Midterm Grades are in, what's your grade?

Well, it is the halfway point in the season, time for some mid-term grades.  This is strictly my opinion and obviously I am no teacher, so they carry no weight with any teaching board, but are posted for debate:

Star-divide

Coaching A- I will admit that I had some very serious concerns with McDaniels coming into the season, I still may not agree with a lot of the off-field choices, but I think he has grown through the off season and definitely has changed the attitude at dove valley.  Mike Nolan and the defensive staff have been a god-send and have helped transform an awful defense to a very good one with potential to be great very soon.  I give them an A- because we have not improved in special teams and we have seen a struggle in the lack of production in the running game, I think mainly due to a change to a trap blocking scheme versus a zone blocking scheme.

Quarterback B+ I am not the fan of Orton as a long term solution to the position, but he has adapted well and I think has generally played up to his abilities.  He has been efficient and takes what the defense gives him.  He still has issues with staring down WR and leading DB to them, but he generally has been good about ball protection and not forcing too many throws.

Running Back C+ This grade may be a little harsh, but with the investment in RB in the offseason, I think we should be getting better production.  While I think Buckhalter has played very well, I don’t think he is built to be a feature back.  Moreno I would grade as a C- to a D+, I understand he is a rookie, yet we have had plenty of rookie RBs with much better production,  he needs to start stepping up and doing all the little things better (ball security, blocking, not dancing in the hole).  You could argue that the RB grade is dependent on the o line, but I think they go hand in hand.  Look at a guy like Steven Jackson,  I doubt any of us could name anyone on St. Louis O-line, but guys like that make your O-line better.

Tight Ends A This really is an unsung strength of this team.  Schefler has remained healthy and been very productive when the plays are designed for him.  Graham continues to be the best combo TE in the league.  I was at the New England game, and Graham was opened all day and dominated on the blocking.  Hopefully we get some more focus of the passing game to these guys as the season wears on, I think that both could have over 500 yards if they were thrown to more.

Wide Receivers B+ This may be somewhat harsh, since the WR production is limited to our QB play.  But I think Eddie Royal has struggled with gaining separation along with Stokely.  A lot of this offense is based on YAC production, which has been good but not outstanding.  Gaffney has been a pleasant surprise, hopefully the production goes up as the season wears on and timing becomes better.

Offensive Line C The lines play has been generally average.  We may have thought this line was a lot better based on Cutler having some better scrambling ability and getting rid of the ball earlier and not taking too many sacks.  That being said, this line does have talent and should be getting better production, it seems that the interior of the line has struggled the most, especially against physical fronts.  This may be due to a change in the blocking scheme or it may be due to Hamilton and Wiegman being undersized.  What would be nice to see is some nastiness in the line, as Alfred Williams said today, we need to start putting people on their butts, we have not been doing that.

Defensive Line B Although not spectacular they have done their job for the most part and are demanding double teams and clogging lanes.  While we have not seen a dominate D-lineman, they have been able to hold the point of attack for the most part and have helped free up the LB’s.  They have played up to or beyond their talent level in addition to learning a new system, this probably is my biggest surprise.

Linebackers B+ Earlier I would of given this unit an A, but the last couple of weeks have shown some chinks in the armor.  The pass rush from these guys has been exceptional, either from the edge or up the middle, all of the LB’s have shown they can rush the QB.  The coverage has generally been pretty good and we have not seen too many screens or passes to the RB/TE that have really gashed us.  Tackling has been pretty good and we had not missed too many tackles, as opposed to last year.  That being said, I have noticed that the edge are not holding the force on outside plays and the inside backers of late have been taking some poor angles.

Defensive Backs A- Brian Dawkins has been a godsend in reestablishing some attitude from the safety position and for the defense.  In general the coverage has been good to outstanding.  Goodman has played very well and Bailey has generally played up to his standards.  That being said, the last few games there has been some issues, although I think some of that is more about the pass rush not getting to the QB or the QB making an excellent play.  I would like to see some more int from Bailey, especially with more QB challenging his side of the field.

Special Teams D Aside from Eddie Royal’s two TD returns against a horrible coverage unit in SD, the special teams have been nothing special.  The kick offs have been mediocre, FG have been OK but nothing to inspire confidence, punting has been poor to atrocious, returns have been poor to bad with stupid mistakes almost costing us several games.  With the emphasis that had been placed on special teams, these units should be much better than they are.  Hopefully with some time to gel the production will go up.

Overall B+ This grade may be somewhat harsh since the general feeling going into the season is that 6-2 would be above anyone’s expectations.  But I live in the land where you don't expect or accept failure from the team, I expect that we are going to be a winning team, and if we are not, then that is a dissappointment.  I do not live with the idea that we should be happy that a team performs below average but above the stated expectations, then that is a succes.  We are the Broncos 8-8, 7-9 are not a good season, ever, no excuses.  But there are obvious areas where this team can improve.  That being said, I think the there are five games on the remaining schedule that we should win, a game against NY that we should be able to win, and that would put us at 12-4, and 13-3 is still a  real possibility.

Boy was I relieved

to find out you wanted us to grade the Broncos’ efforts.

I was afraid you were grading the MHR posters. :D

rec'd btw for a thoughtful look at the team

I’ll offer up my perspective after I get done with my contribution to this week’s Upon Further Review.

Though I suspect, I’ll be in almost total agreement with you.

I was worried, too. I didn't study that day and my roommates were loud that night and I just know I didn't do well.........

What happened to teacher/student confidentiality???

Good analysis, Broncoman. Very accurately graded. There should be no notes from the parents asking for grade justification.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Gave it a B/B+...

If we had rebounded from the BAL loss, I reckon an A, but history is history.

B

A for this defense. we’ve been one of the better defenses in the league to date this season. wow. what? nolan and the fa’s have exceeded expectations. i am pumped for the future of this d, as well as the present. outstanding secondary.

C for the offense. playing their part to contribute to wins so far, but we gotta somehow put more points on the board. running game is a big concern, as is LG and RT. orton has been getting the w’s, mostly, and that is all i care about.

C for this unit. slipping a little lately, but still definitely improved from last season. the recent coverage and earlier return units drag this down a bit, and berger/prater still worry me a little. ok, more than a little. we need this unit to be solid to win.

B for the coaching unit. it is an amazing feat to turn over an organization like we did, and have immediate successful results. i like what i am hearing from every coach on defense. mcd’s acquisitions, starting with nolan and dawkins, have been mostly superb. ST’s drag this score down a notch, as well as our scoring. mcd and co. have been very impressive in pretty much every category.

Overall, the decision to beef up and get tougher this season has been instrumental in our ability to plow through this schedule and come out 6-2. we have some issues, and aren’t a completed product just yet, but the groundwork has already been laid for the immediate future. excellent health and a bit of good fortune have also aided the cause. i like where this team is at, and where they’re headed. beat san diego.

You have a good point about injuries

Maybe that is something I missed, but this team appears to be more fit than in years past, I don’t know if that is due to more full contact practices in training camp or luck, but I think that we definately have had a lot more injuries that I think were due to guys not being conditioned (hamstrings and groins), but I always have a hard time judging how much is conditioning and how much is just luck (bad or good).

Dave, I'm inclined to run with your grades

I think there have been issues in all facets of the game — coaching, offense, defense, and special teams. What will be interesting to watch is how those issues are addressed and/or resolved in the 2nd half of the season.

Grade a few things differently

Coaching – Nolan and Nunnley A+
Dennison – c+ – this one not his fault, but is his responsiblity. Think he is taking the wrong class. Signed up for Zone Blocking 510 and got power blocking 010.
Special Teams – D and slipping fast to an F
McDaniels – fast out the gate, but did not turn in the last two assignments. Sitting at a very low B right now. If he starts doing his homework and adjusting to what he has and the challenges he faces he can pull it back up to an A. I see it in him, but his current slump means he has to make some mid season adjustments – this means that his mental chart needs some minor revision. This is often a very hard thing for very bright people to accept.

I somewhat agree here

I wouldn’t say low B for McD I’d say High B because he’s been an A all season……except only the Steelers game. (Ravens I don’t count much against him, but I didn’t see the glaring coaching errors I saw Monday)

We really needed to be more aggressive on a couple key plays that would have kept us in it even WITH the INTs. But we went for it 4th and 5 early, and punted 4th and 1 late. 11 points down you GO FOR IT on 4th and 1 in the last quarter of the game. And I don’t care who disagrees with me. even 4th and 2 I MIGHT consider him punting acceptable….though a bad choice…..but 4th and 1 where they typically did not make us lose yards all night……..COME ON!!!!!!!!!!

Two games is not a trend

And given the fact that in preseason I called both of the last 2 games as loss on the way to a 12-4 record, I am not overly concerned with the current direction. However – based on the last 2 games either McD has shown something that DCs can now key into, or we do not have what it takes to stand up to a very physical team. We did well against SD and DAL so I know we can handle physical play in general – but something has changed and needs to be addressed before a real trend does set in.

I agree and my

comments on McD were fixated on one game

The team, a C+ or B-

Just because one part of the team deserves an A (defense) and the other part is doing D+ work (offense) doesn’t mean we are A-OK, there are a lot of holes on both sides of the ball that need fixed.

I pretty much agree with Broncoman's assessments. BTW, Mike Nolan should be our MVP.5

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

Group assignments are miserable

The overall grade is dependent on those you’re assigned to work with. So it goes for the Bronco Defense thus far:

Defense: A+. This includes extra credit for the last two games, standing firm for as long as they did with almost no support. With something around a 104%, they can absorb a bad game along the line and keep this grade. Only true area of improvement: turnovers.

Offense: C. Agreed with the above assessment that for six weeks they did just enough to contribute to a win without being the primary reason. But the last two losses are square on the offense and no one unit is exempt.

Special teams: D-. Royal’s 2 returns save this from an F, but just barely.

Coaching: B. This is again a tandem grade. Nolan: A+. This guy is a warlock. Some are cut out to be head coaches, some to be DEFENSIVE GENIUSES. McDaniels: B-. The lack of offensive adjustments the last two weeks has to be corrected. Where is the “amoeba” aspect that adjusts to take advantages of weaknesses? The power running game must go.

Standard GPA applied and the total team grade: C+. Good enough to win some games, not good enough to be dominant.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and then used against you.
