"Absolutely embarrassing. Everything is wrong with it right now. I'm not the least bit happy in a lot of areas. I've seen us be tough and physical to soft and bewildered. If this trend continues, we'll be 8-8 -- or worse -- and certainly out of the division. We won't have the credentials. It's not going well for the San Diego Chargers and we'd better get our act together quickly ... We need to complete games. We've gained absolutely no ground over last year. I'm extremely disappointed."

Well, at least the guy is facing reality....
I’d feel better about them if they had more of a “it could be worse mentality”, but a team that starts facing reality can be dangerous…
"So tell me what happened."
"Well, the last thing I remember is seeing this flash of Blue and Orange and the #22... then everything just went black..."
my biggest fear
is that they’ll replace Norv with a real postseason-type coach, like Cowher.
Maybe we should send AJ a card and let him know things aren’t really that bad in SD. : )
Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

that wont happen
AJ runs that team and wont hire someone with a bigger ego than him.Thats why Marty was fired and replaced with Norv

Yea.....
This could lead to them actually TRYING against us….and while I’m not OVERLY worried about them…..playing with a chip on their shoulder can make any team dangerous. Like Maverick (from Top Gun)…..it doesn’t take a perfect game to win every time….sometimes you just have to play dangerously.

Rivers is always dangerous
As long as he’s their QB, they have a chance. Additionally, Sproles makes their return game strong. But I think Denver’s defense and running game give the Broncos the advantage this year.
Agreed, CB
On all points.
But, still — Rivers needs an offensive line and Sproles does too, when he runs the ball. They’re still not strong there. It’s an opening for the Broncos (ditto the d-line). They’re tougher than some are suggesting, I’ll agree, but like an old lion, they’re vulnerable.
Hillis/Moreno in '09
Rivers reminds me a bit of Elway
making the best of a weak supporting cast. And you know he can do it.
I agree that the Chargers are in trouble. Sproles doesn’t scare me nearly as much out of the backfield as he does on returns, and as you point out, without an OL a running game is pretty much moot anyway. We just need to score enough on their weak D to say ahead of Rivers/VJ/Gates/other WRs being slowed by our tough D.
I thought that might rile a few of the Bronco faithful
check out this write up from Cold Hard Football Facts:
During San Diego ’s Week 2 loss to Baltimore , Rivers surpassed the minimum 1,500 career pass attempts required to qualify for official NFL records.
Following the win over Miami , Rivers’ career stat line now looks like this:
957 of 1,542 (62.1%), 11,688 yards, 7.58 YPA, 81 TD, 39 INT, 92.36 passer rating
If you’re not impressed by the numbers, you should be. He’s fifth all time in passer rating, just ahead of the great Joe Montana. Here’s the top six in career passer rating as of the end of Week 3 of 2009:
- Steve Young (96.81)
- Peyton Manning (95.11)
- Kurt Warner (93.45)
- Tom Brady (92.41)
- Philip Rivers (92.36)
- Joe Montana (92.26)
With an average of 7.58 YPA, Rivers ranks in the top 20 all time in this key indicator of success.
Rivers is also on the very short list of passers in NFL history with a TD to INT ratio of better than 2 to 1 (2.08 to 1). The record is held by Brady, who’s thrown 2.27 TDs for every INT.
That’s winning football, and Rivers is a winner, with a 35-16 (.686) career record following Sunday’s win.
Rivers is pretty good.
Yes he is.
But he’s still a punk.
Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

So was Elway
In his first few years in the league. Old timers may recall that John predicted he’d have more rings than Bradshaw.
Rivers has matured, which is more than I can say for the Bears’ QB this year.
by Leukadian on Oct 7, 2009 3:18 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions
Did he now
I don’t recall that. Do you know if that was before, or after Bradshaw’s angry , bitter rant (“I don’t care if he ever plays”; “To hell with John Elway”) about him on national TV? That’d be interesting to know.
And I’d take issue with you equating Elway’s early behavior to Pip’s- John didn’t ever taunt anyone (much less another player) from the sidelines, I don’t think.
by AllBroncsallday on Oct 7, 2009 5:15 PM MDT up reply actions
Yes He Did Taunt
Elway was a great, HOF quarterback no doubt. As almost every normal human being, he was and is flawed. The worst taunting, I think, was parading his affairs in front of his former wife.
Huh- I don't remember him taunting opponents
On the field like that infamous Rivers/cutler thing, and I watched every game. Maybe I’m not remembering though.
I wasn’t talking about his failings as a human being OFF the field, much less his affairs. Not sure why you mentioned it.
I’m quite aware that every human being is flawed, so I’m not sure what your point was there either.
by AllBroncsallday on Oct 8, 2009 3:22 PM MDT up reply actions
I don't remember Bradshaw's rant
But I know he did not appreciate the presumption of young John. He didn’t have much nice to say about Elway until late in Elway’s career. I think Elway made the boast in his first year or two in the league.
by Leukadian on Oct 7, 2009 10:13 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions
It was something to see, that's for sure
Very angry and bitter- much more than what was appropriate for the situation I thought. I’m pretty sure it came shortly after Elway refused to play for Baltimore, and was traded- he hadn’t yet played. It was clear that he didn’t appreciate the presumption of Elway in this, but the rant was really way, way over the top.
I think I saw it on some Elway special somewhere- maybe when he retired. I really wish I had a copy or link to it.
I always wondered why their relationship seemed so sour, outside of the fact that Bradshaw as a commentator really never had anything positive to say about Elway the player. Remember how awkward it seemed at the post-game between he and Elway after Superbowl 32?
I saw that, and said “Oh. THAT’S why John hates Bradshaw- gotcha.”

THANK YOU!
That makes it four people who have independently come to the same conclusion: lolcopter, Kitten, my brother-in-law, and myself.
Seriously, I don’t care how effective it may be (and it is)…River’s throw is still hideous!
On a semi-related note, I think Rivers is the anti-Vick that way. Vick can make some stunningly gorgeous throws…but they don’t quite do job.
"Don't feed the trolls. Remember to be polite. And please show self-restraint in comment length!" -Me, to myself, because I need constant reminding.
there has always been something that bugs me about the way he throws
I think you have nailed it!!! Thanks for the epiphany

They haven't gained any ground
since being in the AFC title game a few years ago. Rivers is going to have to do it all by himself this year unless their defense gets better.
2009 NBA Champions L.A Lakers
2009 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant
And yet a QB can only do so much.
IF Rivers were to take over and pull this team out of the mire and lead them to the playoffs, they would get blown away in the postseason. I mean schooled. Without a solid Defense they’ll just be fodder in the playoffs.
I’m loving this fall of the Chargers. I couldn’t be happier.

"We've gained no ground"
Of course you haven’t. What did you do in the offseason to think you’d be better this year?
Nice find, John - Thanks
This is interesting – in FA, AJ Smith talked about standing pat. He talked about how his team already had all the pieces it needed. He picked up Kevin Foley – who they cut after drafting Louis Vasquez at guard – and Kevin Burnett who is a good LB. No worry about Jamal Williams having another two surgeries, or McNeill having two, or any of the other obvious holes. Standing pat was his big theme.
Than he complains that they haven’t improved since last season. I’m flabbergasted. What a shock….
As one of my teachers would tell us, “That, my friends, is the Tao of Duh…”
Hillis/Moreno in '09
It's all on him now
After he won his battle with Marty, there really isn’t anyone else to blame. He chose Norv, let Turner leave to Atl, didn’t re-sign Olshanski, and has ignored the gradual decline of Williams. Look, he has made some great picks, but he doesn’t appear to have planned for the future, which is barreling down on him faster than LT can go down with another foot injury. The Broncos bailed AJ out last year with our collapse, but I dare say we won’t extend him such a courtesy again this season.

One more thing
Isn’t this supposed to be said behind closed doors and in the paper. I guess their bye week just got more interesting.
2009 NBA Champions L.A Lakers
2009 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant
True that.
What is the possibility that Shanny might turn up to coach there next year? I believe it’s just as likely as all the other places that are mentioned – Dallas, DC, etc. I would only question just how Shanny would be allowed drafting and personnel decisions and how he and AJ would work together.
by Gristle McThornbody on Oct 7, 2009 2:51 PM MDT up reply actions
I don't think he would get along well with AJ
But who knows, anything is certainly possible, I just hope he doesn’t end up in our division.
I'm still hoping for Washington or Dallas for Shanny

Ah yes...
I suppose if they don’t make it to the playoffs, then that could easily happen. Vikes are looking to take the Division, so unless they go in as a wildcard, then things could get really interesting!

I agree that would be very interesting
It will also be interesting to see what they do next year with their QB situation, there is a big ? there I think.
Never say never....
but I just can’t see Shanahan and A.J. Smith working well together. Both have too strong of personalities to mix well. If Schottenheimer didn’t work out, there’s no way in hell Shanahan would work out. And I think Shanahan knows that. He might be up against the same thing in Dallas with Jerry Jones. Or even the Redskins with Dan Snyder.
Not sure I’d disown him (although I can understand the sentiment), but I’d certainly be on board with the name calling (i.e. rat face). lol

Actually, as I think about it, I say, “Keep it up, AJ!” Given enough time, you may just be able to eventually replace Al Davis as the dictator and destroyer of teams in the NFL.

No, you’re right. He has set the bar pretty high in that regard.

it is certainly a worthy goal for him to try and attain
and I would encourage any GM, excluding ours, to shoot for it. I just don’t think anyone is up to the challenge.

Washington or Dallas
Seem to be the front runners, but I wonder if Shanny would get along well with Jerry jones who has a lot of similarities—minus the need to consume human blood—with Al “The Dark Prince” Davis. Also, I don’t think Shanny would put up with Vinnie “I won’t draft offensive lineman” Cerato who is apparently close to Snyder in Washington. Don’t sleep on a Florida team though. I could see Tampa jumping on the Shannahan express if things don’t begin to improve at least a little. I mean 0% 3rd down efficiency a few weeks back, are you serious? Did they just punt on 2nd down?

Bills, Rams and Browns too!
I think it is who would give him the power of Head Coach / GM – one of the teams mentioned will, remeber it was about this time last year when coaches started getting fired no one expected Shanny at least not that I know of who knows? maybe even the chiefs if they can’t beat the lions : )

"one player away"
One of the comments on BFTB raised the idea that the Chargers have been acting like they’re one player away from contention for a few years now. That explains a lot about their slide into mediocrity, particularly in light of Denver’s recent experience with that approach to team building.
by Leukadian on Oct 7, 2009 4:19 PM MDT reply actions 1 recs
Good point, CB
A lot of teams over the years are lulled into foolishness by the ‘one player way’ motto — as it they won’t have to play the game the year after that even if it was true.
