WHAT IF WE LOSE: a disturbing thought I should keep to myself

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!

Lesko_medium

Okay, this may not be so horrifying given the amazing start we're off to this year compared to where many of us thought we'd be, but consider this scenario.

One could argue that we may be on the verge of facing two of the toughest teams we'll see all year.  I know there are prognostications both ways, and people are feeling good right now, and I don't want to rock the boat because what I'm about to suggest probably won't happen, BUT

What if we lose those two games?  And the Dolts beat the Cassel-led Chefs, the playoff bound Faders (i hurt myself laughing whenever i say that), and (somehow) the G-men who I suspect are softer than most are giving them credit for.  Are we suddenly in a dog fight again?

How good is that road victory in Sandy Eggo looking now?  Good.  But we have to repeat it at home in a few weeks if we want to secure our position as a true contender.

I'm confident we will.  This team overlooks no one and is very hard to game plan for.  I'm not trying to jinx the magic.  All I'm saying is that before we get too drunk on all the SuperBowl contender talk, we should keep in mind that this is a week-by-week process and the landscape can change completely after just a few Any Given Sundays.  We're gonna lose some football games.  Things will get interesting.  But we can have faith in these men.  They've proved that.

Enjoy 6-0 this week.  But stay diligent, Coach.  Stay tough, Broncos.  Stay passionate, fans.

Stay honest.

And DO YOUR JOB.

PS

I’m actually feeling that KC has a decent chance to put SD out of their misery. We’ll see.

that would make the bye week worthwhile

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

it feels weird rooting for KC

But I guess it balances out with rooting against SD. If KC wins and Oakland looses (should that even be an if?), the rest of the AFC West teams will all be sitting at two wins apiece, to our six. Now that would just be tasty right there!

don't think of it as rooting for KC

Think of it as rooting against SD more. ; )

That would seal the deal

We could use that KC win this weekend. But I think we’re gonna see the race tighten up at some point and hopefully we still come out on top. If we beat them in Denver that’s going to be what matters most.

I agree...The Chiefs are getting better...

Would love to see the Chiefs step it up and put the Dolts further into their tailspin

I actually think

the odds are pretty decent the Broncos lose to the Ravens next week, only because the latter is very due, the Broncos are (still) due to lose, it’s at Baltimore, the Ravens are better than 3-3 team, etc. Of course the Broncos have fooled us before. But I don’t plan to worry too much if they go 1 and 2 in their next 3 games. They’re still in good shape, and we can feel confident in knowing they are now clearly the best-coached, most talented and balanced team in the AFC west, with a big lead. So one loss next week won’t freak me out too much. :-)

Also I don’t see San Diego winning their next three.

Flacco impressed me much

in the game against the Vikes. He seems to have the comeback potential of Rivers, that relentless drive not to give up (until he gets that fifth sack and is peepin out his earhole lol). It’s going to be a fight, for sure.

It's the NFL

The old saying…on any given Sunday…well, look at what the Faders did last week. I really don’t buy into ‘we should win this one’ or ‘we should lose this one’ on any game. What I love about this team vs some in the past (witness the Detroit ! yes Detroit shellacking we took a couple of years ago, and KC, and Faders last year – ugh) is that I am certain week in and week out we got a true shot at winning, we’ll be highly competitive. So I might be disappointed in a loss, yes, but I know I’ll be saying well at least we played hard and didn’t roll over. And the next week we’ve got a good shot at another W. I’m keepin’ the faith with this team, no matter what. It’s gonna be a fun ride for a long time.

Couldn’t agree more. Our guys are bringing their lunch pails to work, aren’t they? And B Dawk is bringing an extra side of PAIN in his. ^^

I have been saying this from Week 1

All I want is my team to show up and give it all for sixty+, win or lose I can live with that. It is something I think was sorely missing in recent years.

C'mon 7-0!!!

I agree wholeheartedly, I’ve been trying not to prognosticate the Bronco’s future so that I am not taken by surprise if things don’t work out. This season I’m simply focusing on one more win, every week.

Bye Week

It is too bad that Baltimore also has a BYE week this week. Both teams got robbed of a once-yearly advantage of an extra week of rest before facing their respective opponents. Of course, I guess we both won’t miss the disadvantage of playing someone else following their BYE week. Hmm, maybe this is a good thing?

by conductormann on Oct 24, 2009 11:49 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

interesting point

It sort of mitigates the “facing three opponents coming off their byes” comment we’ve been hearing lately, unless you’re one of those pundits who still thinks B-more has the edge even when given the same amount of time to prepare. Haven’t heard anyone say that, but I can hear them thinking it. ^^

Still, we’re facing two opponents who will have more time to prepare than us. And we’ve already beat one of them! Feels good to be a fan this year!

Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan may have the answers to next Sunday.

He was the Ravens DC from 2002-04 and coached Ray Lewis and Ed Reed so he knows their tendencies and weaknesses. Lewis still an intense player may be feeling age creeping up on him. Reed is still lethal and most QB’s have ventured away from him this year with success. I expect McDaniels/Nolan to have a play plan designed around the Ravens’ weaknesses for there are a few. Should be another test of endurance for our defense and the surehandedness of our offense. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will probably win. Go Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!!

great point bfree

rec’d.

Anyone else noticing how well our coaching staff seems to match up against our schedule this year? Not only did we hire people formerly of each of our division rivals, we have the Pats former OC and the Ravens former DC leading the charge. Considering that division games and AFC powerhouses are the most valuable kind of win you can get, is it any wonder the team is playing well?

A loss or two is fine with me, and here's why.

Once a team gets the loss out of the way, they can focus more easily on each game instead of getting caught up in being undefeated. It is also nice to learn from a loss during the regular season, since a loss in the playoffs is too late.

Frankly, I expect us to have very tough games against INDY and the NYGs. I think we can beat PITT. BAL should be a close game. I think we might sweep KC this year. SD may play harder than the last game, and could be close. We should sweep OAK. We should beat WAS. PHI may be pretty tough.

So true Teach.

Tennessee seemed to be a little cocky when they were 10-0 last year. Now look at them. New England’s 16-0 season was a tremendous feat but they stumbled in the playoffs. Losing a couple in the next few weeks should like you stated refocus their attention at the situation they are in and what could be.

by bfree2bronc on Oct 24, 2009 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're not rooting for us to lose, are you?

KIDDING! I’m KIDDING! ; )

You’re right about Indy, HT, for sure. I’m not sure about the Giants. They have Eli, and a W is a W, but they sure looked beatable to me based on last week’s game. It’s possible that their performance against the Saints belied their true talent. The idea that they might be much tougher than the people they beat (Wash, Tampa, KC, and Oak) is borne out by their convincing wins against those teams — they destroyed the teams they were supposed to destroy. They were pretty evenly matched in that win against Dallas, though, so they still need to prove something to me before I’m putting them up there with Indy.

Then again, we do have a bit of a dark history against the Giants and the Mannings. ; )

I guess I'm not as convinced about Indy either

Don’t get me wrong, you gotta respect Peyton Manning, but they haven’t played a lot of quality teams either. By the scores it looks like Miami and Jacksonville were close games and then they beat Arizona, Seattle and Tennessee who aren’t really the cream of the crop. They haven’t had a hundred yard rusher yet this season, so it seems like they may be a one dimensional team, maybe McDaniels will notice that too.

You got that right and i can't wait to see Doom giving PM a hand after his forth sack.

With no running game Manning will have plenty of trouble trying to light up the sky with our DB’s running back up the field all day. Sorry Mr Wonderful commercial maker your waterloo stops with Denver.

That could definitely mess with his image.

I hear you Big Sky bro

It’s just a personal feeling I have about Indy that probably won’t be healed until we actually do something as bold as beat them in the postseason, or beat them in their own hometown.

Of course, what better time to push past them than this year! After all, a win in Indy could (could) earn us a #1 seed come January. And wouldn’t that be nice!

I'll eat "turkey" with you bm if we lose to the Giants.

I just don’t see it happening since we were victorious against the Cowboys and the Patriots. Also let’s not forget the Super Bowl bound dego chargers. So playing on turkey day might not taste like crow for us, but it sure might leave a bitter after taste in the msm’s mouth.

man sure a lot of fowl being consumed lately

I want some Montana angus. Porterhouse style. ^^

I agree completely that the Giants are probably on par with the Pats… I’m guessing they’re a little better than the efforts we got from the Chargers and the Cowboys.

And a slight confession — I knew the Giants were playing in Denver, I just forgot that was the case this afternoon when I posted. (Had it confused with the Chargers game, which is at Giants Stadium.) So yes, it’s winnable. So I hope we win it. ^^

I'm not rooting for a loss

I would love to see McD do finish what BB couldn’t and run the table but realistically that’s not going to happen. I don’t mind a loss or two or three as long as they’re not consecutive. I want to see how we do after a loss. Does the bubble burst or is it a temporary setback? This is one of the last questions this team needs to answer. We know their good but how they deal with losing we don’t know yet. And our season could depend on the answer to that question.

by T.Dot_Bronco on Oct 24, 2009 4:20 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally

and the whole “reaction to a loss” thing something I’ve been feeling for some time and wish I’d added to this post. Thanks for mentioning it because I did want to add a thought to that.

Consider this: the Broncos have handled plenty of adversity this season. Come from behind wins, clutch plays when we needed them, the doubt of the national media, fans turning on the team, and (through 2008 eyes, anyway) a schedule from hell.

Through that lens, I’m less concerned about their ability to rebound after a loss. Losses will still hurt. But right now, we’re winning the games we should win against the teams that we should be beating. We’re also fortunate enough to have beaten some very good teams in some very challenging circumstances. Each time, the team responded to adversity with resilience and fortitude, especially after making their halftime adjustments. So I just don’t see any quit in them. I believe that if this team goes down, they’ll be fighting all the way. And I don’t expect their attitudes will change any as they prepare for the next game.

Just a thought. Thanks, TDot!

While I'm with you guys about seeing how this team responds to a loss, I wouldn't be entirely against winning out. lol

I certainly don’t believe we will win every game. If we got to about 14-0 or so, I say that McD will rest players. I don’t see coach leaving our guys out there to go for an undefeated season. The broncos team was set up to do damage in the playoffs (tough defense, good run game). We do have a lot of veteran players, too. I think that McD would give them a break going into the playoffs.

I wouldn’t feel worried at all about this team coming off of a loss like that. This team is strong under the helmet, where it counts most.

P.S. I feel so dirty talking about playoffs this early in the season.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Mind games

Was kinda wonder how jedi will keep the team from getting totally fat heads…like they gotta be reading all this stuff bout them now…and there families and stuff are telling them…wow…you guys are awesome. Soooo…since maybe i never played football and can only wonder about getting the guys up for the game. Maybe its who starts to stir things up?

Ravens…dunno…guess that one is on nolan…not sure what he has to prove…cept maybe he has a better defense…and it s a road game…and its after a team has a bye week just like the other team…and wow…how unfair is that…oh…and some of our ex players are there and we have to show them they made bad choices?

Steelers…world champs until they arent…and troy has such pretty hair…and there qb is bing and strong and so hard to bring down…and they are tough guys…and in lots of ways are kinda like us…so…not sure who has the chip on the shoulder.

Giants…what does dawkins think about them…omg…like he will totally beat people up if they arent taking the the practices way serious and jedi doesnt remember…and the giants sorta look like the teams they were running up the score on…kinda think the TEAM is gonna be totally prepared for that game.

oh…yah…and the eagles to…dawkins is soooooooo gonna show them…omg…i feel totally sorry for anyone crossing the middle…wow.

Colts…ummm…jedi totally knows all about them and if anyone can get inside mr perfect’s head…who needs tapes anyway…lol…and some of the broncos are still around (maybe) from all those games where the colts owned the broncos

and the chargers the second time…oh well…we already know all about them now…and there feelings are hurt…and we dont care…and the raiders…giggles…and the chiefs…jedi gets the afc west thng.

Anyway…just sayin (whatever i just said)…rofl
