Legwold does a very good job of explaining why Peyton Hillis hasn't been playing. But then he uses the J.J. Arrington signing as an example of a dangerous preference for veterans that results in salary cap hits when they get injured (no joking). It cost the Broncos $100,000 versus the cap. That's virtually nothing and certainly not notable. Let's also consider that Arrington is only 26 years old. Legwold also knocks McXanders using (for example) a higher pick than necessary for a player they like in the draft. Frankly, I want the front office to choose players they like and think fit the team, not just gather for value's sake...

I should have been Kiz for Halloween
I could have gone around saying whatever bit of nonsense came to my mind. All night long, nothing but nonsense. Hey, you can’t get mad at me, I’m just Kiz! Very liberating, I’ll bet.
Boo Kiz!
Why are newspapers failing? Ask Kiz.
I stopped reading after the 3rd paragraph. He gets paid to write that stuff and have those thoughts.
Based on articles like this, Kiz would be lucky to score the role of janitor at MHR.
This is my favorite website.
Its funny the DP sportswriters
kind of mock MHR because of our punctuation and typos but the simple truth is we have so much more depth here than they offer. They go head hunting hoping for some sort of controversy. Here we try to talk football, schemes and trends. We all get in moods here but that is all they are temporary moods.
There is no way that football is covered at DP with any of the class and professionalism it is covered at MHR!
That why I ove having you here McGeorge, whether we agree with each other or not, you always make me think!

My guess at brainstorming over at the DP
I was watching South Park the other day and the episode was about the boys becoming TV reporters. During this episode, the boys spend a lot of time in a board room trying to brainstorm ideas for their next show.
This got me thinking about what a brainstorming session at the DP looked like when the sports writers are trying to come up with ideas for Bronco related articles. I’ll assume Woody is the alpha male and Kiz is the favored son.
Jim Armstrong: “How this, I do a piece about how the Broncos have not been the same since they wore the throwback jersey’s and connect this to my theory that the throw back jersey’s were the reason why Denver was winning”
Woody Paige: “Jim, you idiot, I wrote that article two weeks ago. Don’t you read the paper! NEXT”.
Mike Klis, "I was thinking about the Brandon Marshall fumble last season vs Buffalo and how it relates to the release of Brent Kern. So I put one and one together and my thesis is that both these factors played a critical role in the demise of the Bronco run D over the last three games. What do you think?"
Lindsey Jones: "Mike, that was my idea and you stole it".
Woody: "Shut up Jones. You still have a lot to learn from a vet like Klis. Pay your dues".
Woody: "Anyway, Interesting Mike very very interesting. But I need Jones to do more research, connect a few more dots before I’m ready to green light this hard hitting story. You’re on to something though Klis and I like where you are going."
Mark Kizsla, "Guys… I’ve got it… Listen guys…. How does this sound for a headline… “Kyle Orton’s Last Chance”
Woody: "Whoa… I love IT.. Give me more Kiz, come on".
Kiz: "I want to write a headline grabber about my belief that if Orton doesn’t play on a legitimately injured ankle/knee 7 days after that injury, his Bronco career and probably his NFL career is finished. What is my logic behind this article? …… Look at the monkey, look at that silly monkey"
Woody: “Kiz, I’m giving you 3,000 words and the front page of the Paper, you have hit the mother-load with this idea”.
Woody to the rest: "If you want to move up in this business, you need to think outside the box like Kiz, you need to grab the reader by the throat and scream the facts directly into his face!"
Woody does a long pause for dramatic effect.
Woody: "Okay, that is it for today guys. See you tomorrow at the same time. And Jim, bring your thinking cap this time you idiot".
This is my favorite website.

Kiz
Is suggesting that Orton could have played but sat out because he’s either soft or a malingerer. Further, if he doesn’t MAN UP and play Sunday, he’s through in Denver. The big faker baby softy.
Ugh. The article borders on libel.
Hooky, Kiz? Seriously?
He played and won with a dislocated index finger the first four games…he was already having a great game against Washington, so why on earth (other than a real injury), would he choose to just sit out the second half? Are you brain-damaged?

You know how I once proposed that one guy, the dude who played Mike last year, shouldn’t be mentioned at MHR? If only for all of our sanity? Maybe the same should go for Kiz.
The truly disgusting thing to me is that I used to be a journalist, and proud of the fact. And now my response to the pending death of newspapers is indifference. What Kiz does to football, supposedly serious writers do to coverage about sanitation, education, the workplace, healthcare — any issue that matters. Over on Ted’s post, he got some blowback for using political examples to illustrate issues with sports coverage. It’s impossible to avoid. The paid professionals are all fatuous in precisely the same way. It’s so depressing.
Pasquarelli’s story from yesterday was a real peach, too. Really, the Broncos’ problem in that game was the lack of a deep ball? Are you sure about that? Pardon me, because I have to ask — but did Chris Simms maybe stink? Do you think that could find its way into your story?
I’ve been lazy in the thank you department lazy. As always, you’ve managed to speed up my workday. Much thanks.
Thanks, CB
You know, whether to post “articles” by folks like Pasquarelli is a constant internal battle for me; between trying to make Tracks objective and all-consuming, and weeding out people I consider (personally) to be hacks. Pasquarelli is so obviously a mouthpiece for player agents and their agendas, that it’s probably against better judgment to subject y’all to his drivel…
Kiszla’s column today is very disappointing to me. I didn’t write above what I truly felt, because I was so taken aback that I figured I misread the whole thing in the first place. How in the world could he make such awful assertions? Orton kept himself out of the game to do what, protect his own ability to procure a contract for next year? Or that if he doesn’t play on Sunday he’s doing the same? I don’t even know what to say…

Should Orton play this week?
I keep wondering about this. As a Marine, I used to sprain/roll my ankle constantly, 4 years straight. Not participating in PT for that reason is usually considered a copout. So I had to be there. It is not pleasant to run for three miles on an ankle that feels supported by jelly. Football is not as constant, (IE stopping to huddle, reset) but I would say puts as much if not more pressure on ankles, because the game is played side to side alot. Orton has a history of sprains and rolls with his ankle as well.
But it’s a huge game for us. Huge. None of us can deny it. Can the running game and Simms keep us in the game? Our D played OK against San Diego, but not spectacular.
Could/should McD, the team, expect him to step up?
Should we be careful, and keep the guy healthy so we can get an accurate gauge of how good he is/can be?
"One time, I want to see a fork lift lift a crate full of forks. It would be so littteral..."
RIP Mitch H.
I think the main issue
is the fact that if he is hobbling around in the pocket, is he going to be able to move well enough to keep from getting injured again? From Kyle’s standpoint, I believe he is a baller and the pain isn’t going to be anything that keeps him from playing. I think it will be a coaching decision based on whether he can keep himself from getting further hurt, while also keeping an eye on whether it is hurting his mechanics. I believe it is his left ankle though, so that impact should be minimal (AFAIK).

From my point of view, I think he could do it. He would need a sweet brace, though.
I used to play goalkeeper in soccer and had a history of injures. I said “injuries” because the list would include countless parts of my body.
One injury that I can say I’ve had a lot of experience with is ankle injuries. The injury suffered by Kyle Orton is one of the nastiest looking ankle injuries I’ve seen. In my experience, unless the ankle is sprained severely, a high quality brace can usually make it workable.
It’s a much easier injury for a QB to deal with than a WR or RB because KO doesn’t really have to run. Like you said, as a Marine, an ankle injury wouldn’t be a good thing because of all the running. Hopefully our offensive line will make it so that KO won’t have to run for his life. Kyle will have to slide around in the pocket to buy a little bit of time every once in a while, but I think that he would be able to do that with a good brace. One of my favorite braces was the McDavid Ankle X. It was more expensive than some of the other braces I had, but it worked really well.
I have no doubt that the training staff will do whatever it takes to get KO on the field and I don’t think KO should be affected too much.
Like poorboywilly said, we don’t want him to injure it even more. Well, the Ankle X brace only allows the foot to bend up and down. The ankle cannot move side to side and that should prevent making KO’s injury worse than it already is. You can still run to escape the pocket with a brace restricting side to side movement, but it feels wierd and slows you down a bit. The key will be to give him good protection and pick up the blitz.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
by Troy Hufford on Nov 17, 2009 12:56 PM MST up reply actions
Sorry if someone already made this point...
…but we all know how important a QB’s base is, and the ankle on the front foot is actually a very crucial part of this throwing motion as he turns his hips and basically turns on his front foot ankle. Kyle is a tough SOB, and I have no doubt he plays, but I wonder how much the ankle injury (if I remember right and it’s his left ankle) will affect his throwing mechanics…
Mike Klis whiffed on this one, too
Running back J.J. Arrington, for example, came for his visit in March on crutches and never played a down for the Broncos despite having signed a deal. So although he’s not on the roster, he’s still counts against the salary cap.
Well, sure, kind of. His $100,000.00 signing bonus counts against the cap, which is pennies in the NFL. If he’d gotten well, we’d have an excellent returner and a decent 3rd string RB at good money. Instead, we lost almost nothing (in real terms). McD even mentioned that ‘In the future’ we might be bringing him back if he gets healthy.
Accuracy counts.

Orton should not play this Sunday
If I was Orton agent I would advise him to screw the Broncos to sit out until he is 100 %. Why ? Orton is a team player, last year Ortonshould have been out for 6 weeks yet he came back after missing only 1 week because his team needs him. If not for 3 monumental collapsed by the Bears defesne last year during the Carolina, TB and Atlanta Orton would have been 12-4 as it was he was 9-6 even with only one ankle. So what happen after Orton sacrifice for his team, he was thrown under the bus by the fans and the GM of the Bears, he was blamed for not getting the Bears into the playoff and traded. Orton was boo at practice by the Broncos fans and people even now continued to call him a game manager, noodle arm etc…
Look at the Bears this year, with a slightly improved OL, a much improved group of receivers and a much improved defense (the Bears defense ranked 12th this year, last year they ranked at 21st) and what have Cutler done with a better supporting group ? Orton have proven he can win even with a crappy team yet he wa streated like crap by the stupid Broncos fans. Let Simms play this Sunday, after all Simms is paid 3 times the salary Orton is currently making, let Simms earn his pay.
They aren't going to make Orton play.
Sure, everyone would love for him to play, but if he can’t go, it’s up to him. In the Washington game, he was throwing on the sidelines and told McD that he couldn’t play the second half. That’s when they went with Simms.
It’s up to Orton. If he doesn’t think he can play, he won’t. However, if he feels he can play and the doctors and McDaniels clear him to play, he will.
At the same time, I feel that you play your best players. Although Simms is earning more than Orton, I don’t feel he is a better QB for this team and therefore I would rather have Orton play.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
by Troy Hufford on Nov 17, 2009 8:00 PM MST up reply actions
Simms was paid well for his skills so unless Orton is not 100% he should not play. Also, didn’t some people demand that Simms should start in Washington because he looks beter than Orton in trainning camp ? Again, I have seen the reaction of the Broncos fans and I question why any athletes would want to play for a fan base that is so ignorant and ungrateful as this fan base.
So, you are saying that Simms is better than Orton because he is paid more?
McD puts the best players on the field, not the highest paid. If that was the case, Brandon Marshall wouldn’t get a lot of playing time. He isn’t the highest paid receiver on the team, yet he is labeled the #1 receiver.
Yes, some people did demand that Simms should start over Orton because of some of the preseason games. However, McDaniels saw the guys, day in and day out, and decided that Orton was the better QB.
So, although they signed contracts in the offseason, it doesn’t mean that the highest paid QB will play. At the time, they were projected to perform at a certain level. Simms isn’t playing up to that level and Orton is playing at a higher level than he was projected to. That, in turn, means that Orton is going to start over Simms.
So, why are you saying that broncos fans are ignorant and ungrateful? Are you saying that the members of MHR are ignorant and ungrateful, as well, because we are broncos fans?? By the transient property, MHR members and broncos fans are both ignorant, according to you. Right???
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming that all the idiocy you see posted at the DP is reflective of the entire fan base- it isn’t. That’s a ridiculous over-generalization, and an especially silly charge to make at MHR.
There are knuckleheads and fools in ANY group, and moreover, in EVERY fanbase in the NFL and Denver’s no exception. However, those people do not represent the majority.
MHR represents the best of the Bronco fan base, in my opinion, while the DP is the exact opposite.
