Offensive Plays and the One's That "Peeved" Me!

Monday night's game against the Pittsburg Steelers was an exciting 3 qtr contest for both defenses. Heading into the 4th qtr down 14-10 you would feel comfortable knowing how our team has come from behind and pulled out the wins this year. But, this would not be the case, Pittsburg made the right adjustments on both defense and offense that we weren't able to do. The final outcome was 28-10 Steelers and this leave a nasty taste in my mouth.

Star-divide

First Quarter:

1) Eddie Royal returns the kick off from the 1 yd line to the 22 yd line. To start the game.

2) 13 yd completion to Royal, 1st down. Ball on Denvers 35 yd line.

3) Correll Buckhalter 2 yd carry to Denvers 37 yd line. 2n & 8.

4) 13 yd completion to Royal, 1st down. Ball at mid field.

5) Buckhalter 5 yd carry to the Pittsburg 45. 2nd down.

6) 20 yd completion to Royal, 1st down at Pittsburg 25 yd line.

7) Buckhalter 3 yd loss on the carry, ball on Pittsburg 28 yd line. 2nd down.

8) 6 yd completion to Marshall to Pittsburg 22 yd line. 3rd down and 7.

9) Incomplete pass to Royal at pittsburgs 8 yd line. 4th and 7.

10) 40 yd field goal by Matt Prater. Good. 3-0 Denver. Overall it was a pretty good drive 56 yds on 10 plays and a field goal. 4 yds running, 52 yds passing.

Drive # 2: after a 3 and out for Pittsburg ending with a sack on Roethlisberger.

1) Eddie Royal on the punt return. If your not going to make a play on the ball Eddie, get the hell out of the way. I believe it would of been a live ball if the gunner pushes him into it and it could have been a grave mistake. Ball rolls the Denver 18 yd line where Denver takes over 1st and 10.

2) 15 yd pass completion to Marshall over the middle, 1st down at Denvers 33 yd line.

3) 4 yd completion to Marshall over the middle to Denvers 37 yd line. 2 down and 6.

4) Moreno 2 yd loss on the carry, no face mask called on Farrior! Ball on Denvers 35. 3 down and 8.

5) 7 yd completion to Marshall over the left middle to the Denver 42 yd line. 1st down.

6) 3 yd completion to Gaffney over the left side. Ball on Denvers 47 yd line. 2nd down and 7.

7) Incompletion to Royal over the left side down by the Pittsburg 39 yd line. Pass was thrown behind Royal on his right side. 3 down and 7.

8) 5 yd completion to Marshall over the right side middleto the Pittsburg 48, 2 yds short of the 1st down. Forced to punt.

9) Berger punt, touch back. Pittsburgs ball on the 20 yd line. The thing that started to bother me was not running the ball to the outsides on first and second down. We had time of position in this quarter and really thought we could start opening things up with the run. At least start to wear them down some. It didn't happen though, we had one run for a loss of 2 yds.

Ather another 3 and out on Roethlisberger with :07 seconds to go in the 1st qtr Pittsburg is forced to punt from their own 40 yd line. Royal receives the ball at the Denver 17 and runs it out to the Denver 23 yd line to end the first quarter.

Second Quarter:

Drive #3 starts on the Denver 23.

1) Buckhalter 7 yd carry to the Denver 30 yd line. 2nd down and 3.

2) Buckhalter 0 yd carry to the Denver 30 yd line. 3rd down and 3. Up the middle!

3) 12 yd completion to Royal over the right side middle to the Denver 42 yd line. 1st down.

4) Interception to Tyrone Carter at the Denver 48 and run back for Touch Down!!! Kyle, Kyle. One too many times to the well. Moreno gets tangled up with the official (another rookie dumb mistake) and the ball sails by him on the left for an easy catch and run by Carter.

Pittsburg 7 Denver 3

Drive #4 starts with Kenny McKinley taking the kickoff from the Denver 3 and bringing it out to the Denver 21 yd line.

1) Moreno 4 yd carry over the left middle to the Denver 25 yd line. 2nd down and 6.

2) Orton sacked 4 yd loss to the Denver 21. 3 down and 10.

3) 15 yd completion to Marshall to the Denver 36. 1st and 10 Denver.

4) Moreno -1 yd carry to the Denver 35. 2nd down 11.

5) 3 yd completion to Gaffney over the right side middle to the Denver 38. 3rd down and 8.

6) 18 yd completion to Graham over the middle to the Pittsburg 44 yd line. 1st and 10.

7) False start #71 Russ Hochstein. 1st and 15 on the Pittsburg 49 yd line.

8) Incomplete pass to marshall over the left side middle. 2nd down and 15.

9) 10 yd completion to Marshall over the left side middle to the Pittsburg 39 yd line. 3rd and 5.

10) Incomplete pass to Gaffney over on the left side line. Catch challenged and rule stood up. Gaffney! hang onto the ball because that would have been a first down! You killed the drive! Come on! Oh, I'm sorry. 4th down and 5 on the Pittsburg 39 yd line and a gutsy call to go for it.

11) 8 yd completion to Stokely to the Pittsburg 31 yd line is brought back for a holding call. Ben Hamilton! Do Your Job!!!. ball on the Pittsburg 49 yd line.

12) Berger punt from the Pittsburg 49 to the Pittsburg 23. No run back on a 26 yd punt!!! Berger you limp footed old rascal, come on!!!

Drive #5 begins after Royal fair catches a punt on the Denver 16 yd line with 2:47 left in the half.

1) Buckhalter 6 yd carry over the right middle to the Denver 22 yd line. 2nd down and 4.

2) Moreno 3 yd carry over the left middle to the Denver 25 yd line. 3rd down and 1.

3) 18 yd completion to Marshall over the middle to the Denver 43 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver.

4) Orton sacked at the Denver 41 yd line for a loss of 2 yds. 2nd down and 12 at the 41 yd line.

5) -1 yd completion to Buckhalter over the left side. 3rd down and 13 at the Denver 40 yd line.

6) Buckhalter 5 yd carry over the right hash marks. 4th down and 8 at the Denver 45 yd line.

7) Berger punt to the Pittsburg 16 yd line, fair catch called. 2 penalties on the play (running into the kicker and holding the receiving team) Holding call up held. Half the distance to the goal at the Pittsburg 8 yd line. Knee taken to end the half. What can we tell from our offense in the first half. The Denver Broncos held onto the ball for almost 2/3 of the half  at 19:16 with 5/9 3rd down conversions and 1 turnover. You would think the Broncos would be in the drivers seat even though being down 7-3 at this time because we have shown a way to adjust at half time and win ball games. I know I was felling pretty good of our situation and figured we would prevail. But, these are the Pittsburg Steelers and  to tell you the truth I for the life of me can't figure out how their stamina held up.

Third Quarter:

To begin the 3rd qtr Pittsburg received the ball and began right away driving down the field. On 1st and 10 at the Denver 34 yd line Roethlisberger fumbles the ball and Ayers picks it up at the Pittsburg 46 and runs it back for a Touch Down. (54 yds) Denver 10 Pittsburg 7.

The Pittsburg Steelers 2nd drive would give them the lead after Ward catches a pass in the endzone from Roethlisber, Touch Down. Denver 10 Pittsburg 14. After a short kickoff to the Denver 29 Spencer Larsen brings the ball out to the Denver 40 yd line where Denver takes position for their first drive of the second half with 9:04 left in the 3rd qtr.

Drive # 6

1) 16 yd compleion to Royal over the middle to the Pittsburg 44 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver.

2) -1 yd carry for Moreno up the left middle. 2nd down and 11 at the Denver 45 yd line.

3) Incomplete shuttle pass to Graham. 3rd down and 11 at the Denver 45 yd line.

4) Incomplete to marshall over the left side. 4th down and 11 at the Denver 45 yd line.

5) Berger punt to the Denver 3 yd line. Pittsburgs ball. After driving down to the Denver 15 yd line Roethlisberger throws an interception to Goodman in the endzone. Goodman runs the ball out to the Denver 20 yd line. Holding penalty on Denver gives Denver the ball at the Denver 10 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver. 2:26 left in the 3rd qtr.

Drive # 7

1) 15 yd completion to Marshall over the left middle to the Denver 25 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver.

2) 3 yd completion to Scheffler over the right side to the Denver 28 yd line. 2nd down and 7.

3) Buckhalter 2 yd carry up the middle to the Denver 30 yd line. 3rd down and 5.

4) 4 yd completion to Stokely over the left side line to the Denver 39 yd line. 4th down and 1.

5) Berger punt from the Denver 39 to the Pittsburg 16. Pittsburg ball at the Pittsburg 30 yd line after a 14 yd return. The end of the 3rd qtr, Denver 10 Pittsburg 14.

Fourth Quarter:

After a 3 and out the Steelers punt from their 34 to Eddie Royal at the Denver 19. Royal returns the ball out the Denver 33 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver on the Denver 33 yd line.

Drive # 8

1) Incomplete pass to Marshall over the right side line. Caught out of bounds. 2nd down and 10.

2) Incomplete pass to Graham over the right side. 3rd down and 10.

3) 3 yd completion to marshall over the left side. 4th and 7 at the Denver 36 yd line.

4) Berger punt to the Pittsburg 41 yd line. 1st and 10 Pittsburg. 3 and out for Pittsburg, Royal fair catches at the Denver 10 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver.

Drive # 9

1) -1 yd carry Buckhalter to the Denver 9 yd line. 2nd down and 11.

2) Interception Palomalu at the Denver 25 yd line. 1st and 10 Pittsburg.  3 plays later Pittsburg Touch Down pass from Roethlisberger to Wallace. Denver 10 Pittsburg 21. Kick off to McKinley at the Denver 5 returned to the Denver 26 yd line. 1st and 10 Denver.

Drive # 10

1) incomplete pass Orton. 2nd down and 10 at the Denver 26 yd line.

2) Incomplete pass to Royal over the right middle. 3rd down and 10.

3) Incomplete pass Orton. 4th and 10.

4) Berger punt from the Denver 26 to Pittsburg 35 yd line. Returned to the Denver 33 yd line. Brought back on a push to the back penalty on Pittsburg. Ball spoted at Pittsburg 26 yd line. 1st and 10 Pittsburg. After a 74 yd drive Pittsburg Touch Down. Denver 10 Pittsburg 28. Kickoff to McKinley for a touch back. Denver ball 1st and 10 at the Denver 20 yd line.

Drive # 11

1) 12 yd completion to Marshall over the right side line. 1st and 10 at the Denver 32 yd line.

2) 4 yd completion to Buckhalter over the middle. 2nd down and 6 at the Denver 36 yd line. What the hell ref? Helmet to helmet hit on Bucky by Harrison.

3) Incomplete pass to Moreno over the left side. 3rd down and 6.

4) Interception at the Denver 43 by Carter, down at the Denver 40 yd line. Pittsburg takes a knee and a bow to end the game.

We moved the ball pretty well in the first half but couldn't score. Pittsburg made the big adjustments coming out for the second half that we didn't. Our defense played a very good game up until they couldn't get any help from th offense. Roethlisberger didn't have a very good game until the 4th qtr. With no running game we fail!!! I still like our chances against anybody and I believe we are still in the running for the playoffs. Let's have a great game this Sunday!

We got an inkling of him in the Ravens game.

Let’s hope he is OK and his carries start to escalate into something great for us.

Very good post, bfree

I agree with you on Hillis. I cannot fathom what he must have done to get so far into the doghouse. It would be great to see him carrying the ball. Some decent run blocking would certainly help. I hope that Hochstein’s extra 20# makes a difference.

Thanks and rec’d.

Thank hairy.

This helped me see the real issues this team has right now. It’s a hard pill to swallow when you get beat when you believe you should of won.

great post bfree

IMHO the turning point in the game came in the 3rd quarter, when after returning a Big Ben fumble for a touchdown, our defense let the Steelers go 80 yards in 4 plays for a go-ahead touchdown. Our guys never looked in synch on either side of the ball after that.

That waas kind of the dagger in the throat, but our offense could score.

I couldn’t believe how long we had the ball in the first half with only 3 points to show for it. Is McDaniels holding something back for the playoffs or is our offense struggling that bad? I don’t know, and it is puzzling to me.

I tend to believe, at this point, that it's a chemistry issue

We have everybody on offense trying to master a new offensive system with new terminology, plays, etc. etc. The unit has not yet had a great amount of time to fully gel. The timing on the passing routes is still not consistent. Orton hasn’t show that he fully trusts the O-line to protect him. Our TE’s have been rather conspicuously absent most of the time, the running game has not been strong nor consistent, Orton has made a number of bone-headed plays.

Once at least some of these get worked out, we’ll begin to see better results.

Hillis

I don’t think he is in the dog house. I think he is recovering from a concussion.

You could be right Endzone and I have thought about that.

Looking at Big Ben Hamilton and his issues, it may well be the case with both of them. Because I remember McDaniels saying that Hillis was a very valuable asset to the team and that hasn’t been the case thus far. Thanks guys for the comments.

I must have missed the concussion issue, thanks.

If he gets the Chance

I believe that Peyton Hillis could have a great game against the Redskins.

Did I not read somewhere here on MHR

that Hillis is the only bona fide fullback that we have on the roster, and is it not the case that the McDaniels’ offense does not use many fullback sets?

Fullbacks

Depends on your point of view. Larsen is a ‘true’ fullback who hasn’t played due to injury. But the definition of fullback is at question here. McD has said quite often that they don’t really label anyone that way. They have 2 RB sets in which one blocks for the other, and that’s what most folks mean. However – the Broncos don’t designate a player that way.
