DB - Bye Week: McDaniels - Broncos TV
DB - Building Into the Bye Week - Patrick Smyth
DPP - Krieger: Broncos' brainpower key to McDaniels' early success
"It's beginning to look like my prediction of a 5-11 Broncos season will be slightly off the mark...I've made a lot of erroneous forecasts over the years - an occupational hazard - but seldom this erroneous. This is forecasting 30 and snow and getting 80 and sun. So I could always be a TV weatherman." It's actually a very interesting column, in addition to a large heaping of crow...

LTC - Surprise! Broncos are good - Brian Howell
"OK, I’ll admit I was wrong. Like 95 percent of the people who had an opinion about the Denver Broncos, I figured they wouldn’t be any good this year." Puzzling. Howell serves himself some humble pie despite probably being the most objective beat writer all year long. Perhaps he saw the crowfest his DP counterparts have been chowing on and thought it looked good?

CST - Nothing like forward progress - Neil Hayes
"But there's also no doubt that Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler and a superior offensive line have made Kyle Orton a much more effective player in Denver than he ever was in Chicago." Wait a minute, now. I though Jay Cutler made those guys into good players?
PFW - Broncos' Bailey proving talk of decline premature - Dan Parr
ESPN - Broncos at the bye - Bill Williamson
"A throw-in of the Jay Cutler trade, Orton appears to be a perfect fit for McDaniels’ offense." This needs to stop. I read it on MHR last spring and everywhere else. Kyle Orton was never a throw-in on the Cutler trade. Josh McDaniels chose him over Jason Campbell and others...
DPP - Woody's Mailbag: 6-0 and 10 to go
"I find it funny that people are coming out of the woodwork now claiming they had the Broncos 12-4 all along. They told all their friends (both of them)." What a guy.

To be fair to Porkchop
the Bears probably thought of Orton as a throw in of the trade.

We can't really call Orton a "throw-in," can we?
There would have been no point in trading Cutler without getting a QB in return.
McD traded Cutler to Chicago because Chicago had Orton. Saying otherwise implies that they would have been just as fine trading Cutler to SF and getting Alex Smith or to some other team for some other chump QB. They didn’t, and to call KO a throw-in is to say that he’s some out-of-nowhere fluke. He might be, but the Broncos expected him to do what he’s, otherwise they wouldn’t have traded for him.
That being said, I’m pretty sure Orton and McD couldn’t care less.

I guess it’s all in perception. Those “ignorant of the facts” saw Jay “that out pattern just turned my water in to wine” Cutler leave and Denver get two draft picks a “serviceable” QB. At the time most, gag, “analysts” were saying that this was just a stop-gap so McDaniels wouldn’t look like a fool and have to draft a QB last year and they could limp into this QB loaded draft.
I can see McDaniels and Orton having a sit down early and forming a strong partnership. No one believed in either one and together they would prove them all wrong.
by DickVMI on Oct 22, 2009 8:04 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Denver probably could have traded Cutler to Washington for J Campbell and the same draft pick compensation they got from Chicago.
There was probably a deal that could have been made for Brady Quinn and draft picks.
McDaniels said Orton was the QB he wanted (plus the picks). Good scouting coach.

this is just a thought
but for all the people who think that Orton is a product of the talent around him, while Cutler wasn’t, just compare Orton’s stats so far this year to Culter’s from last season. Jay attempted about 6 more passes a game than Orton has been, but Orton has been better than Cutler was across the board.

The best part?
This is only the beginning of the McDaniels era. I’m happy to be a Broncos fan, because we can expect the same commitment year after year.
Mike used to have this commitment that got a little lazy near the end, and it’s fantastic that Bowlan found the next Shanahan for the next 10+ years.. great work.

Draft
Moving toward the middle of the season talk starts about the upcoming draft. I was thinking last night, could Denver be in the wonderful “best on the board” position this year?
Other than some younger talent in the secondary what are some of the other needs?
(That and we need to draft someone to replace that Clady bum…sheesh whatta bust)
by DickVMI on Oct 22, 2009 7:38 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
With the expected influx of an unusually high number of underclassmen in the 2010 draft, there should be some excellent opportunities to trade back in that draft or into the 1st round of 2011 (maybe a rookie wage scale).
Wild speculation, but if we have no glaring need that can be addressed with our pick, maybe we can trade our 1st round pick (formerly Chicago) to a team looking to move up to take a slipping prospect (i.e. Sam Bradford). The Patriot way.
Of course, teams in 2010 may have to draft with the understanding there may be no NFL football played in 2011.
This is my favorite website.
by McGeorge on Oct 22, 2009 8:21 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, remember how everyone was bashing McDaniels, calling him arrogant, trading Denver’s 1st round versus Chicago’s.
Guess that is just one more thing that looks brilliant.
by DickVMI on Oct 22, 2009 9:27 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was one of them. It’s nice to be wrong sometimes (like this time).
Instead of trading Chicago’s or our pick, I was left wondering why we didn’t retain the option to select which pick we’d send Seattle until after the 2009 season.
Whatever, reading the Seattle blog from time to time, you see that Denver’s success is just crushing their spirit.
Now hopefully A. Smith can start making some plays again. He started out real hot, but has cooled since the injury.

by McGeorge on Oct 22, 2009 10:19 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
At the time, it sounded like Seattle was not going to make the deal unless they got our pick — they were very firm about it. I still think that, regardless of how the chips fell, Coach’s willingness to agree to that reflected well on the confidence he felt in the team and coaching staff he was assembling. Given what we know about this team now, how could that not have inspired them, to have the coach essentially roll the dice on a draft pick as a way of asserting his expectations for the team? Thought it was magnificent then, but doubly so now. Of course, I still didn’t think we’d get more than 9 Ws this season. lol

Not to brag (much) ....
but I am the guy who had the best sense of what this team was in the whole worldwide media. So, an article like Woody Paige’s kind of makes me smirk. Funny thing, a lot more than 2 people saw my prediction, and criticized it a the time. Now, I only wish I had gone a little further with it.

For both DickVMI and Ted!
I was on record here with a 9-7 prediction, due to a “brutal schedule” that McDaniels is currently using to line the bottom of a bird cage somewhere…

I have actually hit FBO on Twitter a few times
for their EPIC FAIL in projecting the Broncos this year. Within a season, statistics are useful indicators. For one individual player, season-to-season, they can be useful indicators. When there is more than 50% roster turnover, though, last year’s team statistics are utterly meaningless.
FBO falls into the same trap as the John Claytons of the world, in a different way. Both are using last year’s understanding (quantitatively for FBO, qualitatively for MSM,) and assuming that that understanding is useful, and that things will continue as they have been in the past. That’s a foolish way to think in such a multi-variate system.

Man do I love to see you shoot bullets into Football Outsiders. I feel the same way about their manipulation of stats. FBO is a lot more hot air than substance.
Bill Simmons – back in the preseason, he predicted the Broncos to be his dark horse winner of 2009. That was not an easy call for a MSM guy with no affiliation to Denver.

He was hilarious last week
Talking about how many bad teams there are this year, he relayed a story wherein he went through them all, but somehow forgot the Browns. The result was a flurry of insistent e-mails from Browns fans saying: hey, what about us! We stink, too.

Simmons is a funny guy and that probably holds him back for some. But IMO, he is a must read above all the other MSM NFL writers.
I like Peter King and Pat Kirwan, love Scheffler, and Lombardi is good when he is not being a contrarian just because, but Simmons is my go to MSM must read for his NFL thoughts.

I am liking Woody Paige less and less
Ever since McDaniels called him “less educated” he has been sarcastic, smarmy, and bitter. He used to be so much fun to read, now it seems he is trying to defend what little credibility he has left. I have tried to defend those in MSM who predicted our team’s demise because they were just trying to make a prediction, but Woody, even having given a mea culpa is way out of line. It’s obvious to me that the coach had the audacity to call him out and now he is being a crybaby about it.

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of his typically. He has his moments and today was one of them. I liked the way he used an article about the team’s intelligence to highlight his lack thereof.
Nice work

The highlight of that article for me was not the article
but the comments. Looks like a coupla MHR readers snuck over there to remind him that a winning record was not something that nobody could have seen coming. : )
We should send the DP editor some links to some of the midsummer analysis from this site, and ask him why his veteran columnists couldn’t see what we saw. It’s not the uncertainty I fault Dave and Woody for — its the ostentatiousness with which they served up their uninformed opinion. If they don’t have the pulse of the team during one of its most important transitions in history, what in the world is the DP paying them for??

I saw a feeding frenzy of Bronze Whalers once. Quite a sight. The memory reminds me of ferocity that the media went at The Fixer all summer long. Question after question. Column after column.

Maybe someone can help me here?
The Broncos have three new veteran starters in the secondary playing around Bailey, and they have been impressed with his ability to play so well despite utilizing terrible technique. Most players wouldn’t be able to get away with it, but it’s clear that he still has enough natural talent to overcome his tendency to position himself poorly in coverage
I thought Bailey often positions himself the way he does because he has such natural talent as it helps to temp the quarterback to throw his way?

Precisely...
Bailey is a consumate technician he simply chooses to use an unorthodox technique that few can utilize. His closing speed allows him to “bait” qb’s to throw his way (see Dallas).

And I will admit here that I was wrong too.
I have been one of the biggest cheerleaders of this team all year and I was wrong too. I figured we were looking at an 8-8 team. Better in all aspects but I really thought the roster turnover and the new system, etc would make it hard for them to compete early in the year.

Don't worry
I said 9-7 as well, and that I’d be thrilled if we got there and competed with SD next year. Clearly McDaniels isn’t playing to meet any of the predictions on this site. Except maybe Mike Clark’s. ; )

Gumption
“Raiders in the playoffs”, nice! If that happened, the AFC should fold.

at this rate they'd have to make it in as a wild card
if THAT happens, the entire AFC is in trouble.

Interesting piece on the 10 draft
in that last link you listed. (And thanks as always for this post, of course.)
Boise State is getting a lot of attention for becoming a football power, but less attention has been paid to CB Kyle Wilson. NFL scouts have the opposite reaction, being far more interested in Wilson’s NFL potential than the team’s success.
To challenge big receivers, many NFL teams have been shying away from short cornerbacks, but those with elite athleticism and playmaking ability still get their due. Wilson (5-9 1/4, 185) has been compared to Alphonso Smith, a ’09 second-round pick by Denver, in terms of his athleticism, instincts, competitiveness and playmaking ability.
Wilson also is a dangerous punt and kickoff returner, which adds to his value. Wilson, despite his height, also could go in the second round in April.

Lol
Once again the immutable law has resurfaced. The great Catch 22: “Denver isn’t that good unless it beats a good team but if Denver beats a good team they must not have been good. After all, Denver beat them.”
I look no further than the Week 7 Cheat Sheet on Fox Sports where it is being said that the Chargers will lose to KC. Hey, a week ago the Chargers were a super talented team just needing to put the pedal to the metal. Now they couldn’t beat a one win wonder.
No matter how much praise Denver gets there is still little respect.

and my favorite..
“NE is a very good team having just beaten the Ravens” oh wait “Brady just isn’t playing well this year, the Bronco’s beat em” and now they’ve mysteriously regained their championship form in just one week just look how they destroyed the Titans. it’s truly laughable !

How many different “What’s Wrong with Brady” articles mysteriously transformed to “Brady’s Back!”
The real headline it “Denver Defense Dominates League’s Premiere Offenses.”

you know
i’m not one to make wild predictions, but if I had a few extra G’s this week, i might just put them on KC coming off a win and SD coming off all bluster performance and suddenly facing an identity crisis.

It is Possible
Still my point is mostly in regards to perception and viewpoint rather than the facts. The teaser on foxsports.com says it all “Shame On you,” implying the Chargers should be ashamed of losing to an undefeated team.

There is some talk that losing to Denver on Monday night crushed the Dolts. You should read their blogs and news papers… It’ s a mess, and one that totally blindsided them, their media and their fans. They really thought they had a Super Bowl team and would runaway with the AFC West and home field advantage.
Of all the teams and people surprised by Denver, It would appear San Diego is taking it the hardest. So if the Monday night game was a realization of a changing of the guard in the AFC West, you may see a real let down in KC.
This is my favorite website.

Don't Get Me Wrong
I think KC is better than advertised because they are tougher. I also feel San Diego is far worse than advertised.
I just find the continual trend regarding the Broncos interesting. Regardless of the realities of the situation.

it's an excellent point Kf
Those hacks are annoying. Fortunately, it’s not something that impacts how the team feels about itself. I love that they are stacking up one impressive win after another, and the first thing out of any of their mouths is how they still need to improve. The sky is the limit.
By the way, anyone notice how Orton’s phrases are sometimes carbon copy’s of McDaniels’? That’s respect and buy in from your QB when they are borrowing your responses word-for-word.

Purdy's article on Cable was interesting
He made a good point here:
It is appalling that so far Goodell has taken a hands-off approach to the case, claiming he is waiting to see what the Napa authorities discover and decide.
That’s no excuse. In the past, invoking the NFL’s code of conduct, Goodell has suspended many players for on-field fights before any legal convictions. Goodell also could lower the boom here with a stern probe and action — unless he’s just wary of the league getting involved in another annoying Raiders mess that might involve a lawsuit.
If that’s the case, shame on the commissioner.
So where’s the Mighty Goodell Hammer Of Justice in this case, hmmm? Apparently, the rules for coaches and players are different.
What bs- shame on Goodell indeed.

Thanks Doug and good work.
Really enjoyed to the Krieger article. The following quote says alot about the guys McDaniels has brought in.
“I think one of the biggest keys to our success in the second half, not only have we been in good condition and been able to play hard for 60 minutes, but we have smart players that you can actually tell them something at halftime and not practice it and then go out there and execute it.

From Josh's Bye-Week Presser
Question: What is it about Kyle’s style that fits your style and philosophies; why has this been such a good fit?
Josh: I don’t think there’s one specific type of quarterback that fits our system. I think the quarterback has to be smart, he has to understand what we’re asking him to do – which is a lot, we ask him to really know the defense each week, we ask him to do a considerable amount of the running game, be accurate, take care of the football, finish drives in the redzone, get it to the guys we think need to have it.
Are there a lot of players that probably could do that? Probably. Are we really happy with Kyle? Yeah, because Kyle does those things. He is smart, he takes care of the football, he reads defenses, he’s learning more and more every week, he does a great job with the running game – did another great job the other night getting us into the right play…things that go unnoticed. Just a guy who can get you into some good plays, get the ball to good players, takes care of it, and when he’s had to make big plays, he’s come through and he’s made them. I think a quarterback ultimately gets judged by that and wins and losses. So Kyle has obviously done a nice job so far.

You mean we don’t ask him to focus on his own players first, hand off 30% of the time, throw lasers, accept interceptions as part of the game, esp. in the red zone, and lock on 15??
That’s revolutionary! : )

The more I see Josh’s team in action, and hear his discussions on what he considers important, the more I’m convinced it never would have worked between Jay and Josh, as I’m sure they both came to realize very quickly.

One interesting fact
that I hadn’t realized up til now and comes from the link to Brian Horwell’s "Surprise! The Broncos are good.
“So far, no team the Broncos have played has rushed for 100 yards. The Broncos are the only team in the league that has held every opponent under 100.
That’s impressive, considering four of the six teams the Broncos have played average more than 100 yards per game on the ground — Dallas (161.0), New England (116.3), Cincinnati (113.2) and Cleveland (103.7)."
