The Weekly "I'm Tired" Rant

Enjoy the ravings!!!

1.     I'm tired of the name "Jay Cutler" being treated like a dirty word around here.  Lots of people, including myself, are keeping a close eye on how Jay is doing in Chicagoland, and we should all be able to talk about that trade and its impact on our team in a straight forward and open way, without someone piping up and ripping us for not "letting it go".

What went down with Jay Cutler this off-season has had a huge impact on where our team is today, and we all should be able to mention Jay's name without having to apologize to everyone for doing so.  Evaluating the decision to trade Cutler is part of accurately assessing the decisions that have been made by our coaching staff... and ultimately, it will be an important component to allocating trust in their decisions of the future.  It is not all about spewing hate on "the player".

Personally, I love the fact that the decision to trade Jay Cutler has, up to this point, been extremely profitable to the Broncos, and I don't apologize for saying it.  The Broncos are a better team because of that trade, and it is evident, not only in the passing stats... but more importantly... in the Win's and Losses column.  If you would rather "trade back" right now... you are either a McDaniel's hater, a Cutler lover, or... a bears fan.

The reality is, what many of us were unable to see at the time, is becoming more and more clear every week.  Jay is an amazing athlete, with a real gift at throwing the ball.  He is, however, very immature and not much of a leader.  He also is arrogant and selfish, and that arrogance causes him to make risky and ill-advised throws... leading to turnovers.  And as Lebowski has demonstrated so clearly in his posts... those turnovers ultimately cost your team Wins!

So when we talk about Jay Cutler, we are really just considering the beauty of the decision to send him away, and celebrating the fact that an un-popular decision is proving itself out to be the right one.  What we thought was going to be our "great un-doing", has ultimately led us to a "great awakening"... and I, for one... would like the freedom to talk about it!

2.     Speaking of Jay Cutler, how in the heck does he avoid the scrutiny that every other QB on the planet would be under if they had thrown 10 INT's after 6 games.  Jake Delhomme, Jason Campbell, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Kerry Collins, and Jamarcus Russell have either been benched, or have received calls to be benched... and yet only one of those names (Delhomme) has more INT's than Cutler.  Why there is not the same kind of buzz going on about Cutler is beyond me.  I'm tired of Jay getting treated differently than every other QB in the NFL.

Think on this.  Kyle Orton had 3 INT's in his first PRESEASON GAME and it was front page news.  He threw a left-handed INT in a 4th and Goal situation in his second PRESEASON GAME and he was dubbed "reckless and turnover prone".  Remember all of the calls to start Simms or Brandstater?

I'm not sure how he does it, but Jay has the ability to "never be the problem", when many times, he is the problem.  The talk in the media right now is how bad the Bear's D is (sound familiar) or how bad the Offensive Line is or how little talent Cutler has at the WR position.  But I have yet to read or hear anything on Jay's poor play... which is simply amazing.  Had Cutler not thrown 4 INT's against Green Bay, the Bears would be 4-2... instead of 3-3...  Had he not continued the trend for throwing Red-Zone INT's, they might have beat Atlanta for a 5-1 record.  Honestly, couldn't you make a case that if Cutler wasn't the QB, the Bear's could be a better team?  Don't take that to an extreme, but honestly... I think I could.

3.     I'm tired of reporters making a big deal about "must win games" as the reason a team is going to win.  Hello people... This is the NFL and every game should be a must win game... especially at this point in the season.  If the only reason your team is going to give their best effort is because their back is against the wall... well, that says a lot about the character of your team.  The only games that might not be "must wins" in a season would be if it's week 17 and your team is 14-1, and has already secured the prime position in the playoffs... but other than that, you had better be playing to win every game.

That is why I love Brian Dawkins.  The guy just gives 110% every time he steps onto the field.  There is no 90%... or 95%... it is all go... all the time.  The moment you decide that you don't need to give your very best, every play, that is when you will forfeit your right to be a champion.

Almost every pundit that picks Baltimore to win uses this exact excuse... "The Raven's are in a "Must Win" situation."  Are you saying that winning games has nothing to do with the talent, the coaching, the game-plan, the execution, or anything else?  Are you suggesting that the 3 games that the Raven's lost is because they really weren't giving 100%... or that they didn't consider those other games as games they needed to win?  Please.

If you don't like the Bronco's... or you get your information from Jamie Dukes... or you really just don't want to give McDaniels any credit for putting together a tough and competitive team... then just say so.  At least that is an honest and rational justification to pick a 3-3 team over a 6-0 team that has defeated Cincy, New England, Dallas, and San Diego.  Just know, your probably going to be wrong.

4.     I'm tired of the Broncos leading the league in "Dead Money" against the cap.   I had no idea that this year, we have $29.6 Million held against the cap for players that are long gone from Broncoland.  That is more than any other team in the NFL... even the Raiders.  What this proves is, while Shanny was an offensive Genius, he was a personnel nightmare.  When Al Davis and the Raiders have less "Dead Money" against the cap than you... that is bad.... really, really bad.

Do you realize just how devastating "Dead Money" is to your team's ability to be competitive?  Check out the 4 teams that are just below us  (they are actually better than we are!)... Oakland, St. Louis, Detroit, Kansas City.  The fact that we are 6-0, with such a huge "handicap" is simply amazing.

Which leads me to one of the most unsung hero's of this year's team (although not here at MHR), Brian Xanders.  The guy has been an absolute money!  When teams were dumping huge contracts on players like Albert Hanesworth ($41 Million Guaranteed), McD and Xanders were snagging players such as BDawk, Renaldo Hill, Andre Goodman, Andre Davis, Ronald Fields and 8 others, all for just under $37 Million.  Think about that for a little while.  We signed at least 9 quality starters for less than the what the Redskins dumped on Hanesworth. (read the article by Mike Klis here)

What is even more telling is that 11 of the 16 players that make up the "Dead Money" cap hit are not even in the NFL any longer.  This is absolutely the most horrific stat of all.  Why?  Because it proves how poorly the personnel decisions have been the past couple of years.  When you are still taking a cap hit on players who can't even make another NFL roster... that is a bad, bad thing.  The fact that this team is as deep as I can ever remember, is proof that Xanders and McDaniels are doing an amazing job.  Just think about what they will be able to do once that "Dead Money" is cleaned up a bit... think BMarsh, Orton, and Doom... OH MY!

5.     I'm tired of the Draft Projections for 2010.  Don't you think it is a bit premature to start digging around in that pit.  First of all, we have only completed 7 weeks of a 17 week season.  Where a team will be drafting is an absolute guess at this point, unless you are talking about the St. Louis Rams.  Who they will be drafting is simply ridiculous to even consider.  It is too early!!!!  Secondly, even the mock drafts that speculate the day before the draft are completely wrong.  Which leads me to the biggest point.  What value do Mock Drafts have anyway?  It's kind of like the MSM's preseason NFL power-rankings, or John Clayton's 3-13 prediction for the Bronco's this year.  We all know how valuable and accurate that has been so far this year.

I know that we all get itchy thinking about what is coming down the pipe for our team in 2010, but it really is way to early to start these kind of speculations.  Keep your eye's open for the talent out there in the college ranks, and continue to evaluate areas on the Broncos that might need some consideration come draft time, but save the projections and the mock drafts for January or February 2010... or just wait until draft day and watch what really happens then.

6.     I am so tired of there not being any MHR RADIO for an entire week.  Hey GURU... we miss you man!!!  Can't wait for tonight's show!!! Is it true we've got ROMO on tap?

7.     I'm still tired of the Bye Week...  and I'm still tired of being 6-0.  Bring On The Raven's and 7-0 Baby!

GO BRONCOS!!!!

Just speaking for myself...

…but after what Calijoe shared with us about how 6 stiffed him while he served fourteen people in 6’s party, and the lil note that 6 left Calijoe afterwards, I’ve lost all respect for that douchebag 6. Personally, I hope Jared Allen makes 6 “kiss the baby”, after he has thrown about eight INT’s.
That’s my rant, and I’m stickin to it

If nobody gave a link to Calijoefornia's comment about Cutler's tip...

It was in a comment to this post

Here’s the quote:
“It wasn’t that long ago (last season actually) that I worked at Wolfgang Pucks in LoDo. Well, on a windy and somewhat snowy January 8th (Before McD’s hiring), Jay came in with about 13 other people at around 9 pm and had his feast. I was obliged to serve him and all his guests all night long. Well, they were there about 3 hours and when they left I went to clear the tables and there sat a napkin with a nice message: “F—- this town, I’m out of here and your tip’s coming with me”

So yeah, how’s that for a first hand example of Cutler?"

From what I’ve seen of Cutler I believe this story. Good riddance. And it goes to show that the MSM’s narrative of arrogant McDaniels running of the star QB is a bunch of crap. Cutler was on his way out and McDaniels knew it so McDaniels got what he could for him. The fact that Cutler is a liability at QB is gravy. Having Orton play this well is, um, shredded cheese on the gravy? Whatever it is, its awesome.

All work and no play makes Homer something something.

The Napkin Story

1. Wolfgang Pucks was never in Lodo and was closed on the date referred to.
2. Another actual restaurant in Lodo was then referred to by Calijoefornia… I called the owner who said that #6 was never in his restaurant.

I don’t mean to embarrass Calijofornia, but the story is not true.

+1 on the draft

It is downright insulting to be talking about the draft now. I think it is OK to track where we stand in terms where we might pick next year, but picking college players to draft for specific positions is outrageous and demeaning to the current team players.

OK. Some folks are real draftniks. Teams have scouting departments and pay attention to college players so they are better prepared when the draft happens. Accordingly I am not calling for banishment of the discussion. I will simply not participate. Yet you might as well know that I think it is insulting to the current players and way too early to even be thinking about.

by Endzone on Oct 29, 2009 12:31 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems like its more..

An offseason thing. There is enough to enjoy during the season. I could care less about the millionare’s egos and where they think we (the fanbase) rate them, I’d rather save the draft for the filler after the superbowl till April.

Isn’t the bye week like a miniature off-season in itself? I imagine the same time passing activities will show up in the week before the SB too =)

OK, but

it’s probably also disrespectful / insulting to your wife / girlfriend when you check out that cute blonde at the grocery store or wherever. Are you planning on cheating on her? Of course not! But if you’re (what I consider to be) normal, you still take a little look. If nobody’s watching, maybe a longer one. Just try not to stare. Mirrored sunglasses help.

We all love our team. Especially this year, the romance is running high. But innocently checking out some of the talent floating by, as an idle fantasy (maybe he could be the next Ronnie Lott, or Lawrence Taylor…) isn’t that evil.

Some...

such as myself enjoy talking abut the draft year round. It is kind of a hobby for me. For someone to suggest it is insulting or demeaning is a bit of a stretch, IMHO. I still support the current team all year, but if I enjoy looking at “what-ifs” of draft scenarios. Who am I hurting and why does it matter? I agree with the inaccuracy of the process, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.

by BroncoJeff on Oct 29, 2009 12:43 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

No Problem

Draftniking is a fine hobby especially when discussing BPA’s next year. But put yourself in the same position. What if everyone around you at work was debating who they would pick to replace you? I would be shocked if some Broncos players don’t visit this site.

It’s a different strokes for different folks thing. It is just not my cup of tea.

by Endzone on Oct 29, 2009 12:56 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of...

an apples to oranges comparison between what I do and them, but I get the point. I LOVE draft discussions though. That is why this site is often more entertaining in the off-season than during the season. As you say, different strokes…Although I’m sure we’ll agree on this…GO BRONCOS!

Word!

I agree heartily about Jay. I don’t wish him any ill at all, but observing his performance with the Bears only reinforces how correct McDaniels was in sticking with an unpopular decision.

That bodes well for the Broncos moving forward. We’ve got a real leader as a coach, and he’s not afraid to stand tall in the face of criticism.

Nice rant, #22. Tightly written. Rec'd.

But I think you contradict your point #1 with #2. I agree with both, by the way. It’s kind of like a car crash, where you know there’s nothing to be gained by looking, but you sort of can’t help it.

I still think Colorado Kitten’s hypothesis about Orton’s being the great and powerful wizard may be true, and that Nutler may have similar powers, of invisibility after he screws up. It’s kind of like we traded Sauruman for Gandalf.

Dead Money

Does anyone know when the “dead money” is off the cap? It seems Travis Henry’s should be soon, or why isn’t Cutler’s or Bly’s going with them to the other team. It is confusing to me.

I’m also tired of the “must win” rant, especially after the Broncos last must win game in San Diego last year. I am also tired of the Ravens still receiving pre season hype – as Parcells once said – the record is who you are!

Today's Horse Tracks

Has a reference to “dead money” and there are lots of other articles online. Like you, I cannot find the exact time frame when the “dead money” comes off the books. Maybe Mike Klis might know? I’m certain Xanders does.

As I understand it, “dead money” includes:

  • players who are waived
  • franchise tags placed on players
  • tenders placed on restricted free agents
  • prorated bonuses

The good news is that “dead money” does not mean the team is paying that out. The bad news is that the team cannot spend that money because it would put them over their salary cap. If I understand it correctly, dead money continues for the length of the players’ contract and for as long as their bonuses were pro-rated.

The Keary Colbert dead money is instructive. He was traded by the Broncos in 2008 to the Seahawks for a conditional draft pick and now plays for the Lions. You might think that going on to another roster would eliminate the dead money, but it does not because he received a pro-rated bonus ($2.5M). Same deal with Cutler’s pro-rated bonus.

by Endzone on Oct 29, 2009 1:22 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Next year

there is no cap, hence Dead Money becomes a moot point. There are some analysts who believe the owners and players may want an uncapped year so they can wipe the slate clean and start over. Lots of Dead Money and Cash Over Cap issues out there.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Oct 29, 2009 8:43 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Next Year

SWG, we don’t know for certain what the owners and players will do next year. We do know that a revised CBA is being discussed. Yet we do not know the details. It may be capped, it may be uncapped, it may address dead money and cash over cap, it may not. It may be a combination of all of the above. Hence dead money MAY become moot and it may not. I would vote to eliminate it if I could but as I understand it it is a player’s issue.

by Endzone on Oct 30, 2009 8:24 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

We do know

for certain, that the current “Dead Money” is only defined under the current CBA and it will be expired. Dead Money is an artificial construct of the CBA and the cap it defined. The owners with Dead Money issues, like those with Cash Over Cap issues, will make sure that their issues are addressed somehow. The cap is not the issue in the CBA. It is the formula for calculating the floor, and rookie salaries (really only the top 10 or so).

I did a quick tally for 2010 dead cap, and it doesn't look promising

disclaimer: there are no “official” sources for contract info, since the Denver Broncos don’t release that information. All cap and contract data comes from leaks, tips, etc. and is thus not 100% guaranteed accurate.

2010: $28.8 mil

2011 should clean up a lot of the loose ends, and is the final year for these doozies to come off the accounts:

Bly: $9.150
Niko: $3.860
Henry: $2.800
Cutler: $7.388

Your figures look off...

Henry’s cap hit was spread over tow years 2008 & 2009 (the most you can spread the hit for a cut player)
Cutler was traded so the team should take the entire hit in 2009 (no spreading for traded players).

My addition to the rant.

I’m tired of reading the MSM give us some love, but still pick us to lose. In all the various weekly predictions, I only saw two humans pick the Broncos to win and two computer pickers (Harmon and one on maybe ESPN) pick the Broncos.

I’m also tired of close games, even if they are exciting. I can be just as exciting by a dominating performance. I want the Ravens to be the recipients of are first really complete game in which the offense, defense, and special teams for the Broncos all contribute in a blow-out victory. I’d like to see the Broncos march down the field for a touchdown, followed by a turnover on the kickoff, followed by Broncos scoring another TD, followed by Ravens forced three and out, followed by a punt return for TD, followed by another 3 and out, followed by another long scoring drive to end the first quarter.

I remember too well how your D shut down past Broncos teams. I remember Sharpe demoralizing me when he ran that deflection for a TD. I’d love some real payback. I’m torn…one part of me is worried for the loss, but I had a sudden inspiration that it would be a blow-out victory…somewhere around 35-0. I’m not tired of visualizing that. Wouldn’t it be beautiful?

P.S.

I’m also tired of re-reading my post after I’ve posted it and seeing grammatical errors that make me look like a bonehead.

NDB

Happens to the worst of us:-)!

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I think the preseason power rankings and mock drafts are just fun. Meaningless (as are any rankings since this isn’t like the BCS), but fun. It adds another dimension of pleasure after 6 wins to see the Broncos go from 27 to 3 on the power rankings.

HRU

Excellent points about Cutler getting a pass on the issue of INTs. It’s interesting the company he is in. In every other case, they are calling for heads to roll.

The myth of the gunslinging QB who leads the team to victory by the sheer force of his arm continues.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I'm tired of

being the only one on this thread that thinks we’ll win.
You can spare a loss guys. Come on.

One game closer...

and we might have to smell them… no deal raven, but for your viewing pleasure we promise to even the playing field in your division. Bengals and Browns are already taken care of next week we’ll put down the Steelers for you. I feel like we’ve done too much for you guys though, letting you borrow Shannon Sharpe and laying down for you on your Super Bowl run, then again you did beat the Chargers and if that hadn’t have happened I might still smell them… just in case I haven’t made it clear, the Chargers stink.

Great rant, HRU

Especially regarding “must win” games.
