Poll of the Week - Who is the Broncos Biggest Rival
This topic recently came up and I thought I would ask it of the greatest Broncos fans in the world - so guys and gals of Broncos Country - which is the biggest rivalry the Broncos face?? We all know the Raiders are the historic rival, but their lack of success may have dampened that. The Chiefs and Broncos battled for AFC West supremacy in the 90's and early in this decade but they too are now struggling. The Broncos and Chargers are battling it out nowadays, and it appeared Philip Rivers and Jay Cutler were going to have their own personal rivalry going until the events of the off-season.
Please explain your answer in the comments. Call it a little "market research"!
So, I ask all of you -

The Dolts
Over the last 5 years it’ evident who the top 2 teams in the AFC WEST are. And I say that with tongue in cheek because the Dolts have dominated and on occasion even embarrassed us over the last 2 seasons

Depends on the Question
Histoically, the Raiders.
More recent history, the Chiefs
Last few years, the Chargers.

That’s what makes it fun. In your opinion, who is the Broncos biggest rival?

What, are you Bill Clinton?
What do you mean, it depends on the question? The question is pretty straight forward: Who IS the Broncos biggest rival. In case you are Bill Clinton, and the answer to the question depends on what the definition of is is, is means currently. :-)

The Sparklers
The way they’ve embarrassed us in the last few years make them currently our biggest rival… It’s like they got the Broncos making out with their cousin, THAT embarrassed

I voted San Diego but...
The Raiders will always hold the “traditional” rivalry spot…
Never have considered KC as huge
But, for me, I think that SD has taken over the top spot and will likely be there for some time

I second that
For me the relationship with the raiders is a love/hate relationship. I secretly wish for them to do all right. I too felle sorry for them right now.
With the chargers it is just “hate”. I can’t see, why LT is allways called a class act, when clearly he is not (He might have been eight years ago). Why is Merrimann still hailed as one of the best, when he has only been so-so, since he has been off the juice? I hate them so much.

Seems to be a generational thing...
For those of us who are a bit more “seasoned” (fan since ‘67) it will always be the Raiders. We just don’t have the history with SD for it to be a true rivalry.
by NorCoBronco on Nov 19, 2009 7:46 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I think it is a generational thing
I never felt like the raiders were the big rivalry. A rival has to be someone that challenges you, and IMO that has not been the raiders over the last 15 years (about how long I have been watching the Broncos). I have not seen any improvement out of them for a while, and don’t expect much from them going forward.
The Chiefs were tough in the 90s, but there is not really anything that I hate about them.
SD on the other hand is full of me first, extremely talented, underachievers. They kind of give me the vibe of the school bully. I absolutely hate Rivers, but I will admit he is a good QB. SD has been good and cocky of late, and the younger generations tend to forget things that didn’t recently happen. It is all about now. Even if Denver were 2-8, I would still passionately rute against SD, when I wouldn’t really care about Oak and KC.

Very true statement.
The Raiders really didn’t become a bitter rival until we took the AFC West crown from them in 1977 . But right now in this time I’ve got to say SD is the biggest rival.

Without a doubt the Raiders...
While the Dolts are recently dominating the West, they still have never really done anything. They have replaced the Damn Dirty Raiders as the relevant team for us the last 5-10 years, but have basically been irrelevant for the previous 30. I put them on the same level as Seattle for much of the 90s before the reallignment. More of a “who cares?”
The Raider games, however, have always been heated for as long as I can remember.

There of course are the traditional rivals
in both KC and Oakland. It would probably be more accurate to say the Broncos are rivals with all three of their AFC West opponents. My belief at the moment is the biggest rival right now is San Diego. Winning has a lot to do with that. SD is the target for winning the division, because they have been winning the last several years and taking something we believe belongs to the Broncos; the AFC West crown.
What do the players say about this question? That would provide an even better look.

The Raiders
Will always be the biggest rivalry to me. Raiders games are my favorite two weeks of the year. Well here lately it has been. The Raiders fans are so much more passionate then fans of the other two. Lets face it they are insane. Fans make a rivalry and I cant think of one that has fans that hate each more than us and them. If you had to choose who to sit next to on a plane… Raiders fan, Cheifs fan, or Chargers fan? The Raiders fan would always be last on my list…

I voted Chargers
There was no context provide for timeline, so I took it to mean right now, at this moment who do I consider our biggest rival. Oakland is just pathetic and KC is, as Boydy said, non descript. So I had to go with the Chargers who have a made a habit of whipping us recently, so the rivaly with them is full, especially with the way we took care of them in SD. I have a terrible feeling that they are going to reciprocate in kind this Sunday.

Arrowhead Pride put up a link to this, so I moseyed on over to check this out. Good to see we’re not in your guys’ cross hairs. lol.
I didn’t vote, but I think I’d vote SD if I did, due to your guys’ recent history.
It’s interesting, because I get the sense that if AP did a poll for our rival, it would go Raiders with about 90%, DEN with 6% and SD with 4%.

Haven't most fights in Chiefs games
been in games with Raiders? Historically there seems to have been really bad blood there, I remember quite a few skirmishes. Not that there haven’t been in Broncos-Raiders, or other AFC West games, but that stands out. So I’d vote Raiders, too, if I were a Chiefs fan…

Yeah, it goes a ways back.
Our hall of fame qb, and super bowl IV mvp Len Dawson is heavily involved in KC sports radio, as the color commentator for the local game broadcasts and occasional guset on various sports talk shows. It’s always fun for him to relive the glory days of the rivalry.
If I remember right the NFL Network did a “Top 10 show” on NFL rivalries. I’m pretty sure that Oakland vs. The World was 2nd, with specific mention to the bad blood between OAK vs. DEN and KC. I’ll have to see if I can find the link to the vid. It’s funny shit. The bad blood does go way, way back. But Schottenheimer made a big deal out of it during his tenure here. He coined the term “Raider Week” because he used to put posters up around Arrowhead challenging the Chiefs to hate the Raiders with enough passion to win every time. Marty was definitely known for his hatred of the Raiders, and did a lot to make that rivalry grow within the Chiefs and their fans. To this day Raider week has a specific ring to it that “Bronco week” or “Charger week” couldn’t come close to matching.

to see this question posted on all the AFC West teams boards? I’m curious who would win out on the Raiders and Chargers boards. I suspect the Chargers would be the Broncos (that Hochuli call still seems to enrage fans down there), but am not sure about the Raiders. Can you really blame them though?
If my Chiefs had continued to perform through the 90’s the way they did in the 80’s…. I don’t know that I ever would have grown up to root for the Red & Gold. And I probably wouldn’t have taken a big interest in football in general. As it is, I grew up watching Derrick Thomas & company compete for a title almost every year. It’s because I was raised a Chief that I continue to support them, even through these tough times.
The Chargers are breeding that generation now. They’re putting up a team that has competed for 4 straight years. It’s understandable that they’re coming out of the wood work now. And if the SD fans are anything like KC fans, a decade of strong play can create life long, die hard fans.

It's funny how you see all kinds of Chargers jerseys around here with the names of players...
from the past few years. Rivers, LT, Merriman, Sproles, etc. But i can’t remember the last time I saw a Fouts, Winslow, O’Neal, or even a Seau jersey being worn here in San Diego. It’s like the team didn’t even exist prior to 2005. I’m not kidding.

Mostly because they didn't.
Prior to Schottenheimer stabbing us in the back and going to coach SD, they were just fodder for the rest of the West. The 90’s and early 2000’s were dominated by Denver and KC, with Oakland slipping in a few good seasons here and there. SD was just awful.

It wasn’t like it ended the game. You still failed to stop us from scoring after that. You failed to stop the two point conversion. Everyone admitted it was a bad call. Hochuli apologized for it. Rival (from Mirriam-Webster)
one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess b : one striving for competitive advantage
The last half-decade, the sole legitimate rival to the AFC West has been the Chargers. They are currently our biggest rival, no question. The Chiefs need to find out who they are again before they can be called a rival. The Raiders are a great historical rival (especially fun with the added hate between Al and Shanny the last decade), but they are more pathetic than competative. Still, nothing like Raiders week.
My personal favorite sports rivalry (of recent history anyway) is still the Avs-Wings of the turn of the century. The players hated each other. the fans hated each other. Both teams were the tops with future HOF players on both sides, fantastic coaches, and bitter competition. That rivalry is dead. Avs faithful still hate the wings, but until we can prove competative again (which it looks like we are at least turning it around – yay!), then it can’t be considered a real rivalry. Same with the Raiders. When/if they ever get back to being good-to-great, they will beat out SD for the top rivalry spot.

Without question… Very little compares to the satisfaction of destroying the raiders (even if they are 0-16 caliber).
It may not be the dictionary definition, but my take on rivalry is “if we could only win two games all season, who would they be against?” The chargers are punks, but I’d still rather sweep the raiders…

I voted Chargers.
From a purely competitive standpoint, it’s Phyllis and his Merrimen all the way.
Also, I think Bronco fans dislike the Chargers because win or lose, in good times or in bad, there are many San Diego players who don’t conduct themselves on or off the field that, let’s say, “professionally”. Shaun Phillips, Rivers, etc. And it’s too bad because I respect Phillip Rivers talent and on the field abilities quite a bit. It’s too bad he’s an immature punk.

I have to say that I stick to my roots. Faiders!!!
I chose raiders….not because they are a threat nowdays, but because I don’t think I could ever hate another team more. If you meant rivals purely in the competetive sense…then clearly my answer would be different….but if you mean in the overall, universe encompassing sense….I’ll pick Jokeland all day.
There was just so much hatred between these teams that even people who have never been involved in the rivalry, like HCMcD felt the aura of it.
I don’t know how, in terms of all time biggest rivals, any team or fan could ever put another team UNDER the Fahduz!!!!
I say under because over is too posotive.
I’m sure people disagree, and I pruposfully did not read any posts before putting this up so I would not be biased. But Jokeland all day son. Gotta be the Raiders!
As much as I don’t like Rivers and smirk every time SD hires coaches like Marty and Norv, I was raised to be a raider hater. The OAK/DEN games are always heated. I don’t care if they have that fat guy throwing the ball or Gradkowwkeskadi or whoever under center, I love to beat them. Plus no matter their record, seems like they always manage to beat us once a year. ugh!

I had to vote San Diego
The fact is they are well run and right now look like the only team that we need to actually overcome in the AFC West.
But historically it has to be the Raiders. For a VERY long time I always wanted to be at the Raiders game every year because the energy of the crowd and the fact their would ALWAYS be some idiotic Raiders fan starting a fight made it the best game. I am in favor of Al Davis passing on…control of the team to someone who actually could turn them into a real franchise again.

Save...
…the last half of a woefully underachieving decade for the very talented Chargers, and they have been the most insignificant AFC West team since the early, early years of the AFL. Yeah, the Dan Fouts era produced some high powered offensive teams, but the Chargers have always been dogged by an institutional lack of character and heart. Despise them as I might— and I do— they don’t deserve to be anybody’s biggest rival. They’ve spent many many more seasons being the ‘two given wins’ on the schedule than KC or Oakland ever will— though the modern Raiders are giving them a run for their hapless money.
I guess you’d have to remember back to the days that the Raiders mocked, taunted and completely disrespected the Broncos to understand that if the Raiders never beat the Broncos again, it still wouldn’t be enough. The Raiders are far and away the Broncos biggest rival, IMO.

I voted Chargers
because I’m looking at last few years and:
they’ve been the team that Denver has had the most important games with;
they’ve been the only other team in the AFC West that hasn’t stunk (sorry Arrowhead guest);
their fans are amazingly cocky about the rivalry, given their team has never won a super bowl, has a history of playoff failure, and really hasn’t done much of anything else.
It’s just been a long while since the Raiders have been competitive and until the Crypt Keeper is sent away I can’t see voting for them here.

Meh,
I can’t really argue there. KC is in limbo right now, but given the last 20 years, the Chiefs organization has given us fans enough good times to let me patiently sit through a few bad years in the belief that we’ll get back to being respected again. It’s going to take some time for our new managemant to repair this simking ship at Arrowhead, and given what Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards left for us…. well patience is a virtue.
Can’t wait for the whole AFC west to be competitive again though. OAK vs DEN vs KC vs SD can be a great thing….

Just takes awhile when you hit reboot. I wish some of my fellow Broncos fans were half as patient as you though. Mostly winning or 500 seasons as far as I can remember but fans want blood after a few losses. ;-) Chiefs more likely to come back than Raiders at this point, given how dysfunctional Oak is with Al Davis still in “charge.” (Using that term loosely.)

OAK is bad.
Being a KC fan, I actually watched the entire game last Sunday of KC @ OAK. It was quite possibly one of the worst game I’ve ever watched. Bad players, bad coaching, bad officiating… it was just bad. Oakland did everything in their power ranging from penalizing themselves to letting JaMarcus Russel masquerade as an NFL QB in an attempt to hand us the game. And they did.
The Monday after the game I was talking with some co workers and brought up the topic: “How bad would it be to be a die hard Raider fan?”. Six years of total ineptness would challenge my saintly level of patience. I just don’t know how they can do it. 5 years of top ten draft picks. And they’re still bottom feeders. It’s sad to say, because Al Davis is such a colorful NFL character (even though I despise him and every thing he stands for), but until he dies, OAK is thoroughly screwed. With no lube. And even after he’s gone, there are no guarantees. They’re not a very prophitable franchise, and his son Mike seems disinterested in taking over. It’ll be interesting.
I couldn’t imagine KC being that bad for that long. It would be trying. Luckily our franchise stayed in good hands through Lamar Hunt’s passing, with his son taking over. We got the NFL executive of the decade in GM Scott Pioli. The Chiefs will be back. I can’t say the same for the Raiders.

For me
It’s the Colts, because I lived in Indiana from ‘02-’06, and suffering those two huge playoff losses while surrounded by Peyton Manning fanboys really seared the hate into my braid. This will probably wear off as I haven’t lived there for 3 years, but I still have a lot of friends who are Colts fans…so it may take a while.
I know it’s not one of the options, but that would be my vote.

Same here.
Colts are up there on KC’s shit list. Mad respect for Peyton as a player and person, but I can’t wait for the day to give them big payback in the play offs…. whenever that may be.

I voted Chargers
because that is the team that is standing in our way of getting back to where we want to be. It was the Raiders, however for it to be a rivalry both teams need to be competitive and both the Raiders and the Chiefs haven’t been competitive in the AFC West for some time.
Every team in the division has held that distinction at one point or another. Right now it is SD without a doubt.

To me it's the Raiders
Always has been and always will be IMO.
To put it in context, I’ve been a fan since ~95.
Chargers are annoying.
Chiefs are respected.
Raiders are hated.
That’s how I see them.

At the present it has to be the dolts.
We can’t have a rivalry with bad teams (raidas and chefs), where’s the spirit in that? Now when the tide changes and they start being actual competition then we’ll take another look, but right now, it’s the dolts.

No doubt, it's the Raiders for me...
my definition of a sucessful season is 2 wins against Oakland; anything else is gravy.
I get that it’s the Chargers we’ll be in a race against to see who wins the division, but where’s the fun in cheering against whoever happens to be the second best team in the AFC West. Pick somebody to hate, and live it!!
Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.
Look out Dodgers...Purple objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

OVERALL
It’s the Raider’s – they have beaten Us more times than We’ve beaten them.
We own the Chargers overall, and I honestly don’t recall offhand what Our overall record is against the Chiefs, but if I remember (vaguely) correctly, they’re in between the Us vs. Chargers overall, and Us vs. Raiders overall. I could be wrong, in that the Chiefs have beaten Us more than we’ve beaten them, and that they’ve beaten Us more times than the Raiders have…. I’ll have to check it out when I get home.
But it always has been, and to me, always will be the Raiders (KC would be second, SD third because they’re worthless except for this decade).
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and someone else oughtta have a 'fair' shot : )

Re: Overall
We haven’t exactly “owned” the Chargers. We’re 54-44-1 against them.
Raiders lead: 55-41-2
Chiefs lead: 53-44
From here.
Between the regular season & playoff history, Shanahan’s link between the two teams, and Al Davis’s antics, I’d say the biggest rivalry is with the Raiders. Even with Oakland at the bottom of the league over the last few years, the games against them are generally the most intense on Denver’s schedule each year. The Chargers weren’t relevant to Denver prior to 2004.
Fun fact: prior to 2004, the last SD playoff appearance was 1995 (from here). For the most part, they’re an upstart team. I can’t call that a legitimate rival. Not yet, anyway.

That's awesome, thanks for the link!
I was going from a printout I have from DB.com from this off-season, and it has (prior to season start)
Raiders lead: 54 – 39
Chiefs lead: 53 – 44
We lead Chargers 52 – 43
But that’s contradictory also, because currently DB.com has a “Top Story” up that claims this is Denver and SD’s 100th meeting, and that neither Oakland or KC has played Us a hundred times yet…. So, the point I’m making I suppose, is that the stats you have linked seem more accurate than DB.com’s prior to the season start that I was recalling, I am looking at the printout, so additionally, the point would be that they are incomplete records, LoL….
So if the stats you have linked there include this season (which they seem to) next year will hold Our hundredth games against both the Chiefs and the Raiders.
Good stuff – And Thank You, again, for the links. ( =

its gotta be the chargers
It’s been a while since oakland or KC has put up a fight… kind of like UT-A&M vs UT-OU. A&m sucks now so..we dont’ really consider it that big a rivalry anymore. no one cares to go to the game cause we pretty much expect to beat em. OU on the other hand, has brought a good team every year for the past decade and its always been a hard-fought closely contested game.
the same with the raiders and chiefs. unless they drastically change the way they’re drafting, picking players up in free agency, etc. they are not going to challenge us for anything

The raiders
But IMO its always been a 3 way rivalry to me, KC/oak/Den. Sd is and always be an afterthought to me. Right SD is annoying like a knat. They dont have a history of sustaining consistent winning. This is their longest sustained winning seasons (.500 teams dont count) Since the 60’s. The majority of the SD fans I come across are ill informed of their past and think the Chargers began in 2004. (kind of like the majority of Pats fans began in 2001) Granted there are some well spoken highly knowledgeable Bolt fans out there, its just I dont run across them too awful much. But I do understand most fans here thinking its SD, and right now it is based on that Since 04 SD has won the west all but one year while Denver has finished 2nd except 05.

It's the chargers
I hate the bloody chargers. I hate everything about that franchise. their bandwagon fans, their complete garbage ownership (I know from personal experience) and their completely disgusting history. Oh, and I hate Dan Fouts, Phillip Rivers, Shawne “epileptic” Merriman and the rest of their bottom feeding lowlife players.
I know it’s probably childish, but I have an undying hatred for anything baby blue and piss yellow.

2-14
The Broncos could go 2-14 in a season. And yeah it would suck, but if those two wins came against the Raiders, that would still be a great season.

The AFL/post-merger Raiders put a scar in Old School Broncos Fans hearts that simply won’t heal. They went out of their way to degrade the hapless Broncos.

Raiders, but only...
after Rivers is retired. Usually no one is bigger than the team but when you are a tool of that magnitude you deserve to be hated above all others.

Chargers
and I don’t like it one bit.
Oakland carried that mantle for years, but a rival is someone you are forced to take seriously, and the Raiders have finally lived down to the disrespect I always had for them.
Don’t get me wrong. Beating the Raiders is always satisfying, but for them to reclaim that place as our biggest rival, they have to become competitive again. I long for the days when the Bolts were bottomfeeders and the Raiders were our biggest challengers — taking them on really felt like good vs. evil.
I hope they do, because taking on the Bolts always seems a little joyless, imho, whether it’s a crushing defeat that leaves a lingering odor of @$$ in the air, or a victory that, for some reason just never seems satisfying enough.
Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

When Shanahan left, the raiders rivalry lost momentum
They were once the great rivalry, but they really are just awful now. I’ve thought at times that the day they beat the Broncos in Mile Hi, 2008, was really the day Mike lost his job. Right now, it’s the Bolts – they’re worthy of a rivalry. Any team can beat you on any given day, sure, but at this point, losing to OAK is more embarrassing than hurtful. SD is good enough to be a good game and they are going to be hard to beat.

The Dotlz
For the same reason that the Seahawks were never a rival when they were in our division and when you kick a puppy it is not a big rival. There must be a contest to be a rivalry.

I'd say the San Diego Chargers,
To clarify, I would say the Chargers as long as we are talking about the present. They are the Bronco’s biggest rival for the AFC West Division. This positions them as a greater rival, at present, than the Raiders or the Chiefs, because neither of those two teams are contending for the Division with the Broncos. Additionally, in the past couple of years, the Broncos and Chargers have sparked a rivalry through heated and meaningful games played between the two teams, including the last game of the 2008-2009 season, as well as the game coming up this Sunday. The Chargers are the biggest rival for the Broncos because they are the biggest competition, and rivals are made through meaningful competition, not through hatred. I believe competition defines rivals, and hatred defines enemies. But, that is another debate.
