their own…. in combination, you begin to be able to tell a story.
For example. Lets say a team (call them the “Donkeys”) only gave up 10 points in a game (less than Denver’s current avg/game). Lets also say the the Donkey’s punter had a huge day, and netted 55 yards per punt, including 4 kicks which pinned the BrownRedLions inside the 10. Lets call the opposing offense the “CLEWASDET BrownRedLions”. The BrownRedLions offense had 400+ yards, but 3 missed FGs and a red zone fumble on a bad snap, and a failed 4th down in the redzone at the end of the game.
Would you say the defense played very well, even though they gave up a ton of yards? I’d say no, because “Cleveland” left somewhere between 9-23 points on the field, with very little influence by the Defense… on a “typical” day against a non-inept opponent, that DEF would’ve been scorched. In such a case, the yards allowed might be a MUCH better indicator of the Defense performance.
This is why advanced stats, like those at FootballOutsiders and elsewhere, are so much more useful in general, than most traditional stats. Those advanced stats at FO measure success, and control for things like opponent strength, grabage time yards, etc.
No stat is perfect, but that is why looking at multiple stats, including advanced stats, can give us a MUCH better appreciation of whats happening than any single stat.

sorry about the bad cut-paste organization
what an atrocity of organization… need to remember to proofread more.
by cjfarls on Oct 21, 2009 11:37 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Obviously, I agree that the clearest picture is painted by a combination of statistics. I understand that a bad defense can have a lucky day in giving up lots of yards without points, and so on.
But we’re not talking about a singular game here, nor are we talking about using multiple or complex metrics. Naturally, the more games (larger sample) and the more stats utilized, the more accurate our measure.
My point above was not to say that points allowed are a fabulous or all-telling measure of a defense. It was that between such simple stats as yards and points, I’d submit that points are much more important.

My best measurement is the "eyeball" measurement
And my “eyeballs” tell me that the 2009 Denver Broncos defense is GOOOOOOOOD. I’ll be honest, they frighten and intimidate me from the other side of the TV screen. In a good way.
2009 Season Motto: TAKE IT!! TAKE IT!! TAAAAAAAKE IT!!!!!

by powderaddict on Oct 21, 2009 3:36 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Except that “eyeball” measurement can be easily deceived by opposition. A mediocre team playing the 2009 Browns will look great… a good team playing 2009 Denver may look bad…
So even “eye ball” measurements are flawed.
As for Doug’s points vs. yards… I really think PDXtai is right…
If I’m trying to predict future performance, I’d stick with yards.
If I want to describve past performance, I’ll use points.
If I want to tell a story that has robust justification, I should probably combine them, use advanced metrics, and perhaps most importantly bring in some “eyeball” measurements.
by cjfarls on Oct 22, 2009 1:38 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Throw in
Game plans, situational circumstances, teams played, match ups, etc. and all stats should be taken with a grain of salt. What stats are good for is finding trends. i.e. one team allows yards not points while another team allows points not yards. How does that match up with the trends of opponents offences. Even then stats aren’t always true.
... if you have a belief, you will tend to find things that support it. But if you have a prejudice, you’ll move heaven and earth to maintain it. BroncoBear

New name for the Defence?
In the “Paige: McDaniels worth his weight in gold” article Woody mentions the “The Doom switch to linebacker, the Gloom defense…”
That would make the coolest name for the new Broncos D!
The Denver Doom and Gloom D!!
Go Broncos!

Woody should not be credited with naming anything which relates positively to the 2009 Broncos. No way, no how.

That is already taken.
By an old Dallas team I think. It would be like some other team naming there D The orange Crush.

How about the "Temporary Insanity Defense"?
As in anyone who said Dumervil wouldn’t be good in the 3-4 clearly lost their mind for a while.

No. Woody already takes credit for Rocktober
He deserves nothing but scorn for how he helped turn Broncos fans against the team, the coach, and the new QB this off season.

One thing I hate....
is all the “experts” are now saying…..Who could have forseen the Broncos at 6-0, and any one that says they could, are liars!
AHHHHHH HORSEPUCKY!!!!!!! We here at MHR still know, and knew, and believed!!
19-0 LOL there I said it
The biggest bonus of going 19-0 (and yes I was rooting for the Pats to do it) would be stopping the old has beens (’72 phins) from popping that stupid bottle of champagne every year!
I still remember the MNF game when the Broncos were the last undefeated (that season) going into Miami, and they were interviewing Bob Griese, and he was rooting for the Dolphins over his own son Brian, just so they could pop open that friggin bottle of champagne, how sad is that?

Some research would be nice
Lombardi is on the bandwagon, but it would be nice if he did his own research. He makes the statement “Not allowing the Chargers a third-down conversion in the second half was impressive, as is giving up only three points in the second half all season.” Umm, sounds great, but the Bengals scored a TD in the 4th quarter — I know, I was there and saw it.
This little factoid is pooping up everywhere, and stems directly from a Gruden MNF comment. Another error popping up is that Royal was the first Bronco to score on both a kick and a punt return. As we all know, it happened in 1961 as well — again a Grudenism from MNF that has been reprinted multiple times, including on the official NFL.com recap. Ironically, while denverbroncos.com notes it was the second in team history, they got the year wrong.
I decry the fact most Americans rely upon sole-source media for their “knowledgebase.” Now the media is relying on the media — I can just see Lombardi grabbing a pencil to make a note about “only three points” as the misinformation spewed forth from Gruden’s mouth — we’re in a downward spiral that will end with the media interviewing one another about Paris Hilton’s views on world events. Oh, wait… That was last week on Larry King…

mmmmmmmmmmmm.......crow
an awful lot of crow being served up today. While the pundits are certainly “believing” the broncos are “real” now, I won’t be surprised when they all pick the other team again next week…

Punter tryouts?
Adam Schefter just tweeted this:
Adam_Schefter Something of a homecoming — the Broncos worked out former University of Colorado punter Mitch Berger today.
I’m not entirely surprised the Broncos aren’t… entirely happy with Brett Kern, but wondering why then they wouldn’t bring back Colquitt? Must be more to the story.
DP also reports that the team will be getting a few days off for the bye week, which is nice.

Cutler comment in Ochocinco article
This league is funny. It’s all about timing. You could be one of the best players in the league but if you’re not in the right system, you don’t have the right people around you, there’re a lot of different aspects that go into making a player or breaking a player.
Translation: Oh I wish I had BMarsh and Eddie and Scheffy and Graham and Stokely….and a running game….
I’m not wishing him ill will (indeed, he says some nice things about the Broncos in that article), it’s just a very eyebrow raising comment.
