Horse Tracks 10/9/09 - Buckhalter probably out Sunday; Fred Taylor definitely out for Pats

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZAPPA!!!!!!!
NFL Films - Week 5: Patriots vs. Broncos Preview - Video
DB - Preparing for the Elements - Zach Eisendrath
I like this - an awful lot. McD had the team practice in less-than-ideal weather yesterday (and says they'll continue to do so) in preparation for games with nasty conditions (as Sunday could prove to be). This, rather than practicing within the cozy confines of the bubble. I think back to snow games in recent years and what stands out are a couple of horrific losses on Monday Nights - one to the Colts and that idiot kicker Vanderjagt, another to Jokeland and Jerry Porter.
NFLN - Brandon Marshall interview - Video
BMarsh finally opens up, to Michael Irvin in an interview which will air Sunday morning at 9am ET on NFL Network. He admits to having erred in judgment this summer, letting his emotions getting the best of him and failing to follow his agent's advice.
N - Brandon Marshall: "It's exciting to be a Bronco" - Bob Glauber
"The second game of the season at halftime everyone left (the locker room), getting ready to go back out there and I stayed and I sat in my locker, put my head down with a towel over my head. I thought I was the only one in there and I broke down (in tears). I heard a voice and it was Brian Dawkins. He tapped me four times on my back…he said ‘Come on baby.’ And once I heard that, it’s like my teammates are with me…I’m going to get through this. And I think everything is on track, we’re on track. It’s exciting to be a Bronco." – Marshall on being benched vs. Oakland and how the experience motivated him
USAT - Taught by Belichick, McDaniels giving confidence into Broncos - Jarrett Bell
"He always told me," McDaniels said, "'If you feel that's the best way to do something, then you're probably right. Do it that way. Trust yourself and trust your instincts.' "... "One thing it means," he says, "is that there's a lot of people outside this building that really didn't know what was going on the whole time, anyway. This was never about Brandon and I disliking one another. I love coaching the kid. He practices hard. He's got great energy. He's a young kid, getting better."
Y! - Discarded Dawkins becomes Broncos' treasure - Mike Silver
"Having him here is amazing. I’ve never seen anybody like him. You can see his emotion, how passionate he is about the game. It’s wild. He’s so hyped. He’s in his moment, and you love being around him. Most of all, he can play. Guys at 23 aren’t doing what he’s doing." - Champ on BDawk
NFLTA - Dumervil's defense - Video
I'm sure it burns him, but Jamie Dukes says he thinks the Broncos have a "puncher's chance" Sunday versus the Pats. At least Eisen doesn't let him off scot-free...
NFLN - WK 5 Playbook: Patriots vs. Broncos - Video
Theismann loves the Broncos D, while Sterling loves the Pats' no-name guys.
NFL FanHouse - Picking the Brain of Bill Belichick - Thomas George
"There are a lot of impressive things about him. Very smart. The type of person you can give 10 different things to do and ask him about one of them and he will be right on top of it...The type of person who can juggle a lot of balls. And know where they all are." - Belichick talking about Josh McDaniels in a fascinating interview. Thanks to Elizabeth for the link!
SI - Denver Broncos defense in midst of staggering turnaround - Kerry J. Byrne
"the power of the Denver defense is even more impressive when viewed through the pigskin periscope of the Quality Stats that we use to rate teams at ColdHardFootballFacts.com. Quality Stats are those indicators that have a direct correlation to team-wide success."
DPP - Briefs: Dumervil plans on treating Brady like every other QB - Klis & Jones
BDawk missed practice again with a sore knee and shoulder, instead walking through drills. Ben Hamilton and Alphonso Smith were again limited participants.
DB - Legacy Game Sparks Memorable Weekend - Jim Saccomano
Sacco shares plenty of details about the AFL celebration; it goes a lot farther than just old uniforms - sounds like it'll be a great experience.
DB - Week 5 - Thu: McDaniels - Broncos TV
DB - Week 5 - Wed: Transcripts - McDaniels, Orton, Dawkins
LTC - McDaniels gears up for Patriots - Brian Howell
CSG - Coach says Broncos will practice outdoors in any conditions - Frank Schwab

I'm with this reader and would like to see the Broncos use the QB sneak on short-yardage situations.
DPP - Brady's year of transition - Jeff Legwold
DPP - Analysis: Brady won't get rattled — defense must be solid - Jeff Legwold
DPP - Paige: 5-0 would be a Super sign for Broncos
I'm not sure why previous 5-0 teams have anything at all to do with the Broncos' chances should they win on Sunday, but Woody seems to think he knows...

DB - Tackling Hunger With a Helping Hand - Chris Gentilviso
The wives of several Broncos players worked a shift at a Denver Rescue Mission site Wednesday, serving food to the hungry.
FOX - The truth is sexy ... and so are NFL Truths - Jason Whitlock
"It's comical watching everyone fall over themselves praising Josh McDaniels for Denver's 4-0 start when the Broncos' undefeated start is the No. 1 reason McDaniels should be ripped."
ESPN - John Clayton breaks down the biggest NFL games of Week 5 - John Clayton
"A win or a loss in the showdown won't define McDaniels' start in Denver. The Patriots' former offensive coordinator has exceeded expectations by winning his first four games. His defense, in particular, has exceeded expectations."

During the summer who would have thought that the Marshall situation could have been resolved like this. This is looking better than we could have imagined and with more good times to come.
Dawkins is worth what to this team? 5-6 wins a season?

Josh McDaniels Conference Call – 10/7/09
You can read the transcript and Download the conversation. It is 13:56 long.
Here is a nugget.
Q: On offense, [Eddie] Royal hasn’t had production at the same rate he did last year. What do you attribute that to?
JM: I think production comes and goes sometimes in this system because I don’t think anybody really just tries to force the ball into one player. And, there have been some teams that discourage us from throwing that way sometimes. Other times, there may be a player who is more open or pressure, what have you. So, Eddie Royal’s playing fine. Eddie Royal’s going to have a good season and we know that. I just think it’s a matter of time before Eddie has a number of catches in a game or some big plays that will help us win. He’s a patient guy. He understands our system. We do a lot of different things. A lot of people touch the ball and that’s how we’ve always run the offense there in New England and that’s how we’re running it here. We want our quarterback to get it to the guys that are most open based on the way the defense plays.

Outstanding job again. I’m really excited about where Marshall is now, but I’m even more excited to Marshall. If he can continue to get it together, I think he’s going to be fantastic for us. You could see the emotion on his face after his 51 yard TD last week and you can see that he’s into it now.
I’m going to tape the show on Sunday so that I can watch it later.

The excerpt about Marshall and BDawk brought tears to my eyes. What a story!! THAT’S why I love this game so much.
BDawk is more than a great football player, he’s a great man. To be so tough, and yet have such a big heart, is incredible. We need more Brian Dawkins’ out there, not just in the NFL, but on the streets.

There was a point in the middle of the Dallas game when Dawkins ran off the field after making a nice third down stop. He ran over to the sideline like a mad man, just going crazy. It was a nothing more than a run of the mill third down stop and he was acting like he just won the Super Bowl.
His intensity is difficult to describe for someone with my limited writing skills.
What a great teammate he must be. No wonder he has played on so many winning football teams. I can’t even think of another Denver athlete to compare him to, not an adequate comparison anyway.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
by McGeorge on Oct 9, 2009 7:48 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Couldn’t agree more. He’s been here a matter of months and he’s already the heart and soul of this entire Denver team, and clearly so. That a player can command not just the respect, but to become a true leader and the IDENTITY of the team in such short order is mind blowing.
It makes me laugh very hard thinking back to that column a few days ago saying that Dawkins’ success will make teams take longer looks at “older” free agents in coming years. Brian Dawkins is not comparable to other players. There will not be another Brian Dawkins in free agency next year, or the year after that – unless Brian Dawkins himself is that person.
by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 9, 2009 7:55 AM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
I recall Webster
jumping up and running around like a madman after making a tackle. The difference is that Dawkins’ stop was a real stop, and Webster would do it after he chased someone down that had already run past him for a first down. I don’t think Webster really got that tackling is only the means to an end, the end being the winning of the game. There is more to it, like tackling BEFORE the runner reaches the first down marker. One of those bad apples?
Wherever you go, there you are.
by YosemiteSam on Oct 9, 2009 8:06 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve said this before. Webster lead the NFL in inappropriate celebrations in 2008. Jamie Winborn was a close 2nd.
I don’t like players that celebrate every tackle that held the other team out of the end-zone. I was under the impression the other team was not supposed to score a TD on every play, but Slowik and Denver’s 2008 D sure made it seem possible.
Those were dark days.

Enough with the NW. I bought a bottle of 15-year-old scotch in February, and was more than happy to pretend it was a gift to myself in honor of that joker being shown the door. Goodell is really wuss-ifying the NFL. I wonder how much of fine DJ Williams is going to receive for crushing Roy Williams. Seriously, would not surprise me if he got fined for that smack down, even thought it was 100% within the rules.
Goodell and his discipline committee are the worst. BTW, did you Goodell makes $21,000,00 a year. I nearly passed out when I read that in a NFL.com article earlier this year. $21,000,000!

Goodell is not making $21 million. He’s making less than half of that much. Still a lot, yes. But he also runs a league which generates billions.
D.J. is not getting fined. Those decisions all came down yesterday.
by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 9, 2009 7:35 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks NYC.
So Goodell was making $14,000,000 per year before he took at 20% pay cut down to $11,200,000 per year. Either way (any way), it’s disgusting. If the NFL wants to protect their retired players, may I suggest taking some of Goodell’s annual salary and allocating to the men that built up the sport and not the suits trying to govern this cash cow.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
by McGeorge on Oct 9, 2009 7:54 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Personally, I think someone who runs a $4.5 billion business as well as Goodell does earns that pay. Yes, retired players need to be taken care of; but there are plenty of more appropriate places those funds can come from than Goodell’s compensation.
I don’t know how much the current players contribute to the pension fund, but surely it’s not enough. I’m sure the same can be said for the league’s/teams contributions.

The guy runs a multi-billion dollar venture. His compensation is hardly obscene.
by JeffG on Oct 9, 2009 8:14 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
The players are the reason the NFL is a multi-billion dollar venture. Not Goodell.
There are thousands upon thousands of talented business men and women that could do exactly what Goodell does. He inherited a cash cow and he hasn’t killed it yet. Just wait for the CBA mess to blow up, which is a real possibility. So congrats Roger, give yourself $14,000,000 per year for who knows what.
Several AIG C-level folks ran a multibillion dollar venture without a clear understanding of the credit default swaps that made them wealthy and then put them instantly billions of dollars into the red. The NFL is facing its own crisis with the CBA so I say let Goodell solve the CBA issues before heaping tens of millions of dollars a year upon the man. As someone that believes in incentives for performance, this makes far more sense to me.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
by McGeorge on Oct 9, 2009 8:42 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Where’d you come up with $14 million? The article above said his 2008 comp was $11.2 million, and this year he’d be making 20% less than that. By my count, that’s $8.96 million.
Honestly, your presumption that Goodell and Co. will screw up the CBA talks sounds a lot like your expectations of McDaniels and Team from just a few short weeks ago – that of a top-5 2010 draft choice…
by Douglas A. Lee on Oct 9, 2009 9:07 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope that doesn’t come across too sharply, McG. If it does/did, I apologize. I just think perhaps you should cut the guy (Goodell) a bit of slack rather than just presume that he’s going to make a mess of things – just like McDaniels deserved our patience (and has even now earned himself some slack, to boot).

I agree with McGeorge 100% on this — the fact that people love the game of football does not mean the guy at the top does a spectacular job. The ease with which monopoly money is doled out to execs is obscene, if only because it becomes, in a weird way, proof of performance — if the dude earns 250 times the nation’s median household income, he must be doing a great job!
Thanks to the NFLPA, pro football is one of the only industries in the country in which labor gets paid anywhere near what management does. That’s wonderful. I go to the game to see guys play, not to see an obscenely rich Canadian prance around in fur coats. I’d rather my money go into Ryan Clady’s pocket — heck, even Richard Seymour’s pocket — than into Dan Snyder’s or Bud Adams’. But that’s just me.
The sad part of all this is that if Goodell and management get their way — and given the glaring non-enforcement of basic collective bargaining laws in this country, they will — that’s going to change. Post-lockout, I would expect player pay to stagnate or even decline as league revenues run Northward.
by Chibronx on Oct 9, 2009 9:38 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who ever said he did a spectacular job?
All I said was that the compensation is commensurate to the obligation. He’s running a multi-billion dollar business.
Without that owner money, you have no league.
So yeah, it is just you.
by JeffG on Oct 9, 2009 11:44 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've gotta agree with McG here....
Goodell does not run the NFL, in the sense that Jack Welsh ran GE. for that matter, the NFL is not a multi-billion dollar business in the sense that GE or MS are businesses. The NFL is a confederation of 32 billions dollar businesses. But each of those is a semi-autonomous business being run by its own ownership and management. Goodell merely presides over the league offices – somewhat like being the manager of the home office.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Oct 9, 2009 3:45 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
The suits have their place, but they are not why the NFL is a multi-billion dollar venture- it’s the players that are mostly responsible for that.
Also agree with Chibronx- I expect to see player salaries stagnate while the suits make even more with the new CBA. Sad, IMO.

That would play into some folks thoughts. I have to say, though – I don’t read Whitlock (I read a couple of paragraphs because nyc put him on Tracks, and then stopped, having only lost a few points off my IQ). The vast majority of the commentators and pundits are firmly on the Denver Bandwagon. We’re not getting much in the way of disrespect – most folks are astounded, but giving Denver McDaniels and the team a lot of credit. Winning solves all. the current MSM POV, if there is one, is that we’re a very good team.

about our Broncos has a common thread……BDawk!!! We all should be so thankful to have him, you don’t find leaders like that in Free Agency hardly ever!!!!

Weather could be our 12th player on the field
If the weather is bad during the game, I think Brady’s effectiveness and for that matter the Pats’ potential pass-heavy game plan could be in serious jeopardy. With Fred Taylor out (btw, couldn’t find the article that says that), this could be a serious leg-up for our Broncos.

Look under the Pats news
Taylor had surgery on his ankle yesterday and may actually miss the rest of the season, not just Sunday

Thanks nycbroncosfan. I usually just look at the one’s regarding the Broncos.

Yeah
That means Brady’s knee will be hurting in the cold weather.

Whitlock is somewhat right
I haven’t posted in 3 months….I always tell my brother (who loves the broncos like I do) I always loved what McDaniels was doing with the defense and even the Patriot offense and that I HATED trading Cutler. Just 2 days ago talking to my brother I said we would be a Super Bowl threat with Cutler still here and that it was a shame he wasn’t here. No matter what Orton tastes like cold chicken soup to me. I hate watching him be our QB. (I do like the wins though)
The difference between me and Whitlock is I think that McDaniels can mold another QB so I don’t give up hope. I think Kevin O’Connell from the Jets would still be a good target. He is from my hometown San Diego and he is a freak athlete. I admit that McDaniels might be a special type of coach so that is super encouraging.

What about Brandstater? None of us know what McDaniels sees of his future…

Could be good
I still like a premium athlete at the position….I know McDaniels has said you don’t need a strong arm to succeed or super scrambling ability but he wants accuracy….I want both thats all

Humidity?
A humid cold penetrates the skin. in Colorado as long as your covered up. Its OK.

Moving To Colorado
I lived in St Louis just before moving to Denver. The humidity there in was brutal year round. I did not feel a need to wear a winter coat in Denver for three years after I moved here because of the low humidity in Colorado.

Legwold
Legwold has good articles from time to time. I have to disagree with this one. Brady does get rattled under pressure. We will be able to rattle him. Don’t you think?
by Endzone on Oct 9, 2009 9:06 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I do
Seeing him skip out of the way when Suggs grazed his knee last week tells me it’s on his mind a lot. How could it not?

Brady can most definitely be rattled at this point in time. Perhaps not later as he gains confidence, but now for certain.

A couple of FOX stories late for nyc's tracks
You have to go through their picture gallery article Week 5’s premium NFL matchups Preview&photo=10179632 before you find these:
Patriots at Broncos (Fox Sports Fantasy)
The Preview writeup is not bad. But I take issue with the Fantasy one. It states that Orton is “…never going to be a top-notch QB, but at least he’s a serviceable one if your regular starter is sitting this week out.” Cripes! Orton is getting better every week. Maybe he just isn’t as sexy as that stoner brown leather couch Whitlock. (How you doin baby?)

profootballweekly QB comparisons - Danyluk
Quarterbacks now back in vogue
Denver — Brian Griese vs. Kyle Orton. I hate this matchup. No real distinctions emerge. Griese looked like he’d develop but never came around. Orton looks like he can’t develop but what about the 25-12 record as a starter? 7-Up or Sprite, kids? Another joyless tie.
To say that Orton looks like he can’t develop is just plain wrong. At least Danyluk points to his win record.

The Rodney Dangerfield
of NFL QBs. I’m so sick of that crap. When Orton outplays Brady on Sunday, I wonder what these critics will come up with next week?

Josina Anderson on Twitter
is claiming she ‘sqaushed a beeef’ between an unnamed player (presumably Marshall) and McDaniels. Says “McD owes me one”.
She pretty famously overrates her own impact on the Denver sports scene, so have your wheelbarrow of salt grains ready.

wow -a cornucopia of stuff this morning! Thanks NYC! This is a feast!
Two guys I keep liking the more I hear from/of them. Dawkins and McDaniels. Wow! The Bell Article in USAToday was a great read. He summed up the whole Cutler thing in very different terms than I’ve read anywhere else in the MSM or even local media.
He traded Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears after the Pro Bowl quarterback balked at coaching pointers and the relationship quickly turned to ashes. In exchange, McDaniels got the unspectacular Kyle Orton from the Bears (and two first-round picks, and a third-round pick).
No Cassel. No non-returned phone calls. Just a balking QB who didn’t want to play. Later in the article McDaniels is asked why he didn’t just trade away the headache that was Marshall the same way Cutler was traded. “Yesterday,” was Josh’s response – referring to Brandon’s TD.
"That’s a great example of ‘why not trade him,’ " McDaniels said. “He’s a great football player and a good kid, and I felt like we would get to this point.”
Huh. Well glad Marshall is starting to buy in! I know Champ is sold!
“Just being under Josh McDaniels for a few months now, he’s a guy that is going to have you as prepared as you can be for a game and that’s something that throughout my 11 years I haven’t had a lot of,” Bailey told New England reporters during a conference call this week. “I’ve had some great coaches, including Shanahan, but he’s definitely one of a kind in the way he approaches the game.”
One-of-a-kind special coach. What more is there to say? Yes, sir. Thank you, sir!
