Horse Tracks 11/10/09 - Steelers thump Broncos, who lead Chargers by 1 game in AFC West

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning, MHR Friends. Seems like deja vu all over again, huh? Keep your heads up! The Broncos are 6-2 and alone in first place this morning. Yes, it's only by a game, but you're reading it here first that they'll be up by 3 games again in two weeks' time. There is no shame in losing to the Ravens and Steelers in consecutive weeks; these two teams were the AFC finalists last year, and both get after the QB like most other teams cannot. Take a deep breath, look at the Broncos' schedule and then at that of the Dolts. Feeling better? Okay, now about last night - while there were some rough moments for them, the Broncos' D once again showed they can hang with anyone. The offense (especially the running game) and punting left a lot to be desired; but I think we'll see a dominant performance Sunday against a banged-up Redskins squad. It is NOT time to panic, Friends!

"If you told us at the beginning of the season we'd be 6-2 at the halfway point, I think most of us would have been happy with it," Andre Goodman said. "The way the last two weeks have gone, losing to the same division, the same type of team -- playoff teams -- having a poor second half on the defensive side of the ball, it's a little disheartening, but we're not going to panic. We're just going to go back to work and do what we're used to doing."

SI - Steelers hard to beat when firing on all cylinders - Ross Tucker
"The Broncos may have lost the game, but they went toe-to-toe with the defending Super Bowl champs for 53 minutes before caving in the final minutes. The Broncos will be a factor for the rest of this season and likely in the playoffs, as well."

Berger must be cut. The special teams were good last night on kickoff coverage, punt coverage and Prater had a nice game. Yet we lost the field position battle because of one player. Mitch Berger. McDaniels blew it by signing this washed up hack and Josh must cut ties with a guy that is not as good as a few dozen college punters, most CFL punters and probably a handful of professional rugby players. We got smoked by both Balt and Pitt so Berger didn’t lose either game, but it is only a short matter of time before Berger really kills the Broncos if he lingers on our roster much longer.

We signed Ty Law a day or so before the game and he is playing (looking really confused several times) on just about all passing downs? Did we trade a flipping 1st round pick for Alphonso Smith so he can ride pine? Has Smith been playing well, not really, but Law just signed off the street on Friday. I’m vexed by this development. Did anyone notice Smith playing last night? I knew Law would play some, but I was not prepared for that much PT.

Pitt did pretty much the same thing on D as Baltimore and we had no answers for either team. Our 2nd half adjustments were non-existent. Neither were are game to game adjustments for that matter. I miss the brilliant McDaniels of the first six games because the McDaniels of the last two games is the guy I was hating on after the Cutler fiasco. Josh got his coaching butt handed to him the past two games.

Good thing the Redskins stink. I’m not looking forward to any more games vs. teams with a good front 7 (NYG, Philly).

4-4 or 5-3 finish?

Look at the freaking schedule, bandwagon jumpers. I predicted 13-3 at the start of the season and that factored a Baltimore loss. Losing to Pittsburgh should alter that to 12-4 but one of my other losses was at San Diego so that cancels out. Indy looks beatable and Philly is garbage. Running the table is still plausible.

?

We have scored 10 offensive points in the last 8 quarters. That is garbage. Their D outscored our offense 7-3 last night.

Let’s beat a bad and beat-up Washington team next week before we start talking about how beatable Indy is or how awful Philly looks.

I didn't argue McGeorge's right to have an opinion

he didn’t offer anything but a rebuttal to a fan that wants to think and believe that this season is going to turn around.
I didn’t criticize McGeorge for pointing out the opposite opinion.
His view is there is nothing to to show right now that there is anything to base optimism on. Thats cool.

I find McGeorge’s opinions interesting.

Today I think most of us are trying to find some light at the end of the tunnel.
ELGee expressed that I was hoping we would give him some space to hope rather than blowing out his candle so quickly thats all.

I'm just pointing out

that nowhere is ELGee prevented from having his opinion. Basically that your comment does as much to silence McGeorge’s opinion as his does to ELGee’s (i.e. none).

I myself am currently divided. One part of me shares this opinion. One part of me sees the ’08 Broncos in front of me.

However, in the last 8 quarters, we played the Steelers Defense and the Ravens Defense.

I’d be worried if we only scored 10 offensive points against the browns defense and the raiders defense, but this doesn’t scare me so much.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

+1

I can’t believe people think we’re going to lose even three games down the stretch. Wake up people, the NFC East is garbage. They have been for awhile, they’re overrated year-in and year-out. Ok, Indy – L. NYG, Phil, Oak, KC x2, SD – 1 loss in those five.

Of course let’s say hypothetically we’re 8-5. We play the lowly Bills this week and even if our closest division rival (5-8) wins out we still play them in the last game so we’ll beat them then. But we’re gonna beat the Bills this week :p.

yeah

this is why I’m divided on this year’s team. I look at our remaining schedule, at the team we appear to be, and I think even three losses would be terrible and unexpected.

Then I think about the Bills last year.

My season prediction is still on track...

I had to revise it up to 12-4 after the NE and SD games….I had us losing to PIT.

I believe the other two losses I predicted were to NYG and INDY….

A proud prognostication of 10-6 in 2009!!! (April 2009 prediction)

Revised to 12-4 due to reality!

I see what you are saying about the schedule and I fully expect to get 10-11 wins and possibly 12. However I need to see our offense get better. We really need to walk all over the Redskins next week….PERIOD.

No shame in losing to the teams in the AFC title game last year, it’s just the way we lost. A win of SD in two weeks would be huge.

Agreed

Take care of business against the Skins and win against the Chargers and the playoffs will be in the future.
Time to describe the offense as what it is currently, poor. You need to go back to 1992 to find a Denver offense that was ranked as bad as this one. I remember the offseason offhanded shots at last year by the current coaching staff. Along the lines of, ‘the team moved up and down the field at will but struggled in the red zone’. Well right now the offense moves nowhere so who knows what they are capable in the red zone.

5 and 3; How much fun is this?

A serious look at both Broncos and Dolt’s schedule has both teams finishing 5 and 3. Broncos lose to NYG (short week after SD), @Colts & @Eagles, Chargers beat Philly (who can not win on the West Coast) lose @ Dallas, Cinn, @ Tenn. Which enables Broncos to win the Division by one game. The big “However” is that the Broncos beat SD at Home in two weeks. If the Broncos lose to SD, then it is Tie-Breaker time.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

Personally, I see the Broncos beating the Giants. Their secondary is a shambles, plus they will be flying out to the altitude of Denver on a short week after hosting the Falcons. To me, the Broncos have a big advantage there…

Here's how I made myself feel better

I divided last night’s game into two halfs for purposes of evaluation.

The Broncos dominated the first half, but trailed, thanks in large part to a nose tackle bumping Moreno into the ref, leading to a pick six for Pitt.

The Steelers dominated the second half. They trapped us in a nickel defense and were able to run a counter that the Broncos had no answer for. Defensively, they stopped worrying about the run and made the Broncos one dimensional. Even so, the game was only lost after the punting game cost us field position and Orton threw a legit pick from down around his own 9.

The game was much closer than it appeared. The Broncos need to figure out a fix for teams that go no huddle. Offensively, they need to do something to fix the run game and — against big fronts, protect Hamilton.

And finally, they need to figure out ways to get the ball into the endzone.

by JeffG on Nov 10, 2009 11:07 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Might want to start

By figuring out how to get the ball in the red zone. Baby steps for this offense.
Got to disagree that the game was not lost until the punting game lost it. The game was over before it began. If the offense cannot score any points and compounds that impotence with giving the other team points, the rest of the game is irrelevant. Offense was -4 on the night. Closer than it seemed is saying that Denver had a chance to win. Again, if your offense cannot score anything, you cannot win.
The Broncos need to figure out how to score and do something productive on offense. McD specialty is offense, time to show that big brain off. Saying the Broncos are 1 dimensional currently is generous. That implies that they are a strong passing team. They are not. They are decent at short passes but struggle with everything else in the passing game. The Ravens made the offense 1/2 dimensional and the Steelers did the same.

by AKfan on Nov 10, 2009 12:09 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Total denial is much better.
There is nothing wrong with fans of the team talking about what is going wrong with the team when they lose. No reason to take things so personally. The fact is, through 8 games, this is the least productive offense Denver has fielded since Reeves coached the team and Gaston Green was the rb. If the production does not change 6 and 2 will not be the result in the 2nd half. You think things are great and no changes need to be made. Fine, I respect your opinion. I think 10 points in 2 games from the offense means things are not fine. I tend to believe that if your offense cannot score points wins will be allusive. No reason to take that as a direct shot at you, it is not.

by AKfan on Nov 10, 2009 1:04 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Remember the last time we played the steelers?

05 playoffs??? They had a really good defense then, too. We didn’t win it.

It happens against tough defenses. Sometimes, you just can’t do anything against a team that matches up well against you. The saints had a game where they only put up 10 points against the dolphins. You didn’t see their fans jumping ship because the offense was terrible. The steelers and ravens are just a bad matchup for us. Plain and simple. Moving on.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

I guess

22 points a game would rank 18th in the league right now (below average). 22 points a game would work well with the results the defense is throwing out there though. Unfortunately the team is putting up 18.8 per game for the first half and that includes 2 special team scores and 1 defensive score. Take those out and the offense is producing 16 points a game this year, slightly less than the Lions and slightly more than the Chiefs.
Got to pump that up a little but if Denver can start scoring 22 a game from here on out the AFC West will won by the good guys.

by AKfan on Nov 10, 2009 3:30 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Did you take the Lions and Chiefs ST & Def scores out in your little comparison?

It’s not an accurate comparison if you don’t count those scores for Den and then rank them against everybody else whose Def & ST scores are still included. Whatever it takes to help your point, I guess.

I'm going on the assumption that the offense, with the ball, has a chance to score.

Which I think is a sound hypothetical.

Of course, for those of the “the game was over before it began” belief, I’d say that what you are watching, if that’s the case, isn’t a game to begin with.

Teams alwasys find your weaknesses eventually

It happens every year. give the rest of the NFL half a season of game taope and they’ll find your weaknesses – interior of the o-line, nickle-corner, linebackers, intermediate to deep passing game, etc.

Now that those have been exposed, teams will exploit them until the Broncos can make adjustments. If they can’t make the adjustments . . .

Thanks for the Measured Words, Doug

The last two games have been tough. Our boys can play against anyone, but they have a glaringly small margin of error against good teams.

The last five games have been crazy. Five Sundays, five good teams. it’s hard to appreciate just how tough this spell has been. Let’s bring on the creampuffs!

Ty Law

am I missing something here? I thought Ty Law played pretty damn well for being on the team for 2.5 days! Did he give up a pass all night? Why are people complaining about him? I was a little skeptical when they first signed him, but after seeing the game, sure glad we did! It’s only been 2.5 days!!! Champ had a horrible day….

I thought he played well too

The only person I’ve heard complaining about him is McGeorge, and quite frankly, he complains about everything.

Not sure what you are talking about...

we have the harder schedule. San Diego’s toughest opponents are the Bengals and Philly. They face Philadelphia at home and Philly lost to Oakland on the west coast. We face the Eagle in their stadium (which probably won’t have 20,000 Broncos fans cheering them on). We have the Colts…they have the Titans. And unless we get something going soon, I don’t think we’ll beat them again.

Reading all the above posts

I’m surprised that so many are talking down the future opposition. Did you see our offense last night? The defense in the second half? I think other teams will find the recipe for success against us unless we learn to punish aggressive defenses. After the last two weeks I don’t see how anyone can say we can run the table on these teams.

I don’t see us running the table, but I think we’ll be more than fine. Yes, everyone knows the O-Line is weak up the middle, specifically Hamilton. But there’s a difference between spotting that weakness and being able to exploit it. The Ravens and Steelers are perennially superior pass-rushing teams. The only teams remaining on the schedule who fit that description (IMO) are the Giants and Eagles, and the G-Men haven’t been doing all that great in that department this year.

It wasn’t simple aggression that cost us the past two games. It was a matter of being out-manned up the middle by superior talents.

Sorry about my last comment. I've had a rough morning and was a little frustrated.

Anyways……. why do you feel that the chargers will win the west? The broncos have already beaten them once in SD. The broncos still have two games against the chiefs and one against the raiders and one against the redskins. That’s 10 wins, 9 if we have a meltdown in one of them. You’re saying that we are going to lose 5 out of our last 8 games??? Where do you see those losses coming from and why?

The chargers are back one game and they still have to come to denver, once more. So, explain yourself. I’m curious.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
