God Bless Mr. Bowlen

There was a time when the Phipps family was ready to give up the Broncos in the early 1980s. From historical accounts I have found online in various places, this could have meant the Broncos going to such places as Houston or Atlanta.

Thankfully, at the last moment, a hero who grew up in the vast oil fields of western Canada, came in and snatched the Broncos from a new location and instantaneously made them one of the NFL's best organizations, not that they were that bad before.

The year was 1984 and Pat Bowlen's efforts speak for themselves. Since his purchase of the franchise, we have been to five of our six Super Bowl appearances and we have seen the likes of John Elway, Shannon Sharpe, Ed McCaffrey, Steve Atwater and numerous others who belong in the Hall of Fame waltz through the doors.

Perhaps some of you did not know this, but for all the flack we get in the media for being a "horrible" franchise from the MSM, we have been no worse than 5-11 in 1990. In that same year, the media's main crush, the Patriots, were 1-15. Just something to think about.

Since 1984, the Broncos have won 239 out of 394 games or 61 percent. Thus, Mr. Bowlen's record speaks for itself and more often than not, he makes the right call.

I was discouraged in the offseason, not necessarily because I doubted things would work out well, but with the flack Mr. Bowlen was taking . With the high character and camaraderie the Broncos possess, they're playing well, just as I thought they would but in the MSM's potshots, many of them were unfairly aimed at management.

Even though he knew it was the right call to trade Jay Cutler in all of his bewitching, yet exasperating aura, he still drafted a letter to we denizens of Bronco Country that he was sorry Cutler dictated that this be the way things would go.

However, this was not a mistake on our owner's part to let Cutler go. He knew McDaniels was the right man to lead our Broncos and he knew that with the likes of Brian Dawkins, Kyle Orton and Renaldo Hill coming via free agency interspersed with great holdovers such as Ryan Clady, Eddie Royal and Elvis Dumervil that we would excel.

Therefore, while it's well and good for our MSM friend, Jim Rome, to say everyone owes McDaniels and Orton apologies (except for those of us who have always been believers, you know who you are),  everyone should be sorry they doubted Mr. Bowlen.

I expect that after our mid-season recess, we'll resume our excellence and amass more victories but don't forget, fellow Broncos fans, the impetus of our success is Pat Bowlen. It was nice to see him soaking it all in at San Diego Monday evening.

Finally, in closing, since I'm Mormon, I don't drink alcohol, but I will buy Mr. Bowlen any soft drink he wants if I ever meet him. God Bless you Mr. Bowlen!

I too don't drink alcohol

Buy him a second soft drink for me, a fellow Mormon. I have a ton of respect for Mr. Bowlen. He never let what was being said in the MSM worry him. I think he knew what he had and he went with the feeling. He truely is an amazing man. I don’t think we as fans ever, ever give him enough thanks and credit for the success of our team. Even tho it is his team he has given us the opportunity to call it our team.

Thankyou Mr. Bowlen your decisions have given us the fans the greatest team in the NFL to root for. You have my respect and best wishes for continued good health and strength.

Excellent post, Brad

Bowlen has been a standup guy throughout his ownership of the team. Few other franchises have such owners and we’re very lucky ours has the “huevos” to do what has to be done!

A round of Kool Aid for my friends, and one more for me!

Thanks and rec’d.

Nothing says class like an owner who holds up the lombardi

and says “this trophy is dedicated to the one man who worked his butt of for 15 years to ensure this success.”

Always been a supporter of the Bowlen Man he knows his stuff

I don't drink any longer

Cirrhosis of the Liver does that to a person, but I will share my Dr. Pepper with him or pour him a glass of Kool – Aid anytime.

To Pat!

Well, I’m an Irishman. So as I’m sure you can guess, I do drink. In fact, I raise many(many many) a glass to Mr. Bowlen’s broncos every sunday, and hope to until the day I die(or, in the likely event Mr. Bowlen passes before I do, as I am but 28, I hope to one day raise my glass to Mr. Elway’s Broncos!) :)~

This is not correct
There was a time when the Phipps family was ready to give up the Broncos in the early 1980s.

The Phipps brothers (Gerald and Alan) ran into financial difficulties with theBroncos in the mid-sixties, but when the City passed a bond bill to finance the expansion of Mile High Stadium, the crisis passed. The Phipps brothers had been looking to sell the Broncos, and any new owners might well have moved the team. But by the late 60’s the franchise was financially stable due to the increased revenues not only from the larger stadium but also from increased TV revenues as the NFL gained in popularity.
In the late 70’s, the Phipps brothers, due to declining health, sold the Broncos to Edgar Kaiser. Kaiser sold it to Bowlen in the early 80’s.

Thanks Bradley

I forgot about Edgar Kaiser, but I have looked at more historical records in the interim and you are correct. Of course, it cannot be refuted that Mr. Bowlen makes us what we are: the best organization in the NFL!

Spot on Point

Brad…you are right about 99.9% of the Bronco nation doubted what Pat Bowlen had done. WHAT!! Fire Mike Shanahan. WHAT!! Hire an offensive minded coach when we had a very good offense (we thought) and a deploreable defense. WHAT!! you let kid coach fire cutler aid Jeremy Bates. WHAT!! you agree with kid coach on trading cutler.

The Bronco nation came down hard on Mr. Bowlen and Mr. McDaniels with all sorts of sophomoric takes on their names. The main stream media (MSM) took the organization into wraths of verbage that spelled rebuilding for a decade.

And all this time, the organization did not fire back with ‘we know what we are doing’ but instead allowed Coach McDaniels to quitely (wink) put together HIS staff and players. He made one quote of Bill Parsells part of the mantra ‘if you want me to cook, let me buy the groceries’. His defensive coaches are specific to the schems he wanted to play. He then allowed his coaches to evaluate and then pick players they wanted. And if you all will remember, that all bloggers posted comments like ‘he is too old and washed up’ or ‘where are the name players to build around’

Well we were all wrong. It seems like this organization knew more than we did. Go figure. My last comment is that I spent 8 years in the Broncos Quarterback club and got a chance to listen to Pat Bowlen comment on many issues. He is a very smart business man and I for one am not surprised that he picked the right man to lead his team. Twice he has been right.

Once he was semi-wrong with the Wademeister...

I saw semi because Shanahan Inherited a well stocked Wade Phillips team with the likes of Rod Smith and Shannon Sharpe
