Horse Tracks 11/14/09 - Ryan Harris out; LK Smith starting in place of McBean, who is listed as questionable

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning, MHR Friends! My brother-in-law Brock (who's a big Packers fan) asked me an interesting question the other day, about whether I thought Mike Shanahan could end up coaching Green Bay next year. At first, I gave him a quick "Are you nuts?!" but after thinking about it my curiosity was piqued; great young QB, decent defense, coach and GM under fire - O-Line and running game in need of fixing - perhaps a Shanny/Gibbs special. Last night, some talking head mentioned a possible reunion with Cutler in Chicago, with Lovie Smith now on the hot seat. Personally, I've had Shanny heading to Dallas next year in my mind all along; but now what if Wade and the Boys go deep into the playoffs? Would Shanny really work for Dan Snyder in Washington? What do you folks think?

Thanks Doug...

Jason Cole is a below average writer with little or no knowledge….and I was surprised by Silver’s reaction…..he seems to think Denver will be fine.
REAL SCOUTS….they should keep scouting…..some of there prognostications are insane!

Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

Thanks Doug, about your poll... I to would have said Shanny would

go to Dallas, but now, I really don’t know. I do hope its in the NFC though.

I have had Shanny going to Dallas as well...And I still think so...

I’m not sold that the Dallas turn-around is for real…They still have a long ways to go and some tough games ahead…I believe that Jerry Jones has already made up his mind to let Phillips go unless he is able to get the Cowboys to at least the NFC title game, and that happening would be a stretch…IMO

Where in the World Will Shanahan Go?

Not that I want to see this happen, but I am expecting Shanahan to end up in San Diego. Turner is on the hot seat for failure of San Diego to do better with him than Marty, it is great golf country, and he gets revenge on Bowlen for letting him go. I was never a big Shanahan fan (great offensive coordinator, not so great head coach/personnel man), but I respect his ability and hate to see Denver have to face him twice a year. I agree Chicago could be a possible landing spot and have said so much earlier in the season. Jerry Jones and Shanahan? Maybe, but I don’t see it. And I really don’t see Green Bay. He won’t like the winter there. Its not a Colorado kind of winter. Its brutal.

Shanny in SD: One of My Biggest Fears

Opinion8r- that is what I worry about s well. Especially if SD finishes at .500 or below with Denver beginning to re-emerge as the AFC West favoritewith a young coach and a team that should be very competitive for a while. Norv continues to show that he is not a great head coach. A strong QB- locked up for a long time in Rivers and some of the best year-round weather in country- and most of all a chance to stick it to Bowlen like he did to Davis. However, the only exception to that is we have a better owner, coach and team then the Raiders and thus we won’t go down easily- if at all. If he goes to SD- then bring it on- because him being on the other side will be motivation for us as well. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Shanny and the other "older" coaches may have trouble getting jobs

To me, the league looks like it is looking for younger coaches with new ideas and less retreads whose messages have worn out at other teams. The successes at Denver, Atlanta, Balt NO just to name a few are setting a trend away from older more expensive coaches. Shanny also has shown himself as a weak genl manager (eg Denvers drafts and 30 million in dead money). The game changes and I think you need the young coordinators who are changing it as your head coaches.

Uh, who is the Redskins' third string RB?

If the Broncos can’t stop the Redskins’ offense I’ll be worried (and surprised). {knock on wood}

Washington ( I hope)

Hi guys, this is a great site that you have. I hope that Mike Shanahan ends up in Washington. I have always liked him as a coach & I think that his coaching philosophies are very much like ours ( Big strong O-Line ) & tough running game. Maybe a top flight D-coordinater to help altho our defense is pretty good right now, just very undisciplined. Again great site, good luck on Sunday

Thanks, END

You’re very kind, and thanks for visiting. Shanny would be well served to find a team that already has a solid D in place – after all, that was his Achilles heel in Denver. I’d only say that Shanny doesn’t prefer big and strong O-linemen – he’s more a fan of smaller, agile and athletic linemen for his favored zone-block scheme. Although I’m glad we don’t have to face him, I’m sad to see that CP is still feeling the effects of his concussion. Even though he only spent two years in Denver, I’m still a huge fan of his – it’s a shame, but a lot of my fellow Broncos fans didn’t appreciate how great a talent he is.

I will tell you my surprise theory

But don’t be surprised if Mike Shanahan ends up being a O.C./assisant HC for CU next season working with Kyle Shanahan. Despite Mike Bohn’s assuarnces that he will not dismiss Dan Hawkins, I think barring a miracle run in the last three games, that Hawkins will have to be removed at the end of the season, or there will be a mutiny by the fan base and boosters. I can see CU tapping Kyle Shanahan as a HC and Mike working a couple of years somewhat pro-bono with Kyle to get the program back up. Then I think Mike may look at moving back into the NFL, but I think he really doesn’t want to move from Colorado, he just built a huge house here, he has other business interests here, and the chance to work with his son I think would be too hard to resist.

I will say the other options I would see are Norte Dame (he is from the midwest and I believe he is Catholic) and Dallas. I could see Chicago, but I think he probably rather stay here.

That is a well put together thought Broncoman

It does make sense. You don’t spend all that time and money on a house just to move. I have been thinking that if he goes to College coaching that he might consider Illini, or Northern Illinois. He is an Alum from one or the other.

I think you are jumping the gun calling Aaron Rodgers a great young QB. Wait until that guy plays on a winner or stops taking dozens of unnecessary drive killing sacks before he gets the term “great” attached to his name.

Shanny will end up coaching the Boys or Bears.

That O-line is horrendous. Historically terrible. I understand that his record isn’t good so far, but not all great QBs win right away – Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman come to mind.

Show me another young QB (ever) with a QB rating like Rodgers in back-to-back seasons (granted, he could tail off – but he hasn’t yet despite all the pressure) and such a low INT % who isn’t/wasn’t a winner. I don’t think you’ll find it. Obviously, I cannot guarantee that Rodgers will have a great career – but I’d be shocked if he didn’t (assuming his line doesn’t get him killed before then). His 95.3 career QB rating is insanely good. In fact, it matches Peyton Manning and trails only Steve Young historically.

And yet his team keeps losing games like the one they just dropped to an winless Tampa team.

Is his O-line bad? What about the incredibility talented WRs he has to throw to or the highly paid RB or great home field advantage. Don’t act like he goes at it alone out there.

In order to improve their O-line, Green Bay will have to make sacrifices elsewhere.

Cutler gets killed at MHR for all the hollow yards he piled up as our QB. Well Aaron Rodgers also seems quite good at piling up great stats for a losing team. Color me unimpressed. Payton Manning or Steve Young, he is not.

Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler are NOT in the same class

It’s not even close.

Rodgers has 45 TDs in 24 starts, with a 5.3% TD rate.
Cutler has 68 TDs in 37 starts, with a 4.4% TD rate.
So, Rodgers throws TDs 20% more often than Cutler does (5.3 is 20% greater than 4.4). In other words, you can’t tell me Rodgers throws for hollow yards in the way Cutler does.

Rodgers has 19 INTs and a 2.2% rate. That’s remarkable.
Cutler has 54 INTs and a 3.5% rate, which is atrocious (Favre’s career rate is 3.3%).
So, Cutler throws TDs at a rate 59% higher than Rodgers does.

Let’s be clear here. Jay Cutler does not put up great stats. He has not had one season yet approaching greatness, statistically. The hollow stats he puts up are the yards, which never equate greatness.

Rodgers just became a starter last year. Don’t forget that. No, Cutler hasn’t exactly been around forever, but his reputation as a loser is also magnified (unfairly) by his tenure at Vandy. I think it’s hard to label either of these guys as losers.

Why does GB have to make sacrifices? According to this, they have $16 million in cap space.

Rodgers and Co. have 4 losses this year – yes, last week to TB was bad. Very bad. But his other three losses came at the hands of Cincy once and Minnesota twice. In other words, games the Packers should have lost no matter who was playing QB, with that O-line. Last year, Rodgers and Co. lost 10 games – 7 of them by less than 4 points. But in those seven losses, he never threw more than 1 INT.

I’m not absolving him of fault, I’m just pointing out the differences between Rodgers and Cutler. Those seven close losses? They came at the hands of Atlanta, Tennessee, Minnesota, Carolina, Houston, Jacksonville and Chicago. Of those seven teams, only Jacksonville was under .500 and those first four teams all won at least 10 games.

The three bigger losses came versus Dallas, Tampa Bay and New Orleans. All three of those teams were .500 or better. So, by my count Rodgers has lost 2 games to teams who ended up sub-.500 (assuming TB finishes that way this year). Cutler had 4 such losses in 2008 alone (OAK, KC, BUF, JAX).

Finally, Cutler has a career rating of 84.7, while Rodgers’ is 95.3 (12.5% better). That’s a HUGE difference.

One thought I forgot to complete...

Rodgers has thrown more than 1 INT in a game only 3 times (all losses).

Cutler has exceeded 1 INT in a game 13 times (he’s 2-11 in those games).

Rodgers takes a ton of sacks you can lay solely on his inability to scramble, throw away the ball or improvise.
