Horse Tracks 10/5/09 - Broncos 4-0 with 2-game lead after beating Cowboys; Buckhalter sprains ankle

Okay, folks. NOW are the Broncos for real? No matter what happens from here on out, last year and the past are gone. This is a better team, still rising and with a brilliant future under the direction of Josh McDaniels. You heard it here that the Brandon Marshall situation was overcooked and now he's making plays and literally embracing the coach. Yes, it already seems the story is more about what's wrong in Dallas, but this Broncos team is a contender. Correll Buckhalter is on crutches after spraining his left ankle, while Brandon Stokley left the game early. Bring on the Pats!

Do yourselves a favor and don't listen to sport talk radio this morning
Les Shapiro: …the defense is decent, but Orton is not very good. Their schedule is filled with “elite” teams and they aren’t one. So while the Broncos may be good, they can’t beat teams like the Giants, the Patriots, the Colts, the Ravens, the Steelers, the Eagles, or the Chargers.

Scott van Pelt today said
“I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong about the Broncos.” He and Ryan Rusillo said they weren’t sure yet that we’re a “great team” (which I completely agree with right now), but Rusillo picked us as the team that impressed him the most.
MSM is finally starting to catch on. As for the Giants Patriots Colts Ravens Steelers and Chargers… only time will tell.

Williams, who injured his ribs and had to leave the game, knows that window. It was the windshield on the SUV that ran him over in the fourth quarter. I didn’t get the license number.

Why?
Why is every long TD pass a miracle when it’s Orton who is throwing it? That BMarsh TD was not a miracle play…it just wasn’t. I don’t get that.

What the hell? That was no miracle. That was Kyle putting the ball where Brandon could catch it, and Brandon working his ass off to score. Even if he hadn’t, the offense was moving the ball and had well over a minute to work with. To think they ‘won on a miracle play’ again is just plain crap. Ugh.
Good on you for calling bull****, Zappa.

Aikman said it was bad tackling… But what is really was is this: a superior player showing off his talent vs an inferior opponent. BM is simply a better player than anyone in the Cowboys secondary. It showed on that play.
As someone that now lives outside of CO, I’ve come to expect this for several teams that don’t play on the east coast or a major market like Dallas or Chicago. Hell.. Ryan Clady is the best O-linemen in the NFL and if you watched an ESPN or Fox Sports outside of Denver, I don’t think the MSM even knows he plays pro football.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
by McGeorge on Oct 5, 2009 8:25 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Great comments, McG.
I heard someone (was it Aikman?) call Clady “one of the best, if not the best young tackles in the league”. Paraphrased, but it was yesterday. I had 2 young kids and a wife who has 0 interest in football ‘distracting’ me during the game, so I’m not sure what was said. I was shocked to hear it. He’s not getting near the love he deserves. He’d better be an all-pro this year. Pro-bowl would be nice, too.
As far as bad tackling, that’s crap. You have to actually get a hand on the guy to call it bad tackling. This was pure lolly-gagging, and Marshall wanting it more. Hell, after the play, he looked like he wanted it more than anything in the world. I’m starting to get the feeling that Brandon has been doubting himself, and needed that play to show to everyone — #15 included — that he is still the same Beast that we’ve all grown to love in Orange and Blue.
by BroncosBassist on Oct 5, 2009 8:30 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have never seen a WR make a group of NFL players look like that.
It was like watching the kid who got held back a year run all over the field. I forgot why Brandon keeps asking for money…. that’s the answer right there.

Marshall made those guys look like children. It was no friggin miracle…it was a superb play made by a BEAST…and credit Graham for his blocking downfield…Marshall wouldn’t have made it to the end zone without the escort.

It was an amazing play by marshall
But personally I thought we scored to quick. I wish Dallas could have tackled him on the 1 yard line so we could eat more time and then score.
The last minute of the game I kept having Santonio Holmes superbowl flashbacks. Fortunately Romo is too stupid to know not to throw to champ twice in a row.
by trumanj on Oct 5, 2009 3:32 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wondered that myself
Would we have been better off having Marshall take a knee at the 1? We could have had Orton take a knee 3 times, then let Prater kick a Field goal and given Dallas the ball back with 30 seconds and no timeouts.
It was the right call, though. As it was, we gave our defense a 7 point lead. Even if they hadn’t held on the goal line stand (after Dallas’ miracle play, mind you), it just would have gone to overtime. In that game, I would have liked our chances in OT.
Mike Nolan is my hero.

No
it’s too hard to make that choice with that much time left anyway, and given the Broncos have had problems punching it in in the red zone you have to take the touchdown any way, and any time, you can get it.
What Stokley did in the Cincy game was amazingly smart but it also happened at the very end of the game.

Peter King just called us the feel good story of the year!
and floated this interesting little tidbit.
Now let’s do a mini-analysis of the biggest decision of the off-season, Denver dealing Cutler for two first-rounders and Kyle Orton. It reminds me of the Patriots dealing Drew Bledsoe in 2002 and handing the quarterback job long-term to Tom Brady. Bledsoe, the independent-thinking mad bomber; Brady, the caretaker who’ll follow the gameplan to a T. Just substitute Cutler for Bledsoe and Kyle Orton for Brady and you’ve got McDaniels’ line of thinking. Now, I’m not saying (and McDaniels wouldn’t either) that Orton’s going to morph into Brady, but the amount of negative plays at the quarterback position has been exactly what McDaniels has preached: zero interceptions, zero lost fumbles, six sacks. If Orton continues on his present pace — 3,624 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 59 percent passing (that should be a tick better) — the Broncos will be playing in January.
True. We have a long way to go, but we’re moving in the right direction, one game at a time.

Orton is no Brady, but Cutler isn’t Bledoe, either (who at least saw the postseason). Otherwise, an interesting comparison. I never thought about “the trade” like that before.
Agreed. We are on a good path. One game at a time.

I know McDaniels is a hard man and all. But after everything that guy had to go through this off season it really is good to see him come through on the other side. Whether you believed in him or not, you’ve got to admire the way he stuck to what he believed in under massive pressure.
Good to see a press conference like that. Good to be a Bronco fan today.

The arrogance of Cowboyville and its media enablers today is staggering. Reading Jean-Jacques Taylor and Todd Archer, you’d think that Dallas just stomped on us all day and then casually gave the game away on a lucky play or two.

I’m glad Dallas gifted us that game. Did you hear that Romo has gone two games without throwing a TD? What was he thinking? Must’ve forgotten or something. Had nothing to do with Champ schooling his ass, or DJ nearly killing his best WR, or his best receiving weapon having to spend the day pass protecting to keep Flozell Adams from looking like an inept fat old man.

I think Flozell is good...
But I’ve watched him the last three weeks, and he just could not deal with our pass rush. I think that bodes VERY well for us going forward. Even with all of the media hype over that guy, you can’t deny that he has some level of talent, and we made him look washed up.

If we can get 5 sacks against an offensive line like the cowboys, we’re in good shape. Many were saying that the boys have the best line in all of football and we just made them look like a pop warner line.

He’s being very hard on himself for past mistakes, and it’s affecting his focus – further contributing to more mistakes. I hope he can just shake it off and break out of that cycle…he’s got the talent if he can just focus.

Where is Eddie Royal and Hillis?
Did anyone else notice Royal dropped the pass on the play when Orton got nailed and the ref rightly called roughing the passer?
Thank goodness Wade wasted a TO early in the 3rd quarter and was in no position call for a challenge.

I see Eddie running his routes, but I’m wishing he was getting targetted more. He needs more reps to shake the rust off and get in sync with Orton. I think it’s hard on him, being subbed out so much this year. He was on the field all the time in ’08.
by BroncosBassist on Oct 5, 2009 8:32 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hillis and Royal have disappointed so far
Royal is also letting frustration show. He barks at the refs all the time and always looks disappointed after his punt returns. Eddie’s body language is not good at all right now. And the exact same can be said for Payton Hillis (but at least its obvious they both care).
Still, it is accurate to say both Royal and Hillis have both taken a step back. These two need to refocus and McDaniels/Orton need to find a way to get them the ball. We are winning games, but our O is a long ways a way from where it needs to be.

That's okay
They’re 4-0 and outplaying their opponents every week, and we can very easily find players/areas which need a lot of improvement. That is a very good thing. We all know the Broncos have not yet peaked (not to say they definitely will this year, but still)…
by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 5, 2009 8:47 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s only okay if Royal and Hillis regroup and reemerge. Those two are going to be kind of embarrassed in film session today. They’ve lost focus and spent too much time/energy jawing with at the refs on Sunday. Hillis, in particular, was guilty of a blatant block in the back.
They are both young players and it’s a good thing they have guys like Stokely and Dawkins to lean on. I expect a lot of improvement from those two and believe I’ll see it in the coming weeks.

It’s a plus that we’re winning while they’re still coming together.
by JeffG on Oct 5, 2009 8:57 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I love how they seem to come together after halftime.
McD learns what the D is doing and adjusts his offense at halftime and they end up dominating the rest of the game. It’s what made the pats so good the last few years. They would start off fine, but then when they could see what the defense was actually doing against them, they found a way to counter it and win.
This defense is strong enough to keep the offense in the game until they can figure out what the opposition is doing.

I've always said a coach makes his money at half time.
If you can toss your gameplan out the window and be focused enough to concoct a new plan and then get the players to execute? What else can you ask from a coach. I was really down on the Broncs’ in the first quarter… I just wanted to get to halftime, because for the first time in a long time, I knew we’d correct our mistakes.
That second half was a masterpiece on defense, and much, much improved on offense.

I’m pretty sure Eddie dropped that pass, also. At the same time, it’s only a difference of 12 yards and there’s still a first down gained on the 15-yard roughing penalty. I agree that it was worth challenging, but even if it got overturned the Broncos were in good shape.

Back to HT. Thanks NYC for the links as always. What an awesome game. Marshall comes up big, defense comes up big, and we now know that we can come back from being down 10-0 in the first quarter. It is so nice to have a defense that just steps up when the need to.

BDawl is great last line of defense
On Hurd’s big 4th down play, BDawk ran all the way across the field to chase him down…even pushing DJ out of the way to make the tackle. It’s a great comfort knowing he’s back there as the last line of defense, in addition to all the plays he makes near the line of scrimmage.
Can you imagine last year’s safeties on that play? They would’ve just waved bye-bye to Hurd as he ran by them to score.

Yeah Broncos
This is a good team because of the dominating defense. Get stuffed on a fourth down try, three and out by the defense. Gav up two big runsd back to back , then another three and out. Then a big play late and four stuffs inside the ten. That is great defense and that can take you a long way. Wait until the offense gets into a rhythm as the season goes along and they could be unstoppable. Look at teams like Baltimore of 2002, Tampa Bay of 2003, Dolphins of the 70’s, Cowboys of the 90’s. Dominate defense. Solid offense and a solid game manager at the quarterback spot. You don’t always need a gunslinger(ie… JayC) to be a great team. I love how the players are buying in to what JoshMac is selling. And to me it is exciting to have a defense that can win you games, not just all offense. Go Broncos

At the bottom of the Silver article there is a comment about the broncos from...
… none other that Jay Cutler… here is what he txt in (see he can txt when he wants to.. lol)
"Those guys are playing well. Defense is carrying them. It’s a good scheme. 3-4 is tough if u do it right"
– Text Sunday night from Cutler, appreciating his former team’s triumph over the Cowboys.
I hope it isn’t just me.. but he comes across as an extremely arrogant guy.. He manages to turn what started out as a compliment to a backhanded snarky comment about the offense to bring it back round to focusing on himself again and how amazing he is because he has an ‘understanding’ of the 3-4 D.
Not sure if I read a little bit to much into that be it did annoy me reading it.. lol.. and i was able to watch the bears game on sunday without to much bias or longing for the lions sack count to keep rising steadily..

Agreed
Silver and Clark Judge both admitted they were wrong and changed their tune with modesty. And honestly, criticizing or doubting the Broncos at the beginning of the season is fine, but just do it with an open mind and while being armed with some actual facts and information. Guys like John Clayton on the other hand are too arrogant to write stuff like Silver and Judge did, they’ll just dismiss the team even while begrudgingly giving them credit. Clayton has to give the Broncos permission for joining playoff race, as if they give a crap. Silver and Judge write like they’ve seen the light.

Funny thing is...
I said to the guys I was watching with, ‘Do you know Orton was 20-29, 243YDS, 2TD today?’
Watching the game you’d think he was 12-49 for 110YDS or something. But no, he had an efficient game, as usual. He got the job done. It is so strange how he wins games, puts up efficient numbers and looks positively ordinary doing it.
But a W is a W. I’ll take it.
However I do like how after the game, Orton conceded that the time will come when Denver will need to put up 35 points to win the game. He seems fully aware of the situation so I am not too concerned right now.

by TheMastermind on Oct 5, 2009 10:16 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to admit
I was actually surprised when I saw his numbers, too. Maybe it’s just the style of play; we were so conditioned to “see” the stats as they are made from Cutler’s arm and Bates air-it-out offense, that perhaps we have to retrain ourselves to see the production differently. It’s not really our fault; it is how human memory is designed.
We tend to just automatically dismiss the mundane from our short-term memory -it isn’t coded for storage because if we remembered everything it would make it impossible to process even basic thought retrieval. We remember the Stokes Deflection TD, and the Beast’s awesome catch and run because they are coded as exciting, flashy, and worthwhile for memory storage, but 99% of Orton’s production is just workhorse offense that won’t see a highlight clip. So we don’t remember it. Add to that the underlying suggestion from both fans and experts that Orton can’t really get it done, and that is the lense that we use to process the information. Look at the two “highlight reel” plays so far – Orton’s work could be dismissed in both cases by haters (one was a “fluke” and the other was a terrible throw that was saved by Marshall’s talent).
And then suddenly we look at the stats and are caught off-guard by how danged productive Orton is…and that’s not including the credit he gets for the reads that turn into all those rushing yards.

was a bigger part of the action yesterday? Not that he hasn’t been contributing before then, but more quietly (i.e., distracting blockers so there’s room for Doom, etc). But yesterday he had a sack (that was nullified on a penalty I believe) and was in on quite a few tackles. Great to see. He’s just going to get better and better, and we have to be patient.

Interesting fact I heard about Orton
I posted this in another thread, but think this is a more appropriate place to post this.
I was watching an east coast version of this telecast, and I heard one of the commentators say something about Orton’s throwing hand during the open shots of the game. They said that the past 3 weeks, in addition to wearing a glove, Orton was also playing with some sort of plastic strip inserted into the glove (presumably to prevent the knuckle getting too much out of alignment and thus dislocated again). The commentator also noted that Orton did not have the plastic thingamajiggy yesterday.
Could this have been the reason that Orton was so off target in the first few throws. Could any of the people who know better answer this?

That was Troy Aikman
saying that and thought that was interesting too. I didn’t really know much about the specifics of the glove itself til then. Truthfully, some of Orton’s inaccuracy yesterday was sort of what i expected from him earlier in the season when he first started wearing the glove. The fact that he’s been so accurate overall with that thing on speaks volumes. It’s hard to know for sure but you do have to wonder if that strip being removed could have affected him some way.
All I know is he’ll be very happy, and a bit more accurate, when the glove comes off. Which I really hope happens next week.

the d is amazing , but ...
… we can all agree that the o-line had one of their worst days. They shot themselves repeatedly in the foot with simple mental mistakes for a full 3 quarters. Ben Hamilton absence I feel played a big part of their bad day. At least this has been a rarity instead of the norm.
It is also apparent that Denver is not a good short yardage team. Reid as a full back on 4th and 1 slips and Morino gets stuffed. If this was the only example, I would be ok with it, but repeatedly denver has had trouble in short yardage situations.
The good news is that the offense is still in early season form with only one way to go. I am still waiting for the O break-out game. It is going to happen. They have the weapons and Kyle is severely underrated.
Maybe it happens when the glove comes off!?!?!
by chedro on Oct 5, 2009 11:37 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Conversely, on short yardage:
Our short yardage game wasn’t THAT bad yesterday. It needs work, but the only time people notice the short yardage runs is when they don’t happen. If I recall correctly, on a 2nd or 3rd and 2, Knowshon took it 14 yards into Dallas territory and helped set up the field goal to tie the game up.
I agree, short yardage needs to be more efficient, but nothing is ever going to be 100% guaranteed automatic—-unless your Adam Viniateri 6 years ago.

Agreed.
No team should expect to be %100 in short yardage situations. There were, as you mentioned, some positives, but it was apparent through 3 quarters of football andin the previous games, that the the 0 line was out of sync in those situations along with the full back. Maybe the need Larson back? But to ignore the problem and say we didn’t look that bad goes against the grain of what this football team has done to achieve its 4-0 start.
Mcd has plenty of footage from the last 4 games to illustrate the issue. Like you said, denver needs to be a lot more efficient.

The first thing they should do in short yardage run situations
is put Hillis in at FB. I know he’s in the dog-house, but he can clear the hole for our guys running the rock until Larson is back. The other good thing here is that Hillis is also a weapon during play-action.

Would love to see Hillis.
But, as it has been mentioned a couple of times here, Hillis is not being factored into the game plan right now. Wether it is because of his bad plays, fumble, block in the back, etc. it is a little hard to tell. I will say this, watching Hillis argue with the officials regarding the block in the back seems to be a even larger statement of where he stands with McD right now. It was clearly a block in the back, and it seems like he is fighting to get out of Mcd’s dog house. Just speculation.
When they put in Lamont Jordan to pick up a 4th and short yardage to close out the raiders game, you know that hillis has an up hill battle for more touches. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds with Buck hurt.

Gil also thinks...
…that McDaniels isn’t the kind of guy who is going to show up at charity events and eat the free cocktail weenies.
In short, he — and Woody, and people like them — don’t have the same access they had with Shanahan.
They responded by dumping all over the Broncos early. Now that the people they dumped all over are showing no interest in palling around with them outside of work, they present this indifference as a character flaw.

the biggest threat to the modern pundit
is loss of access. It can make them irrelevant and in some cases even extinct.
They even have a rallying cry: Remember the dodo!

Turn off your radio or try a station that plays music. When I lived in CO, I liked the 93.1
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Why would I do that?
I have an iPod, after all.
Incidentally, how would you rate the play of Fields, Peterson, and McBean?

Then listen to your Ipod.
Very good against the run, mediocre vs the pass. The three of them get very little push when a team unexpectedly throws on we thought would be running down. I’d still allocate some high draft picks to the D-line in the next draft.
We also have to be very careful about the screens. Our D-linemen duffed a few of those in yesterday’s first half. Peterson really blew one that went his way.
They’ve definitely outperformed my expectations, but they are not the strength of the D. That would be the LBs followed by the secondary.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.

Who is Gil Whiteley?
Is he entirely a Radio Idiot? I personally think that Belichick and McDaniels are ahead of the curve in realizing that they don’t really need to give reporters access anymore. They’re becoming increasingly marginalized on their own, so the coaches may as well let them keep going down their current path. (Of course, I think I am ahead of the curve by writing analysis from an angle that actively doesn’t want to incorporate controlled, agenda-laden “insider” information, so take what I think for what it’s worth.)

According to Gil, McDaniels was out of line for suggesting that the people inside Dove Valley were more "educated" about the Broncos than those who spent the offseason and preseason pontificating about how awful the team was.
i love that comment by McD in his post-game presser. we’re 4-0 and the morons in the press are still questioning off-season moves. McD’s response was a bit snarky, but screw those “journalists.” they have their job to worry about and McD has his

McD's comment
I loved it. It was an intelligent way to say “Kiss My A$$”

McD is smart
I bet that will be one of the last questions anybody will ask him about the past offseason. He took an issue that he has been on the defensive about since he got the job and in a sentence or two put the media on defense so as they will not be asking him those things every week.

Ha
Whiteley suggesting that he’s more “educated” than any living human at anything other than clinging, remora-like, to the underbelly of the local media for decades is a riot.
