I’ve always said Jeremy Bates made Cutler worse as Cutler regressed from a hot start in 2008 to a poor finish. I still think Jeremy Bates was/is a lousy coach, but Cutler has regressed yet again in 2009. He was a much better player 20 games ago than he is today. That’s not good when you are just 26 years old and in your 4th season.
The Bears have to feel some serious buyer’s remorse today. So now they are 4-5 and will not finish with anything better than a 7-9 record. I expect Denver will have something like the 14th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Thats gonna hurt their fans too.

Not happy as I was dumb enough to start him in fantasy
But at this point I’m envisioning some sort of Cutler reclamation project led by Shanny in about three years once Jay gets run out of Chicago.

Didn't Shannahan explicitly say he wanted Jay to take cances, to not throw the ball away?
I think that hurt him as much as anything. Turnovers cost you football games, as Lebowski would say— that stat doesn’t lie. To be fair to Jay, I’ll give him the same pass I give Orton to a certain extent— it’s his first year in a new system, it’s his first year playing with his receivers (except Bennet, I guess), etc. In fact, Cutler may have it worse because he’s going from arguably the most QB-friendly offense ever to perhaps the least QB-friendly offense, while Orton goes from Chicago to a very QB-friendly offense.
However, the biggest problem with Jay is his near refusal to take a sack or throw the ball away. He’s always trying to make a play, which maybe isn’t a bad strategy when you’re in Mike Shannahan’s offense throwing to playmakers like Stokely, Eddie, Scheffler, and BMarsh. Now he’s in Turner’s offense with Hester, Bennet, Knox, and Olsen. I think he just threw another pick.

Martz told Warner the same thing...
and, if you believe CHFF he’s a better playoff QB than Manning. I think his Cardinals numbers last year are factored in too, for what it’s worth.

Cutler is the gift that keeps on giving
Chicago’s remaining schedule goes like this, Philly, @Min, St. Louis, Green Bay, @Balt, Min, @Det. Only two easy ones left(STL, DET) A 6-10 record is definitely possible, giving us an 8,9, or 10 draft pick. Couldn’t imagine our FO spending the money on a top 10 pick, so we’ll trade up, and recieve more draft picks in exchange.
Could Cutler be our Santa this December =). He does know a thing or two about giving being from Santa Claus Indiana.

I'd like to see something from HT regarding how we defend against the hurry-up/no-huddle.
That issue has me more concerned than the offensive woes.

Countering the no-huddle.
I may need to do a MHR-U piece on the no huddle. It is getting a lot of attention for Denver fans recently, and there is a lot of material one could put into an article.
There are many reasons to go no-huddle. Against Denver, the #1 reason is because we like to heavily rotate our front 7. How do we counter that?
When a team goes hurry-up, they risk mistakes. This is the major draw back of the hurry-up. The trade-off is that the defense has to keep their guys on the field, and this wears them down. The best way to counter a hurry-up (in my opinion) is to stop the momentum. This can be done with a radical shift in formation, a major “show blitz” where the QB might have to call a time out, a defensive time out, or (in an extreme case) a purposeful penalty to stop the clock.
Some DCs will have three or four set plays to counter the hurry up (such as a base man or zone play). For example, when I see my defensive players caught on the field, I may call a simple zone play, and leave the team in that play for two or three downs, then switch to very simple man play. This prevents confusion from trying to send in more complex plays during limited time. (Many defenses fall into the mistake of trying to “do it all”, which causes players to be confused and out of position. Coaches need to remember that remembering formations, sets, and assignments are a lot easier for the coach on the sideline holding the play chart than for the players).
“Show blitzes” (bringing a lot of guys to the line) are good, because confusion on the part of an offensive line is perhaps the top way to cause a time out during a no-huddle. They are better than actual blitzes, because an actual blitz is going to wear down a defensive player quickly.
As with any good conditioning program, endurance training is key to countering no-huddle.
The best way to counter the no-huddle is to keep things simple. The offense may pick up some yards and even downs, but they are also risking mistakes by playing a quick series of plays. Don’t give up the big play, don’t try to make too many adjustments in assignments, and just outplay the opponents.
If things are this simple, why has Denver been exposed? My guess is that much of what we do is predicated on certain players with certain assignments in certain situations. This makes simplification very difficult. As the defense gets more experienve playing together and with the new DC, the effects of no-huddle should clear up over time. Remember, most of our starters on defense are new to the team, and our defensive system is radicaly different from last year. Over time, the things we do on defense will seem even simpler to our guys, and we’ll do a better job handling no-huddles.

Good stuff. Me, I’m a big fan of the "nickel linebacker falls down and fakes injury" play.
by JeffG on Nov 13, 2009 9:27 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Exposure
My feeling is that our base and nickel packages are so different personnel-wise that teams are targeting matchups they feel are favorable. If I’m not mistaken, our nickel features four linebackers— DOOM, Ayres, Woodyard, DJ— and essentially subs the extra DB for one of our big bodies up front. In addition, Reid often plays DE or NT in the sub packages.
If I’m not mistaken, most defenses simply sub a linebacker and for a defensive back, no? Isn’t that what the Shanny D’s did (I remember DJ coming off the field when he was @ SAM)? I guess we may be essentially subbing a LB for a DB, as Doom usually goes from standing OLB to hand-in-dirt DE, but since DOOM is simply changing positions, the sub, in essence, is DB for big body (WW subs Davis, Ayres subs Haggen). This turnover in personnel seems extreme when compared to other Bronco teams and other games I watch— out goes [Feilds, McBean, and/or Peterson], Haggen, and Davis, in comes [Reid], Woodyard, Ayres, and Law . As we all know, different players (skill-sets) create different matchups, and the teams coming off bye weeks probably saw something they liked.
Anyway, nice question ssc and nice analysis Mr. Nichols.
by ButteBronco on Nov 13, 2009 9:59 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
You are correct
in that a 4-3 team will often trade a linebacker for the nickel, and Shanny generally took out the SLB (at least the last couple years I remember). However, they will also change up linemen as well. I think it varies greatly depending on team how the linemen get changed, but with past Shanny teams we saw people like Patrick Chukwurah come in for passing situations and people like Engelberger sub out. Chukwurah was basically a 3-4 OLB, which actually works well as a pass rush specialist in a 4-3 (IMO). Also, the tackles often get smaller and more penetration-minded, Dewayne Robertson would usually come out and someone like a Josh Shaw or Nic Clemons or maybe even Peterson would come in? It’s amazing how fuzzy my memory of last year is already. Perhaps that’s what that memory repression thing is.
Now, with our defense, I think things are even more confusing, since as HT is fond of pointing out we really run a 5-2, but no one will really call it that publicly. I think what we are seeing in the nickel commonly is our line going down to a four man front, often with the likes of Doom, Holliday, Reid, and Ayers, or also often with Smith as a tackle, Holliday and Reid on end, and Doom standing up on either end of the line (no Ayers this time). Of course last game we saw some of Moss in the nickel D because Smith was starting for McBean, so I don’t think he saw much time in the nickel packages.

i would add a time-consuming offense is a good deterrent
you wouldn’t run a no-huddle against the 97-98 broncos because the price of failure was having your defense exhausted by an unfavorable T.O.P.
conversely, i think opposing teams are more ok with risking the no-huddle against the 09 broncos, because the 09 offense (so far) isn’t wearing down your defense.
