Longest Bye Week Ever...
Going into the bye week undefeated has led to the LONGEST bye week ever! If there had been a loss or two then you end up telling yourself "okay, we need this week to regroup and get our gameplan together." Also, most teams use bye weeks to heal from injuries, but aside from a few sore ankles and banged up shoulders, we are a pretty healthy team.
This isn't the case with the 2009 Broncos. And I am happy. But like the rest of us this week, we are reaching for things to talk about. So I bring up Tom Brandstater.
Third on the QB depth chart, Tom probably won't see any gametime this season, but what do you think is in the cards for old Tom? I think a lot of us viewed his drafting by Josh McDaniels as a kind of 6th round diamond in the rough that Coach can mold into a Tom Brady type.
So, I'm wondering if McDaniels wants Tom to be his QB within the next 2-3 years, or if he is going to keep Orton for as long as he can since Orton is running the system beautifully right now, and is only getting better.
Then there's Chris Simms. In New England they usually only kept 2 QBs on the active roster, and so i see McDaniels eventually wanting to do that too. Also, with the influx of inferior quarterbacks in the league right now, Simms has to wonder if he can get a starting gig with another team, (Buffalo, Cleveland, St. Louis, Oakland, Carolina, Jacksonville to name a few.)
What do you think?

I agree
Out of the three QBs Simms is the only one that was not hand picked by McDaniels.

Not True
Chris Simms was acquired during the offseason after McDaniels was named HC and so he was in fact hand picked by McD. He was signed for two years and is a heck of a QB. His signing may have been part of Cutler’s dissatisfaction in that he earns more than Cutler would have and might have pushed Cutler for the starting position.

We might get some good return if we trade him.
A mid-round pick or a mid-talent player from another team, that fits well in our system. I do smell a trade coming, in the offseason.

What do your guys think of our backup qb Troy Smith? Anyone really watch him in college? What kind of value do you think the Ravens could get for him?

I watched him in college at Ohio State.
He was pretty good, not great. He’s athletic, but wasn’t a dynamic passer. In the NFL, everybody is athletic, so you can’t rely on athleticism alone. I assume he’s worked on his passing abilities since coming into the NFL, but I don’t know that he will be able to develop enough to be a quality NFL starter.
Flacco is your man, for sure.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

The Denver Broncos have 10 more games to play before they really define their 2009 season.
That’s a long row to hoe and they will have their chances to make this one of the most memorable seasons ever. If you want to read a great post go into archives and read the “Tale” of Tom Branstater by Emmett Smith (broncobear). Tom is very intelligent, tall and versatile . He will IMO make a fine quarterback some day, just not right now. Kyle is improving more and more as the playbook unfolds, so I don’t see any reason why McDaniels wouldn’t sign him to a new contract after this season. We’ll see though and you can’t out guess McDaniels, heck it’s been hard for opposing teams to do that and they get paid.

Simms was insurance against Cutler
Coming in McD knew that Cutler would be a problem child and although he most likely believed he could work through the attitude (a la Marshal) he knew to do so he needed a smart and reliable QB on the roster. KO changed the mix and I believe has developed better than McD expected when TB was drafted. My guess, one more year with Simms as #2, TB will be brought along carefully but will be our next Gary Kubiak as Orton only continues to improve.

Let's not discount Orton as a long term solution just yet
Remember McD’s last starting quarterback (I’m not counting Cassel here).
Brady – 6th Rounder, backup, got his start due to a major injury to Bledsoe in 2001. Then went to the playoffs in 6 of the next 7 years, won 4 Super Bowls, etc etc.
As people are noting, Orton has gotten better in every game. Who knows what his play-making ability will look like by the end of the year.
My gut feeling is that Kyle will be our quarterback for the next 5-7 years, and that during that time we will be an annual participant in the post season (I know, I know, some will say I’ve been swigging too much kool-aid).

Orton, with Tom B backup
Simms was signed for 2 years and will be allowed to serve out his contract. At that time, Tom B will develop enough to be a reliable backup. All the while Orton continues to lead Broncos to win after win.
If Tom B is progressing faster, I wonder if Simms will have some trade value this offseason.

He is
Just another solid choice for depth on the team. From watching him in Camp and throughout preseason, it looks like he has the tools to have a chance in the NFL. He is still a bit raw at this point, but he showed improvement when he had the chance in game situations. I think we will all find out in the next draft, how comfortable McX is with his development. If they draft a QB, it either means that they have a chance to increase the quality of depth, Tommy isn’t ready yet, or if he is, they need to draft someone to back him up.
