"The Real Man (Fan)...
...smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection."
Thomas Paine 1737-1809
You may like this post or maybe not, but it comes from the heart of a fan after a couple of tough losses.
Being a fan of a sports team is a funny thing. When it comes to the team's performance, a fan is very limited as to what he/she can contribute directly. Sure, a fan can show up at the stadium and make noise, which is a huge part of the game; however, when it comes to actually making something happen on the field, there is nothing a fan can do but watch and react. This fact is both a beauty of fandom and a bitter bite of fan reality.
What makes a fan? Is it about community and being a part of something? Is it a simple distraction from the riggors of daily life? It just depends, doesn't it? There are spectators and then there are fans.
For fans it is very hard when you confuse fandom and spectatorship. For fans, feelings run deep and you become emotionally vested in everything that happens with the team. You develop expecations based on what is percieved by yourself and the community of fans. When those expectations are not met, it becomes a very disappointing thing.
Spectators crawl out of the woodwork when adversity strikes, and as fans we have to remember that spectators have their place in the whole picture too. Spectators often say things that sound utterly retarded to fans. Because fans invest much of their free-time in discussing the team with other members of the fan community, the comments of a spectator often sound foreign and overly critical.
If you spend any time on MHR you begin to recognize the same names who have been here through thick and thin. Obviously the MHR staff is always around, but there are many others who are here daily through the best and worst of times. Every one of them is entitled to their view through whatever color glasses they choose to wear.
I've been a lurker around MHR for over a year, though I only recently signed up and began posting here. Let's just say I'm a little nervous, and I didn't want to sound like a dummy- even though I'm sure I do at times. I feel like we are on a journey since our beloved owner, Mr. Bowlen, shook things up about 10-11 months ago. I guess for the first time in many years, we are observing a team that is going somewhere specific, and it feels real good. I haven't felt that way since the begining of the Shanahan era through the end of the Elway era.
I feel a little territorial about MHR, whether I've earned that right or not I don't know. Am I alone in feeling that way? When I start to see some of the spectators come out and begin posting after a tough game; honestly, it is something I have to remember to take with a grain of salt. Many of the boo birds who are coming out haven't said a word in weeks, even after the most exciting of victories. What brings them out after a couple of losses against very good teams? I don't know, but maybe they just feel justified in their MSM preconceptions of the team.
As a fan, I'm interested in constructive criticism and praise of the team. Obviously the team is not perfect, and there are some growing pains they may be going through now, but that doesn't change a fan's love of the team. Recognize that adversity is part of the team getting to where they are wanting to go, so for that reason we must smile in trouble.
As fans, we need to gather our strength from distress, and realize that we can't get where we want to go without experiencing it first. A champion is not built without experiencing setbacks, they are a requirement and necessary aspect of the learning curve. Our distress may not be over, but recognize it for what it is.
We must grow brave by reflection. Look at what this team has accomplished through eight games of a written-off rebuilding season. Why can't they overcome two losses? They've already done better than that against tough teams. The team will come out of this stronger than ever. Can the fans do it too?
This is a Fan-Created Comment on MileHighReport.com. The opinion here is not necessarily shared by the editorial staff of MHR

Well thought out and I’ve found myself questioning my fellow “fans” as well. To each one’s own I suppose.

Good post...
I also think, when you love something so dearly, when it disappoints you, you feel real pain.
Being raised as a Bronco fan in Colorado and going through all the good years you look at the Broncos like an extended family. Personally, when Denver loses like they lost yesterday, I have a rough week. I want to be constructive but my nature is to lash out at times.
I love that you see all sides of the Fans here, some logical, some biased, some CRAZY, but you have to embrace that it takes all kinds to make the world go round.

That is an amazing post, walter. Rec'd
I wasn’t in the gameday thread for the baltimore game, but I was there last night. I was amazed at how quick people were to turn on Orton and this offense. It’s like the sky started falling at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Some of them were emotional fans and some of them were opportunistic spectators. So, I see where you’re coming from.
It’s difficult to just lump together the best qualities of a fan and say “you have to meet criteria x and y and then you are a fan”. It’s difficult to describe a fan because people are different and they express their “fandom” differently.
What makes MHR so special is that the constant contributors are fans, expressing their thoughts differently, but, for the most part, are respectful and thorough in everything they post. Many people that have just joined or joined only to criticize don’t know the ins and outs of MHR and aren’t used to the type of conversation that occurs here.
I know that I haven’t been here from the beginning. I just came here during the Cutler saga back in the day as “broncointheville”. There are some of you that were here from the very beginning and have seen MHR grow up and expand to where it is today. Personally, I’m glad that I found and I hope it stays the way it is.
With that said, there will be people that join that will change the culture of MHR. Good or bad, I don’t know. IMO, I think that apart from major losses, the true fans will be here, like you said, Walter. How we control the spectators that you described, I don’t know. They have rights to contribute here, as much as we do, but at the same time, it’s a bit counterproductive to calm everything down in the the gameday threads or in the fanposts when real insight and analysis could be taking place.
So, I’m not sure, Walter. That is a great post, though. I do know that the fans will stay on MHR and continue to contribute no matter what. If we win or lose, MHR won’t just die. The spectators may come and go as they please, as long as they aren’t being offensive.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Really nice comment.
It is hard to completely define fan. Most of us like to learn from those with more knowledge and insight on MHR. I ignore those here just to snipe and be snarky.

by the author. We Broncos fans are a classy lot, just ask those guys at the Steel Curtain. Let’s win with class for that’s what Broncos do. The Redskins will be demoralized, but (hopefully) after we go to 7-2, we’ll have nothing but positive comments for our brethren at Hog Haven. GO BRONCOS!!!

It took me months to recognize what this community is.
I used to go to internet forums to simply argue with people. I come here to learn and have actual conversations. This has replaced the pub in today’s society— if you can have relevant and intelligent debates, you’ll sharpen your mind not only about football, but logic and problem solving. Once I recognized the jewel that we have, I changed my writing style (although I’ll still revert to my standard internet drivel during the game threads) and rediscovered my passion for discourse, writing, and thought.
Just ignore the people that come during the down times, they distract you from the real conversations. If the person really wants to add value, they’ll recognize they’re being ignored and change their methods.
That’s what happened to me.
