Australian Meanderings: Do we have rights as fans? How can we maintain positivity moving forward!
Hello my MHR Bretheren!
This is a totally therapeutic post, and hopefully you all will get something out of it too!
Well.........normally, I get over our losses pretty quickly. For those of you that dont know, I am pretty passionate, call a spade a spade and with the assistance of some maturity, I normally try and calm down before I rush to judgments. One of the reasons I stay off the game day pages is that I am WAY too passionate during game day, and things I say (and I am sure from most of us) come flying off the cuff in the heat of battle.
With the way I am, I expected to wake up this morning, be able to read Horse Tracks, and move on getting ready for San Diego......but I cant today! I am still REALLY pissed.......and actually WAY more pissed than any time last season.
This got me thinking why. Anyway, read on after the jump and see if any f you can relate......
- My expectations for the season: They were pretty simple actually. I compared our team a lot to the Packers of last year who lost 7 games by 4 points of less. They were a scant 21 points from a 13-3 season! I saw potential in our team to play tough, passionate football. I could really BUY into this team....they were passionate like me, had some edge (like me) and took no crap (how I think I am anyway). I wanted them to keep games close and go down swinging. I also expected them to win games they were supposed to win, be fundamentally sound with skills and show good leadership. I was buying in with what McDaniels was selling, I loved our draft and free agency period....I was stoked.
- My feelings after yesterday: Please, I am not going to sugar coat this, and this is MY OPINION ONLY based on what I have seen the last 3 weeks and particularly yesterday. THIS TEAM IS REGRESSING.....every minute of every day! When I look back on my simple expectations for the season, I have seen NONE of them the last 3 weeks. I have seen our defense come out flat, and give up big chunks in the run consistently. For example, Betts was falling forward for 3 yards a clip on BAD plays.....and that has happened the last 3 games from play 1. Our O line looks unfocused, or RB's dont hit holes (although Moreno was way better yesterday with use of some ZB looks). Special Teams are HORRENDOUS and our coaching is flat and devoid of personality or inventiveness. WE ARE NOT KEEPING GAMES CLOSE, WE ARE NOT THE SAME PASSIONATE TEAM AS WEEKS 1-6 AND WE ARE NOT BEATING TEAMS WE NEED TO BEAT........and its ticking me off!
- Boydy.....why so ticked off today???? That's a great question....why am I so ticked off? Well, i expect better of these guys: coaches and players. This is not the same team as last year. We dont have bobble head Webster starting for us, not Manuel, Josh Bell, Tatum Bell, McCree, Winborn, Darrell Jackson, Selvin Young, Dewayne Robertson or the bigger cast of Club Med veterans that Shanahan had assembled. We have assembled a MUCH better team, with some FA veterans like Dawkins and Goodman that should keep this team focused. We have a much better coaching staff......does anyone here REALLY prefer Slowik over Nolan......Child puhleasse! McDaniels is one of the brightest young minds in the business and we have the best owner in Pat Bowlen. (I am getting steamed just thinking about yesterday now). All this taken into account......LOSING TO THE REDSKINS YESTERDAY IS THE MOST UNACCEPTABLE LOSS (IN MY MIND) THAT I HAVE SEEN THIS TEAM SUFFER! To come out this flat on all sides of the ball when this was a game we should dominate as a springboard into the game of the season with the Chargers is not, will it EVER be acceptable. And please dont get me started on coaching......crappy all ways around but here are 3 things I could not believe with my own eyes: The special teams play that turned the game my 5 year old son saw coming....Preifer needs to be looking for a new job...TODAY! Simms seemed TOTALLY under prepared.....I get he has not played in 3 years....why are we signing a back up that has not played in 3 years.....and still no excuse why he does not have the accuracy to hit check downs and screens.....unacceptable. Why are we throwing a long bomb down field with a QB that cant even hit 10 yard check downs with Haynesworth off the field and Moreno finally looking like the back we drafted........wooh.........now breathe deep and think of a happy place Boydy.
- Do I, as a fan, have the right to be so invested in this team that it can make me nuts like this? This is the ultimate question! One of the biggest strengths of MHR is that our fan base is HUGE and PASSIONATE. Thats a great thing! But we have been calling each other out because of it. So that then got me thinking on this next question.......
- Do we have rights as fans? I am sure that my take on this may get conversation flowing. TOO BLOODY RIGHT .....WE HAVE EVERY RIGHTS AS FANS TO CALL OUT OUR TEAM WITH REGARDS TO DEBACLES LIKE YESTERDAY......AND PRAISE FOR WINS LIKE AGAINST NEW ENGLAND (ahh....the good ole days!). Not only are the Denver Broncos our team, of which we are emotionally invested, but the Broncos are part of the NFL, that when broken down into its simplest form is selling a product...not just football, but ENTERTAINMENT. Its a unscripted WWE! Any of us out there that have brought NFL products, bought tickets to games, subscribe to NFL services and red zone, are members of MHR are invested STAKEHOLDERS in our team......not shareholders......STAKEHOLDERS. We, as fans, are what makes this whole multi Billion dollar business tick. As a consumer and stakeholder in the Denver Broncos, I am very dissatisfied with the product in the past 3 weeks, and I analogize this to eating in your favorite restaurant. If I eat at my favorite restaurant once per week, and for 6 weeks straight it is superb. I take a holiday, come back in week 8 and the apps are good, the entree above average and the desert is so so. Service is still ok but not as good. It drops again in week 9.....you are treated badly and food is average. Week 10, you come back fully expecting a turn around (the chef is back, you have come at a quiet time where there is no stress.....there is no REASON for a bad performance).....but guess what....from the service you receive to the actual meal is REALLY crappy. WHat do you do? You love this restaurant, it has brought great memories, it is part of your life....do you walk away and not say anything? Do you keep quiet and hope it all turns around......OR do you go see the manager and voice your complaints? I would voice my complaints. I may not be a shareholder or part owner of said restaurant, but as a consumer, and one that is passionate about the restaurant.....MY restaurant....I have a right and personal investment to do so! SAME situation applies here......and so I am giving my complaint.......THAT WAS THE WORST PERFORMANCE SINCE WE GOT EMBARRASSED BY THE LIONS I HAVE EVER SEEN FROM MY DENVER BRONCOS.......Coach, we need to be inspired......and that was anything but!
- How can we get our positivity back? I kind of stumbled on a holistic approach! It was an eye opener, but also helped me to align my aspirations for our team in a legitimate place. After seeing us lose and the Chargers win, I was OVER football....ready to be done for the season. While working last night, I was watching a show, but started during the ads to go to the Colts vs Patriots game. Man, what a game! Gradually, I stopped watching the other show, and was tuned to this great game with 2 of the best teams, 2 of the GREATEST ever quarterbacks with one of the most shocking and greatest endings. Football provided PURE theatre...........Below are little hints that I hope we can all use to get our positivity back for our team.
- Start to love the GAME of NFL. Even if our team SUCKS (thats for you Doc!) there is still so much to love about the game.
- We are a talented team that is developing. I compared the Broncos with the Colts and Patriots last night and there is a lot to like. We are not in their league yet, but we have a lot going for us. Smart young coach, a QB that can make all the throws and will keep getting better (Kyle proved yesterday he has a great arm...so thats a positive and he is 5 or so years younger than Tom and Peyton), some good young talent and some veterans that still have some gas in the tank.
- Even with yesterdays result, we are probably further along than anyone of us thought. The fact that we are speaking about winning the division is awesome. Even if Chargers pass us, we will still be looking OK for a wild card, especially considering all the tie breakers.
- Everything our team is going thru now only sets itself up for success in the future.
- Dont listen to the MSM and all the doomsdayers. STAY HERE AT MHR, LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL AND COMMISERATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS!
This team is a moving target my friends and we need to be patient!
Hope you all enjoyed the read, and thank you for letting me vent ad using YOU guys as an outlet!
Peace, Boydy!

Boydy good read bro...
I have a few thoughts on the matter that I’ve stewed over for the last 18 hours or so. I’m all for people expressing their pleasure or displeasure with regards to the team. What annoys me and some others is people reacting unreasonably. For example there were more than a few yesterday claiming to be done with this team and such. Then be done with it, go. If we went 0-16 I would still not be done with this team, nor would I ever say that. This is my team. This is our team.
But I realize that we’re all different. We react differently. I’m more of a laid back even keel person. I get annoyed when we’re 6-0 and people are planning the parade route and I get annoyed when we are 6-3 and people are saying we suck and they’re done. I’m the guy in the corner saying “Chill man, relax” to both of the above scenarios. Here’s what I figured out just now. I can’t change someone no matter how many times I say “easy big fella.” So why am I bitching about it. It annoys me yes but what can I do. To each his own. I wish people could look at things with a little more perspective but not everybody will do that. Like you said thats part of being a fan emotionally invested. You get high (hehe Lebowski) and you get low.
So I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to keep coming here (why not, it’s the best site for Broncos fans) and I’m going to keep going to the game threads and surrounding myself with highs and lows and I’ll stay in the middle if anyone wants to join me. But one thing I’m not going to do is bitch about others anymore. We’re fans of the same team here, so let’s just remember that if things start to get a little hostile.

Agreed.
And to boydy, I can understand why you are upset, but sometimes unfortunate circumstances dictate the outcome of the game. If Orton slides instead of going for extra yardage, he stays healthy and we probably win and you probably don’t feel as upset as you are.. It’s a game and sometimes things just don’t go your way.
I didn’t say that to try and calm you down, because I realize it probably didn’t do anything. We still lost to the Redskins. However, I find it admirable that you aren’t going to quit on your team. That’s what makes a fan. If we lose the rest of our games this season and miss the playoffs, the real fans are not going to leave MHR. We stick by the broncos through thick and thin. That doesn’t mean we can’t get upset, because we can.
Everyone reacts differently. Some get angry, others are optimistic, others criticize. It’s completely fine, either way. As long as people stay away from verbally attacking other fans or speaking disrespectfully, there shouldn’t be any problems.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

this is where i don’t think you are being honest…as you say, it annoys you. (me too!)
once someone has annoyed you, it becomes nearly impossible not to judge them or evaluate them as ‘annoying’
and how many annoying people do you count as friends ?
how many annoying people do you invite into your home to watch the game with you ?
how many people that either refuse to or cannot control their emotions would you invite to your dinner table, after the game ?
the prevailing MHR philosophy with regards to the gameday threads is completely backwards in my opinion.
‘what goes on on the gameday threads stays on the gameday threads’
‘vent away’
‘say your piece’
its a happy place for troglodytes that like to punch drywall and throw things when things don’t go their way…its a crappy place for a Broncos fan.
the fact that MHR regulars who are able to control their gameday emotions have to stay away from those threads is a damning indictment of said threads, and of MHR management therein.
its like saying the only MHR community we will cater to are the loudmouths, because loudmouths bring ratings.
oh well. one less site hit on gameday.
5 more loudmouths will be along to replace you.

oh.
a solution. (i hate criticizing anything without offering a different course of action, so…)
we can rec a post and make it green.
we should be able to un’rec a post and make the text of that post gradually whiter.
eg 5 people un’rec a post and the text becomes invisible. (white text on white background)
deleting posts is all well and good for trolls, but there should also be a mechanism in place which allows the community @ MHR to police themselves.
so thats my proactive solution.
posts by users that quickly become invisible would allow everyone to identify the problem children, and allow the problem children to correct their improper behavior.

Love the idea
I’d actually like to be able to delete a FanPost that I think is of little use. This would allow the good ones to stay visible for longer.

So you're basically suggesting a more efficient flagging system???
I’m for it. I mean, sometimes there are things that go up that could be deleted right away and wouldn’t cause any problems, but Guru is a busy guy, so he can’t always respond right away. So maybe like an SBnation macro where when a certain number is reached, like Guru described last night on MHR radio, instead of Guru having to go in and delete it, it would just automatically go away???
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

honestly, i don't like the idea of users being given the power
to delete another users post, thats for management to decide.
…just make it invisible. management can then decide, after the fact.
and honestly you should have to have a lot of votes or un’recs before your text turns completely white.
more than it takes to turn a post green, for example.
that way, the prevailing opinion that your post sucks would have to be overwhelming…otherwise it just gets lighter.
thats my idea, anyways.
by Jenna Talia on Nov 16, 2009 10:10 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course.
I mean, obviously you can’t make it so that like 2 or 3 votes gets it erased. If there was anything that someone disagreed with, a user could abuse that vote. There would be a magic number for things like that and that number would be determined by management, but it wouldn’t be a low number.
It’s sort of how our rec’ds are different than other sites. Here, it takes 10 recds to get on the recommended posts, while at another blog it could take 3. It depends on how things are going and the amount of user traffic there is.
I don’t think a bad idea and it could work. It would also save Guru some time and put more responsibility on the users or group of users. Really, it’s not up to us, right now. It’s up to Guru. If he wants to delegate and make a “MHR police”, that is entirely up to him (or the SBNation site, for all I know). Maybe he doesn’t even have control over changing things like that. It might be an SB rule that he gets to play with a little bit. I’m not sure. I don’t know how the whole delegation of responsibility works for a staff member.
Maybe you could shoot Mr. Bena an email and see what he thinks about it.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

My idea for deleting a FanPost
is that it would just go away from my screen, so I wouldn’t be bothered by it. Then, when I’m scrolling through Recent Fanposts, i wouldn’t have to wonder if the next one is something I consider to be pretty lame (“Hi, I’m Pauly from Someplace, Iowa, and I just wanted to give my thoughts” and then a re-gurge of things that have been said a hundred times). and waste time clicking on it only to see “Hi, I’m Pauly….”

respectfully disagree Mr. Bena
since i know you are a parent, i know you probably already know this, but i’ll say it anyways because i think you are a parent of young children and may not have put this theory into practice yet.
one of the hardest things you can do as a parent is to give up some of your control over your children, and to empower them to make their own decisions and solve their own problems. and believe it or not, its the same with adults @ MHR.
case in point…the David Bruton thread that was on the front page this past week
http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/11/12/1143590/update-on-david-bruton
in which that thread/posting was lousy with a troll (which reflected poorly on MHR btw!), and from this list of names,
John Bena
Jeremy Bolander
Steve Nichols
Tim Lynch
Douglas A. Lee
Emmett Smith
Ted Bartlett
TJ Johnson
it sort of appears that you are the only one that has the mojo to make a post or those postings disappear. i might be wrong about this, but if i’m not…well…
thats just wrong on so many levels.
if your children have to run to you in order to put out fires, eventually what you teach your children is that
a) the garage might have to burn down in order for dad to learn anything about himself.
b) dad doesn’t want us to grow up, the house be damned. (aka dad likes his dad power)
c) teardrops put out fires.
at some point the training wheels have to come off, daddy oh.

Censorship on MHR. Last I checked were in america, you know freedom of speech. If you dont like whats being written then dont read it. Pretty simple.
by johnnyurrotten on Nov 16, 2009 6:15 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
freedom of speech ? on a site you don't pay for ?
sorry to laugh, but since you can’t hear me i guess no harm no foul. i’m in Canada, btw.
your constitution doesn’t cover me, although it would be nice !
i’m not proposing censorship at all, actually.
if you read my post, i’m proposing a simple mechanism that would allow you (the user) to make text gradually white on white, or invisible, simply by (democratically) voting. should the end user wish to, they could mouse over that portion of the comment section and still read the (voted invisible) offending text.
for example
http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/11/12/1143590/update-on-david-bruton
a thread about a player and his son, in which the player in question was called a bad name.
picture said player with son on lap reading said thread. makes a poor argument for freedom of speech !
as an end-user/member, it would have been nice to be empowered to make that whole mess not happen. so, a solution was offered. thats all.
or, alternatively, if a post was so offensive, then the community at large could collapse it (again, by a voting mechanism! wtf?! democracy ? in america?!), and the enduser would have to open said comment section to read the offensive portion.
or better yet, for example, if you found all posts by Jenna Talia to be annoying, perhaps with a quick toggle you could make all my posts collapse so that you never had to read them, even accidentally.
that’d be pretty cool i should think, as damn i can be annoying !
that way, you could occasionally check up on me, read what i have to say, be all, nope, still annoying/clueless, and go back and enjoy your day !
while it will probably make for a pretty lonely time for me @ MHR, it sounds pretty american to me.

hey boydy !
i didn’t mean to be hard on myself, and was just using myself to illustrate a point, although i can totally be annoying.
the thing is, i felt really helpless when i read the David Bruton thread this weekend and saw someone call the guy a name i wouldn’t have wanted his child to have to read. and thats the thing about community. you want to improve it. i wanted to do something and couldn’t and felt powerless and it sucked. my proposals have nothing to do with gameday threads, btw. but i want to rant a little !
i mean it sucked more than ORTON’S NOODLE ARM ! it sucked more than MORENO FUMBLING GD ! it sucked more than MCHOODIE JR & A SIMMS INT! yeesh that feels good sometimes whoooo !
thats all. so, back down to earth, i thought about some proactive solutions that would prevent that sort of thing, and hopefully none of them (proposed solutions) would stifle anything that actually was great conversation.
its more the ‘player A’ is a ‘_____________.’ that i’d like to see stifled.
hopefully this made some sense

A really great “filter”.
From what little I’ve seen across the SB nation sites, we have one of the most active NFL fan sites. With that many people and that much information, which does at times get repeated, a great big ’ol filter for me would be useful.

It's all about expectations
I expected the team, at the beginning of the season to be 8-8. We’re still well on pace for that or better. However, I expected that we would beat the Redskins. To have lost to that terrible team, coached by Jim “Frickin” Zorn in a game in which we gave up 4th and 20 for a TD, turns my stomach. I was so mad. And I think it is because I expected to win the game.
For the record, I think that we would have won the game with Orton behind center, that injury screwed us.
Anyways, I’m going to go into every game from now on expecting a loss and will be over joyed if they win. I believe it’s called managing expectations. :)

Nice therapeutic rant! All we need to do is figure out how to channel all of your intensity back into the defense and we’ll be back on track. My take: it’s the NFL. All kinds of crazy stuff happens (the Titans lost six straight, the Giants have lost four straight, etc.) and it’s a long season. Your prescription regarding “enjoy the game of football” is spot on. We don’t have to spend a minimum of seventeen weeks a year pulling “all-nighters” trying to come up with game plans, or hours on end in the training facility trying to duct tape our bodies together and wondering whether the pain will ever subside over the second half of the season. All we can do is cheer and try to transfer all the positive karma we can muster – and right now is when the team needs it like never before – at least for this season. Relax and enjoy! Go Broncs!

I guess the loss doesn't concern me as much as
how we’ve played the last 3 weeks. Like you, it usually takes about a day or two to get over a loss, then on to next week. Well this feeling I have today is too familiar, the feeling of impending mediocrity. There’s alot of time left in the season, but if we don’t fix it soon it will be another season of 8-8 or 9-7.

That my man was a wonderful post. I’m with you, if you spend money buying products of your team, jerseys, posters, tickets to the games then you have every right as a fan to vent, or praise your team respectfully.I love your passion ,I’m the exact same way win or lose. To many people questioning others FANDOM because of serving up a little criticism. Criticism by no way means you have any less love for your team. That was a horrible loss yesterday ,hopefully coach can get it fixed. I know I cant stand to see Phylissss beat us, more so that anyone else. You know he’ll be bringing it this week .

We all know that this is a 16 round title fight.
We came out in the 9th rd yesterday with a flurry uppercuts and haymakers that staggered and bloodied our opponent temporarily. We got our foot stepped on and then we changed our tactic which proved to be a mistake. We eventually lost the rd but we haven’t lost the fight. The judges have us 6 rds to 3 so far and it is a long way to the ending bell. Our team will sit in the corner while the cut man stops the blood and our manager will give us some great advice on how we will win the next rd. It’s a long fight fans.

Great Post and you deserve a place to be critical!
However, I wanted to make a point and my point is as follows.
I am embarrased about the negative things I say and how brash I am about my players and coaches in the heat of the moment during a game. I look over at my wife and her expression says, “you’re crazy for starters and why are you screaming for that player to pull his head out of his butt when four plays ago you were saying how much you loved him?” I tend to just look away at that point…, but I have NEVER let that emotion lead me to post something here, you my brethren are already hurting with me, and don’t need me to remind you of the bad play, call or whaterever….
My point is that the in-game thread should be scraped, it’s creating division amongst a great group of fans and if someone wants to express their emotion during the game let them do it somewhere else.!

Boydy my mate
Surely your Manly Sea Eagles fandom from the 90’s allows you to deal with disappointment… :)
I feel your frustration brother, I would be Ok competing hard and losing to the elites of the NFL if we consistantly beat the teams we should beat or at least didn’t play down to them.
I just want good quality consistant effort and product from my players & my coaches and if thats there i can feel ok after a loss.
But losing to the 2009 Redskins!! geez its like getting bowled out at backyard cricket by your misses!

YES IT DOES SCOTTO....
For our American audience….losing to the Redskins is like being struck out in baseball by your 6 year old niece….not so cool!

And this is worse than the Sea Eagles..
At least they blew out the rabbitohs and penrith consistently!

I feel ya my friend!
I dislike the calling out of each other too. We don’t need to divide a fan base that is still trying to recover from losing a “FRANCHISE” QB and a Mastermind HC. Lol.

Boydy great post my friend
I am curious about something? Some of the guys who were asking for Simms last week and defending him today because he didn’t get enough reps to play well yesterday made me wonder………………………….how many reps did the kicker Hunter Smith from the Redskins get this week, cause his one pass for 43 yards looked better than all of Chris Simms’ passes looked?
I do not want to get down on Simms either because he is a Bronco and i am a Bronco fan, but we need to be real.

DM....Simms was putrid, and for McD to make excuses for him makes it worse...
He has played QB all his life and could not even hit on screens. If KO cant play, and he plays Simms we are up Crap Creek without a paddle.
PLEASE get Tom B ready…..but in no way Simms!

Boydy my friend
Simms was not good, but he has been good in the past.
I trust Orton cause McDaniels picked him and is working with him.
I feel the same way about Simms.
Yes he was not good but lets suppose Orton can’t play this week and McDaniels ripped him today.
You think it would help Simms confidence on Sunday?
Don’t you think McDaniels will be more frank to Simms in the QB meetings? Simms has a great pedigree and a decent arm, i am sure he is dejected about his performance yesterday.
What I love about McDaniels the most is he keeps most problems in house.
It is not for the public to hear what they talk about in meetings and least of all the MSM.
There is a time to determine who plays and coaches for the Broncos.
A press conference is NOT the place to rip, critique or ridicule your coaches or players.
This is a critical time in the season with a big obstacle in the way.
McDaniels needs to unite everyone and restore the passion and the goal.
Being overly critical in public would send a reeling team off even further IMHO. ;-)

Agreed, Boydy! Rec'd.
I guess my biggest disgust is with un-preparedness: ST was taken by surprise by the fake FG. Even the tip-off didn’t faze them. Wow! Sorry to pile on Simms – but it is his job to be prepared should Orton go down – even for one play. He may not be the starter but his game intensity should be close to a starter. I realize that it takes reps to be in sync in a timing offense. However, I think he should have not needed an entire half.
We let the Skins get into a rhythm and then their momentum took over. The hold on Royal on that potential TD pass – had that not happened and Eddie snare the ball for a TD – that might have nailed it for us.
Thanks, Boydy. Peace.

This was not the worst loss in recent history
LOSING TO THE REDSKINS YESTERDAY IS THE MOST UNACCEPTABLE LOSS (IN MY MIND) THAT I HAVE SEEN THIS TEAM SUFFER!
The Chuckfest in Chicago (Brother Hester, wherefore art thou?) or the Disaster in Detroit (Shaun “Rabbit” Rogers dashed like Devon) or the Horror show in Houston (Ron Dayne shredded a Denver D that didn’t know how to play against a Zone Blocking offense?).
Sorry to bring up such forgettable games, but my memory hasn’t completely purged these putrid performances. Thanks for putting up with my rant.
I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

Excellent post, Boydy. Rec'd.
I was going to do a post like this, but I will just comment on yours and leave a link to my blog if you are anyone wants to read it. I hope it is okay if I post a link to this on my blog becasue I couldn’t agree more. The loss enraged me, especially the gadget play, the Simms interception, and the sucky run defense.
Maybe some of the critics will lay off of Kyle Orton a bit because of Sims’s awful performance.
