Short yardage situations - Where's Peyton?
I have been extremely pleased with our overall team play through 4 weeks and am more confident in our team as a whole than I have ever been post-Elway. However, it is always good to look for improvement. One area of improvement that I believe will come is QB accuracy. Although Orton ended up with decent stats Sunday, he missed early on several open receivers. Penalties had a lot to do with the rocky start for the offense, but some miscues in the passing game also hurt. If the offense had been on the field a bit more early on, perhaps we wouldn't have been working from behind the rest of the game. I am confident that once the glove comes off and the finger is fully healed we'll see improvement. Certainly I'm happy with Orton even with "the glove".
However, one area where I think the Broncos should focus on is short yardage situations. I am shocked at how much Hillis has disappeared this year. Last year he seemed to always make the neccessary yardage through some superhuman effort, and when he wasn't spectacular, always made positive plays, whether on offense or special teams. In the preseason, he looked more than adequate as a RB, and seemed to be a shoo-in for short yardage situations. However, he has relegated himself to the doghouse through a lot of boneheaded plays the first four weeks. Against Cleveland he fumbled the opening kickoff. Last week during the epic goal line fail by the Broncos he had a false start- as a RB. This week he had two penalties on special teams. I think perhaps that Peyton is trying too hard because he's not seeing the field quite as much. He needs to relax a bit and play within his role. I also think that McDaniels needs to give him his role back - he's on the team for a reason. Against Cleveland, the FB-RB combination of Hochstein and Hillis looked pretty unstoppable. With Quinn and Graham, we should be able to line up and run against pretty much anyone. I realize that Hochstein has been starting on the line due to other injuries and that Reid's slip this last week had a lot to do with our failed 4th down conversion, and also think that Moreno deserves some short yardage carries, but I really think the Rumblin' Redneck deserves some carries in short yardage situation. For sure, the Broncos have to do something to improve in this area, and I'd much rather see Hillis get carries than Jordan, who I think is the worst RB on the team.
What do you think about Hillis and his miscues this season? Should he get more playing time or does he deserve to be in the doghouse? One thing to note is that Buckhalter and Moreno have also fumbled the ball deep inside Broncos territory, so Hillis isn't alone in that department. What do you think the Broncos should do in short yardage situations?

To say he "deserves it" is a little bit of a stretch.
The whole reason he is sitting the bench is because he hasn’t been careful with the football and he has had mental lapses that led to penalties. This cannot happen. If he proves to McDaniels that he is over it and he won’t do things like that anymore, he will get some playing time. The only way he will “deserve it” is if he proves throughout the week that he can and will hold on to the ball and play smart football (no penalties).

Trust the Jedi!
Hillis has made some critical mistakes, he appears to be behind the learning curve right now. Coach sees what he does in practice and away from the ball in games – this is not a personality focused team, all pieces must fit together exactly and at this point my guess is that Hillis must still work on some fundimentals. He is still on the roster so I will bet he is getting very close instruction on what he needs.

Well......................................
Hillis has a special teams fumble, a false start inside the 5 on offense that killed a chance for a TD, and 2 block in the back penalties. These have been his main contributions the last 3 weeks. I thought he would play a bigger role but given the performance so far as well as trying to evaluate him from the coaches standpoint, he has not taken advantage of the opportunities he has been given. Now I think Hillis will be a solid contributor at some point but more touches aren’t going to be given to him. One thing I like about this team is that your opportunities are EARNED, not given on potential. The second Block in the BAck call on Hillis against Dallas was so obvious and he was having a fit that it was called. That was a great call, as he was obviously guilty, so he had no gripe there. I see a very frustrated player in Hillis and that is good because he isn’t happy with his performance either, He will get there eventually but he has to sharpen up to get his opportunities. No more stupid penalties. Until then we get Jordan in short yardage, or Moreno which doesn’t bother me all that much.

agree on earning it vs. potential
Otherwise, Ayers would be starting right now over Haggan. Sure, giving Hillis the rock based on faith and not results could end up paying off in stats, but it seems highly dubious it will do so for wins and team buy-in.
This is why McDaniels takes such a hard line regarding team chemistry and philosophy: if he lets up, even once, even for a guy with as much talent/promise/etc. as Marshall and/or Hillis, then the whole foundation crumbles because he no longer has a leg to stand on and becomes capricious in the eyes of his players.
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

Moreno is our short-yardage back...
I think he’ll get better over time…i so wanted Moreno to do a Walter Peyton leap-dive on that 4th and 1 last week.

He might have, but Reid slipped in front of him
That would have required a combo Michael Jordan – slash – Walter Peyton leap/dive/jump/stretch, because he now has to cover both the length of Reid’s body and the pile at the line:
All airborne.
I see why he didn’t try it.

Line 'em both up
Line up Peyton at FB, Knowshown and HB, and rock the old Denver roll out pass to the FB. Hillis for 6. The D has to stay home on Knowshon.

1 step back to take 2 forward
I love Hillis’ style of play; he showed tremendous guts and skill last year. that being said, he’s young and is still learning. He’s going to be a good player but has to give the coaches proof that they can count on him consistantly. If he does that, they will reward him fairly with more touches.

Peyton was brought in last year as a desparation move.
He did great in the system and scheme they had but, he hasn’t done too to reward him of the start status this season thus far. As the season wears on he will be a big part of the Broncos success and that is when we will need him. No worries with Hillis.
