Shanahan's new gig?

So, we heard the report that Shanahan was offered the Washington Redskins job this week which he turned down. Shanahan is watching more film now then when he was coaching, and trying to learn all he can about being a better coach. He has said that he wanted to take this year off, and when asked if he will coach again he mentioned holding a sign that said "Will coach for food". Come next year, Shanny will be chomping at the bit to coach, and teams will be chomping harder to get him.

I think that the main consensus is that Shanahan will be coaching the Cowboys next year. Wade Phillips is in the last year of his contract and he clearly can't get anything done with a very talented Dallas squad. But there are still a few teams that should be interested.

The San Diego Chargers are in a similar state as the Cowboys. Lots of talent, nothing to show for it. If the Bolts keep losing, then Norv Turner's seat will only get hotter. And as to my knowledge, Shanny doesn't have any beefs with San Diego like he does with Oakland.

The Washington Redskins obviously are interested in him after contacting him about the job. It will be interesting to see if/when Jim Zorn is fired if a interim coach will take over and assume the reins next season, or if they will approach Shanahan again.

The Buffalo Bills are showing impatience with Dick Juaron, well, the fans are anyways with this billboard

The Panthers haven't really inspired fear in anyone lately. And if John Fox can only beat poor teams like Washington and Tampa Bay, he might get the boot by season's end.

The Broncos cut ties with Shanahan who was the longest tenured coach in the NFL at the time. Now, the Titans may have to consider doing the same. With an 0-6 record, the Titans scheme's might have grown a little stale. (And wearing your rivals jersey can't really help matters either.)

The Browns might want to consider cutting their losses with Eric Mangini. Four years into his head coaching career and he is one of, if not the most loathed head coach in the game.

I concur, I think the Shanahan/Jones relationship will be workable for Shanahan

Jerry Jones is not a penny pincher and he is not reluctant to pay the going rate for veterans, which is Shanny’s MO.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

You could be right about Dallas but it’s hard to see Shanny really getting along with an owner like Jerry Jones who is more hands on than any owner in the league. Although a division rival, San Diego would be a good scenario for Shanny but ownership would have can AJ Smith first.

Shanahan in Washington

What I read is that he turned down the offer to take over in midseason because – well, it’s mid-season. But he kept the door open. So we know Snyder is interested, and after his experience with a rookie HC, I bet he throws big bucks at Shanahan.

He should be watching a lot

Not so much for tactics, but to see how all the new players are so much better than his. But then, all the coaches in the league should be watching and saying, why didn’t we grab those guys (Dawkins, Goodman, Hill, Fields, Davis). Bloody amazing that they were just sitting there for McD to grab.

Dallas

Realisitically, it would take for Wade to accept a demotion to DC for the ’Boys to have an optimal situation. Jerry wants to maintain his position as owner / GM and Mike would have to do something unexpected – assume the role of the HC.

At best, he could take on offensive playcalling duties in addition to all that comes with being the HC, but that is the absolute best case scenario for Dallas fans.

In my opinion, there is less than a 50/50 chance of this panning out.

Mike could remain stubborn and expect to hold the same positions with a new team as he had in Denver, which are GM / HC. If that’s the case, I don’t see him going to either Dallas or San Diego. I heard (not sure, but Charger fans were certain that) AJ likes Mike, but what are the odds he’d curb his meddling with the team, even if Mike is the HC?

I see no one mentioned Chicago. If they implode this year, is it that much of a reach to say that Lovie’s job could be in jeopardy? Anyone smell a slight chance of a BlueJay – Shanny reunion? Just saying it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

by Flying Dutchman on Oct 22, 2009 5:34 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

How about

Since he is still making $7 million a year from the Broncos they have him come in and script the 1st 20 plays for McD this year. With the offensive starts he always got and the offensive finishes McD gets this team would be putting up 40 points a game.

It isn't the plays...

The offense is just plain starting slowly, whether it be penalties, drops, missed throws whatever.

We had two drive killing penalties...

from Marshall and Moreno. Unsportsmanlike. Marshall just needed to be more patient because he got the call, but it was negated cuz of the kicked ball. And Moreno, kinda got screwed cuz he threw the ball at Merriman, but that kind of stuff happens in the piles after plays. Coulda had more points there.

We are forgetting an obvious choice

DaBears. After Cutler gets another coach fired, Shanahan will come in a and hitch his horse to JC. He doesn’t need the draft choices anyway.

by ocbroncomaniac on Oct 22, 2009 6:28 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

This is simply my opinion.

Shanahan probably won’t go to Dallas. As TD4HOF stated above, Jerry Jones is the Cowboy’s GM. For Shanny to wind up in Dallas there would have to be a lot of give from one side or the other… and both being control freaks, it’s not likely to happen.

The situation in San Diego is better, but not by much. G.M. A.J. Smith won’t share his duties with anyone. He would likely have to follow Norv out the door before ownership could bring Shanahan in.

Washington also has a meddling owner that holds the G.M. position. I’m not sure if Dan Snyder thinks he can talk Shanahan into wearing only one hat (coaching) or what, but it’s about the same deal as Dallas. One or both sides would have to give up a lot.

Titans owner, Bud Adams, has admitted to needing change, but also said that Fisher would be safe in his job… although one has to wonder if the flap about the Manning jersey would upset him enough to change his mind.

I guess we’ll see.

See a lot of different things here

some questions I have:

-given the success Denver is having now with a coach AND GM not a coach/gm do we know for certain He would require the GM hat as part of the gig? Maybe he was humbled a bit by this.

-Shannahan has spent a year watching tons of film and re working his ideas of offense. How do we know what he is going to want in a QB or even offense for that matter?

judging a coach who has spent time out of coaching and lots of time in the film room on his past record is a lot like judging the Broncos this year based on previous years. Worthless.

I think he will come in be very sought after and hopefully he doesnt end up in OUR division. Personal thought is he may show up in Jacksonville!

I agree with Jon

I think Mike is smart enough to look back on his last 4 years with us and see that he was, without a doubt, spread too thin to be truly competitive with the rest of the league. Going by this, I think he might be willing to accept a job with less responsibility/duties.

Right now, Jerry Jones is the GM of the Cowboys, this is true. But what no one is mentioning is that JJ handed the reigns over to Parcells when he was there… he allowed Parcells to build that team the way he wanted, which accounts for the talent on the roster as it is. I also think JJ might have noticed the decline since Parcells left, and is willing to turn it over to a coach/gm (singular or plural) whom he trusts. I think Jerry, at this point, is willing to either hire a GM along with a new coach, or a coach (like Shanahan) who will gain control of everything.

by aLuffabo on Oct 23, 2009 12:12 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes sense to me Jon

good points. Didn’t Shannahan say once that the Florida HC gig was one he coveted. Going to Jacksonville would certainly put him in the vicinity. Although, I have a hard time thinking he would go to the college ranks

by bchiper on Oct 23, 2009 9:29 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this too.

(other than the Jacksonville part) :)

It’s presumptuous to assume he will simply HAVE to have large GM duties, as well. Sure, he’ll want some say. Most head coaches do, correct?

I’m afraid he’s going to the Chargers. I could see AJ and he being willing to share powers. But, I’d be more concerned with Shanny the coach than I would be Shanny and AJ the personnel evaluators.

Also, might we be overlooking the Chiefs? I know Haley is only one year into it but things seem to be a mess there. Shanny the coach coupled with Pioli the GM? Could be a scary combo.

It’s presumptuous to assume he will simply HAVE to have large GM duties, as well. Sure, he’ll want some say. Most head coaches do, correct?

He was both coach and GM here. It’s a logical extension of that that he’d want the same responsibilities/control anywhere else. I don’t think it’s a question of him ‘wanting some say’ like “most head coaches” because most of them don’t fill both positions.

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

gone on record saying he wanted to get romo before the cowboys signed him from FA? something to that effect . He has a qb he likes, a gm though not as level headed as bowlen is like bowlen in that he will spend money to better the team.

my vote is for dallas, I dont think he will be as vindictive against us as he was with oakland and sign with SD, he and bowlen were good friends, so i dont see him going to the dark side on this one

He will want to sign Kuper, Sheffler and Doom. I think we will Get Marshall done and won’t let shanny big on him.

He gets to be an hour away from UF, he gets sun and sand, and he gets the city and team at his fingertips (might get more than just coaching control here). Jax is going to need some energy and excitement, they need to make a splash. Plus the Broncos come to town next year, and I’m going, so I’d love to see the matchup.

I think

it will be Washington. Dan Snyder just wants to win, and he doesn’t mind paying for it. Jerry Jones micromanages too much for Shanny to deal with. The Bills are a small market team and Ralph Wilson pinches his pennies. The Chargers were stupid to get rid of Marty, so they would flub up a deal with Shanhan. Fisher isn’t going anywhere with Tennessee, and they won’t get rid of him either.

Agreed.

While I love the irony of Shanahan replacing Phillips twice (heh), I think Washington is probably the better fit – big enough market to have some spending money, but yet not as hype-filled as a move to Dallas would be.

And yeah, I’d rather not see him in San Diego, if only because it would give Charger fans something to flaunt against us. Though it would be fun to see him rip apart the Raiders some more…

There's a couple schools of thought with this...

First off, let’s consider 3 things. Before anyone attacks me for being against Shanahan, just hear me out.

1. Mike Shanahan is known as an offensive, HoF shoe-in genius. Most of his successes, in my opinion, came on the coat-tails of other coaches before him, and the ones that were around him. Yes, he is the one that put most of those coaches into the jobs they were in, but his ability to coach the game is very, very predictable. Shanahan’s most successful season (97 and 98 aside) was 2005. The coordinators: Gary Kubiak and Larry Coyer. Kubes took a head coaching job in 06, and look what happened to the offense after that. Coyer left after 2006 and look what happened to our defense after that. I’m not doubting Shanahan’s success as a head coach, but a large part of his success was a result of the people around him doing well, not him. I believe that wholeheartedly.

2. His talent evaluation skills were the epitome of hit and miss. His 2008 draft was solid, top to bottom. Carlton Powell and Ryan Torain are the two question marks in my mind, but otherwise, it was a great draft year. His 2003 draft was the textbook definition of fail. The one notable name on the 03 draft list was Quentin Griffin, and he only played 2 years. The 03 draft, while not full of talent, had very notable names. Do the names Carson Palmer, Andre Johnson, Terrell Suggs, Troy Palamalu, Dallas Clark or Nnamdi Asomugha ring a bell? Those players were all drafted in the first round, along with Shanny’s pick: George Foster. Oh, by the way, Foster’s started 3 games last year in Detroit and was cut from Cleveland this year and has yet to find another job in the NFL. So much for building through the draft.

3. The favorites game. This one can’t be changed, in my opinion. We all saw how he guarded specific players and left others out to dry. Champ Bailey said it best in the summer, “We were like second class citizens”. So that’s how you coach your team is it? One side is more important than the other? One side is full of “second class citizens”? Anyone who denies that Shanahan didn’t play favorites wasn’t paying attention.

Oh, and a little fun side fact. Of 62 players drafted to the Broncos between 1999 and 2005, only 2 remain with the team: DJ Williams, and Ben Hamilton. So tell me, where is the concept of building through the draft?

huh?

Calijoe, everyone from our ‘04? ’05? class besides Cutler remains with us today. That includes Ben, DJ, Doom, Scheff, Kuper, B-Marsh, et al. IMO his drafting/scouting really, really improved in the last few years. Keep in mind too that GMing isn’t just about the draft—the monster trade that brought bailey here was clutch. I do agree that the early post-Elway era was piss poor in development (come on, where are the Rod Smiths, Shannon Sharpes, and TDs out there in later rounds!?). I mean, Griese to replace Elway? Wow, just wow

OK, I heard you out. Can’t wait to see you see you rip McD when he moves on. Talk about disrespecting former Broncos. My memory is a little fuzzy right now, how many super bowl’s did Reeves and Phillips win before this coat-tail slacker came on? Trying to remember how many super bowls that genius boy Kubiak has won since he left Denver.
HIs drafts were hit and miss? Shocking news there. Please detail a coach/teams drafts that are not hit and miss. Please give some examples of other head coaches/teams that won multiple super bowls, then lost a a hall of fame qb and never hit rock bottom. I am sure that drafting late in the round year after year for a decade had zero impact on his draft results? Right? Maybe compare Broncos drafts since 2006 to Patriots since 2006 and tell me who did a better job.
So do you believe that a large part of Bill Belichick’s success is not due to people around him doing well? I would think McD would like a word with you.
I thought it was time to move on from Shanahan but that group of Bronco fans that have no respect for what he accomplished here frustrates me. Elway going down a champion would not have happened if Bowlen did not hire Shanahan and that is a fact. Every Bronco fan should be thankful to Bowlen for hiring Shanahan and for Shanahan doing the job he did when he was here.

There are legitimate concerns with Shanny’s recent staffing decisions, but his recent drafts were way above average. Yes, I am still holding out hope for the development and impact of Jarvis Moss, plus a lot of other teams would have also drafted Moss in the first round.

Shanny had some horrible drafting years, but the last three have been more good than bad, at least talent evaluation-wise. I did however greatly disagree with his hiring of coaching and other personnel. There was reportedly a lot of nepotism going on and obviously the results showed

I'm not discrediting what Shanahan did as a head coach early on in his career.

But in a game of “What have you done for me lately”, I can’t say Shanahan did anything for me “lately”. I may be one of the minority here, but the team Shanahan put on the field the past 3 years was a pitiful group. They had talent, but the drive to do better simply wasn’t there. As far as I’m concerned, if you make your players hate life, then you’re not much good as a coach. It doesn’t matter how many damn games you win.

Maybe nothing for you

But he has done plenty for me. Clady, Harris and the rest of the o-line, all of the tight ends and receivers minus gaffney. Champ, Doom and DJ. Without those guys McD would not be able to add pieces to put the team together that he did. In fact, without those guys Denver would have spent the offseason trolling for lesser coaches than they ended up with (Denver was considered best opening out there). Your original post did not just focus on the last 3 years, you basically tried to discredit his entire tenure here. “Most of his success came because of other coaches”.
I guess I differ from you in another area. My enjoyment from the team is derived from the games they win. My focus is not on the players happiness but to each their own…

One losing season...

in 14 years. Right? Face it, we’ve been babied. We’ve been an elite team in this league since the mid-’90s (despite the failure of the MSM/coastal bias to acknowledge this fact). I would much rather have Shanny at the helm than Norv et al.

That being said, it was obvious that his job-security had granted him a level of comfort that he slipped into stagnation and stopped ‘masterminding’ good offenses. Best example of this? Once Cutler was starting he took his running game for granted and (injuries aside, this started before last year) it dropped off the face of the earth. We haven’t had a 1000 yd rusher in the last two years. It worked so well with Plummer here because Shanny never trusted him and so stuck to the running game. If Shanny had that same feeling toward Cutler (given his decisions and propensity for red-zone ints, he should have) our offense would’ve been much more balanced last year, and our D would’ve benefited from that fact (run game=more time off the field).

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

by Drizzt396 on Oct 23, 2009 3:18 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only thing last year's D would have benefitted from would have been a severe case of amnesia

“our offense would’ve been much more balanced last year, and our D would’ve benefited from that fact (run game=more time off the field)”

Actually, most of last year’s D is getting lots of time off the field, especially as the rest of the league realizes that the Denver castoffs truly needed to get voted off the island.

Shanny, like all successful people, will work for 2 things: power and money. The Glazers will give him those things and will not meddle, which is more than can be said for the top 2 options (Washington and Dallas).

He will bring in Slowik as DC and Kyle Shanahan as OC. The funny thing is, he gets to fire Jim Bates again.

This is interesting.

I thought Morris was a strange move for Tampa at the time, and I’m feeling more strongly about that now that they’re 0-6.

Bringing in Shanahan would be an instant return to credibility, if not necessarily instant success (I think the Bucs need more than just a new coach to get better).

Thanks for another fantastic season...here's to Rocktober 2010!

You're right...

they need to be acquiring more big-name free agents. Any time you’re $40 mil under the cap coaching is probably the least of your worries…

Huh? They’re like $40 mil under the cap because they’re so cheap. Shanny would never work in a place that wouldn’t let him spend all his cap money no matter how much they paid him.

Salary cap

I don’t know if they are $40M under the cap (that seems to be high). However, I do agree that their salary spend is low right now. Perhaps they are clearing out the roster for bigger spendings in the future.

The Glazers sent all those draft picks to Oakland and gave Gruden a big contract and all the power. So, historically, they’ve been open to doing whatever it takes to get the coach they want.
