Thursday Night Football Game Thread: Bears @ 49ers watch our draft pick rise!

Well Cutler is off to a fantastic start!  Already 2 interceptions (To be fair the 2nd Int Hester slipped).  49ers up 7-0 (as of 7:30 pm MST).  This is a good game to see if the 49ers are legit.  The Bears D is hurt and has been shredded the last few weeks.  It is humorous to see Cutler meltdown and our draft pick get ever so higher next year (Top 10 at this rate).

Oh, these little karma-fests are fun, aren't they?

I’m not ragging on Jay to bad tonight. I think it has jinxed Orton that I have been so snarky in the last couple of weeks.

I do think that's the most likely scenario.

I just don’t see SHanny going to Dallas, because I don’t think JJones will give him enough control. I doubt SHanny would be interested in the Cleveland job. He already turned down the redskins, right?

It is amazing how they say he had to make that decision,

I say that out of mid-season caution. I DID just buy my orange Orton jersey, and I LOVE the guy’s work ethic and leadership, which is what I hated about Cutler. So I’m happy with KO. I’m just not ready to “Toldja So” the bears fans yet……

Cutler's trifecta

This from ESPN:

49ers quarterback Alex Smith entered Thursday night with the highest red zone passer rating in the NFL among players with at least 10 attempts. He had completed 8 of 11 passes for 55 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 123.1 rating, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Bears’ Jay Cutler, already picked off in the red zone Thursday night, entered this game with the NFL’s sixth-worst passer rating in the red zone this season. Cutler had completed 23 of 45 passes for 126 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions in the red zone, good for a 69.0 rating.

But you know, he has one heckuva arm!!

Out of interest

not just trying to rag on Jay (well not too much), I’d like to see a ‘points per yard’ rating for QB’s, I’d wager quite a bit that Jay would be the worst in that category, mainly down to the red zone INT’s and such

by djmbluemoon on Nov 12, 2009 8:28 PM MST reply actions

that would be a brilliant stat

a true indicator of QB efficiency. Of course, it wouldn’t say much for ball control, which is equally important.

it'd be something to consider in terms of effectiveness

of course, it varies on many things not just the QB, I’d imagine the Broncos and Orton aren’t so hot in it this year either, case in point being the first half of the Steelers game, 200 yards offense and 3 points

Can’t run, short passes doing nothing. It’s frustrating to watch. Though not so much as when the Broncos can’t do anything. ;)

2 against Minnesota, Green Bay, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit, St Louis…I could easily see them losing 4 or 5 of them, which would put them at either 7-9 or 6-10, so you’re probably about right

JAY CUTLER is why we are losing tonight.
Period. No excuses. Quit trying to justify "the franchise". He IS why we are losing. The D’s been solid. Hester caused 1 pick, but Jay is giving the 49er’s the game. Apologists STOP. Jay’s been WELL BELOW average this season. And YES, F*CK YES, Orton would’ve done better.

Yup

And he still might be. But he’s not ready yet — and if teams keep enabling him, it may never happen.

If and when it does, he could be one of the great ones. I hated to lose him, but what we have now is a team first guy who will get the maximum out of his ability.

And that’s a better fit for real Bronco fans.

For instance, all good to great QBs goto the sidelines after a good drive or a bad drive, go over the photos of what happened to see what has been working/not working and where you messed up. But Cutler always just went and sat by himself like he was too good and/or ignorant.

And would someone fix his damn helmet.. Maybe if he could see the field he could see who the hell he’s throwing it to.

by gnarlybroncodude on Nov 12, 2009 9:56 PM MST up reply actions

me, i'm angry

I put up one hell of a defense for the man time after time on rival threads… to the point where I almost feel like going back, a year or two later, and saying “i was wrong and you were right!”

I defended Jay to the teeth back then, partly because I didn’t feel people should be dogging our QB, but also because I felt like his skills were so spectacular that with a little learning and maturity he would become another 7 someday (yes, that’s what I thought, I’m not afraid to say it). But 6 does not now and never will equal 7. That’s the thing I’m most ashamed of.

When it became clear he would not be a Bronco under McD, I got really really mad at him for not living up to my expectations. And that’s just foolishness on my part. Because it turns out that the guy I thought I was cheering for — well, he doesn’t really exist.

Of course he’s going to try to carry the offense but if everything else isn’t where it needs to be then of course he’s going to play like an idiot. Yes our receivers are coming along but they are not elite and still have a lot to learn. Our line has proved again that it’s beyond terrible. Our D showed life only for their own self-respect and not for the team. Yes the season is more than likely lost but i’d still take Cutler over Orton or Grossman or any other buster qb any day. Give Cutler the same weapons and line the top qb’s have and i bet we dont have these discussions.

Does any of this sound familiar when he was on our squad. It is sad that people still defend him when he is a HUGE reason they have a losing record

Idaho, I wouldn't be surprised to see his tenure last about three years and then move on again.

You know who Cutler needs to turn himself around?

A guy who will take no BS from him and tell him EXACTLY what he needs to do.

The Tuna.

Wonder if they could lure him from Miami?

One thing’s for sure — Shanahan would just enable him some more.

Cutler would roll into a ball and cry

Elway told him to man up and stay in Denver when he was throwing his hissy fit. Fat lot of good advice from a HOFef did….

It is Sad

When are people going to admit that he is OVERRATED. He has all the physical tools but he is missing the Mental tools. He has not progressed at all the last couple seasons. Using the excuse that there is no talent around him does not work because he had a ton of offensive talent in Denver and he still threw a ton of INT and lost us a ton of games

Just replace Orton and Grossman with Griese and Plummer.

Didn't Orton play with the same recievers/line

Maybe even worse recievers and line in Chicago last year, and didn’t he perform better last year than Cutler has this year?

POLL QUESTION

on csnchicago.com:

What’s the major reason Jay Cutler leads the NFL with 17 interceptions?

 : A.) Poor decision-making (Red Zone)
 : B.) Bad mechanics
: C.) Receivers not helping him out
: D.) No protection from offensive line
 : E.) Predictable play-calling

How y’all voting?

Me, I think it’s a shame there’s not a G.) Doesn’t respond well to coaching

I think the Bears should goto a Defense Offense.

In otherwords, everytime the Offense goes on the field, you kneel down. Defense has a better chance to score, and wuld of prevented all the 49ers points.

I feel so sorry for Jay

well, maybe feasible

with the caveat that Jay would have had to buckle down and reinvent his whole style to pretty much match what we have in KO.

I think the problem with most of the pundits’ perceptions of Jay is that he has all the tools KO has PLUS the rocket arm. Actually, it’s pretty much just the rocket arm.

If the Bears keep playing like this

we get a top 10 pick. The draft is deep next year, we could trade down if their is not a player McD likes and get a few more draft picks that would be included in the cutler trade lol

by gnarlybroncodude on Nov 12, 2009 10:03 PM MST reply actions

I think trading down is under-rated

Every team wants that “signature pick” moment, but unless you are really only one player away from greatness it usually makes more sense to go for depth and balance on your team.

I’d love to see the Broncos roll picks forward – if the Bears pick is really good, trade an early #1 pick in 2010 for a later #1 and a #1 in 2011. That way, when a can’t-miss QB or RB comes up (don’t see one in 2010), they have the ammo to go get them. Or they find out that they snagged a Joe Montana in the 3rd round….

by ClarkFan on Nov 12, 2009 10:11 PM MST up reply actions

If it is a top 10 pick

trading down to stockpile more picks would be the best move. If we could trade down and get a lower pick next year and a another #1 pick in 2011 would be great. The only way we do not trade down is if there is a can’t miss superstar type player. Like a Patrick willis or Jerod Mayo type player

Does Cutler call audibles?

The Bears play balance was pretty wierd. They used to be able to run the ball, but in a low scoring game they had a 52/21 pass/run balance. Could Cutler have been calling his own number just a little too often?

This must be a tough year to be a 49ers fan, too

The opposing quarterback does his best to gift wrap the game for you, and your offense keeps refusing to open the gift. They don’t have a real strong schedule left, but they look like they can play down to anybody.

They own the tie breaker over the Bears, though!

by ClarkFan on Nov 12, 2009 10:27 PM MST reply actions

Cutler threw more INTs this game than KO has all year. I’ll take that.
