Horse Tracks 10/23/09 - Raiders coach Cable will not face charges in Hanson case

Fun fact of the day: The 2009 Broncos have forced 12 turnovers on defense through 6 games. With their next takeaway, they will match the total of the 2008 Broncos' defense.

Lots to read.
On the Tom Cable issue. I read it on NFL fanhouse here’s a comment by one of the posters
Aztecsfan said…
“This conclusion is supported by the statements of independent witnesses present in the room, including and especially the coach who bumped into Mr. Hanson’s chair.”
“Independent witnesses”? WTF? The only witnesses there are the Raiders coaching staff. And I highly doubt they’re going to squeal on their head coach if they want to keep their job. There were no independent witnesses.
This case has been a total crock from the beginning. Not only did this guy get assaulted, but now he’ll probably never work in football again. On top of that, since Tom Cable got away with beating the crap out of his staff, he will more than likely use this as an intimidation tactic the next time he has issues with a member of his staff.
I think this says it all.

I have to agree
I think that this has been a travesty of justice. I cannot stop thinking of Cable as a thug, and I don’t think that is likely to change.

Am I missing something here?
Tom Cable has the talent of a Jr. Varsity D-line coach and the temperament of a 14 year old girl.
I’m thrilled he was not charged with a crime because I couldn’t ask for the Raiders to employee a more incompetent person as their head coach. I very much hope Cable remains on Oakland’s sideline for long long time.

While I agree with McG,
I think that as long as The Crypt Keeper is making the decisions, it doesn’t really matter who’s coaching. Besides, with the way he’s treated them, what quality head coaching candidate would want to work for him anyway?

Jon Gruden was very successful there earlier this decade. If not for a terrible call that went against them in Tuck Rule snow game, the Raiders may have won a Super Bowl.
I think a real NFL coach would make a big difference for them. So as long as they keep going the Art Shell, Tom Cable route, they will be horrible and I’ll laugh at them.

Sure he was
But there was a lot more talent back then relative to now; plus, that was a LONG time ago. When you look at the current roster, it’s not like you think to yourself, “This team would be a lot better with quality coaching.” Davis has been a bit crazy for longer than I’ve been a fan. But in recent years he’s just been making piles of terrible decisions.
Going forward, I don’t think it matters who is coaching the Raiders, unless Al hires a legit GM. I don’t see that happening, either.

The way Al Davis does things, McG, I think we'll be seeing Tom Cable for a while.
Seems to me that this sort of behavior is right up the Zombie Owner’s alley.
Throw in the fact that Cable is a sycophant of the highest order, and that they just (somehow) beat the Eagles to get to 90% of their season win total already, and I think Cable will be around for a while.

Just listened to the KO interview.
Very good stuff. Besides the usual banter, there were a couple of things that really stood out to me, and they both go to show how classy our QB is:
- When asked for his thoughts on the Jay Cutler deal, KO took the high road instead of disparaging the Bears organization or JC.
- When asked about playing in the shadow of John Elway, he gave what I thought was the perfect answer. He basically stated that he doesn’t try to do the things that Elway did, but that he just wants to win as many games as possible. Again, nothing but respect for Elway, but also just a sense of contentment with his role on the team.
Thanks to nyc (can I still call you that?) and JeffG for the link, and as always thanks for doing all of the legwork for us!

The stories on Orton vs Culter
From the Chicago media are interesting to me.
Here’s who you should hate: Anyone who tries to suggest that Orton is a better quarterback than Jay Cutler. Because that’s just wrong.
Guess it depends on your definition of “better”. If you mean “raw skills and potential” then that’s true. If you’re talking about wins in the NFL, well….
The writer talks about all this “hatred” from the Bears fans towards Orton. I don’t think it’s hatred- really, what I think he’s talking about is the sense of unease that comes from Bears fans, whom apparently are just starting to perhaps entertain the question “Did we make a mistake?”.
What they really hate is the idea that they gave up the farm AND a good QB for a guy that’s perhaps not looking like the World-Beating Savior that they were led to expect. So, you’ve got article like this one, meant to reassure that uneasy fan base that everything still is on track. Lovie & CO, they’ve got it handled- it’s all good.
No pressure Lovie. None whatsoever.
Sure will be interesting to watch it all unfold over the course of the next few years.

I mentioned this on chat during the last radio show
…but think about this: Jay Cutler, as an NFL starting QB, is 20-22. For Kyle Orton to put up a similar NFL record, he’d have to lose 17 straight games.
by JeffG on Oct 23, 2009 10:50 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
The NFL is a team sport. Orton has played on better teams throughout his entire career.
NFL QBs shouldn’t have a W-L record any more than WRs or ILBs.

I think it is a silly argument either way.
Just because a guy lights it up in one program doesn’t mean he would in another. Put Peyton Manning behind that crappy OL in Kansas City and let’s see him win an MVP.
Orton played for a Chicago team that didn’t know how to use him. Now he’s better off. Jay Cutler wanted a new contract and Denver didn’t want to give it to him. Now he’s got it. He’s better off too. Denver also did quite well with the draft picks we snagged in the deal as well.
And most important, Denver is 6-0. I think I will sleep well tonight.
Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

He excelled in NE while Brady was out, after not starting in a game since high school. Now he’s struggling in KC.

Agreed
I think what’s most interesting to me is the unease associated with Orton’s success in Denver, as if it’s somehow a negative indicator of cutler’s future there.
One doesn’t have anything to do with the other, yet they are tied in the mind of some.

Records or not, the statement misses an important point
The idea that a quarterback is simple the sum of his physical potential is absurd, no matter how common it is. Intellect, knowledge of the game, the ability to analyze defenses, decide on the best plays, hold on to the ball and to make decisions on the fly are every bit as important.
I try to stay out of this one in general. I don’t really care about Cutler, other than the effect that his performance has on our draft pick. I even wish him well, but this debate gets tedious, mainly because of all it ignores. While folks are waiting for a QB to win that mystical ‘big one’, the one in which he ‘puts a game on his back’ they might miss the number of games that are lost and the opportunities wasted by INTs, fumbles, mental errors and failures to adapt certain plays to maximize the effectiveness of the running game, just to name a few (a very few).
Whether we like it or not, one way that QBs and head coaches are judged is by wins and losses. The issues that I’ve listed are examples of why that is true for the QBs. It’s not an argument for what should or shouldn’t be, which is beyond my area of concern, but a partial explanation for what is.

Anyone who has watched both the Bears and the Broncos this year realizes how silly this is; does anyone think the Bears would be better, or the Broncos worse, if the roles were reversed?
Um…yes. Me. Not even considering the trade, just saying if Orton were on the Bears and Cutler were on the Broncos, I think the Broncos would be worse. They would probably have about 1.5 more turnovers per game, which (with all other things being equal, which really, they would not, but anyways were pretending) would place us in a negative turnover differential and IMO would have equaled some losses.
Now, would the Bears be better? I don’t know. I think the Bears’ coaching is pretty bad, so they might be in about the same situation they are now. I would guess they would have less turnovers (besides interceptions, Cutler has had 5 fumbles, lost one this year), but the play calling of Chicago seems to just crush the will off all offensive Bears (see Matt Forte), so I think perhaps the Bears would be in a similar situation.

I almost mentioned the picks because, once you throw them in I think it should be clear to anyone rational that we got the better end of the deal. I was merely trying to evaluate his statement “if the roles were reversed” without anyone being able to claim “well he was just talking about Cutler vs. Orton”.
but I whole-heartedly agree with you.

According to Tom Waddle...
Denver traded Jay Cutler and a 5th rd pick for Kyle Orton. Now that Orton is playing well everyone seems to be forgetting about the two 1’s and a 3 that we got. When I was reading that article I that Waddle was an idiot for not mentioning those picks, but then he has the audacity to mention the 5th that we threw in…what a joke.

Johnny Knox was a nice pickup for them,
But the fact that we have 2 firsts and a 3rd plus Orton for Cutler and a 5th is kind of important to the whole thing. Although I can be a picky sum….
