Horse Tracks 10/26/09 - Broncos lead down to 3 games after Dolts pound Chefs; Jokeland smoked by Jets

Good Morning, MHR Friends! Apparently yesterday was Blowout Sunday, as six games were decided by a margin of 28 points or more - another four games were of margins 10 points or greater. The Dolts dismantled the Chefs and are now 3 games behind the Broncos in the standings. Meanwhile, Jokeland was shut out at home versus the Jets and JaMarcus the Hutt was benched. Meanwhile, Denver's draft position improved another notch with the Bungles' drubbing of the Bears. It's on to Baltimore for the Broncos, who play their first East Coast game of the year on Sunday at 1pm ET.

Thanks nyc!
Noting the first article above. Apparently, PFW isn’t aware of MHR:
“I did not hear anyone sticking up for them when (McDaniels) was getting baptized….they were going to be one-and-done…That’s where the fans and the general public thought they were.”
Um, no, not fans here. But thanks for the words. (n fairness, those were not quotes of the writer himself, but he editorializes down below.) There is this, after all:
“Kyle Orton is a better leader (than Jay Cutler),” one team insider said of Orton, who has a career 18-2 record in home games and has rung up a mind-numbing 142.1 passer rating with a 9-1 TD-interception ratio in the fourth quarters of games so far this season. “He is more mature and smarter. Obviously, Jay was a better athlete.”
We buy that. I’m just curious where that 4th quarter interception came from? Guess he couldn’t have used the word “ratio” if the int count were accurate. Ah, finally, don’t forget, kool-aid drinkers:
But nobody would consider it an incredible development should the wheels suddenly fall off in Denver….
Ah, well, back to earth. Hey, I would consider it an “incredible development”, because the demonstrated coaching and veteran leadership (there’s that word again) won’t let that happen. So, I am expecting Doom and the rest to keep their heads on straight as the accolades rise. Let ‘em pay attention only to what goes on inside the walls at Dove Valley (and occasionally here at MHR), and know that 6-0 still won’t buy you a playoff win. I was an 11-5 guy before the season (with an 8-8 floor), but 13-3 looks to be selling them a little short.
Good week everyone!

The best part of that article
and it is still crazy looking at it:
“The biggest key is that they have only given up 10 points in the second half (as well as only 2-of-35 third-down conversions after halftime) this season,”
2 for 35 is just plain awesome.

Listening to the media talk about football makes my brain hurt
The Jets club the Raiders, and now are obviously for real, despite a 3-game losing street, a shaky rookie quarterback who leads the league in INTs, and last week’s up-chuck vs. the Bills.
The Chargers pasted the Chiefs, so are clearly in the thick of things again. I mean, the Chiefs are now 3-29 in their last 32 (or something like that), so you know that beating them means something.
It’s shocking that the Bengals D plastered the Bears’ offense, since we know the Bears are a physical team that plays smash-mouth football. Egad. The things people say about my hometown team sound like they’ve been pulled out of a time capsule. Since win does a team whose prize running back averages 3.8 Yards Per Carry get to call itself “physical”? Oh, and especially when its new Punky QB is always under assault? No matter how inefficient that team is in the running game, people still confuse them for the 1950s version. It’s just weird.
Peter King some some football games this weekend. They were good, and the teams who played better, won. He’s sick of taking the Chargers’ temperature, which is why he’s going to write on and on about how maybe they’ve turned over a new leaf on the way to turning a corner. For like a half a page. All this before we get to learn what he thought about NCIS last week.
When do the Broncos play again?

3.8 YPC = physcial?
You have to call it “physical”, because its obviously not “good” ;-)

From Peter King
I did find these stats from PK very interesting and telling especially comparing yards per attempt
7. I think it’s incredible that we’re almost halfway into this season and Kyle Orton is ahead of Jay Cutler in almost all ways. Count them:
a. Wins: Orton’s 6-0, Cutler 3-3.
b. Passing yards: Orton’s 264 ahead.
c. Touchdown-to-interception differential: Orton’s plus-8, Cutler plus-3.
d. Yards-per-attempt: Orton’s .57 better, a full half a yard against the guy who’s supposed to have the biggest arm in the league.
e. Passer rating: Orton 100.1, Cutler 86.9.

P.S.
Is it wrong for me to cheer for Cutler to not do well in games. I mean I wish the guy the best in life, but I can’t help but be happy when he throws interceptions. Is that wrong? I feel kind of guilty about rooting for someone to not do well, but then I think, hey, he chose this! Call your boss.

No, It's not wrong
You are a Bronco fan. You don’t want his team to do well because it affects the Broncos draft spot next year. You can feel happy when he throws picks because he is just being himself and living up to the expectations of reality. At least he’s consistent.
Thanks Doug.

Alternately, the Broncos mean something to you. Cutler, and the supposed fact that he was going to make the Bears instant contenders, was used to mock the heck out of something you adore. Of course you want him to fail — it’s the most efficient way to silence folks who bag on our team.
Not noble or high-minded, exactly, but since when was fandom supposed to work that way?
by Chibronx on Oct 26, 2009 8:22 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely not.
I was downright giddy when he threw that third pick. I thought maybe he was learning how to protect the ball in Chicago, and I was afraid of that, because it would mean more victories for Chicago. After yesterdays appearance, though, it seems he is not.

Nope
Cuz the worse he and that team does, the better our draft pick in 2010. As a Broncos fan, how could you NOT cheer for the Bears to suck this year?
As I’m watching the game yesterday and the Bears are down 21 or whatever in the 4th, I turned to my buddy and said “cutler’s gonna throw at least one more pick because now he’ll really be forcing it”. 2 downs later, there’s the pick.
Sometimes, it’s just too easy. ;)

BTW, King got his numbers wrong. Cutler is only plus-1 with 11 TDs and 10 INTs after yesterday’s game.
I added PK’s MMQB since it was posted late today…

10 INT’s in 6 games on pace to throw nearly 28 for the year? I don’t get the rate.

Be Careful What You Wish For, Punk QB
One of the great things about the fast start to this season is that we can all bury our fixations from the offseason. I’ve publicly suggested that nobody here should bother to mention that guy Whatshisface who played Mike last year, the one who liked to overpursue and cheer. Let’s not go there. He’s gone, we’re a better team, case closed. Let’s excise the painful memories.
Well, if you, like me, still enjoy seeing a certain Punk QB get what’s coming to him, it’s time to move on. It’s time for all of us to move on. That guy is in a terrible football situation
Quarterback may now be the only position on the field at which the Bears will not need an upgrade in the short term. Their offensive line gets pushed around. The receivers run poor routes. Garrett Wolfe looks horrible spelling Matt Forte, and Matt Forte isn’t looking too hot. (Greg Olsen and Des Clark are OK, I guess).
The team has a terrible secondary. They came into this year relying on an injury-prone defensive tackle and a linebacker on the wrong side of 30. Even with all of the horses in place, the Cover-2 is losing effectiveness.
When I look at the aging, ineffective and injured personnel on the bears, I can’t help but feel like things will get worse next year. If I were drafting for the Bears next year — and it looks like their first pick will be around the 80th overall — I’d have so many needs, it would be impossible to prioritize them.
Chicago wants to be a football town, but the McCaskey family really doesn’t give the people a chance. I’ll continue to be vested in the scenario because I want my friends to have something to root for besides perennial loser baseball teams. But this team is in trouble, and those of us who harbor grudges against the Punk QB need to let it rest — the guy is in for a lousy NFL experience.

True. Now that Dollar Bill Wirtz is gone, the list of terrible owners in Chicago is slighly smaller.

I'll let it rest
maybe after a full season of seeing the guy run for his life, get hit over and over behind a poor offensive line, and then throw multiple picks in the red zone to give games away.
Maybe… I’m not promising anything. 8-)
Take my advice... I'm not using it!

The guy dogged the Broncos
It’s just a shame he doesn’t get to face DOOM 16 games a year. That would be some kind of justice.
He “ya knowed” his way through interviews that looked like bare-faced lies. Insulted the fan base.
Very little sympathy.

36th in RZ passing out of 32 teams...WOW!. Even the back-ups are beating him!
And this is the same thing we dealt with last year, put up incredible stats and fizzle out in the red-zone.

Some decent numbers
esp. salary, but 36th in red-zone passing? That means some if the guys ranked ahead of him aren’t even starters.

Nice comments here Chibronx,
but I can’t wait for the coming Chicago implosion. It’s bad right now, but if they lose to Cleveland at home this week… oh boy. I couldn’t be happier about this whole situation.
As it would turn out, the Bears have a huge following in MT among people my age. This following must flow from the lack of local team and the 1985 Bears being so popular at a time when the kids my age began to like football. Anyway, I took so much BS from Bear and Bronco fans alike this summer, and I always stuck to my argument—that the Bears are going to struggle to be .500 and the Broncos will be a very good team and compete for the playoffs. The argument details were as follows (none of which will be new to you guys):
*The Bears lack talent in a lot of key areas, especially OL, WR, and the secondary (as you said).
*The Bears have zero depth at RB, and if Forte struggles or gets hurt, they will have a tough time winning games.
*Cutler isn’t a QB that can carry a team on his back and win games solely based on his performance. He’s a nice player, but he’s not that guy. He’ll come up big in some spots, but blow it just as often.
*The Broncos were a pretty good team in 2008, and in 2009, are more talented team at every position, with the exception of QB.
*Although Orton may not be as talented as Jay, McDanials should be able to coach him up, and with all the talent on offense, he should be more than serviceable.
*The coaching upgrade on defense alone was going to take this team up a level (from terrible to bad, at the very least)
*My main concern was with the defensive front seven. I wasn’t one of those that thought we didn’t do enough to address it, I just wasn’t sure how DOOM would be @ OLB, how Peterson and McBean would be @ 5-Tech DEs, etc… I was pretty sure anything could be better than 2008, however. My closing argument was always: if the front seven can play ball and compete at the line of scrimmage, this is a playoff team.
Of course, everyone thought I was nuts. ZOMG Cutler will make those receivers better! Cutler made Denver’s mediocre receivers and o-line look good, and on and on. Again this was coming from everyone, Bears fans, Bronco’s fans— everyone. Now I see these guys and it’s sweet vindication baby. I just ran into a long time friend and business associate that I haven’t seen in a while this morning. I had accosted him late one summer evening at a local watering hole about this stuff and he said “I can’t believe how right you were about the whole Cutler/Broncos situation”. Ahh… it feels so great.
I give all the credit to reading MHR. In the spring and summer, those perpetuating these ideas about the Broncos were called kool-aide drinkers, etc. I’m glad I was drinking it, because instead of two cups of sugar, this kool-aide contained two heaping cups of truth.

As it turns out, you didn’t need that qualifier. The Broncos are more talented at EVERY position, including QB.

White Sox champs more recently than the Yankees!
Or the Patriots for that matter! Yes, they’ve been mediocre since, but don’t go comparing Sox fans with Cubs fans – we’ve got our World Series win in our lifetimes, and you cant take that away!! :-)

I dunno, Jake. They have one Series win in 86 years, and Reinsdorf has successfully defined the Southsiders as a “small market” team.
I’d never compare Sox fans to Cubs fans. Sox fans often stay sober during the game, and if you ask them who won on the train ride home, they know the answer.
