Ravens toss Broncos fans for standing
Read this headline again. This is a systematic weeding out attempt by the Baltimore Ravens staff. I will post a link to a YouTube video later.
What happened... my friends and I were standing (with our hands in our pockets) in Section 113 Row 1 (end zone behind FG posts) while the Broncos were on D and were told by the Ravens staff to sit down. Jon Cline (VP of Ravens security) told us we're "outta here" if we stand up again.
He said we could only stand up on a "majority rules" basis and said it was grey. He said we could only stand up on "things like 3rd downs or celebrating a touchdown". Well we were eventually tossed midway through the 2nd quarter for standing with our hands in our pockets (well aware we had many eyes on us and trying to be model fans AND yell for the Broncs) while the Broncos were on 3rd down.
I have added the videos to the post! - Guru

I understand your frustration but
this is not government action, so freedom of speech does not apply. This is a private corporation that can set their own rules on their property. Only if stadium was government-owned would it be a problem.
As it stands, we disagree with what they did, but there’s no violation of the Constitution here

Actually - The Ravens' stadium is not private
You would be right about it being private, if it was owned by the Ravens’, but the Stadium (M&T Bank Stadium) is owned by the Maryland Stadium Authority, which is a governmentally administrated board of directorys created by the Maryland General Assembly and with board members appointed by the Maryland state governor.
So, it’s actually public property, and freedom of speech is protected there.

But if they told you, you could stand on 3rd downs, then why did you get kicked out when you were standing on 3rd down.
Were you standing on 3rd down WHEN you got kicked out, or were you standing up on all down after they said no. Either way, that was ridiculus of them to do that.

“any team run by someone who will uproot one of the most storied franchises in nfl history is sure to follow his d-bag example”
1) Modell has not owned this team in over 5 years.
2) Do you use this same quote about the Colts ( a more storied franchise than the browns) who were uprooted from Baltimore??
3) Unfortunate that this happened to him but don’t generalize the team based on a few employees. Some of these policies have come from issues that have arisen with rowdy fans from opposing teams, unlike Denver, there are 5 other NFL teams within a 4 hour drive. It can get crazy in the stands quickly (Beer + idiots = a problem)

Easy buddy
You can be mad at the Ravens and their crappy rules, but generalizing the entire city because of that is ridiculous. I live just outside Baltimore and frequent there a lot (although I am a Steelers fan). The city is awesome, even though it does have its bad portions. But what major city does not?
I understand your frustration and definitely agree that their rules their are bush league and they treat opposing fans like dirt. I’ve seen it first hand being a Steelers fan who has attended the Ravens/Steelers game the last 6 years in Baltimore.
However, don’t throw the city down the toilet because of the jerk Ravens.

No Fun League.
It’s not college football so I imagine the NFL will have some by laws against standing in front of other fans and obstructing their view (which will be their excuse). Good luck, but I think you will be SOL. Or maybe they will give you tickets to another Ravens game (which won’t be vs Denver).

I for one applaud it
Standing should be disallowed at any time. If you want to stand, buy standing room only tickets. When I have paid for a seat it is because I want to sit and I resent having to get on my feet because the jerk in front of me is blocking my view.Actually I never do. Sometimes I put up with being unable to see for awhile, and sometimes I yell at the offender to sit down. This rarely works of course. A far better strategy is a slight kick to the back of the knee. It works EVERY time but you have to be careful to whom you administer this solution as it can easily backfire

Sure, if someone jumps up in the excitement of the moment
to celebrate a touchdown or something, that is understandable but to just stand and watch the game while everybody else is sitting down is just obnoxious and the offenders most definitely deserve to be thrown out. No doubt they thought the game was lost and didn’t really care to stay anyway so they decided to make this idiotic gesture.

I would be livid right now. I’m not trying to slow your rage or anything, however you do need to be careful about what you say because it could be taken the wrong way and get you into some trouble.
With that said, I agree with your statement about warmick being wrong. It’s behavior (or lack of behavior?) like this that makes the stadium in Denver a shell of it’s Mile High predecessor.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 1, 2009 7:30 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
True
however, I think this is happening across the NFL due to increased ticket prices. There are a lot more corporate seats in stadiums now to entertain clients that either don’t really care or don’t do anything except sit and clap.
by DieselDan on Nov 1, 2009 7:33 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
That's definitely true.
I can understand this happening, but if they want to have seats like that, they can be in boxes so that the noise won’t have to penetrate their cocktail party and real fans won’t have to be thrown out of stadiums for standing up.

STOOD
I had Ravens fans right behind me saying their view wasn’t affected. That on top of the fact that 1/4 of the stadium was standing???
Some might say I asked for it but we did everything we could to be “cool” with the security guy that had a hard on for us.
Trust me nothing was going to work except sitting all game long.

It's too bad you don't have video of the actual point of ejection
while you were in the stands. It’s hard to get an objective view of the situation without that. THese videos show these security officers doing their job…. I don’t see them being rude to you. No one laid a hand on you, and the video doesn’t show what you were removed for. I assume everything happened as you say, and if so, I would think you have a right to be standing, but I can’t know all that happened from these videos.

I apologize on behalf of the Ravens. I cannot believe they did something like this to you guys. I was at the game today, and had no problems with the Broncos fans and around my section.
I hope you take action against the the people who threw you out. They had no right to throw you out of the game for cheering on your team.
And to the blogger Warmick, you sound idiotic for saying that fans should not be standing if they you do not have standing club seats. My section and I were standing half of the game. We were standing during third downs on defense, and I am sure the people who were thrown out were as well. For the simple fact of enjoying the game then being thrown out, just terrible.
Even though the Ravens are my team, please take action as soon as possible.

There's a much much much better way
I completely empathize with you, but there is a much much more effective way to make your case these days. The NFLs lawyers are legendary tough, and (as we’ve seen) it’s tough slogging when you are fighting against your opponent’s strength. But as with any major consumer-driven corporation, they have a huge weakness.
Have you seen this?
After United Airlines broke the guy’s guitar, he posted this and United’s stock was devalued about 10% in one week. That my friend is the power of the consumer!!
SO … while your YouTubes are pretty empassioned and discussion worthy, I’d encourage you to get a little creative and tell the whole story — even get some friends to help you reenact it with comic flourishes! — get it polished, film it, and go viral. You can show yourselves surrounded by Baltimore fans who are standing regularly and without discretion, and then show what happened to you guys. The Ravens’ marketing arm will HATE it.
Food for thought! I’d LOVE to see something like that!

the fallout
In response to the above video I mentioned:
Taylor Guitars responded offering support
Comedians responded mocking the airline
Other musicians came forward with similar complaints.
And, of course, Adolf Hitler was outraged.
Ultimately, the video’s impact amounted to this:
United Breaks Guitars, has now been played 3,515,357 times on YouTube, become a smash hit on iTunes, and has resulted in Carroll’s rather bemused appearance on every major news network in America. Meanwhile, within four days of the song going online, the gathering thunderclouds of bad PR caused United Airlines’ stock price to suffer a mid-flight stall, and it plunged by 10 per cent, costing shareholders $180 million. Which, incidentally, would have bought Carroll more than 51,000 replacement guitars.
A little inspiration should the Ravens not apologize and refund your tickets.

i'm sorry this happened to you jimmyray...mostly.
(here comes the but, and this may not be a popular opinion)
Jon Cline (VP of Ravens security) told us we’re “outta here” if we stand up again.
at which point you say you stood (with your hands in your pockets) trying to be model fans ? after you were instructed not to do so ? on private property ?
and i guess this is where the disconnect is for me.
after being instructed not to do something, you then do so anyway (as you have rights!), and then play the victim card, threaten litigation, and videotape names/badges of people who are simply doing as they are paid/instructed to do ?
i sort of hope you do litigate…as after driving all day to see the game, laying out the bucks for tickets, petrol, drinks and food etc, you still haven’t learned much of anything, except perhaps that Ravens security punts better than Mitch Berger.
maybe i’m missing something in the translation ? i want to be wrong about this….

I have been yelled at numerous times for standing in front of my seats
at various different events – and its actually usually when I’m rooting for the home team (although there was one time at a golf tournament when Tiger was teeing off – but I digress…). My response is always the same “I’m sure you have a nice TV at home – go sit on your couch.” While this situation sounds like it wasn’t directly a result of other fans telling you to sit – it was also probably an indirect result of that * type * of “fan.”
This also reminds me of the Chef’s Policy that came out a couple of years ago that specifically barred standing. Not sure if that’s still in place though.
As others have already stated – my guess is that you probably don’t have much of a legal case here – but hopefully this gets some love on the internets and the court of public opinion gets you somewhere.

Shades of Fort McHenry
This tyranical censorship by the Ravens staff is petty, and smacks of poutry fertilizer. All this in the shadow of Fort McHenry where our national anthem was penned during America’s fight against such tyranny. Baltimore should hang it’s head in shame. The Ravens may have won the game, but lost integrity. Francis scott Key must be spinning right about now…..

Francis Scott Key’s grandson & the mayor of Baltimore were imprisoned in Fort McHenry during the Civil War as Baltimore was under Marshall law for supporting the South. Ironically the guns of the fort were turned on the city.
The tyranny began in the 1860’s not at the recent Ravens/Broncos game

the most you MIGHT be able to get back is the cost of your tickets. If you write a stinker to the ravens organization and the NFL, you can really blow this up. I think if everyone on MHR can bring up the view count for the videos, through posting it on facebook, sending it to friends, or hell, even watching it yourself over and over you can write to the league and say hey this many ppl have viewed this video and its not going away. Make a big deal about it and you might hear back from them.

Hmm
I just happened to see this during my Sunday internet jog of the SBNation NFL sites- definitely an interesting story here. I can sympathize with the fact that you were thrown out for something so trivial and nonsensical, but I think it really boils down to the fact that you were on their property, agreed to play by their rules, were warned to stop your actions, and you continued them and ignored what you were told. I completely understand where you’re coming from (standing for your rights, not taking it in the rear from security, etc), but I just can’t see how you have any sort of standing ground on the situation. Obviously, I know as much as you guys, but that’s just my initial impression.
But hey, go ahead and publicize it. Anything negative that happens in Baltimore is good news.

you were an opposing fan who didn’t listen to security. If I had front row tickets I would have sat down and wouldn’t have missed the game. There are some battles worth fighting and this isn’t one of them.
If the game was at Mile High and opposing fans refused to sit down at the appropriate time, they would probably get the same treatment from both our fans and security.

The videos only show the “after” part of this whole incident. I have served as a security guard at various events. Your videos show nothing as to what may have caused them to ask you to leave. Baltimore an unfriendly environment for sure...
I have been to many home broncos games as well as several away games. I was living in DC in 2002 and went to the broncos game in Baltimore. My friend and I can assure you we were model fans, we celebrated when appropriate but the broncos looked terrible in that game (why the heck we can’t play well there is beyond me) so we were pretty silent most of the game. Despite that, Baltimore fans were yelling at us and pushing us the whole time. We asked security to calm them down but security refused to do anything. Around the end of the third quarter, the broncos scored and my friend and I celebrated, at which point a fan poured beer on us. Again, security did nothing. My family has season tickets to the broncos and I’ve been to many games where we politely tolerated opponents fans. In fact I would say we are down right accomodating to them, sometimes even congratulating them when their team scores. Even raiders fans!

Your constitutional right
is that you don’t have to go to their stadium to watch games. If security tells you to sit down, then you better sit down and just know that as a private business they have the right to refuse service to anyone.
I would be mad too but the bottom line is that if I go some place with stupid rules, then I have to either act within those rules or don’t go there.

Where you might be wrong is...
… this is the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens are a franchise of the NFL, not a private company. They cannot simply do as they please without oversight from the league office.
The NFL has, in the best, done a very good job ensuring that a consistent and quality product is maintained in all 32 team cities. Part of that is ensuring that consistent and non-biased fan rules are maintained.
by jimmyray on Nov 2, 2009 6:39 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I could be quite wrong...
..because I am not an expert in things like that. But What I do know is that I have been able to attend quite a few Red Wing games in Joe Louis Arena wearing my Avalanche jersey and Colt games at the RCA Dome wearing my Bronco jersey and have managed to escape every time without being beat up or escorted out by security.
I don’t think I would try that in Oakland, call me a chicken if you want but the point is that most people at games just want to have fun. Don’t rock the boat and chances are, that can be done without anyone getting kicked out or sued.

I'm not surprised you guys were ejected
You’re wearing visitor’s jerseys and standing the entire game in front of people who are always there with their season tickets and Personal Seat Licenses. No problem standing a cheering specific plays and at key moments, but all game!? I know in student sections at college games they do and in certain other sports and specific sections, but the front row at another team’s stadium? I’m sorry you had a bad experience but I promise you if I was at your stadium flashing my Ravens colors and refusing to sit down for a second your fans would have me out as well.
Too bad you just didn’t accept the rules regardless of your opinion of them and just enjoyed the game.

Never seen it happen in Denver
… sounds like an east-coast thing at first blush. But again, I had this EXACT same situation happen in NE and SD and both times several discussions with upper level security finally got them around to understanding that you’re allowed to stand in front of your seat.
That’s the only reason I saw this through. I was told by a league security exec (suit) in NE on MNF last year what my “rights” were. And that was that… besides the Southies screaming “DIABETES” in my ear the rest of the night in ref to that one QB.
You seem like a good guy Bruce…. I just think you’ve got us wrong on this. That’s the way the internet works though. No matter how much I type I can’t go back in the past and get the idea to video the incident at an earlier stage.

In the Way of the Bronco Management Box
OK, I was about 5 rows below the box for the opposing team management at M&T yesterday and I stood up a lot and am sure that I blocked Patrick Bowlen’s view at one time or another. I was wearing my brown Bronco Legacy hoodie and my vertical striped socks from that game.
No one from either team’s orientation asked me to sit down. Now, if they had, I probably would have asked them what criteria we should use as to sitting or standing. I think 3rd down situations are logical situations for standing.
Everyone treated me with courtesy yesterday. It was a fun game, just not one that the Broncos came in with their best effort.

You spend several hundred dollars
taking your family to the game. Whenever something exciting happens, the morons in front of you jump to their feet. The little guy sitting next to you, who is shorter standing than a grown man is sitting down, sees only the part of the game when the players meet on the sideline during timeouts. You can, of course lift him up as you get to your feet yourself. Taking turns with being lifted, he and his two little buddies actually do end up seeing almost a third of the game then (and you get a good workout in the bargain).
Then there is the self absorbed nitwit James Williamson, aka Jimmyray putting himself on display by standing continuously in the front row (at the railing) and certainly not as a result of impulsive excitement (both hands in his pockets) saying: "Nobody complained." Well, as we have learned on this very board, complaining may earn you a broken nose but that aside, it shouldn’t be necessary for anyone to have to ask somebody to act in the interest of everybody.
"But other than the little boy who had a birthday party (and who said he didn’t mind) there were no small children" James "jimmyray" Williamson may claim. What about the adult woman who stands less than 5 feet? What about the guy with the bum knee and the crutches who has trouble getting to his feet? There was no guy with crutches you say? What about the guy with the bum knee and no crutches who has trouble getting to his feet? What about me, who wants to focus on the game rather than being distracted by the idiot who even if he doesn’t block the view does ruin the enjoyment by his persistent insistence on distracting my attention with his narcissistic presence?
It is not up to individuals to check and see (or inquire) whether anybody behind him may be bothered by completely unnecessary exhibitionism. If everybody remains seated, everybody can see and all can enjoy the game. I don’t know why that viewpoint should be castigated while a conceited fool like jimmyray should be buried in sympathy for self imposed victimhood but it appears even Mile High Report has to suffer under an abundance of narrow minded simpletons.
I do hope you go through with your lawsuit Jimmyray. Chances that you can find a lawyer willing to take on such an obvious loser cause is remote but assuming you do and assuming against all odds you win, you may by then well have bankrupted yourself in order to get your ticket price refunded. You can then change your moniker to Sillypay

Come on dude
I can remember going to games as a kid whe I was short and you know what I did, stood on my chair if I couldn’t see. Next you want to kick people out of concerts for standing up, if you want to “enjoy” the game without being distrurbed by the pressence of other fans who are excited, go buy a box seat and snife some wine and eat some cheese, cause no one up there is watching the game anyways. Or simply save your money, buy a nice HD TV and sit in the comfort of your home.

Here's another question Warmick
Let’s suppose the shoe is on the other foot, maybe I have a medical condition with blood clots and sitting for prolonged times is not recommended, am I not allowed to stand for the chance of offending the jack ass behind me, or should I sit and risk a heart attack or stroke. You propose a bunch of hypothetical BS, guys with a bum knee or whatever can sit in the handicapped section where there view is not obstructed. Short women generally can find an easy way to view the game or event by asking to move one place or another, I know my wife is short and goes to plenty of concerts where we are standing the entire night on the floor or in the arena, she finds a good place and parks herself there.

but a movie theatre
is a place where it is widely accepted practice to maintain your seat the whole time, while maintaining a clear line of site… i might also add 2 things.
taking your hat off inside is considered morally and politically correct anyways
movie theatres by and lagre have created stadium seating (at least in colorado springs cinemark on powers) to combat something like a hat, or a beach ball… yes happened one time when i was there.
a Football stadium on the other hand, is place where people yell, stand, cheer, jeer, and release a high level of emotion for 60 + minutes.
watch highlights or better yet, segments of America’s game, the fans are not sitting down, nor being asked to leave the stadium.

You are talking about totally different situations, a movie theatre nobody stands up unless they want to go to the restroom or get a snack, again, am I going to get pissed because someone has to use the restroom, or should I yell at them and be asertive and say, sit in your seat and piss your pants because you are ruining my view of the movie. Your arguement doesn’t hold much water.

NFL Fans code of conduct post from last year:
The code of conduct is intended to address behavior that detracts from the gameday experience. Any fan in violation of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games.
“The National Football League and its teams are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all fans, both in the stadium and in the parking lot. We want all fans attending our games to enjoy the experience in a responsible fashion. When attending a game, you are required to refrain from the following behaviors:
…. Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel…”
From a totally neutral standpoint, because there is a time for sitting and a time for standing, and although I don’t imagine you were “detracting from the game day experience”, you evidently did fail to follow the instructions of stadium personnel so rightly or wrongly, you did violate the fans code of conduct.

... but their unwritten rule is...
… you can only stand when the home team crowd stands. That’s what it boils down to.
by jimmyray on Nov 2, 2009 12:38 PM MST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Why shouldln’t that be the unwritten rule… it is the home team’s stadium. The home team fans pay a pretty penny as season ticket holders to go to the games. If the attendents asked you to sit then you needed to comply. Maybe someone couldn’t see because of your standing and ended up complaining. And as a guest and per the “code of conduct” if someone complains the attendents have to take action if you refuse to listen. I know that I took my son to a game and a couple of guys kept standing. My son was so sad that he couldn’t see any of the game. So, your view is more important than anyone elses? I would of complained if we couldn’t enjoy my home team play. And how do you know that just by leaning on the rail that you were not obstructing anyones view? That’s just what you may of thought. It is called being respectful to those around you. Were you drinking? Because that can causes inacurrate perceptions of what is going on.
by footballgirl1 on Nov 3, 2009 12:49 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Jimmyray has already mentioned several times that he was not drinking until after he was escorted out, and went to a bar. More importantly, from a moral standpoint, isn’t it fair for us to have a conversation about why the security guards were even employed, based on the assumption that someone DID have a problem. Whether or not someone did, we will probably not know, but in your example, wouldn’t you sooner just go talk to the people standing? Maybe, bring your kid so he can see how society SHOULD work? I doubt anyone would say to a kid that they weren’t going to sit down, and if they would, they deserve whatever happens. That said, I don’t see why matters like this even go to the security teams. People just seem so irritable nowadays………My two cent-soap box moment……

Re
I don’t know what to make of the situation personally. Had not for the flu, I would have driven the 5-6 hours form Jersey to this game myself. I have attended Bronco games against the Jets, Giants, Jaguars, Dolphins and Bucs. I follow not only my team but understand the “flow” of a game. I have been told maybe twice in my travels to sit down and I did.
I’m not saying what you did is right or wrong. I’m not into the whole “I’m going to sue” aspect either but to each, one’s own right? I’ll be heading to the Redskins game if I get well but I have always tried to not only represent my team well, as my team represents my loyalty by playing hard, but represent who I am as a person.
Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself and getting deeper than just a fan getting kicked but its a ‘cultural’ difference when traveling from one place to another to watch football. I’ve learned long ago that though everyone loves football, the demographics aspect of certain “grey” areas change. Sitting vs standing would be the example here.
I do sympathize because had I made this trip while sick and asked to leave, I would have been beyond angry. Not that I would use my military accomplishments or my track record as a youth coach as leverage, I’m not just some drunk (only drink Guinness-refuse Bud/Miller), or hooligan looking to cause trouble for any city I’d visit in support of my Broncos.
Write what you have to write to whom you have to write. Contact a news agency if you must. Create an open forum reaching out to other ‘victims’ but bear in mind that no escort is ever the same and as a paying customer, well we know how grey that is too.
