I have to post this - Ayers is going to be a beast!
Ayers looked like a number one draft choice yesterday.
And he is only going to get better as teh season progresses. He destoryed Romo on that one pass play early on even though the play was negated by a hodling call down field. He was nasty aggressive the whoe game from what I could see of him.
The hesitantcy is leaving and a true football player is emerging. With everyting else going on with this defense, it is only getting started. At is pace it will be scary good by the second half fo the season.
Every team in the league that does not have Ryan Clady at left tackle had better be getting ready to be terribly worried to play the Broncos this year. I LOVE it!

I agree about Ayers I expect him to be starting over Haggan by the end of the season

I’m excited that he’s out there so much in key situations on a defense that’s playing so well. That alone says a lot, i don’t care about his statline. He still has a lot to learn though and will get better as you said.
One of my favorite plays from yesterday was when he was lined-up wrong and Dre and DJ got him in place just as the ball was snapped and he proceeded to blow up the backfield. Pretty cool.

I loved that one too
They wre screaming at hiim .. lol. And the result was classic. The shift came way too late for Romo to have countered it if he wanted to. They may want to put that one in the regular play book !

This play sold me for good on Ayers
Well, unless he falls off the radar again.
The reason is simple. You saw on that play what happens when he takes the thinking out of the game. When he gets to the point that he can just go on every play, he’ll be making OCs poop a little. The other guys got him into place and he blew up the backfield.

Haggen has played extremly well too
It almost doesnt matter who starts now. They have quality LBs who can do nothing but make plays no matter who is on the field and no matter the down and distance.
Everyone is a contributor which is what is making it all so effective. Nothing they are doing is based on the performance of one individual, ala Merriman, but rather on the entire group of 8 all playing with purpose.

Ayers is growing more and more with every game.
Give him a couple of years and he’ll be throttling offenses.

With Haggan, DJ, Davis, Ayers, Doom, Reid, etc
I don’t care who starts and I don’t care who rotates in. They’re all playing like champs, and that’s what wins games – team qualtiy

Problematic
broncobear, I began a list yesterday of players I thought had really good games. I had to stop after a while when I realized, for the first time in a long time, that I could not single out one or a few players. The Broncos played as a TEAM. What a refreshing concept!

the more difficult task would be...
to figure out who’s been the worst player? Who has been the worst Bronco this year? Who had the worst game yesterday? That’s a question I’ve asked myself after every game and I haven’t been able to answer it yet. That’s a great sign.

I can tell you the BEST player for the broncos................Jamarcus Russell.
And plus, he doesn’t even make the broncos organization pay him a check. He throws the ball to the broncos for free. How nice is that??? Hands down he is the best broncos player for the price.
Ohhhhhhhhh you meant someone that actually collects a check from Pat Bowlen???? Oh, nevermind. My bad.

Worst return on investment
Not to be inflammatory, but the worst return on investment for this year (I am talking about this year only!) is Shanahan.

This hurts to say
There has only been one somewhat glaring poor individual performer so far this season – Peyton Hillis. I think he is just pressing to make a big impact, but the results have been fairly poor. Settle down Rhino, just do your job, it will be OK and you’ll be running guys over soon enough. That being said, I still wonder if he would have gotten the forth and inches.

Unfortunately, I agree.
Peyton had two penalties yesterday and the fumble last week. Also, we need to show success in the short yardage package and he hasn’t helped.
We need him to get nback on track!

I had to look up what this word "team" meant.
I don’t recall seeing a broncos “team” in quite a while, so I guess I forgot what it meant. You’re right. It is refreshing to see them play as a team.

The team concept
I would second everyone above regarding the playing as a team. And I would say the concept died under the previous regime at about the same time that Shanny benched Bubby Brister or thereabouts. Sure, guys like Al Wilson did their damndest to recreate that atmosphere and spark, but after Al went down, I never saw anyone else pick up the torch. This is fun, but it’s a long season – let’s keep it going guys!
Go Broncs!

Ayers
There may have been some hesitancy to embrace the Ayers’ pick among Bronco fandom but most people were merely silent — because they didn’t know about him. The idea of picking a DL was certainly popular, which helped blunt potential criticism of the pick, but few people had considered him in particular.
My impression of Ayers was formed by watching him in all-star competition, where he shined. The best way to get an insight into a player’s ability is (often) to look at his performance in drills against the best talent in college, and Ayers was an animal in one-on-one drills against OLs such as Andre Smith. I was also very impressed with how well he moved in positional drills. These aren’t things that you can explain to others easily, as the proof is in the eye, but I recall seeing him run, when I wasn’t aware of who he was, and thinking “who’s that?” and “wouldn’t it be great if we could get that guy!” And these are significant observations since I rarely react that way.
Part of what kept Ayers off the radar — at least, except in the analyses of the “Mini-Kipers” who eat and drink this stuff — was the fact that he was projected as a DE43. The position of DE is hard to project because it’s a grab bag of smaller, pass rushing specialists and bigger athletes who fit the somatotype of traditional defensive linemen. Because of this, ratings of DEs tend to be very misleading. And even the better sources, such as Scott Wright’s Draft Countdown, aren’t much better at informing readers about the intricacies of projecting players and the utility of BPA ratings.
Here’s an OLD TOPIC that shows what some of us were saying about Ayers before the draft.
The specific abilities that DE/OLBs bring to the table make them hard to evaluate (both in the draft and on the field). I’ve used Parys Haralson as an example of how we might use Ayers at OLB but it’s an inadequate comparison when describing his usage as a situational DL. Pass rushing ability is only a small part of how he fits in there, and his bull rushing ability (collapsing the pocket and occupying blockers) is a more important contribution than most people understand, since he enables other players (note the difference between Dumervil’s sack total last year and this year).
Finally, this is a good article on the differences between DEs. The point, which I can’t emphasize enough, is that you can’t generalize about DEs and draw meaningful conclusions. In order to say something meaningful, you need to understand how a DE/OLB is used (specifically) and the scheme that he’s in. Rarely do the pompous pundits who pontificate on the subject display that level of knowledge.

Physical Skill vs Mental Ability
Ayers is improving and has pro skills. My only concern thus far is his mental ability to adjust to the NFL. He is still making mental errors. I was pleased with the pick and thought he was the bpa at that point.

comment on pundits
The funniest comment I saw was a criticism that we should have taken Ayers at #12 and Moreno at #18 — I’m serious. There was a site that projected our picks in the opposite order and thought we made a mistake by not following their order.
Someone is going to have to explain to me why that would have made a difference. And, actually, I rather doubt that Moreno would have lasted, so I have to disagree. The fact that they found fault — instead of applauding the fact that we picked both the players they projected — says something about the picayune nature of many criticisms.
