The good, the bad and the OH SO UGLY

Yesterday started bad.  My local affiliate had 'technical' troubles and no Broncos for most of the first quarter.  Should have taken the hint and gone on to other things.

The good ... we are starting to see the play book opened up with a little bit more of a down feild threat.  I think all the dink and dunk made the Skins secondary too egar to come up which helped create the open recievers down field.  Moreno looked good as did Buck if he would have just gone down on the fumble play.  Orton and Co have been so deadly with the short and intermediate stuff that the safeties have to be in position to help out .   After yesterdays exhibition (one we have a QB back on the feid) the decoy effect of a deep route will open the shorter stuff or give us 6.

The Bad ... the non offense/defense teams.  No way you can call them special.  Time for someone to be looking for a new job.  I trust in the bodies we have out there, but they need some direction.  I am very disappointed.  McD showed all the signs that he was putting a high priority on special teams in the draft and FA pick ups - if that is what a high priority gets us then we are in big trouble.

The OH SO UGLY ....  the singular cause of the loss yesterday .... without this one error the game was absolutely win able.  McD screwed up royal.  How on earth can you feild a team without a back up quarterback that is prepared to step in and run the offense if called upon.  A large part of the Bigolcheck philosophy is that no player is immune form injury - thus you don't pay superstars you trade them - and you build depth.  Chris Simms has an arm, he is a smart quarterback, he has been a winner in this leauge.  Through most of preseason he was supposedly competing for the starting role.  How on earth is it that in week 10 he is not prepared to come on to the feild and run an effective offense against a not so good team?  This one fall directly on McD ...

Not too concerned with the defense.  Yes, they have played better but they only gave up 20 points.  Our offense should have scored twice that.  Once Simms came out we had virtually no time of possession.  The Defense was on the feild against a very physical Offensive line for almost the entire first half.  Somewhat akin to allowing the Skins 6 quarters to the Broncos 2.

While I agree with you for the most part, I can’t dole out all the blame to McD for Simms’ performance. The starter is going to get most of the reps with the first team, the backup will never be as prepared as the starter to play effectively, IMO. Along with that, Simms hadn’t played meaningful football in several years, it takes a little while to shake the rust off. I’m sure McD had Simms ready to roll, or as much as he could given the circumstances, but it was up to Simms to execute.

My favorite things about the game: The deep passes, I hope this is a sign we will continue moving in that direction. Knowshon looked very good to me yesterday, and the best I’ve seen him. I think the game is finally slowing down for him a bit where he is picking his spots and not just running full steam ahead every play, I expect to see some big-gains and dynamic running from him very soon.

You said "McD screwed up royal." I was thoroughly confused and had to go back through and pick up the real concept.

I was wondering if McD punched Eddie in the face or talked serious smack or something like that.

Scared me for a little bit………

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Yesterdays opening drive was the best one of the season so far.

Buckhalter being a “Veteran” RB knows when contact is eminent the ball has to be wrapped up tight, no if’s and or fumbles about it. These little mistakes have allowed teams to gain momentum they shouldn’t of had. These players are playing way tooo high on emotional wisdom and should start playing with common football sense.

I'm confused how Chris Sims' failings are on McD

To my eyes, he was jittery, off-target, and ill at ease. To be expected for his first major action in 2-3 years. That by no means indicates that he is a bad QB, or that signing him in the offseason was a stupid move. What it means is that he now needs to calm down and do what he is capable of doing (see him before his spleen injury).

If I were to put a parcel of blame on McD (and I’m strongly tempted to), it would be his playcalling once Simms got in. We had the lead, Simm’s struggles were obviously to be expected given the above circumstances, and Knowshon was running very well. Why not do what WAS did to us and pound the rock continuously, wearing down the defense while giving ours a chance to rest?

This concerns me; Simms does not.

Can't put the blame squarely on McD's shoulders.

I would have done much more running though since it was working in the first half. It all just didn’t work out as planned and it was too bad because we had the game in hand.

This is the first year of a rebuilding

Key things will be missing, especially depth (and maybe an OL to pound out McD’s version of a running game). The Broncos had fallen to a fairly low talent point last year – that was a key part of the final collapse. No GM/coach can catch that up in one offseason. Simms is probably there due to a lack of other options. I would expect to see that sort of thing change as the roster gets stronger.

liked your post, but I have to respectfully disagree on one point:
Not too concerned with the defense.

I’m very concerned about our defense. And I’m not talking about our 2nd half performance. I’m talking about our first half performance. Denver held the ball for 15:46 in the 1st half, compared to 14:14 for Washington. Here’s what happened in those 14+ minutes:

Drive 1 (after we’d scored a TD) 12 plays, 78 yards, 6:15, 3rd downs converted (the last being a TD, 6 plays of 5+ yards, of those 3 plays were 10+, and 2 plays went for 17 and 24 yards.

Drive 2 Washington punts after Campbell misses a wide open Santana Moss on third down. A completion would have netted a first down.

Drive 3 We give up a 26 yard play on 3rd & 4. On the 2nd 3rd down of the drive, Campbell misses a wide open Davis, another pass that would have been a first down.

Drive 4We actually stopped them for once.

Drive 5 They picked up 2 10+ yard plays, were hindered by an Intentional Grounding call, that forced a Field Goal attempt. Washington called a timeout after showing a shift to a fake field goal attempt. They then came out of the timeout, promptly made exactly the same shift, and nobody bothered to cover the one guy who split out to the left side. At that point they were at 4th and 20, did anyone honestly think they were going to run it to the loaded right side?

While the offense needs to be called to task for leaving the defense on the field so much in the 2nd half of the last 3 games, I tend to believe that the issues are much broader than that.
