Chris Baker
has anyone seen him playing at all this season? He was a big hit to Broncos fans during the pre-season and looked as if he was one of the few bright spots of our new team. He looked to be a great pick up, especially for an unrestricted free agent. Well, I just thought I'd ask since he looked impressive in the pre-season. Has anyone seen him or heard anything about what he's doing. He kinda fell off the map

active squad
He is learning the game, just like Brandstater, and being groomed for a future role. He has not appeared in any games yet because he has been listed as inactive for every game. I am hopeful he will become a contributor this year. Your link showed Pedescleaux on the practice squad and Baker listed as inactive.

I don't believe he is on the practice squad... but has been inactive in every game so far.

You beat me to it.
And IMO that is the perfect way to go. I believe when he’s ready, he’ll be a monster. His lack of playing time means Fields and Thomas are getting the job done. Win-win.
Phyllis? Phyllis? Are you there? I can't hear you anymore.

Very true IMO
Fields has been quite a horse. Thomas has filled in nicely when he has played, and when they are in obvious passing situations (late in game, other team behind) there has been EXCELLENT play on the line, it seems Reid is playing “nose tackle” in these situations, although sometimes there have been four down linemen.
I think it is a blessing to have great depth that is seemingly going unused, and I agree it is nothing to worry about.

Trevor Pryce was inactive for half the games in his first year
and he turned out pretty well. I’m still sorry we let him get away.

Thanks for the update.
Speaking of players I was excited we signed at the time, can anyone enlighten me as to the status and whereabouts of Rulon Davis?
Will be nice to see TPryce this weekend, although on the wrong side of the ball.
Blues. Cardinals. Broncos. Rockies (when not playing St. Louis!).
Drinkin' the orange kool-aid since the day McDaniels was hired.

Rulon was cut
Broncos Team Roster even though nfl.com shows him on the Broncos roster. He was released on 8/18/09.
He was injured in training camp. They replaced him by trading a 5th and a 7th to the Pats for LeKevin Smith.

LeKevin
They traded a 5th and got LeKevin and a 7th. Then they traded the 7th and got Hochstein. So basically they got LeKevin and Hochstein for a 5th.

He's in street clothes just like the rest of the 53.
You saw Lloyd on the sidelines and others during the Deggo game didn’t you? They are there and ready (since they practice every week with the team) to suit up if they are needed. You can only suit 45 on game day.

hadn’t heard about him in a while. Hope he becomes a HUGE part of our future. GO BRONCOS!!!

the logic behind missing playing time
I talk about the 45 man (+3rd QB) — or active — squad a lot, and I hope that some of those comments on roster math seep in.
Somebody has to be inactive. And the positive side of the inactive list this year is we’ve rarely had to use our depth to replace players who are injured. The result of that is that we’ve seen certain players on the inactive list every week (almost without exception).
Baker has the problem of being 3rd string. There isn’t room to carry virtually ANY 3rd stringers on the active list. Here’s the numbers: 46 = 3 specialists + 21 defense + 22 offense. It should be noted that some positions DO carry 3rd stringers, but this is because the base formation concept normally used to express the idea of 1st, 2nd, etc., is an inadequate way of expressing sets used for situational formations. For instance, Quinn, our 3rd string TE, is used in every game, because an extra blocking TE is utilized for Jumbo sets in the red zone (I believe). Quinn isn’t truly a 3rd stringer because he starts (so to speak) in that formation.
The point is that the math requires you to employ more players at some positions because they may be on the field at the same time. We use a similar roster math logic when we bring in Woodyard or Ayers on 3rd down/passing situations. We also see the same roster math logic when a 5th or 6th DB is brought in. And who that might be will vary according to what his assignment will be. A big nickel package, in which a large WR or TE is covered, could utilize Barrett, while a more typical small nickel could bring in J. Williams or A. Smith.
There is no package that employs 3 NTs (although a goal line package might), so there isn’t a justification for activating Baker other than an injury, or, perhaps, for motivational purposes. I’m not aware of his utilization on STs either, so it’s going to take an injury to necessitate activating him, and we don’t want that.
The situation for the inactives is only subtly different than that of the practice squad, although we rarely consider them either. Teams employ scout teams to mimic upcoming opponents, and many of these players come from the group of players who won’t be seeing game time. It’s not an unimportant task — clearly — but there’s very little attention given to this duty in the MSM. And this is partly because these practices are closed to the public, which also means they’re closed to the press.
It should be noted that many of the current team members — particularly on the DL — graduated to the active list after spending their time on the PS/inactive list. It’s also worth noting that their chances of making the team next year are much better as a result, and this is largely because they’re gaining experience playing against other team members even though that experience is out of the public’s eye and often goes unrecognized. For instance, Pedescleaux’s chances of making the DL rotation next year should be considered along with the prospects for any potential draft picks.
As they say, “out of sight, out of mind.” Don’t let that fool you though. Baker and Pedescleaux are still learning under the guidance of Nunnely Both of them still have plenty of potential, and anyone who is currently pondering our next draft needs to consider that our future is already on the team — although that future is nearly invisible and often forgotten.

I wonder if Baker
might be active this week, since Fields is struggling with a hamstring injury.
IT is, and it's impossible for IT not to be.

I bet Fields will play
Injuries appear to be a small deterrent this year. I don’t recall hearing about the injury so I have to lean towards his playing, especially since he has a few more days to rest it. On the other hand, you never know with hammies.
I’m expecting to see Larsen on the active list, because he contributes heavily to STs.
I was thinking of the following when I wrote the post above:
FUNCTION ON TEAM
1) Backup Depth — plays when starter is injured.
2) Rotational Depth — part-time starter to relieve tired 1st stringer.
3) Situational Depth — plays in formations that require extra players because of down, position of field, etc.
4) Expanded Depth — plays an alternative position or on STs.
Baker could — eventually — be used to play DE34 in addition to NT but he’s a NT backup for now, and I think it’s better to have him get that position down pat before we attempt to use him elsewhere. Thomas can fill in for Fields if if the latter is incapable of playing but we won’t know that till immediately before the game, when the active list is submitted. I’d expect Nolan to scheme around any player shortage by using a player who’s already seen action. So far, there’s been very little tendency to remove a starter when he can play at ANY capacity.
Our depth is still pretty good with the 6 DLs who have been active (except L K Smith) for our previous games. I expect to see more change on STs. Cutting Kern shows that that area of the team is being scrutinized, and I’d expect to see changes made there before anywhere else.
