Ben Hamilton
I don`t want to hate on the guy because in the past he has been a great Bronco but last night was pretty embrassing for him.
The Sack that Orton took at the tail end of the of the 2nd Quarter was all Hamilton`s fault. Sure the pressure came from his side and Orton may have held on to the ball a little long but Orton made a pretty smart move by stepping up and Scooting (Can`t give Orton`s mobility to much credit) over to the left. Everthing looked to be clear and he might have actually got the ball off if Hamilton has not given up complete on the play. I hope that someone who reads this attaches the game tape because that might better show it but pretty much Hamilton lost his block on his man and started walking on the feild. WALKING!!! The play was still alive he was still close enough to keep on blocking Keisel. The result of the play is Orton is sacked while trying to fight for the line of scrimage while Hamilton is still walking 6 or 7 yards from the tackle. Having someone get off there block is understandable (sometimes) but showing no lack of effort and no hustle until the whistle is a one way ticket out of the NFL or to the Oakland Raiders with all our other washed up O-linemen.
I don`t want to be Hamilton this week during team meeting because he is about to get his ass chewed out. Not only should the coached be pissed for his total incompetence but Wiegman, Clady, Kuper, Harris & Orton should all be giving him some stink eye. You walk off the feild at the end of the game man you don`t walk around when you QB is being sack in front of your eyes.
I`ll leave it up to McDaniels, Xanders, McCoy and Dennison to figure out the solution but the have to fix it.

I must admit..
I’ve always cheered hard for the team, but rarely watched the action away from the ball. I have to admit it’s hard to miss how many times he’s been blown up in the last few games. I hate to be down on a Bronco player, but Hamilton and Berger are both in my doghouse atm.

I was worried
when I saw us move to more of a gap control O line. Hamilton is a finesse guy who doesnt really have the lower body strength to play gap control! His upper body strength as well leaves a lot to be desired in gap control but he is well built for the ZB scheme. I have had conversations where both myself and the other person think that Ben will not even be offered a contract in Denver this year. I t would be sad to see him go but if that is the call teh coaches are going to make collectively then thanks Ben for the 8 years!

pass protection
is pass protection, and has nothing to do with the particular run-blocking scheme unless it’s a pa

except that in pass protection
you rely heavily on the same skills you would gap run blocking. lots of lower body strength to anchor your position

Jon, I have the same concerns but will wish him well if he is elsewhere next year.
I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

didn't notice that
but I did notice that a couple plays before the last int (I think, it was where they wanted Orton flagged for grounding late in the game) that Hamilton blocked no one. He stood there. I kid you not.

he should be benched
lets see what we got in olsen. couldn’t possibly be worse than hamilton. but then again, berger couldn’t possibly have been worse than kern right? oh wait, he is.
LG is a HUUUUGE priority in the next draft. or perhaps even free agency. it’s such a massive weak link in our o-line that it takes the whole line from great, to good.

agreed
hamilton’s been done for a while, now. a stud LG to go with clady on the left side would be tremendous. wiegmann’s replacement, if not already on the roster, needs to be seriously considered, too. zone-blocking or not, ben has been getting knocked around for a while now in pass protection/short-yardage. love the guy, but he just can’t hold the fort anymore. we have to get bigger/stronger on the interior to play with the big boys, and gain a yard for a first down. mcd will address this in the offseason, i’m sure.

I know the exact play you are reffering to
On that play you will notice Ben give up after he is beat. The steeler starts to take Orton down and you see Weigmann(sp) run over and try to get the guy off Orton before he goes down while Ben stands there and watches.
I appreciate Hamilton’s service, but it seemed to me a large portion of why we couldn’t get much going on offense in the first half rests on Ben’s shoulders. Almost every blown play was due to a Hamilton error.
Like I said in the Game Thread “With the 14th overall pick (thank you Chicago), the Denver Broncos select….A LG!!!!!”
