Some quick thoughts regarding the Broncos win over the Cowboys
Some quick thoughts regarding the game.
1) Great win, the defense showed they are legit and have a great heart. They never gave up and credit to Coach Nolan again.
2) I hate to say this, but for the 1st half I would say that McDaniels was out coached by Phillips, but I would say that the adjusts made after halftime were the difference and McDaniels adjusted fairly well to what the Cowboys were doing on Defense.
3) I have never been concerned about the O-line until this week, man either Dallas is very good or our O-line is not as good as we thought. They simply got man handled most of the game.
4) We had timely sacks, but again, there were times the Romo had way too much time, credit the DB for playing extremely well.
5) I still think Hillis needs some more touches, not having him running the rock on short yardage and conversely being a passing target baffles me.
6) I found myself asking where the hell was Champ Bailey in the 1st half, that he needs to step up and make some plays, and low and behold he must have had the same thoughts, cause he showed up in the 2nd half.
7) I said it earlier this week, but I am guessing this game turns Phillips back into a DC and makes Mike Shanahan a HC next year, I think that is still going to be the case.
8) Granted Kyle Orton didn’t throw any picks (more by luck than design), I still don’t see him as the long term answer at QB. His best pass plays were more due to the WR making tremendous plays and the DB missing the int.
9) I will find it very surprising if this team does not win the AFC West (which is a surprise to me, but the defense is much better than expected).
10) I think we may have the best two ILB for a 3-4 team in the league. And we may have the best four LBs in the league that nobody knows about.

Defense much further ahead
We just held the number one offense to 10 points – held the best running offense to 70 plus yards. No doubt that right now the Defense is the heart and sole of this team. Most suprising is the highly touted Dallas monster O line lost most of the battles.
The offense looked sick in the first half. Ortons numbers were not bad. Think the real culprit was the penalties – jitters? Although the defense should get the credit for this win, the offense did do what was required to win – they will be going into the next game believing that they will find a way to win – teams that believe that often do win.

hillis DOES NOT need more touches. he had TWO critical flags that really set us back in our own territory. he is blowing every chance he gets, and he should remain the FB and not a premier RB

+1
I am losing more and more love for our guy Hillis every week. This kid doesn’t have his head on straight and it is costing us much more than he is helping us. I think he needs to either ride pine or play FB for a few weeks to get his problems worked out.

Strange thing.
Orton didn’t look good to me (which can be blamed on the glove). But the stats say I’m wrong. 22 of 29 I think (not great, but better than I thought from watching the game), no INTs, and 2 TDs. Through 4 games – no INTs and at least a TD each game. 7 wins in the last 8 games.
I’m with you in that I don’t think he looks very good. But I love the stats and wins he’s giving us. I’m curious to see how he looks when the glove comes off. (Or when the “gloves” come off; pun intended).

This is the mystery of Orton
He looks god-awful and has you throwing the remote at the TV, then all of a sudden , you realize the Broncos have won and he has a stellar statistical game.
I say learn to appreciate the mystery.

Like I say below...
I’m glad I’m in company with HT! His overall accuracy left much to be desired: low passes, high passes, behind passes, overthrown passes, etc.
And then he throws a beautiful pass to Scheffler to get a 1st down, and a gorgeous floater to Marshall for the win.
HUH?!
I’ll take the wins.
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

I agree with you
As much as I like seeing efficient QB play, I still want to eventually see a Flacco-type QB who makes few mistakes and several big plays. I’m through with the Cutler-Favre type who makes several of both. Give Brandstater a few years to learn and be molded, and he looks like he has the tools to be that guy.
Orton, as much as I like him for this year and possibly the next, is not that guy. He’s a superb backup and a more than serviceable stop-gap, but he is not a long-term starter. I like the guy, but that’s just not him.

This game proves an old point
that I have had for years. The refs always give Dallas breaks. Royal was so right on when Newman interfered with him, but no call. L. Davis held on two plays, one where he was on the ground and reached out and grabbed a Broncos leg, yet no call.
On Orton I believe he is better than anyone thinks. He still has that glove on, and it takes time to get this offense together. Marshall is starting to get his stuff together and if the two pass interference calls were made…..well?

I was going to make a point about the refs, but I think they were pretty bad on both sides of the ball
There were a lot of bad calls both ways, but I would concur that Dallas definately was getting the benefit of a lot of bad calls.

And terrible spots as well...
Hate to make that perspective from TV, but it looked like Denver was frequently shorted a yard or so.
by BroncoTalon on Oct 4, 2009 6:54 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I noticed that to
That pass to Scheffler near the end of the failed 4th down drive was definitely a 1st down on forward progress.

Oh good!

Ya the pass interference
call on Scheffler was completely bogus. Even troy a said as much on that one.

Ill just like to throw out this one tidbit on Orton
6 of his incompletions came in the first half which means he had 3 incompletions in the second half .

Many good points Broncoman, but
you are completely wrong about Orton. He’s playing hurt, plain and simple. I’m taking rank on this one, after watching him play for the last nine years. I don’t prentend to know the full extent of his injury(nerve damage?), but he’s not even attempting to put air underneath the ball on just about every pass over 15 yards. There were several passes today that KO hits when healthy.
by rocko1 on Oct 4, 2009 7:17 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Still..
Overthrowing Gaffney on that fake end-around long bomb? Who thought he had it in him? The Orton haters just need to see that pass to know that “noodle-armed” cannot in any way be applied to Orton. “Inconsistent,” maybe. As much as I like him, I’m starting to question his overall accuracy.
But “noodle-armed”? Absolutely not. That’s just plain ignorant.
And BTW, that throw hardly seems the effect of nerve damage or whatever. It seems to be flat-out Orton.

yeah he need to work on his deep ball accuracy.
But whoeversaid he doesnt have an arm is stupid. He threw some bullets today. Yeah he doesnt have a jay cutler arm. But he has accuracy
by Skotty on Oct 4, 2009 9:11 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree rocko...
say, does anyone remember back when SD had Drew Brees?
He had a “noodle arm” there too. Look at him now. It’s amazing how irrelevant the “noodle arm” concept is in the NFL. He’s a starting quarterback for a reason. If people can’t be happy with what he’s doing, then maybe they should stop watching. He’s probably not going to be the shiny glittery QB the MSM wants him to be. That’s ok. He still wins games.
Personally, I think Denver fans are spoiled with QB-flash thanks to Elway and Cutler. They don’t think it’s possible to win with a “blue collar” quarterback. I have a newsflash: The last time we had a playoff season, we were there with an average quarterback, not the flashy Cutler.
My bet is that Orton gets signed long term if we make playoffs. Plain and simple.
TAKE IT!!!

Very sloppy play in the first qtr.
Defense stayed focused and kept the game in focus. Without that we probably would have been blown away. The major blunder of the game is when McDaniels didn’t go for the field goal to tie the game! I sincerely hopes he straightens his act up with that.

in his defense...
Darrell Reid really blew the block to get Moreno through for the first.

Get the points, joe...
- I believe we will start to see a little more of Hillis each week. I mean this game he had some choice thoughts for the refs. “What f&%k was that”? Cool man, cool..

Don't expect change there
In the post-game press conf, he said, “I’d do it again.” It’s situational, and I was gunning for it in that situation. Honestly, like Calijoe, I’m putting that one on Reid for hanging Ko-mo out to dry. 1 yard? Heck, I’d take #27 for that against the Jets, Ravens, or anyone else, and in our own territory too. On their 25 yard line? No hesitation, no regrets.
