2 games in 4 days. It’s gonna be crazy.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Bowe getting suspended in KC… I love that. Just another step back for a franchise that has won something like 5 of their last 30 games.

Denver won’t have to face Bowe when we play them in KC in a few weeks.

Of course Washington was missing 1/3 of their roster to injuries and we still found a way to lose that one. Even KC creamed Washington (in DC no less).

Not sure who is more of a dead coach walking: Mangenius, Zorn or Priefer. The successful fake FG was ultra painful as a fan, but I can’t think of anything worse than seeing your best player leave the field on a stretcher because of a gimmick play that was run with two seconds on the clock and your down 16 points. I hope Priefer is fired, but Mangenius deserves a brick to the face from Cribbs.

Virtually no national analysts I've heard

actually watched the Bronco game on Sunday. How do I know? They keep saying things like “maybe Orton is a pedestrian as we all thought he was — losing to a terrible Redskin team.”

Ironic.

In defense of Krieger and and whoever else is being paid for a living to doodle their Peter King-like musings, it can be awfully hard to have 1,000 interesting words to say every day.

And the big plus for Krieger, compared to those other two columnists, is I generally know what his point is. The point is usually inane, but at least it’s coherent on its own terms.

Haven't offered a word of appreciation in a while

Doug, I read your post each time, and thought it was time I pop in and once again tell you how greatly appreciated your efforts are.

Thanks for all the time you put into this and the great links.

Bettis' comments on Orton

made me angry enough to try to find a way to contact him about it. Instead I dropped his colleague Jim Trotter a line on twitter to get his thoughts at least. Again, what bothers me is not someone criticizing the Broncos about something, it’s them doing it from a POV of lazy ignorance. He clearly didn’t even watch that game. Orton was terrific against the Redskins and then got hurt. But I guess bashing Simms would’ve been less interesting. ;-)

There is an update on pro-bowlers

At the DB blog. It says Dawkins is second at safety behind Polamalu, Doom is second behind James Harrison, Royal the third KR, and as a nice punch in the groin Clady is the fifth tackle behind Long, Light, Starks and Diem. In case you didn’t know, those tackles are from Miami, (and not surprisingly) NWE, Pitt, and Indy. People are idiots.

Also coming in fifth are DJ at ILB and Prater at kicker. So currently, Doom is in line as well, but I don’t think they take more than two safeties so I don’t know about Dawkins.

Interesting piece from the NYT

Has anyone worked out or found the differences between the QB rating system that this article used and the standard? I’ve missed this one.

Moreno/Buckhalter in '09

by Doc Bear on Nov 18, 2009 1:06 PM MST reply actions

Ranking?

Yes it is interesting. I haven’t seen this rating either. The “Passer Rating: Week 10” shows two sides from the Washington game. Orton is ranking 1st and Simms is dead last.

Here’s to hoping Orton heals and plays or Simms gets his reps in practice and performs much better.

Apparently

He outlines the rating here. Basically, He takes Y/A (adjusted for sacks) to be the biggest factor, while adjusting it with the opponents’ average Y/A conceded (clamped to the range [5.2, 7.2]), then factors INT percentage, then TD percentage as the weakest factor. He believes the traditional rating’s emphasis on accuracy rewards the “dink and dunkers”.

I disagree here, firstly I still don’t understand why “dink and dunk” is considered undesirable a priori by so many “football minds”. Secondly, I think the biggest things a successful QB does are score and protect the ball. I also think some weight has to be given to “flipping the field”. If a drive is unsuccessful at scoring, it should at least hurt your opponent’s field position.

Example: QB A starts at his 20 yard line, tosses a 40 yard pass, the team stalls out running the ball the next three downs and no points are scored, but field position is flipped. The next two drives, however, are three-and-outs, say with two incomplete passes each.
QB B starts at his own 20 yard line, “dinks and dunks” his way to the opponent’s 40 yard line, where the drive promptly stalls, say that of the 40 yards gained on this drive he passed for 20 with 5 attempts. On the next two drives, he performs much the same, dinking and dunking for 20 more yards on 5 more attempts.

QB A has 40 yards on 5 attempts. A tremendous 8 Y/A!! QB B has 60 yards on 15 attempts, an abysmal dink-and-dunk 4 Y/A. However, in the scenario QB A completed 20% of his passes and only flipped the field on one drive. QB B helped flip the field on two of his drives with a far better completion percentage. Since neither QB scored or turned the ball over, I have to say QB B performed better because he gave the opponent worse field position more often.

I guess what all this blather is getting at is that I don’t think Y/A is the most effective way of measuring QB success. I do have to admit that using mostly scoring and turnovers would make a rating that is pretty useless for game-by-game evaluation, it would have to be used in at least several game runs.

The fact that he adjusts the rating somewhat to the opponent is interesting, and it appeals to our desire for “fairness”, if the opponent only played one game against a QB that went absolutely ape (or the opposite in Derek Anderson), this skews the rating in undesirable ways.

by poorboywilly on Nov 18, 2009 2:21 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

Keep in mind that you’re merely presenting a very specific exception to this new rating. One could devise any scenario where any one stat or rating wouldn’t “make sense”. Plus, you’re talking about a tiny sample (a few possessions). What are the chances that these scenarios keep repeating over and over again for QBs A and B?

Yards per attempt, and more specifically, adjusted net yards per attempt, has a higher correlation to winning than any other passing stat around.

When it comes down to it, if you generate more yards and points per throw than the next guy, you’re the better QB.
