Ask Hogs Haven: Your Redskins Questions Answered...
Hello MHR. This is Kevin, the SB Nation writer for the Redskins site, Hogs Haven. If you have any Redskins-related questions, feel free to ask in the comments and we'll answer em. Couple notes for the game:
- Portis is out (much against his will)
- Skins have 3 undrafted lineman starting this week (yea, it's really bad. Campbell was getting sacked on 3-step drops last week)
- Haynesworth and the defense have played well this year (except for poor tackling at the most opportune times)
- Yes, Skins fans are still banned from bringing in signs to the stadium, though it all started when the negativity began towards the ownership
- Skins are decimated by injuries. Chris Samuels, Randy Thomas, and starting SS Chris Horton are all on IR...almost every other player is limping through practice. Portis' backup, Ladell Betts, was out Thursday but is expected to play. Of course Chris Cooley is still on crutches.
We're hoping the short week and cross-country trip helps us eek a win...we're not holding our breath though.

What was Betts out for on Thursday?
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

The Skins are toothless...
just as Guru et al can comment on insider Browns-nation, as a life-long, PG County/DC/Skins resident, I can say the Skins will pose no threat this weekend. My question is this: what are the Skins really capable of when they have many fans openly rooting against them (I have multiple friends I grew up with who want the Skins to implode so that they can finally rebuild the right way), a team decimated by injuries, and a team with no visible leader. I’m not making fun, I really want to know what can we expect from a team that has no direction, no hope and no leaders? As someone who lived through the glory years here, I am really curious to hear how the Skins will put up a fight. The only thing I’m afraid of is Albert Haynesworth.

Young guys making an impact...
Orakpo, who we took the pick after the Broncos, has been a stud. It’s all about playing the youth and evaluating the talent so we know who to cut w/ the uncapped year next year.
bye bye Portis.

Here’s what I don’t understand… Supposedly, Snyder is the problem with the Skins. But the Skins have like the number 5 D in the league. They’re not the Rams (nevermind they only beat them 9-6). They’re not ranked near dead last in every category. So if Snyder is the problem, if the problem absolutely comes from the top, then why are they so great on defense and only bad on offense? Did they just luck on on their D coordinator? Or if Snyde is supposedly making personnel decisions (or C), why has he made good decisions on D and bad decisions on O? It doesn’t make sense.
I saw the Redskins/Eagles game. The Redskins play excellent field position ball. All they need is a good opportunistic offense. Their defense is putting the offense in good positions. But I don’t see any confidence out of the offense. What is up with that?
As I see it, the Skins D is a shutdown D, not a takewaway D. They’re not going to win games on their own. They’re not likely to score. They just don’t give up yards or points easy. Is this a cap issue? I mean, what’s the deal? How do you wind up so extremely lopsided?
by Orange Rush on Nov 12, 2009 10:01 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Keep in mind
The Skins built that #5 D by facing the weakest schedule in the league. It is likely that their D is only average at best when you look at the big picture. I look for Denver to finally play a complete game and blow out the Skins on Sunday.

I'd also add
the Washington pass defense has been its strength. But, not that good against the run.

Partly true...
Skins had the 4th ranked D last year, but were ranked 28th in turnovers and sacks….which is why Haynesworh was brought in. The success of the D is really built on the draft picks and acquisitions of Greg Williams from 3 years ago.
London Fletcher is the true leader of this team. Rocky McIntosh, Carlos Rogers, Landry, Andre Carter, Cornelius Griffin…all these guys were brought in when Gibbs and Williams had 100% full control.

Kind of quite here.. but its a riot over at the bars/49ers thread!
I expect things will pick up here when that debacle has resolved itself.
I disagree with the thought that the Skin’s have no chance. Good defense, surprisingly poor offense. Get a breeak r two, find a way t put ups some pojts, you can win any game.
So, WHY DOES THE OFFENSE HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM? I don’t buy that its the QB, and even when CP was not hurt, the O had troubles. What’s up?
by idahobronc on Nov 12, 2009 10:31 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Offensive line...
Last time they used a 1st or 2nd round pick on an olineman was Chris Samuels TEN YEARS AGO. Half of the Oline this Sunday are undrafted journeyman bouncing around practice squads. It’s an embarrassment. Samuels and Randy Thomas had season ending injuries last year and the skins STILL did not draft an Offensive lineman this year.
When Vinny Cerrato was asked to defend hinself 2 weeks ago, he said “Well, we brought in Dockery and Mike Williams.” Mike Williams was 450 pounds and out of the league for 2 years. Total f’n joke.

Very unlikely he stays...
Change needs to come. Sad, but Zorn never had a chance w/ the OLine Cerrato gave him. They burned their 3 second round picks last year ALL on WRs and none of them are contributing at all still. Matt Millen anyone?
Zorn has made some horrible play-calls (Portis throwing the ball on 3rd and 1 from the goalline) etc…but the truth is, the players are not executing and Campbell is getting sacked on 3-step drops.

What do you feel will be the plan off attack for your D against our O?
Who will be trying to take on Clady?
Have your DB’s been playing press or man?
Who will be put on Scheffler when he gets split out wide?
What about when Buck / Knowshon get split out?
Any significant injuries that might change your gameplan beyond Portis?
What do you all feel about Landry and his growth / prospects? He was a high first round pick, do you feel he was worth it?

Skins pass rush has been scary good this year. Haynesworth has been a MONSTER up the middle leaving Orakpo and Andre Carter 1-1s…if it aint’ broke….
Orakpo will be seeing Clady on rushing downs. He plays SAM on passing plays and has been getting torn up (still learning since at Texas he was true DE)
DB’s have been playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage … so maddening.
Load of injuries. Cooley is big. Hunter Smith the punter is out, so that hurts our special teams. Losing Chris Samuels is what broke the camel’s back. Especially since it was a career ender.
Landry has been horrible. WHen Sean Taylor died, they moved him from his natural position of SS to FS, where he has been a ghost (no INTs this year) and he takes horribles lines on tackles. He has several PF penalties that have killed the Skins. Chris Horton, our stud SS was just put on IR this week, so Landry might move back to SS this week. Landry and Taylor were a perfect match b/c Landry is a beast when he is up at the line of scrimmage…so tough to say whether i regret the pick or not.

Why do you believe the Skins have been doing so well in pass defense?
Also,
2) Do you have any comment on the sideline scuffle with Atlanta?
3) Any developments on the Sean Taylor tragedy? I know it is old news, but I haven’t heard of any developments.
4) What do you think is going to happen with Zorn?
5) Are most fans against Snyder, or is it a vocal minority? He spends a lot of money on his team, so do you think the gripes are that he micromanages the coaches or the management? Do you think anything will change?
6) The Skins are in a very tough division. What do they need to do to become competitive?
Thanks for your time, and good luck on Sunday!

Corners..
Skins have very good corners. Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall can protect with the best of them. Unfortunately, Rogers cannot catch worth a damn, and Hall tackles as good as Mary-Kate Olsen.
As for the scuffle, Landry deserved the flag but Coach Smith was way out of line. Hall clearly got grabbed by the one ATL coach then Mike Smith, who’s suppose to be the voice of reason, got in his face. DHall had nothing to do w/ that play, which the NFL agreed with not fining him but Coach Smith $15K
3.) Sean Taylor trials are still dragging since the thugs are young. They keep changing their pleas. They’ll never see daylight anytime soon.
4.) Zorn likely will be canned, but Snyder doesn’t want to pay the remainder of his contract. Snyder was hoping he’d quit when he stripped his play-calling. THat back-fired.
5.) EVERY fan is against Snyder. Even before this year most people hated him. It’s blown up this year nationally, but we still haven’t gotten over the Spurrier era.
6.) A GM that knows their head from their ass. Cerrato has killed this franchise the way he’s traded away picks and drafted 3 busts in the 2nd round last year.

Regarding signs at the stadium,
have you seen the Fire Snyder sign proposed for this game? How do you feel about this?
At this point, would you seriously consider trading owners with the Raiders?
Man, I feel for you guys. Watching what you’ve been through is like the worst part of a marriage right before the divorce or murder/suicide.
Given the current state of dysfunction in the organization, are you ready to start openly rooting against your beloved ’skins in the hopes of sparking regime change or is that out of the question?

Signs
Yea, I get emailed at least 10 things a day about different Snyder stunts or Anti-Snyder facebook groups. I won’t contribute to it, but I 100% understand why fans are doing it. Snyder has been raping the fans with every charge imaginable. The advertisements over the PA system b/w ALL timeouts has killed thegame experience for me. I’m handing in my season tix after this season.
If Snyder fires Cerrato, he will be a loved man again. Will it happen? Hopefully.

Love Orakpo
I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing him at camp. 100% work horse and nice guy. What’s funny is the Skins tried to trade up to #12 from our #13 and McDaniels said “No..don’t worry about it.”…you definitely could have gotten our #3 from us.
Chris Samuels, who has only played against the best, gave him very high praise, and Samuels never does that. Called him a “bull.”

Questions for you guys: Shanahan
Mike Shanahan is one of the lead names for the Skins (potential) Head Coaching job next year. I am writing an article now evaluating his pros/cons and would love to get your thoughts/reactions on Mike being the next coach if you were Skins fans?
I had a phone interview with Karl Mecklenberg yesterday about his book and I threw in a Shanahan question. He felt Mike was in over his head being the GM and Head coach, and he didn’t think Mike would want to come to Washington and hand those responsibilities over to someone else. He also said a couple bad apples ruined the locker room and the only way to fix the situation was to clean house.
I’m torn with Shanahan since he clearly has an eye for drafting (all those RBs), but Denver just seemed to tank every year. Was Elway the difference there?
Thanks in advance.
by KevinE on Nov 13, 2009 4:46 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I think
that Shanahan is still a good coach and is an excellent strategist. He is even a good play caller. He just needs to ease up on the control issues and stick to coaching because he has a bad history with personnel decisions. If his ego can handle having a GM partner, he will do wonders for any team he decides to go to.
It appears that Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato suffer from cronyism. It would be difficult to say if VC and Mike can co exist. It would be wise to keep Greg Blache and Joe Bugel, in my opinion. Rumor has it, that Shanahan is trying to bring Larry Coyer with him. Bad Move.
On another note. How is Jeremy Jarmon coming along. I did a post on the Supplemental Draft and wondered how things are working out. Do you think he was worth the pick, or is it too early to tell yet?

Thanks...
What’s wrong with Larry Coyer? I don’t know a lot about him but he seems to be doing well @ IND.
Yea, Shanahan and Cerrato are friendly, so that’s scares DC a bit that it would save Vinny his job.
As for Jeremy Jarmon, he is looking like the real deal and well worth a 3rd round pick. His stats are low, tho he does have a forced fumble, but his presence is known when he is out there. Cerrato did some good with this one (it appears).

Did he have an eye for running backs?
Some here are more qualified than me to answer, but my impression is that Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme and our running backs coach created a system in which many backs could get yards. I don’t think it was necessarily an eye for talent. He had some lucky breaks, and a great 2008 draft, but a lot of busts. Someone here at MHR did a post on that…. and I don’t know how to find it. There was a list of all of Shanahan’s draft picks, and the poster traced that history to see which ones were busts. There were MANY busts, as I recall. In the end, Shanahan had taken on so many “pet” projects that we had no continuity and a lot of bad apples in the locker room. The list of players with either injury histories or off-field issues histories reads like Oakland’s most wanted: Travis Henry, Maurice Clarrett, Javon Walker, just to name a few. SHanahan’s “eye” for personnel was the eye of a Dollar Store shopper. He’ll take all the factory seconds in hopes of finding a treasure, based on the one success story of Terrell Davis. I think he actually believed that he could turn any back into a star, after the media repeated it enough times.
In any case, I think that being fired was a wake up call, and Mike is too smart not to realize he needs to learn some more things about the new NFL to be effective. I think he has done his homework leading up to this season. I would trust him to turn a team around. Watch that defensive baggage, though. If he brings Slowik, my experience says you’re in trouble.

Why didn't Gregg Williams get the Head Coaching Job?
I had always been under the impression that when Gibbs retired, Williams was supposed to inherit the HC job. He seems to have turned New Orleans defense into the type of defense Washington used to have. Any regrets there?
Do you think Marty Schottenheimer got run out of town too soon when he was HC in Washington? I know they had a terrible start that year but he turned it around by the end of that year. I always felt they Skins should have kept Marty longer.
If you get Shanahan, you had better hope he brings a GM with him. He has an eye for talent but was in too deep with both GM & HC jobs. He ialso needs to let a DC get a 3 year run instead of blaming them and firing them every year. Shanahan will give you a great offense and entertaining brand of football. I wonder if he would go to the Skins without a bonafide QB there. A part of his hre would probably be agreeing to trying to draft/trade for a quality QB.

Gregg
He actually had a clause in his contract that he’d be the next HC or get $1 million….Skins decided to let him go anyway. Williams has a very large ego, and it didn’t mesh well with DC. Gregg firmly believes it’s his system not the players that make him so successful. He fractured the team a bit the way he just benched Lavar Arrington, a fan favorite. But the real reason is he lets successful players go when they earned their pay day. Antonio Pierce was a great LB for washington and when his contract was up, Gregg told Snyder no need to re-sign him…we’ll be fine. That definitely was not the case and the Skins struggled until they were able to bring in London Fletcher. The Skins front office went to the players and it was clear there would be some probs making Gregg the next HC.

Portis - Bailey Trade?
I’m curious how Skins fans view the big trade a few years later.
I was working in D.C. before that happened and had buddy who would always harp on— jokingly of course— how the Broncos ought to trade Portis to the Skins. I always replied that he really needed to lay off the glue. Shows you what I know….
Anyway, do folks wax sentimental for Bailey or is the trade viewed as a win for Washington?
by PredominantlyOrange on Nov 14, 2009 8:21 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
It's about split...
Skins desperately needed a RB and Bailey was under-performing in DC…just like all the free agents Snyder brought in. Gibbs needs a particular RB for his scheme, and in his transition to clean up Spurrier’s mess, he needed Portis. What kills us in DC is that we threw in that 2nd round pick? I remember back then and even now….Why was that trade not straight up?
(Answer: Every team robs the Skins of draft picks. See Bill Parcells last year trading Jason Taylor for a 2 and a 6…and they get him back the next year.)
by KevinE on Nov 15, 2009 12:41 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I wasn't very happy at first...
…my impression of Bailey, for some reason, was that he was a Sanders type— cover guy that wouldn’t tackle. I was was very surprised at how hard nose a player he his. He should have been Defensive MVP in 2005, and can usually be counted on to totally shutdown the left side in the passing game. Since Denver has had success post Portis in the running game, I’ve always viewed it as a win for both sides. That extra second rounder became Tatum Bell (I’m pretty sure, at least), who showed tantalizing promise, but ultimately never gained the confidence of the coaching staff. I believe he plays for the Florida Tuskers now.

Running backs
Sorry if this was answered before, but who are the Skins’ other RBs after Portis and Betts? Anyone to worry about?
Sorry about all the injuries (especially Cooley, since he was my fantasy fb starting TE on two teams!)
I feel like the game should be close because the Skins’ D can been solid, as has Denver’s. It could be a low scoring game. Unless Denver’s offense finally shows up again.

I'm still nervous about this game.
I’m not as nervous as I would have been last year, but there is something about the matchup that tells me our offense is going to struggle again. I don’t know. I guess if the skins run D is less than spectacular, we should be able to get a decent running game going. Buckhalter had been getting yards in chunks prior to meeting the Ravens and Steelers. THose teams just manhandled our o-line up front, and stuffed our run on the way to flattening our QB. Even when he wanted to pass, it wasn’t the safeties that killed us, it was the pass rush. Orton had NO time, which caused our lack of O. I’m sure our offensive line will be hungry, but the physical matchup will determine the outcome of this game. Stop our Oline, and I think you have a good shot. Give the run game time to develop, and you allow ORton time to let plays develop, and Broncos win. Even if the skins do hold our offense down, from what you said, our Deense should be able to score enough points to win. Congratulations on your new punter, Mitch Berger. He should give you guys some great field position LOL.
We’ll see on Sunday! Thanks for coming over!
