We got exposed today

Okay it's a slightly inflammatory headline but I figured that for my first fan post I would make a splash. With that said it's still true. The game against  Baltimore highlighted some weaknesses that we'd been covering for, I don't however think that the world is ending just that other teams are going to try to do what Baltimore did.

On offense we are weak on the interior of the O-line and facing the B-more d-line was just too much for us. Ngata and Gregg was just too much for us. Orton is smart and good but he's not going to win the game with that kind of pressure. I think that other teams are going to really try to pressure us up the middle, I don't however think that other teams have Ngata and Gregg so I think we'll see it, but it won't work as well for other teams. There was just too much pressure to take advantage of their secondary.

On Defense our d-line is just not good enough to demand the double teams that are going to keep the Tackles off of the OLB. But let's be fair about this Gaither and Oher are a good tandem, even with that there were times that we were getting pressure it just wasn't quite fast enough. A better d-line might have meant blocking the OLB with a RB or TE which would have made a huge difference. Again the Ravens have a pretty good tandem in Gaither and Oher so other teams aren't going to be able to nullify DOOOOOOOM with just their tackles like this, so even if other teams try it I don't think they will succeed quite this well.

Really I don't think I'm saying anything that people here didn't already know and I still believe that we are going 18-1.

I think the

D did just fine. They defended a short field most of the first half and was the reason we were in the game in the first place. The only problem I saw was bringing Joe down. We defended the run well until the game got out of hand.

"Pleased? We are excited about the proposition of going forward from where we are right now. Pleased? I don't know if you want to say pleased. You may want to hang your hat on pleased. I don't want to hang my hat on nothing right now."

-Brian Dawkins, on the play of the defense

Once he gets his hands on you, there's not much you're going to do. Then you can't outrun him, you can't run around him, you can't really run him over -- so you've just got to deal with it."

I get the short field but...

I’m never going to think that giving up 30 points is just fine.

Guess what ...

Every team has weaknesses that get exposed … that is why they play more than one game. The Ravens played a very good game.

Sure and I think that ours aren’t anywhere near as bad as what a bunch of other teams have, and that the Ravens were a pretty bad match up for us.

Our d-line

had a lot of pressure nullified by holding that wasn’t called. I’m not too worried about the D, or the D-line.

I am worried about specifically Hamilton. Weigs occasionally gets beat, but Hamilton is consistently getting pushed into the backfield on passing and rushing plays, especially big guys like Wilfork, Ngata, and Gregg. I used to be a fairly big fan of Hamilton, I don’t know if his game has fallen off or if he always played like this and I didn’t notice too much, but it is a huge concern, you are right.

Regarding the O-Line

Didn’t Ryan Harris go down early in the game? Don’t undervalue what he brings to that line….

MARK IT ZERO!!!!
Dude, this is a league game, this determines who enters the next round robin. Am I wrong? Am I wrong?
You mark that frame an 8, and you're entering a world of pain.

That’s a really good point too, I’m okay with Polumbus as a back up, but i love Harris as our starters.

I’m actually pretty relieved that the weaknesses are what we thought they were because it takes the pressure of an undefeated season off and we clearly know how to deal with these problems because we’ve been doing it for six other games.

It's hard not to think that McDaniels really wanted to lose this game to take the undefeated pressure off.

One would hate to think that but, with what we all witnessed it did seem suspect of some kind of mishandling on the coaches part. Now they can focus on the latter stages of this season with a 6-1 record and a solid 2 game lead in the AFCW. Not saying McDaniels would throw the game but, it does eleviate the pressure doesn’t it?

The Ravens did a heck of a job at pressuring us on offense.

The offensive coordinator (McDaniels/McCoy) didn’t do anything to dwart the rush. Their are plays that stop the onslaught as the Ravens brought and they didn’t do it. Pure and simple. Our OLine was pressured all day and what could anyone expect out of them. Playcalling on O was suspect and probably will be addressed by greater football minds than me. Not blind though, so bring your best analysis fellas.

About the play calling

I would have liked to have seen some bootlegs and roll outs, among other things, because their strength is up the middle which is where our two smaller guys are. Anybody have an idea about how orton does on the move?

And

We could have had more sacks. Give Flacco credit, he missed getting sacked numerous times where other QB’s would have probably went down.

Tell us how you really feel Kosyong

Not trying to start anything but Orton has played well against some pretty good defenses this year.

I think the protection needs work and theres no doubt in my mind, the coaches will be working long and hard on a number of things this week.

No need to jump off after one loss but suit yourself.

As for me I like the fact the intensity from the defense was evident all day and thats not something I would have said about any of the three phases on a consistent basis last year.

I’m looking forward to the Pittsburgh game and how the entire team reacts following a loss.

The QB position is set.

by broncofaninIL on Nov 1, 2009 8:40 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

QB is just one position

I am really sick of people talking about a QB centered league. Its just on e position on the team. The QB could be Superman, and with no protection, running game, dropped passes, poor defense the team still loses. I think I had to throw something at the TV on draft day when Steve Young was slamming the Broncos for not going after Mark Sanchez because the QB was all that mattered. Logic like that would still have us stuck with Cutler winning one game and throwing away another for the next 10 years. No thanks. Someone make a list of Superbowl winning QB’s who are generally regarded as sucking. its almost as long if not longer than the list of “great” super bowl winning QBs. And what about all the great QB’s that never won a Superbowl? Elway won 2, but not till he had Terrell Davis and a complete team around him. Orton may or may not prove to be the long term answer, but he has done exactly what’s been asked of him up until this point and I will be rooting for him to continue to do exactly that.

Indescision is the key to flexibility

Orton was clearly not the main issue

He completed 62% if his passes he just didn’t have the time to complete a long pass. It was a poor match up for us becuase our O-line weakness is smaller guys in the middle and their strength is big guys in the middle.

It would have helped to have a more mobile QB but you’ve got to look deeper than that the problem all season has been pressure up the middle that’s where you’ve got to work on it.

by Fan in Exile on Nov 2, 2009 6:48 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

3rd down

The inability of the defense to stop 3rd and longs this game was a killer. The Ravens have a good pair of Otackles and a large QB who is allusive enough int he pocket to avoid sacks. Their offense stayed on the field and our offense couldn’t. The ravens exploited the interior of our Oline with the interior of their Dline forcing us to throw short and try and get first down by RAC. If you tackle well, and the Ravens did, this is a great strategy. In fact, this is the strategy that the Broncos have used all season. If you can get pressure by rushing 4 or 5, you can be very successful on defense.
