Horse Tracks 10/7/09 - Belichick provided McDaniels with an organizational roadmap last season

SN - Broncos' 'clear focus' has Team Turmoil at 4-0 - Albert Breer
"After McDaniels declined interviews for head coach openings in Baltimore and Atlanta in January '08, Belichick took his young assistant's experience to the next level, giving him insight into things (salary cap, draft, contracts, personnel decisions) that coordinators wouldn't normally get. That provided the foundation for the overall structure of his Denver regime, with Brian Xanders his hand-picked GM and ex-Patriots scouts Keith Kidd and Matt Russell trusted to lead the search for system-specific players."

Doom has now out-sacked Mario Williams, who was selected 1st overall in the same draft as Elvis (#126). Says Dumervil of the big bucks, "When you start thinking about contract stuff, that's when you get off course and lose focus. If you just come out and do your job, those type of things will come. I love the game. This is something I love to do."

I was beyond dead wrong...And don't worry — I'll pick against Denver for the fifth straight week when Tom Brady and the Patriots come to town. But even the biggest McDaniels critic from the offseason has to be impressed by this start."

Instant Upgrade
I think this trade instantly upgrades the Jets. They will be that much better when we meet them. Darn.
by Endzone on Oct 7, 2009 9:48 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
instant upgrade for him, too
But we don’t play them this year.

Edwards will.....
probably be in jail or suspended if he stays on the road he is on…on and off field problems have him mired….for the Jets sake just hope a change of scenery is what he needs….

Thanks NYC!
This was BB, but it sure sounds nearly word-for-word like McD, doesn’t it?
"I feel like if the players feel like, as a coach, you can help them, and you know what you’re talking about, and you can tell them things that’ll make them better and help prepare them because they want to prepare, they want to do well and they want to improve. If you can show them you can do that, then they respect you."

Dumerville!
For all the draft whiffs on D, this kid was a great find. Great attitude, great skills, and now an opportunity to excel in a real defense - and he’ll be happy to put it all back on the team. Just excellent!

And about Braylon
How is this punishment for him exactly? I know it’s a contract year for him so the Browns got as much as they could in a trade, but isn’t this an example of rewarding a player for bad behavior? Now he’s on a winning team with a likable coach in a more dynamic place. His tantrums worked apparently.

Since when was “Brian Xanders his hand-picked GM”? I thought Xanders was on staff before McD was hired.
by Endzone on Oct 7, 2009 10:30 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
No
Xanders was hired after McDaniels.

Nope
Xanders was with the team in May 2008 as Assistant General Manager. He was Promoted in Feb 2009 after McD was hired. Xanders reports directly to Bowlen as does McD. The article makes it sound like Xanders is McD’s subordinate.

Agree with you about the article
Although the whole situation with the Goodmans being let go after McDaniels got to Denver was a bit murky.

GAH!!!!
I could choke Woody Paige and his snaky fat head. I HATE that man with a bleeding passion. He’s one that I wouldn’t mind if he disappeared forever.

Now Now
Woody was VERY fair to McD in his early season articles. He had two long interviews with McD and portrayed exactly what McD was trying to do with the team. Woody’s just a skeptic. But I think he loves the Broncs as much as the rest of us do. Last year he predicted them to go 16-0. Imagine his disappointment. Imagine ours. I think Woody is one of the better columnists in the nation actually, we are lucky to have him. He knows sports, he knows the Broncs, he knows Denver and he knows the fans here (remember the average MHR fan is NOT the average DP fan nor Broncs fan, those people are far less inquisitive, knowledgeable and informed). So let’s enjoy it when he gets fully back on the wagon, which is inevitable.

I've never liked Woody...
He has been the biggest pessimist about the Broncos since the joining the post in ’81 and one of Elways biggest critics from day one….rarely did he ever have anything good to say on the Broncs.
As far as him getting on the wagon, I could care less….I stopped taking him seriously back in 1985, and took him for what he was, a bitter columnist in a town he didnt like… at least that is my take ;)

Lamont Jordan
I read the CBS4 article and watched the Cowgirls game again. Lamont Jordan did some really good things in that game. 12-yard run! I know some here have stated that they hate Lamont Jordan, but he is showing me some pretty good stuff now in the regular season. I am voting to cut him some slack.

Quick question
Carlton Powell was signed to Cleveland’s PS.
I thought that the year CP spent on IR last year counted as a “year of service” and made him practice squad- ineligible.

Michael Crabtree
I saw the news today that Michael Crabtree signed. Interesting that there has been little discussion about that here on MHR. Anyway, I don’t think he’s going to help the 49’s much this year. If anything he will hinder them.
